Early Access Update 7!

24 iunie 2014

This update includes work on the first three stages of World 5 including a new-from-scratch version of the level Control, new enemies and the first of our additional game modes, Boss Rush!

Features
  • New enemy variant - Bullet Reaper
  • New enemy variant - Melee Bomber
  • New game mode - Boss Rush - currently includes Embryo, Vespula and Justice, it is selectable from the main menu
  • New whitebox level Control (world 5 - 2) (replaces the previous 'Control' whitebox level)
  • Assembly and Relay have had their order switched
  • Rebalanced Centrifuge and Convection - as a result, their leaderboards have been reset
  • Added new geometry to Filament

Fixes
  • support for Leaderboards in 64bit Linux
  • Vespula and Justice correctly split their score in multiplayer
  • Shiitake's Propeller Mines interact with multiple moving walkways
  • Justice's head is aligned with his hands when he rips it off to throw at you

Known Issues
  • Highest graphic setting no longer uses SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion) we have had an issue with it and have needed to disable it while we investigate
  • When starting the game with "-popupwindow" in order to play in full screen windowed mode (in Windows) you will not be able to set the game to fullscreen mode, but the options menu does not reflect this
  • Native Dual Shock 3 support in OSX is busted. It is possible to work around it using a control remapper that makes the DS3 to emulate an xbox pad or similar, and we are working on a proper fix
  • Shadows are missing on certain integrated videocards under Linux
  • Native Steam Controller support still coming soon

Early Access Roadmap

Assault Android Cactus already has a very solid foundation, but there is a lot of content left to go in to the game before it can be considered finished. We want to get real player feedback as early as possible so that we can make the best decisions about new levels, modes, and characters that will appear in the final game.

Here's a quick look at what's already in the game and where we are heading with the final version:

Current Build Includes
  • 13 Finished levels (including Embryo & Vespula Bosses)
  • 8 Whitebox levels (Functional gameplay, missing visuals)
  • 6 Playable characters (including two unlockable characters!)
  • 1-4 Player local co-op
  • Online Leaderboards and competitive score and rank system for all the levels

Development Roadmap
  • Full Featured Campaign - A full 25 level Campaign mode along with intro & outro story scenes.
  • Unlockable Characters - Help us design and test the crazy/unique weapon sets for our extra playable characters.
  • Rewards System & Bonus Content - Earn rewards points for clearing levels and unlock codex info, concept art, and EX Options like Retro Camera mode that completely change the game.
  • Steamworks Integration - steamworks support for cloud saves and trading cards.
  • New Enemy Types - We're getting close now but there are still new enemy types coming to round out the Zone 5 end game experience.
  • Additional Game Modes - Endless Mode will give you an infinite high score challenge akin to arcade classics while Boss Rush lets you take on the giant robots one after another in a single level.
  • Custom Controls - Complete remapping for control pads & Keyboard/Mouse configurations.

You can help us make these features great by reporting bugs and giving us lots of feedback, so please post your experience and thoughts on the forums.

Although, at the time of writing this, the game still is in Early Access, I've already had a blast with it.
Fast paced, hectic arena shooter gameplay. A diverse selection of characters to choose from all with a different playstyle.

Large variety of levels and hard bosses that all offer dynamic gameplay.
The replayability of this game is perfect.

Pretty nice music, gorgeous graphics oozing character and color.
A recommended game, if you just want to shoot stuff.

A fun, fast paced, twin stick shoot-em-up with a charming style and some interesting mechanics. The game encourages aggressive play and throws a lot of chaos at you, but the difficulty curve feels comfortable. The different characters offer a lot of variety and replayability, the levels can be very dynamic, and the combat is nuanced. It doesn't require the same precision as a traditional bullet hell, but getting perfect combos with different characters on all the levels is an immense challenge. The developers are very active within the community and strive to deliver a good product. Recommended!

Right. So. The title. It makes about as much sense as the game does. But hell, whatever. There's been more crazy names thrown around in the Steam universe. Let's roll with it. What are we looking at?

Assault Android Cactus, and from this point on I shall merely refer to it as Cactus, is an arena score shooter. Where you pick from a stable of androids, each with their own weapon loadouts and personalities and looks, and then select a level from an ever expanding list and have at it, dealing with wave upon wave of horribleness in the time honoured tradition of Arena Shooters everywhere. With obscene firepower.

On my rig, it runs beautifully, after the first run on a level which for some strange reason it needs a bit of time to shake out the cobwebs it will invariably run at 1920x1080 with all the shiny set to max, and with nary a judder. The movement is slick and the animation is crisp. The effects are bright and the game moves along at a rapid clip, controls are ridiculously simple, you have four keys for movement, you use your mouse to aim, one button to fire, the other to switch between primary and "power" weapons.

And that's it. Kill everything that isn't you.

Thank god, because this is all about instinct, you pretty much are on the move from start to finish, dodging bullets and badguys in a near incessant firestorm of incomming pain and rage in the form of various mechanical and I -think- biomechanical baddies, I didn't get time to admire the scenery too much. Kinda hard when everything is trying to kill you.

The graphics are excellent and the story, what there is at this point is witty and well presented, in the style of some sort of adult teen anime, there seems to have been some kind of robot mutiny, and the androids you control are tasked with restoring order. Each of the androids has a very specific personality, which shows through quite nicely in the boss fights, their expressions and their playstyles. Music and sound effects are also uniformly excellent, with each "area" having a thumping soundtrack that keeps a high tempo and keeps you pretty much immersed in what's going on.

And this is an early alpha.

This review will evolve but bluntly - short of the developers being visited by aliens and having their brains replaced with cottage cheese and pineapple chunks - this should be an easy recommendation, and a big thumbs up from me.

Ok, it's official this game is awesome. The gameplay is a little more forgiving than it looks and while projectiles spray in every direction and will take away energy, these events are very well balanced with the use of the knock-down/power-down incident that occurs when you take too many hits back to back. This will allow the player flexibility and the ability to momentarily cross over into gun fire and enemy packs to pick up energy and powerups, in the process taking out a few more trigger happy enemies!

Replayability is awesome. The game's quality is beyond Early Access level. If I'd have bought this game as a retail title I wouldn't have found it to be "beta-ish", there's really very little of this game that looks like a "work in progress" - rather is is fully playable and fun right off the bat. An exemplary "Early Access" project!
