About This Game

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.

The three main goals for our game are simple:

1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.

2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!

3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

''..joy comes from amassing items, gaining experience and watching your character evolve into a godly killing machine.'' - Joystiq

''This game is immaculate. The enemy design, the sound effects, the powers, the fights, all of it feels wonderful.'' - Eurogamer

"..a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I've experienced in such games" - RockPaperShotgun

This game is fantastic. The feeling of power you get as you progress is incredible, and the fact that the game can maintain balance despite the complexity and sheer volume of items and monsters... it's pretty good.

They just killed Cash. Now, they want to kill him again. America is full of run down, broken rust-belt towns where nobody cares and anything goes. In Carcer City, nothing matters anymore and all that's left are cheap thrills. The ultimate rush is the power to grant life and take it away, for sport.

Hardcore or not?

Risk of Rain is a survival game, with procedurally generated contents, no game is like the game before. The difficulty of the game is harder than it might appear at first - but not as hard as to call it really hardcore.

It excells in many things, like being a good game for breaks or trying to achieve some set aim... and then just some more... And it's fun, fun, fun, even though it feels like you die a thousand times... which you actually will...

Especially nasty is the mechanic that makes the game harder, the more time passes by - so loitering around on the lowest level will doubtlessy get you killed anyway. There is a lot to unlock, a lot to explore and you need to survive the ordeal that is set by the procedures.

Good news, artifacts may help to get you around, and another good news, they might stack.

The sound is rather well made, the graphics are for the game good, and actually this game is more fun than some tripple A games, because of the very straightforwardness of the gameplay... run around, shooting everything that tries to move, and shoot some more to gain the next level... go to the boss, hit em hard... and make it to the next stage. Bug off with fancy graphics, a game that runs well is more important in that matter.

And that is what you get with this game, it runs well, just till you quit it... then you get an ugly pop up... because something was not so well programmed - luckily it's after you played the game. Thus, nothing to fret about.

I Recommend this Game

Because:

  • Hard, but fun, fun, fun.
  • Fitting soundtrack.
  • Easy to learn, yet very hard to master.
  • A lot of unlockables.
  • Fast paced action, or tactical action.

Don't forget, this isn't Mission Impossible, staying a while too long probably could spell... stay forever...

Let me start this review by saying I love this game. But it isn't without its faults either.

Since I'm not good at writing reviews I'll go with the classic "pros/cons" format and follow it up with suggestions how to improve on negative points. Also there are some points which can be considered pros and cons at the same time, depending on how you play games.

Pros:

-Price (even at 10 bucks its worth it, at a sale even more so)
-Replayability (potentially infinite levels to go through)
-Challenging, the intensity slowly ramps up and you gives you just enough time to gather enough power ups
-Beautiful
-Almost no power up feels useless and they're all useful in their own regards
-Character diversity
-End Boss battle is actually pretty hard if you do it before getting too powerful
-Unlocking stuff can be hard to achieve but is very rewarding although some secrets like the Miner can be hard to find
-Rounds can go on for as long as you like

Cons:

-I guess it's hard to play multiplayer since you need something like Hamachi for it and it can be a pain for some people to set that up
-You can actually become too powerful. If you play long enough you can't be killed at a certain point anymore because of the lifesteal/hp/armor power up and the fact that they stack.
-Some characters feel useless and by that I mean you find yourself thinking:"Why would I play this one when I can play the Archer"
-If your friend dies in co-op the xp and item loss is ridiculous for them to the point where they might as well leave the game (then again, if you die once playing solo the game is over too)
-Rounds can be long

Conclusion:

I fell in love with this game the first time I played it and every friend I recommended it to liked it aswell. Seeing it on the sale moved me to write a review and made me wish they made some DLC. I might have forgotten some points since I haven't played it for some time but I have only good memories of it. Get it (if the genre speaks to you) and you will not be disappointed.

If you have no interest in playing coop then by all means ignore this review.

Nothing is wrong with this game, I quite enjoyed it, however I bought it for cooperative gameplay. In coop in Risk of Rain the death of an ally is in effect the same as if you died because the leveling deficit you suffer on revive is insurmountable. You can continue playing but you might as well be on single player.

Wonderful rogue-like.
Great 12 characters. 12 different playstyles.
Ranging from melee combat to super ranged (yes, I'm looking at you Engineer).
Plenty of items to unlock and collect. Each item makes a difference and all are useful.
The game is hard. At least at the start. You need to unlock items (doing various achievements), so they will drop in your next playthroughs.
You just can't be a winner playing the game for the first time, sorry.
Worth every penny.

If you dislike hard games then don't pick this game up, but if you have no aversion to difficult games then buy this game! It's one of the best rouge-like games ever, on the same level as Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac imo.

It's hard to say something about Risk of Rain that hasn't already been said in the reviews already, so I guess I'll tell the story about how I came across it:

To start off, I'm a musician. You may be thinking to yourself now: "Why is this guy telling us this, and, more importantly, why should I care?" Well, I'll tell you. A few years ago, I went to a music camp for the summer, and one of my favorite things to do was to go out into a nearby field with a small speaker and go stargazing after our performances. We'd find some chill music to pull up and just talk about our lives. One night, this guy suggested we listen to a soundtrack he had, from a game called Risk of Rain. I was intrigued, as I love video game soundtracks, so I told him to plug it in. I was immediately hooked on the music, and I decided to go investigate the game. I played a gameplay trailer, and it looked interesting enough. I was a fan of roguelike games, and the pixelated art style was always something I enjoyed.

A couple weeks later, I went and purchased the game and gave it a go. Being a pretty experienced, I felt ballsy and started on Hard mode... That was a mistake. I was murdered within about 15 minutes. However, after switching down to the normal difficulty, I started playing through, and I loved every second of it. Before I realized it, the difficulty was no longer increasing, and the timer read 150:00. You know you've found a fun game when you can invest two and a half hours into it while having it feel like a matter of minutes.

A couple of days later, I had every class unlocked and just enjoyed myself. I told my friends about the game, got some co-op games going, and just felt happy. The combination of a fun and challenging game is something that I've always enjoyed. The simplicity, and yet precise technicality of the game, was made perfectly. And of course, the music. The soundtrack of the game is just beautiful, and matches the tone and setting of the levels perfectly. If you wanna give it a listen, here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ypzpl02Rps
Anyway, that's the story of how I found this game. So, if you want a fun game with infinite replayability, and an overall great experience, buy this game. It was worth every penny for me. ;)

I like this game, a lot. I know it’s not as polished as it could be. I know sometimes it glitches and you fall through the world. I know that having pixel for pixel really messes with camera placement and allows you to see past where the level was really meant to be viewed. I know it’s not perfectly balanced, and has ‘easy win’ strategies. However, I like this game. It’s challenging, it’s fun, it’s addicting. Playing as the different characters increases longevity, challenge artifacts increase longevity, and achievements increase longevity. The soundtrack has a very nice sound to it, it just exudes a kind of charm that I enjoy. Coming back to play a game or two every now and again is fun, I do recommend it if it looks like you'd enjoy it.

I have played this game a lot and I have to say its amazing if this game is on sale buy it if it isn't on sale buy it.This game is fairly easy once you learn the controls and how to prioritize your time because when playing on harder difficulties time management becomes important because as you spend more time in game the difficulty increases and if you spend too much time grabbing items you will eventually die. But once you get to a certain point you can literally stand go pop some popcorn grab a coke (or some Mtn Dew if U MLG) and watch as your enemies fall before you and you start raking in the dough. One thing that I do not like about this game though is the local co-op. While it is fun to play the screen doesn't split so when you try to go away from your partner you can't see yourself. So I would like to see a dynamic split screen where when go farther away from your partner the screen splits in half between you and when you get close enough you share the same screen (kinda like the new lego games). This small adittion and being able to see your items while playing co-op would make the game much more fun to play

TLDR: This game is awesome buy it

:DISCLOSURE: I received a copy for the purpose of review. That in NO way affects the outcome of this review. If a game is crap IMO I will say so. Thank you Steamified.

Risk of Rain is an intense rogue like. The game play is fantastic classic 8/16 bit platformer action. You have four abilities to aid you in the journey of survival. Twelve different characters you can play. Three game modes that scale well, the easiest of which does not allow the saving of progress. Combine all this with TONS of items that offer passive and on use advantages. The item combos can get crazy, like in The Binding of Issac. AND if you get more than one of an item it will stack.

This game is great if you have only 15min to play or 5 hours to play. Easy to pick up and get the hang of, but difficult to master no doubt. If you are new to rogue like games this is a great intro to the genre. Overall I would rate this game 8/10. It is a must play for any rogue like fan.

This game is just purely amazing.
Imagine if someone combine The Binding of Isaac with Super Mario and guns.
Yeah its nothing like that, its better.

I see a problem with it though, its so FRUSTRATINGLY hard that you very easily get bored of it.
This is the perfect game if you like guns, missiles, rocket launchers, snipers, chefs, items, bombs, drones, death, feeling like a god, feeling like a peasant, your friends, 4 player coop, secrets, more secrets, destruction or even teddybears. YES, THERE ARE TEDDYBEARS IN THIS GAME (no spoilers here)

i would rate a "♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥. I ♥♥♥♥ing died a-♥♥♥♥ing-gain." out of 10.

Really fun to learn with a friend, dying horribly over and over until you finally crack the game and begin to slowly climb towards that magical moment when you reach god tier and DESTROY everything on the screen. Extra characters can be unlocked during play, although the starting character is one of my favourites. Theres tons of items which may be confusing at first, but you eventually figure out which ones are useful.

Some may find the gameplay repetitive, and it kind of loses its replay value once youve exhausted all possible item builds - also known to be a little buggy at times. Still a lot of fun especially coop, and an awesome soundtrack!
