About This Game

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.

The three main goals for our game are simple:

1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.

2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!

3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

''..joy comes from amassing items, gaining experience and watching your character evolve into a godly killing machine.'' - Joystiq

''This game is immaculate. The enemy design, the sound effects, the powers, the fights, all of it feels wonderful.'' - Eurogamer

"..a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I've experienced in such games" - RockPaperShotgun

Fun to play solo.
Really fun to play with friends.
Just fun to play in general.

The art is cool.
Gameplay is very enjoyable.
The challenge is just perfect.
Enemies are unique.
All the classes were fun to play and unlock.
Items in game were all different and cool to see.

Can't recommend this game enough. (I really do suggest it with friends, though.)

I love risk of rain! Its a great game that can last for hours and hours. I have had alot of fun with this game because of all the items and replayability. The class system is awesome! The art and music is great and I could go on for hours about all the things I like in this game. But I will say there are some things I would really like to see added to the game.

Modding support! man would that be the coolest thing for a game like this! My friends and I have often thought of how you could balance super smash bro characters in or DBZ characters into the game haha.

Risk of Rain 2? I would love this! Risk of Rain 2.... sounds good dosnt it?

Anyway guys I recomend this game its alot of fun.

Really fun side-scroller. Tension ramps up quickly between the choice of spending time to find upgrades versus playing quickly as difficulty rises as the time passes.

Risk of Rain is an action platformer/adventure game with randomized elements. The game is set in the distant future, where space transportation is common. Space trains carry passengers and goods all across space. A particular space train, however, had some very special cargo. Through a series of unfortunate events, this space train gets shot out of orbit and crash lands on a mysterious planet.. with one survivor.

The game is set in the distant future, where space transportation is common. Space trains carry passengers and goods all across space. A particular space train, however, had some very special cargo. Through a series of unfortunate events, this space train gets shot out of orbit and crash lands on a mysterious planet.. with one survivor.

First off, I would like to say that the arcade styled, 8-bit graphics are amazing, along with the catchy music and gameplay of each character, Risk of Rain never gets repetitive. Every level feels different, the monsters spawn randomly among you, you must defend yourself and find the teleporter. Once found, kill the boss, varying upon the level (each level has it's own difficulty) and survive 90 seconds until the next level. Along your journey you will come about upgrades to improve your characters overall ability. You may also stumble among a broken drone which you can fix and it will fight aside you. Risk of Rain may have a limit of achievements but the feeling of completing one fills you with adrenaline knowing you have completed another of the 15 steam achievements. The game also has its own completion bar signalling how far through you are of the game. It also has a records tab which shows you your best moments. The Enforcer class will most likely be your first earned class. This is so slow but heavily armoured and attacks do much damage. My favourite class is the default, Commando. Fast speed, good attacks and reasonable attack damage.

In Risk of Rain, I would love to see maybe an online part of the game where you can connect with a random instead of having to play with your friends. Something else cool that could be added is maybe a player vs player feature, or a boss only gamemode. The things that could be added are limitless, Risk of Rain offers a new type of 'fun'. The default controls of the game are questionable, but you can still customize it to your needs. I have my movement buttons as - WASD (W being jump) My climb button is spacebar and my attack buttons are the arrow keys. If I had a mouse with buttons on the side I would use them. This game will suck your time out and make your fingers hurt from smashing that attack button because obviously you hit harder when you press harder. And don't question the story this game tells in the background if sanity and peace of mind is what you like. Really, don't go deep into it. You'll never think of those poor Lemurians the same way you did before.

I would like to thank my friend Flood Fetter for gifting me this game, I first played it early 2015.

Great game, great premise and allow you to tailor your runs a bit by waiting for time to build, thus increasing difficulty, or breeze through and get less loot.

It's hard to find and capture all the characters and the progression but I love it. I just wish it ran a bit better in latter levels because due to the possible amount of enemies and particles/effects on the screen at one time; it does bog down a bit even on my fairly large rig.

Regardless, love this game and the gene of bullet-hell, shmup and others and have quite a collection going. Love them all.

I love this game so much I decided to do my first review about it.

While there are many games out there that are difficult for the sake of being difficult, few of them find the balance of also being fun at the same time. I've white-knuckled my way through many many sessions on this game, but I've never rage-quit on behalf of the insanity that eventually brought my demise. Instead, Risk of Rain achieves that "just one more time" feeling and I've been coming back to it for years.

In the vein of some other modern roguelikes, this game maintains the "one and done" approach, but there are items and unlockables that carry over to your next playthrough. Items are gathered throughout the game and (at least initially) are randomly generated. This puts the emphasis on plowing forward instead of staring at menus and preparing your loadout. Some may not like the lack of control this gives them, but as someone who spends way too much time in other RPGs trying to find that "perfect" build only to get crushed in the next dungeon, it is refreshing to just let the chips fall and roll with what the lords of RNG provide.

The action is non-stop and the difficulty ramp-up is steep, although once you get rolling 40 minutes can pass by in a fever-dream like state of flow. The graphics are "pixel-art", yes, but unlike the trendy "indie scene" games that explicitly and shamelessly rip-off a style from a 8 or 16-bit game, Risk of Rain has its own unique aesthetic that heightens the atmosphere of the dank and dire storyline.

About the story, the game allows the narritave to develop through devices tied to gameplay instead of bashing you over the head with dialog or exposition. For example, every item you unlock has a corresponding journal entry, and instead of just saying "this increases the jump height" it is written out as the main character would describe it in a research report. There are also "monster logs" that you can collect that share this style of curious observation about the things encountered in the alien worlds. This lets the story unravel in sync with the gameplay and provides a compelling reason to progress and solve the mysteries laid out before you.

In a time where "roguelike", "pixel-art", and "indie" have become tired buzzwords, Risk of Rain awakens the sense of excitement and wonder that these types of games should evoke.

Risk of Rain, a great rogue-like filled with action packed fun that gets harder as time progresses. Each level has different kinds of mob spawns depending on the region/map type. Difficult , but not impossible, to beat solo. Great co-op play. The artifact system brings you back and alters each playthough heavily.

Pros:
-Runs on potatoes (lower fps on co-op due to explosions/extra rendering)
-Great soundtrack
-Great controlls
-Large character selection and unlocking new characters
-Replayability is good, but semi repetative if you're bad at unlocking characters.
Cons:
-More expensive than your mom
-Difficult to stay alive as certain classes (Git Gud)
-Co-Op doesn't have servers to connect to, making finding a co-op partner slightly harder.

Graphics/Artwork: 9/10
Sound/Audio: 9.5/10
Controlls/Mechanics: 8/10
Replayability: 7.5/10
Overall: 9/10

I can't believe I only discovered this game a few years down the line... Convinced my brother to get it with me and we're having a blast playing it! Each character is different, game is actually quite challenging, and there are global variable changes to keep things even more intersting/harder once you get really good at the game.

For co-op, I can't recommend this game more.
For solo, it's a lot of fun too but it really shines co-op.

A fun and challenging 2D sidescrolling rogue-like in which you can get a demi-god adrenaline rush by stuffing many powerful artifacts down your space trousers and making hundreds of dudes face the wrath of your explosive fury. Start as one dude, unlock many other dudes with varying abilities by doing certain things, like beating the game, etc.

The difficulty of the game slowly increases as time goes on, so you and probably at least one other friend should split up, and balance between murdering space dudes, getting their exp, gold, items, collecting items from chests by spending money you've collected (because videogame), and finding the teleporter in a timely manner which initiates a gauntlet for about 90 seconds and spawns a boss which you must then destroy. After the gauntlet is over and the remaining enemies are dead, any player can use the teleporter to proceed to the next level.

Rinse and repeat several times until you get to the final level, and kill the final boss who wants you and your comrades incredibly dead.

In short:

> Explore, shoot things, collect items, find teleporter
> Hold out, shoot more things, enter teleporter
> Repeat, reach final level, beat snot out of final dude, probably unlock more dudes
> Repeat
> Go mad with POWER!!!!!!!

Risk of Rain, Challanging, fun, exciting and... BECOME GODLIKE (if you can that is.) Really good if you want to kill some time and want a challange. With every mins past, the game gets harder and harder, collect item to survive the harsh planet and maybe.. Just maybe with all that looting and item stacking, you can BECOME GODLIKE!

250+ Hours into this bad boy.
Thrash, bash, smash, hack, and slash through hordes of monsters all the while unlocking artifacts that can drasticly change the game (and usually not to your advantage).

This game will keep you moving, testing your reflexes, and you ability to observe the battlefield - soon to be bloodbath.

Risk of Rain is punishing; brutal, and at times, just plain cruel. When a game mode is annotated with "you will die" - its not a warning, Is a fact.

Elite mobs that can electricute, burn, and even explode.

I can say I have beaten the game on monsoon difficulty, with every artifact active. And now you know why I have 250 hours logged :-)

11/10 would get electro-flame-sploded again.

There are a few bugs here and there. Today I got stuck INSIDE a wall on the map "Sunken Tomb" with the Huntress after sinking to the bottom of the map. I got teleported inside the walls and couldn't escape (blinking didn't work as you cannot blink trough walls) so I had to cancel my run :( Some other run earlier one entire map was just NO CLIP. I kept falling trough the map. This was stage 1 starting a fresh run. bugs like these are annoying. Minor bugs like floating chests are uncommon. This happend May 2016. Overall still a very VERY nice game!

One of the best games that I've ever played, no question there. I love this game, great stress reliever, tons of fun (and bosses). Easy to get the hang of, hard to master, controllable amounts of rage until there is more than ten jellyfish on screen. Steam resets my Playtime Records every time I restart my computer, so that (0.3 hrs) is not correct, more like 300+ hours. There is one problem though... I think its just a very rare bug, but one day when I decided to wake up and play this game (Just like every day for the past month), Everything was gone. All my stats, unlocks, logs, etc... (I did try uninstalling the game and reinstalling it, but no dice). Still a Great game, got good enough to beat the final boss on a "first play" slate on Monsoon. 10/10

Risk of Rain is the first rogue like game that I have played, and its been the most fun and angering experience at the same time. The randomly spawned areas and loot makes for a unique experience every game you play. The classes provide a great variety that caters to every style of play. Overall this game was fun to play and will always be fun to come back to and play again and again.

Fun little roguelike that's rather difficult when you first start, but once you get used to how everything handles, you'll enjoy it quite a bit. Controller is highly recommended for this game, as keyboard controls are rather difficult to use.
