About This Game

Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op. With over 100 items at your disposal, you will find the tools you need to find the teleporter back home. Discover a myriad of randomly chosen stages, from the desolate forest to the frozen tundra.

The three main goals for our game are simple:

1. Design a game that is randomly generated every play-through, to keep replayability high and fresh.

2. Time = difficulty. The higher the in-game time gets, the harder the difficulty gets. Keeping a sense of urgency keeps the game exciting!

3. Be enjoyable, regardless of whether you win or lose. No more fussing with complex and non-intuitive gameplay patterns. Players should not blame the game for their loss!

''..joy comes from amassing items, gaining experience and watching your character evolve into a godly killing machine.'' - Joystiq

''This game is immaculate. The enemy design, the sound effects, the powers, the fights, all of it feels wonderful.'' - Eurogamer

"..a ridiculously compelling procedurally generated side-scrolling platform survivor-me-do, with multiple characters to play as, single and co-op play, and some of the hardest-hitting deaths I've experienced in such games" - RockPaperShotgun

One of the more original rouge lite/likes. The game constantly spawns enemys and as the timer increases the enemys hp and abilities will as well, after 40 mins the game is just insane with explosions and such. Instead of isometric (top down) it's 2D platforming, permadeath, RNG item drop greatness.
11/10 (+1 for couch co-op)

a good niche game! lots of replay to find all the stuff. it does get fairly pretty hard, and it's more fun if you play with more people if you want to grind out things.

This game is hard. I reached level 3 once and at this point I don't think I will ever reach level 4. I just don't have the skills for this type of game.

Playing it on Linux requires an Xbox controller, other types don't work and using the keyboard only makes the game harder.

Still, I enjoyed every minute.

Only buy it if randomly generated permadeath sounds like fun to you, and you're ok with never finishing it.

Great soundtrack, fun gameplay, interesting pixel graphics. This is definitely a game to pick up (especially with the summer 2016 sale price being 75% off). One complaint is that online multiplayer is a bit difficult to set up (I had to use the evolve social platform to get an IP address to give out), and local multiplayer requires a controller. Sometimes the game will crash if you play fo r a long time and accrue a significant number of items, which can be disappointing.

The story and lore pages are interesting and fun to read, from the characters, to the monsters, to the items. You get a real sense of accomplishment the first time you reach a new level tier or finally manage to beat the game. Well worth the money, I've played probably well over 100 hours (most of which were on a different PC than the one I have Steam on).

Definately one of the best multiplayer roguelikes out there. Although insanely fun, it does get hard rather quickly, so I recommend playing with a few friends.

It's hard to say something about Risk of Rain that hasn't already been said in the reviews already, so I guess I'll tell the story about how I came across it:

To start off, I'm a musician. You may be thinking to yourself now: "Why is this guy telling us this, and, more importantly, why should I care?" Well, I'll tell you. A few years ago, I went to a music camp for the summer, and one of my favorite things to do was to go out into a nearby field with a small speaker and go stargazing after our performances. We'd find some chill music to pull up and just talk about our lives. One night, this guy suggested we listen to a soundtrack he had, from a game called Risk of Rain. I was intrigued, as I love video game soundtracks, so I told him to plug it in. I was immediately hooked on the music, and I decided to go investigate the game. I played a gameplay trailer, and it looked interesting enough. I was a fan of roguelike games, and the pixelated art style was always something I enjoyed.

A couple weeks later, I went and purchased the game and gave it a go. Being a pretty experienced, I felt ballsy and started on Hard mode... That was a mistake. I was murdered within about 15 minutes. However, after switching down to the normal difficulty, I started playing through, and I loved every second of it. Before I realized it, the difficulty was no longer increasing, and the timer read 150:00. You know you've found a fun game when you can invest two and a half hours into it while having it feel like a matter of minutes.

A couple of days later, I had every class unlocked and just enjoyed myself. I told my friends about the game, got some co-op games going, and just felt happy. The combination of a fun and challenging game is something that I've always enjoyed. The simplicity, and yet precise technicality of the game, was made perfectly. And of course, the music. The soundtrack of the game is just beautiful, and matches the tone and setting of the levels perfectly. If you wanna give it a listen, here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ypzpl02Rps
Anyway, that's the story of how I found this game. So, if you want a fun game with infinite replayability, and an overall great experience, buy this game. It was worth every penny for me. ;)

Awesome with friends
Awesome alone
Awesome on keyboard
Awesome with controller

This game will suck your time out and make your fingers hurt from smashing that attack button because obviously you hit harder when you press harder. And don't question the story this game tells in the background if sanity and peace of mind is what you like. Really, don't go deep into it. You'll never think of those poor Lemurians the same way you did before.

I like this game, a lot. I know it’s not as polished as it could be. I know sometimes it glitches and you fall through the world. I know that having pixel for pixel really messes with camera placement and allows you to see past where the level was really meant to be viewed. I know it’s not perfectly balanced, and has ‘easy win’ strategies. However, I like this game. It’s challenging, it’s fun, it’s addicting. Playing as the different characters increases longevity, challenge artifacts increase longevity, and achievements increase longevity. The soundtrack has a very nice sound to it, it just exudes a kind of charm that I enjoy. Coming back to play a game or two every now and again is fun, I do recommend it if it looks like you'd enjoy it.

:DISCLOSURE: I received a copy for the purpose of review. That in NO way affects the outcome of this review. If a game is crap IMO I will say so. Thank you Steamified.

Risk of Rain is an intense rogue like. The game play is fantastic classic 8/16 bit platformer action. You have four abilities to aid you in the journey of survival. Twelve different characters you can play. Three game modes that scale well, the easiest of which does not allow the saving of progress. Combine all this with TONS of items that offer passive and on use advantages. The item combos can get crazy, like in The Binding of Issac. AND if you get more than one of an item it will stack.

This game is great if you have only 15min to play or 5 hours to play. Easy to pick up and get the hang of, but difficult to master no doubt. If you are new to rogue like games this is a great intro to the genre. Overall I would rate this game 8/10. It is a must play for any rogue like fan.

Really fun to learn with a friend, dying horribly over and over until you finally crack the game and begin to slowly climb towards that magical moment when you reach god tier and DESTROY everything on the screen. Extra characters can be unlocked during play, although the starting character is one of my favourites. Theres tons of items which may be confusing at first, but you eventually figure out which ones are useful.

Some may find the gameplay repetitive, and it kind of loses its replay value once youve exhausted all possible item builds - also known to be a little buggy at times. Still a lot of fun especially coop, and an awesome soundtrack!
