This game was designed to be unfair and impossible in some occations until you throw your corpse at them over and over. At lest you only pay like $8 for this game unlike the normal arcarde where to actually beat the game you would need your life savings in quarters. Still fun and brings back memories of only being able to beat the first level!

The classic arcade shoot-em-up.

Keep note that this version is a port of the iOS version, so while it's not exactly a perfect arcade port, it still plays and handles rather well. There are some slight sound anomolys with the emulation, but quite frankly it's as close as you're gonna get with the true METAL SLUG experience on Steam.

As for the game itself, 3 is known to be the best (and the hardest) of the series. And after 14 years, this still holds true. Saying that, once you learn the patterns of the enemies and bosses, and know the best routes to take and where the weapons and vehicles drop, you'll be mastering the game soon enough.

Online play seems to be pretty solid, provided you and your partner have good connections to each other.

Overall, I would say; Yes, buy this game if you're a fan of the series. If you're looking for a better emulation version, though, see if you can pick up the Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2 or Wii, which has the games 1-6 and is a really stable port.

This version is still perfectly playable despite the slight emulation annoyances.

This game reminds me of my youth in the arcades. It's a classic that anyone who played the 'Metal Slug' games in the past should have. A good port en recently (November 2014) got an update with trading cards, infinite continues and some other improvements.
Graphics and sound effects are retro but can be put in 1920*1080 resolution. Released in 2000 and still a fun game to play. Works perfect with an Xbox 360 controller.
A classic with some improvements for today's gaming. Can be very difficult and sometimes frustrating. This was the point in the arcades - the more you die the more coins you had to put in the machine.
Prepare to die a lot!

Genre - 2D Side Scrolling Action Shooter (Comedy Sci-Fi/Horror)
I have played Metal SLug game intermittently over the years on differnt formats, sometimes co-op and sometimes single. THis game stays true to form and has the comedy and action in equal measures. You can play through at your own place and there is much fun to be had. You pick up different weapons and can use vehicles throughout. Bad guys range from scared soldiers to giant aliens. The game will have you coming back for more especially if you drag a friend along for the ride.

While this port has some issues and is pretty much emulation, this version of Metal Slug 3 is a good one to mess around with, and it gets all better with the included multiplayer. If you're a fan of the Metal Slug series, this is for you!

One of the best titles that NEOGEO had in its age, quite nostalgic. This port features online multiplaying, achievements and even trading cards. If you like(not so)retro games, go for this one.

Experts on the history of consoles and old hands will surely remember even with tears of joy in the eyes of the magnificent games of the 'Metal Slug' series. Exciting non-stop action, a lovingly detailed graphics and a brilliant multiplayer mode ensured a triumphant success in the arcades and on the impossibly expensive Neo Geo. But offers 'Metal Slug 3' really more than turbid feelings of nostalgia?

Hardly any action series burns such a dazzling display of wacky ideas like 'Metal Slug'. At the beginning you choose one of four protagonists, which however only look different. The heroes are all identical in play-style. Then it goes on in the fight and you beat you through five different levels, which are packed with enemies and insane ideas. Yes, five sections. That doesn't sound straight overly much and experienced players will need despite the crisp degree of difficulty only a few hours to get the end credits to face.

But it's simply due to the already mentioned change that you will be entertained at this time. Actually, you get barely a second to even take a breath, because something is always happening on the screen: explosions, respawning enemies and hissing through the air projectiles and grenades always keep you in suspense. The type of adversary is just as crazy as versatile: from coated shown pseudo Nazi soldiers to creepy undead to fancy aliens. Even the most hackneyed cliché is actually represented - and all without negative connotation.

A real innovation prize win btw. the famously staged final boss's. Equally varied are the landscapes. So you travel through arid deserts or dive into the sea. The arsenal is a lot here to defend themselves against the baddies: grenades, shotguns and even a flamethrower is available. The shootas are presented of previously released prisoners, expressing their gratitude in this way. So that your feet are not mistreated so badly, you are allowed to take place sometimes on an airplane or on the back of a camel missiles. Crazy, isn't it? But also incredibly funny.

On request you shall also try walking on a coop-shooting tour, which makes so much fun. Alone you realize all too quickly that this game is only a simple side scrolling shooter - although a terrific staged.

An incredibly fun Run ´N Gun game in both single player and Co-op. If you haven’t played this before expect to die every three seconds but the chaos on screen and barrage of death is actually part of the fun!

If you are wondering whether to get Metal Slug 3 or Metal Slug X my advice would be to wait until they are on sale and get both! They are both very good games and it really just depends on what mood you’re in and how much time you have as to which game to pick.

Metal Slug 3 is a longer game overall and a slightly more difficult one too. It has a little more variation in the type of enemies that attack you, at least from level to level and there are branching pathways to explore. There is more variety with some flying and underwater levels and a greater amount of craft and animals to get in/on to mix things up. This along with more actual levels to fight through at the end stages bulks the game out more.

Metal Slug X is a more streamlined game that takes less time to complete and is a little easier overall. It has a more linear level design and more opportunity to pilot the Metal Slug tank itself. This perhaps gives it a bit more of an early arcade experience and possibly provides a little more flow to the feel of the gameplay. This is also good if you’re looking to squeeze some side scrolling Shoot ´Em Up action into a busy day or don’t feel like spending a great deal of time playing.

Both games have enough differences (as well as positive similarities) in level design and feel/vibe to warrant buying/playing them both if you like this genre of game and it really is more down to what frame of mind you’re in to which particular one you feel like playing. They are such enjoyable, well designed games to play it’s hard to say which is better. I do suggest you get both but I guess if I had a Heavy Machine Gun pressed to my head and I had to choose only one then Metal Slug 3 might come out on top by a (POW´s) whisker but I would miss playing X too.

I probably spent several hundred dollars playing this in the arcade. This is arguably the best side scroller ever made.

For $8 it's a hot deal. On sale it's on fire.

If you like platformers and side scrollers this is well worth it.

For the original experience make sure to play it with the settings "No Video Filter" & "No Scan Lines".

Playing it with a friend makes the game even more fun, so the fact that this version offers online co-op makes it the best version you can buy.

Get it on sale, its not worth the full $8, I played Metal Slug alot as a kid, so if you did also, its fun to go back to the old levels and bosses you remember raging at as a kid.

(Spend 20 Cents more / 2 dollars more, depending on if you get it onsale or not, and get Garrys mod. 600 Hours on that, compared the the amount of time I have played. I just beat the story with my friend, so compare that to 600 hours of fun.)

Being, well, an arcade game, Metal Slug 3 is brutally hard and will totally wreck your ♥♥♥♥. But for that awesome unique pixel-art and animation and that amazing rise in scale as the game goes on plus all the fun times with co-op buds, and with the recent addition of freeplay so you don't need to worry about being awful at life, it's so, so worth it.
