RATING - NEUTRALSince you can only rate products as recommending them or not, I have decided to opt for not recommending this game, however my feeling for the game are fairly neutral and I will outline this in my review.
Jazzpunk is a game I received from a friend some time ago now, it is a game I really wanted to play and experience, upon viewing some footage of it, I write a review now after some time has passed, because I feel it is important to wait a good amount of time after playing / completing a game, to assess whether it's a game that you can find within your heart to always return to, something that is rare in many modern titles.
Jazzpunk is not one of those games, if you see how many hours I have on the game it is 3.2 hours, and this is more or less how long it will take you to complete the game 100% and unlock all achievements, this is a very short game, something I've been keen to avoid as of recently, you will be able to complete this game in roughly 2 hours while still experiencing everything the game has to offer, and the game levels do pack in a ton of things to see and I dedicated the time within each level to exploring every single area, every single pixel to get the most out of the game. Perhaps if I didn't spend so much time the first play through doing this, I may have considered revisiting the games areas to find new things, but even if that were the case, you're still not going to get more than a few hours worth of entertainment from this game.
This is the main reason why I cannot recommend this game and my reasons are bias, I grew up with the majority of online games being the free flash based games, in which just as much effort was put into making games that could keep you entertained for a few hours, and have huge replayability, and these were uploaded for free to many free flash gaming hubs, for people to enjoy. I feel as if this way of experiencing games online is shifting, as many indie developers make these kinds of games and sell them for $10 or more rather than making them available to everyone. This game in some respects is an exception, it is extremely well made and thought out, and I would definitely pay money to play a game such as this, but is it worth the full retail price of £11? No, definitely not (although that might be a subjective viewpoint). This is one of those games that you really have to get on a sale when it's down to £4 or something that reflects it's price better. What I expect from a game that costs more than £10 is something that will keep me entertained for roughly 20 hours +, something which a lot of indie games fail to provide unfotunately.
If a lot more time has been put into expanding this game into many more levels, to bring it up to the quality we expect from a good video game, and what those who grew up with gaming have come to expect, then certainly this game could be huge, instead it simply leaves memories in my mind for a few weeks and then it sits gathering dust in my steam library as i fail to ever find a reason to replay it again. For all these reasons I cannot recommend it at it's current price.
I will however go on to say that this is definately a game you should play at some point, if you can pick it up for cheap, for it is a really entertaining and quirky game which rewards you exploring and trying things you wouldn't normally do in video games, if you're a fan of exploring games and trying to unlock everything and see everything, this game is packed full of all those kinds of easter eggs, mini-games and many cultural references that will keep you entertained and hold your attention for a whole playthrough, it is a game that is not very hard at all either, and is all round a fun experience playing it. Some may find some of it's humour a little too over the top, but I feel that there's something in this game that everyone can enjoy.
There is not much to say beyond that, the game levels are very interesting and vibrant, the crazy story adds some sense of progression to exploring the mad levels, as well as the achievements which convince you to fully explore and enjoy the game, all round it is a great game and I just wish it could have been longer, adding atleast 8 hours worth of gameplay, rather than the 2-3 hours that it provides.
Will I play it again? I highly doubt it, maybe in the distant future.
Did I enjoy it? Very much so.
Would I recommend it? Not at it's current price, but get it on sale and you won't regret it.
