About This Game

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.

The three main goals for our game are simple:

1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.

2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!

3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

''..joy comes from amassing items, gaining experience and watching your character evolve into a godly killing machine.'' - Joystiq

''This game is immaculate. The enemy design, the sound effects, the powers, the fights, all of it feels wonderful.'' - Eurogamer

"..a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I've experienced in such games" - RockPaperShotgun

I love this game so much I decided to do my first review about it.

While there are many games out there that are difficult for the sake of being difficult, few of them find the balance of also being fun at the same time. I've white-knuckled my way through many many sessions on this game, but I've never rage-quit on behalf of the insanity that eventually brought my demise. Instead, Risk of Rain achieves that "just one more time" feeling and I've been coming back to it for years.

In the vein of some other modern roguelikes, this game maintains the "one and done" approach, but there are items and unlockables that carry over to your next playthrough. Items are gathered throughout the game and (at least initially) are randomly generated. This puts the emphasis on plowing forward instead of staring at menus and preparing your loadout. Some may not like the lack of control this gives them, but as someone who spends way too much time in other RPGs trying to find that "perfect" build only to get crushed in the next dungeon, it is refreshing to just let the chips fall and roll with what the lords of RNG provide.

The action is non-stop and the difficulty ramp-up is steep, although once you get rolling 40 minutes can pass by in a fever-dream like state of flow. The graphics are "pixel-art", yes, but unlike the trendy "indie scene" games that explicitly and shamelessly rip-off a style from a 8 or 16-bit game, Risk of Rain has its own unique aesthetic that heightens the atmosphere of the dank and dire storyline.

About the story, the game allows the narritave to develop through devices tied to gameplay instead of bashing you over the head with dialog or exposition. For example, every item you unlock has a corresponding journal entry, and instead of just saying "this increases the jump height" it is written out as the main character would describe it in a research report. There are also "monster logs" that you can collect that share this style of curious observation about the things encountered in the alien worlds. This lets the story unravel in sync with the gameplay and provides a compelling reason to progress and solve the mysteries laid out before you.

In a time where "roguelike", "pixel-art", and "indie" have become tired buzzwords, Risk of Rain awakens the sense of excitement and wonder that these types of games should evoke.

Awesome with friends
Awesome alone
Awesome on keyboard
Awesome with controller

This game will suck your time out and make your fingers hurt from smashing that attack button because obviously you hit harder when you press harder. And don't question the story this game tells in the background if sanity and peace of mind is what you like. Really, don't go deep into it. You'll never think of those poor Lemurians the same way you did before.

I've played this game for about 5 hours. It's hard. Like, really hard. You're probably going to rage a lot and cry (hence the name). But still, I'd say it's well worth the price.

I hate this game. Easy mode is fine. Any difficulty above that and it's a mess of enemies with way too much power spawning every second. It's fun at first, but eventually it's a dull mindless game of standing there shooting overpowered enemies waiting for them to die. Sometimes you even have to keep running just to not get hit by the broken attacks, but the enemies will just kill you anyway because thats apparently what difficulty is. The game's not difficult, it's unfair. Another problem is the maps. They're really pretty i'll admit, but when youre trying to collect the artifacts that spawn on only one of the 2 variants of each map, its a pain in the ♥♥♥. One of the artifacts is in the second to last level, so it's kind of hard to get to it, but sometimes its not there and you have to keep slogging through the boring masses of broken enemies to get back, only to get killed as youre about to get it because the enemies spawn constantly and have too much health and power. I lost my mind when both of those two outcomes happened over and over. This game is all RNG based and needs balancing. The best part is the characters you can be.

Conclusion: You'll get 3 hours of fun out of this game, which 1. Isnt enough compared to most games that cost the same amount and 2. Is 1 hour away from being refundable. Dont waste your money.

Explore alien planets looking for a teleporter while enemies randomly spawn. The catch? Every second is precious; the game gets more difficult with each passing second. If you die, the game will be sure to mock you.
Risk of Rain is a charming and well polished game.
The soundtrack is perhaps my favorite part of the game; ominous and yet brimming with energy. Truly gorgeous and completely unexpected!
The Lore isn't quite as fleshed out as I'd like, but that could be because I haven't collected a great deal of monster logs.
As for gameplay, Risk of Rain is wonderful. Players have a selection of characters that are suiting for different styles of gameplay. For example, some are more focused on mobility, while others on attack. This isn't a groundbreaking concept, but when it comes to multiplayer, things can get quite interesting.
Which brings me to multiplayer, Risk of Rain is best played with friends. Truly! Nothing is more satisfying than laughing at a fallen companion... Only to realize the trouble you are in as enemies swarm.
With that being said, Risk of Rain is worth the money if you and your friends are up for play sessions.

Risk of Rain, a great rogue-like filled with action packed fun that gets harder as time progresses. Each level has different kinds of mob spawns depending on the region/map type. Difficult , but not impossible, to beat solo. Great co-op play. The artifact system brings you back and alters each playthough heavily.

Pros:
-Runs on potatoes (lower fps on co-op due to explosions/extra rendering)
-Great soundtrack
-Great controlls
-Large character selection and unlocking new characters
-Replayability is good, but semi repetative if you're bad at unlocking characters.
Cons:
-More expensive than your mom
-Difficult to stay alive as certain classes (Git Gud)
-Co-Op doesn't have servers to connect to, making finding a co-op partner slightly harder.

Graphics/Artwork: 9/10
Sound/Audio: 9.5/10
Controlls/Mechanics: 8/10
Replayability: 7.5/10
Overall: 9/10

This game is amazing. It one of if not my favorite game on steam. The gameplay is lots of fun you get to unlock different characters, items and artifacts. The game has excellent music and a different style of pixly grapics. Althogh controls can be a bit hard to use, I would recomend using a steam controller or similar. I will admit I did buy the game on sale for $2.99.

Pro's
-Music
-Ghrapics
-Statistics(more than most games)
-Lots of different characters
-Local Co-Op(online doesn't work)

Con's
-Lag(usually only when you have a lot of ennimes and your attack trigers severel effects.)
-Unusally addicting
-Loss of sleep

$ Value: $10.51
Replay value: 9/10
Overall: 11/10 ~ worth every cent.

I can't believe I only discovered this game a few years down the line... Convinced my brother to get it with me and we're having a blast playing it! Each character is different, game is actually quite challenging, and there are global variable changes to keep things even more intersting/harder once you get really good at the game.

For co-op, I can't recommend this game more.
For solo, it's a lot of fun too but it really shines co-op.

A fun and challenging 2D sidescrolling rogue-like in which you can get a demi-god adrenaline rush by stuffing many powerful artifacts down your space trousers and making hundreds of dudes face the wrath of your explosive fury. Start as one dude, unlock many other dudes with varying abilities by doing certain things, like beating the game, etc.

The difficulty of the game slowly increases as time goes on, so you and probably at least one other friend should split up, and balance between murdering space dudes, getting their exp, gold, items, collecting items from chests by spending money you've collected (because videogame), and finding the teleporter in a timely manner which initiates a gauntlet for about 90 seconds and spawns a boss which you must then destroy. After the gauntlet is over and the remaining enemies are dead, any player can use the teleporter to proceed to the next level.

Rinse and repeat several times until you get to the final level, and kill the final boss who wants you and your comrades incredibly dead.

In short:

> Explore, shoot things, collect items, find teleporter
> Hold out, shoot more things, enter teleporter
> Repeat, reach final level, beat snot out of final dude, probably unlock more dudes
> Repeat
> Go mad with POWER!!!!!!!

Risk of Rain, Challanging, fun, exciting and... BECOME GODLIKE (if you can that is.) Really good if you want to kill some time and want a challange. With every mins past, the game gets harder and harder, collect item to survive the harsh planet and maybe.. Just maybe with all that looting and item stacking, you can BECOME GODLIKE!

250+ Hours into this bad boy.
Thrash, bash, smash, hack, and slash through hordes of monsters all the while unlocking artifacts that can drasticly change the game (and usually not to your advantage).

This game will keep you moving, testing your reflexes, and you ability to observe the battlefield - soon to be bloodbath.

Risk of Rain is punishing; brutal, and at times, just plain cruel. When a game mode is annotated with "you will die" - its not a warning, Is a fact.

Elite mobs that can electricute, burn, and even explode.

I can say I have beaten the game on monsoon difficulty, with every artifact active. And now you know why I have 250 hours logged :-)

11/10 would get electro-flame-sploded again.

There are a few bugs here and there. Today I got stuck INSIDE a wall on the map "Sunken Tomb" with the Huntress after sinking to the bottom of the map. I got teleported inside the walls and couldn't escape (blinking didn't work as you cannot blink trough walls) so I had to cancel my run :( Some other run earlier one entire map was just NO CLIP. I kept falling trough the map. This was stage 1 starting a fresh run. bugs like these are annoying. Minor bugs like floating chests are uncommon. This happend May 2016. Overall still a very VERY nice game!

It's like you took Just Cause and some Platforming and sidescroller shooter games and mixed into a game...
Great to Play alone or with friends.
-Each Character has their own unique fighting style
-Plenty of Achivments and tasks to do
-Do the tasks and be rewarded with new items, item descriptions and characters!
-So many items to choose from
-Special artifacts that can alter the game in the menu once found in the actual levels
-With so many items the item combos can be so crazy its like your breaking the game
-Replayability not just in general but in a run you can choose to redo the other levels you went through instead of going to the final level for more items or look for the artifacts or grind! ;3

The only complaint i really have about this game is that you need to set up your own server in order to play with friends and such like with Hamachi or something. But when you do its a blast to have.
My Rating
9.9/10 Master Piece.

Risk of Rain is the first rogue like game that I have played, and its been the most fun and angering experience at the same time. The randomly spawned areas and loot makes for a unique experience every game you play. The classes provide a great variety that caters to every style of play. Overall this game was fun to play and will always be fun to come back to and play again and again.

Fun little roguelike that's rather difficult when you first start, but once you get used to how everything handles, you'll enjoy it quite a bit. Controller is highly recommended for this game, as keyboard controls are rather difficult to use.
