About This Game

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.

The three main goals for our game are simple:

1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.

2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!

3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

''..joy comes from amassing items, gaining experience and watching your character evolve into a godly killing machine.'' - Joystiq

''This game is immaculate. The enemy design, the sound effects, the powers, the fights, all of it feels wonderful.'' - Eurogamer

"..a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I've experienced in such games" - RockPaperShotgun

I have 100% completed this game multiple times over, and I have to say, this is EASILY worth the $10 if you like games similar to this.

Pros:
-Nice & Consistent art style
-Fun & Unique characters
-High replay value (Every run is different)
-Things can spiral out of control
-Very difficult
-Multiplayer
-Both keyboard and controller buttons work & feel very nice to play with

Cons:
-PC players don't get automatic matchmaking, while PS Vite & PS4 players do.
-Multiplayer is buggy
-Multiplayer needs port forwarding or externall programs such as Hamachi or the Evolve Client (not the game)
-You haven't bought this yet
-Many things can crash the game easily during runs of 100+ minutes and you need to be careful of those

Now, this game gets much less fun if you don't enjoy roguelike games or games that are very hard, and you should keep that in mind before buying it.

This game is hard.
Unforgivingly hard.
This game will punish you for breathing.

In Risk of Rain, Difficulty affects not just the enemies HP, but also affects their damage dealt, the starting cash, starting health, it even affects the number Bosses that may spawn during a wave.On Drizzle difficulty, the difficulty rises one level per every 9 or so minutes. On Rainstorm, it's around 4 minutes. I don't even want to think about what may be in store on Monsoon difficulty(Difficulty rises every 3 minutes, Blighted enemies might spawn, you start with 15 gold, and the Teleporter takes 120 seconds to spawn, compared to Rainstorm and Drizzles's 90 seconds). Progress isn't saved on Drizzle, so think of it as more of a training difficulty.

Artifacts can either be a blessing or a curse, allowing you to only spawn one type of enemy per map(Kin, which is on the Dried Lake Map), to only spawning Elite class monsters(Honor, which is on the Desolate Forest Map). Ultimately, it's up to you to go for the artifacts or not, they're entirely optional and unnecessary to actually beating the game. Unless you're a Completionist. In that case, go for it. Have fun with the Map Variants.

Each character has their own special usages, from the beginning class Commando, who implements his gun to move quickly and shoot just as fast, to the defense-focused Enforcer, who uses his Shield to withstand powerful attacks and can shoot faster with the Shield up with his Shotgun and Concussion Grenade.

Items are vital to your survival, as you can carry any amount of items, excluding Use-Items. The Items in Risk of Rain are as numerous as they are diverse, from the simple Crowbar, which allows you to deal 50% more damage to enemies above 80% HP, to the Infusion, which gives you +1 max HP for every kill you get.

In my honest opinion, this game is fantastic. I love it, it's addictive and I can't get enough of it. But be warned. It's not easy. Providence will never be your friend. To anybody who has this game or is buying/considering buying it: Kudos to you.

Everybody else can suck a lemon.

The longer you play this game, the harder it gets. You thought, "Impossible" would be the hardest? No. There's three more difficulties after Impossible. Good luck with that madness. (It can range from millions of pigs rampaging at you to millions of lasers being fired at your face. Just though I'd tell you)

But the game is really good.

I thought that it was time to do a review on this game after play almost 100 hours. This game is amazing! It is a lot of fun to play it solo as well as playing it with friends. There are lots of characters and items to unlock. When you beat it you can add artifacts that add an extra challenge to the game.

I would reccomend this game to anyone that likes these type of games!

Great game, almost endless replayability, loads of unlocks and little things that it takes a long time to notice.

The only thing I really want the devs to improve upon is connecting to games with friends, as it seems that I almost always spend ten minutes or so connecting and troubleshooting before we all get into the lobby, and then sometimes my friends will randomly disconnect,

Endless replayability that seems to never get old + countless items and 12 characters to play = hundreds of hours of fun. Simply put, you will "beat" the game many times, but unlocking everything and exploring all the game has to offer is the true treasure at the end of the road. This game WILL NOT disappoint.

It's hard to say something about Risk of Rain that hasn't already been said in the reviews already, so I guess I'll tell the story about how I came across it:

To start off, I'm a musician. You may be thinking to yourself now: "Why is this guy telling us this, and, more importantly, why should I care?" Well, I'll tell you. A few years ago, I went to a music camp for the summer, and one of my favorite things to do was to go out into a nearby field with a small speaker and go stargazing after our performances. We'd find some chill music to pull up and just talk about our lives. One night, this guy suggested we listen to a soundtrack he had, from a game called Risk of Rain. I was intrigued, as I love video game soundtracks, so I told him to plug it in. I was immediately hooked on the music, and I decided to go investigate the game. I played a gameplay trailer, and it looked interesting enough. I was a fan of roguelike games, and the pixelated art style was always something I enjoyed.

A couple weeks later, I went and purchased the game and gave it a go. Being a pretty experienced, I felt ballsy and started on Hard mode... That was a mistake. I was murdered within about 15 minutes. However, after switching down to the normal difficulty, I started playing through, and I loved every second of it. Before I realized it, the difficulty was no longer increasing, and the timer read 150:00. You know you've found a fun game when you can invest two and a half hours into it while having it feel like a matter of minutes.

A couple of days later, I had every class unlocked and just enjoyed myself. I told my friends about the game, got some co-op games going, and just felt happy. The combination of a fun and challenging game is something that I've always enjoyed. The simplicity, and yet precise technicality of the game, was made perfectly. And of course, the music. The soundtrack of the game is just beautiful, and matches the tone and setting of the levels perfectly. If you wanna give it a listen, here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ypzpl02Rps
Anyway, that's the story of how I found this game. So, if you want a fun game with infinite replayability, and an overall great experience, buy this game. It was worth every penny for me. ;)

I like this game, a lot. I know it’s not as polished as it could be. I know sometimes it glitches and you fall through the world. I know that having pixel for pixel really messes with camera placement and allows you to see past where the level was really meant to be viewed. I know it’s not perfectly balanced, and has ‘easy win’ strategies. However, I like this game. It’s challenging, it’s fun, it’s addicting. Playing as the different characters increases longevity, challenge artifacts increase longevity, and achievements increase longevity. The soundtrack has a very nice sound to it, it just exudes a kind of charm that I enjoy. Coming back to play a game or two every now and again is fun, I do recommend it if it looks like you'd enjoy it.

:DISCLOSURE: I received a copy for the purpose of review. That in NO way affects the outcome of this review. If a game is crap IMO I will say so. Thank you Steamified.

Risk of Rain is an intense rogue like. The game play is fantastic classic 8/16 bit platformer action. You have four abilities to aid you in the journey of survival. Twelve different characters you can play. Three game modes that scale well, the easiest of which does not allow the saving of progress. Combine all this with TONS of items that offer passive and on use advantages. The item combos can get crazy, like in The Binding of Issac. AND if you get more than one of an item it will stack.

This game is great if you have only 15min to play or 5 hours to play. Easy to pick up and get the hang of, but difficult to master no doubt. If you are new to rogue like games this is a great intro to the genre. Overall I would rate this game 8/10. It is a must play for any rogue like fan.

This game is just purely amazing.
Imagine if someone combine The Binding of Isaac with Super Mario and guns.
Yeah its nothing like that, its better.

I see a problem with it though, its so FRUSTRATINGLY hard that you very easily get bored of it.
This is the perfect game if you like guns, missiles, rocket launchers, snipers, chefs, items, bombs, drones, death, feeling like a god, feeling like a peasant, your friends, 4 player coop, secrets, more secrets, destruction or even teddybears. YES, THERE ARE TEDDYBEARS IN THIS GAME (no spoilers here)

i would rate a "♥♥♥♥ing ♥♥♥♥. I ♥♥♥♥ing died a-♥♥♥♥ing-gain." out of 10.

I have played this game a lot and I have to say its amazing if this game is on sale buy it if it isn't on sale buy it.This game is fairly easy once you learn the controls and how to prioritize your time because when playing on harder difficulties time management becomes important because as you spend more time in game the difficulty increases and if you spend too much time grabbing items you will eventually die. But once you get to a certain point you can literally stand go pop some popcorn grab a coke (or some Mtn Dew if U MLG) and watch as your enemies fall before you and you start raking in the dough. One thing that I do not like about this game though is the local co-op. While it is fun to play the screen doesn't split so when you try to go away from your partner you can't see yourself. So I would like to see a dynamic split screen where when go farther away from your partner the screen splits in half between you and when you get close enough you share the same screen (kinda like the new lego games). This small adittion and being able to see your items while playing co-op would make the game much more fun to play

TLDR: This game is awesome buy it

Really fun to learn with a friend, dying horribly over and over until you finally crack the game and begin to slowly climb towards that magical moment when you reach god tier and DESTROY everything on the screen. Extra characters can be unlocked during play, although the starting character is one of my favourites. Theres tons of items which may be confusing at first, but you eventually figure out which ones are useful.

Some may find the gameplay repetitive, and it kind of loses its replay value once youve exhausted all possible item builds - also known to be a little buggy at times. Still a lot of fun especially coop, and an awesome soundtrack!
