Door Kickers is out!

Door Kickers is out now!

http://youtu.be/swp9d9tqg7M

It’s been one year since we’ve entered Early Access on Steam, one and a half since we began crowdfunding. One and a half years of constant updates, great feedback from the players and two-way communication with you guys.

And we’ve taken the process to completion - Door Kickers moves on from Early Access.

For those that actually play each version, what’s new? The Campaign is IN. You have 3 campaigns now, with more to come! We’ve also changed the way Single Missions count now - troopers deaths are no longer saved in those. Think of Single Missions as your proving ground, where you try to beat your own performance, and campaigns as your real job - do the objectives and keep the troopers alive. Can you handle that? Maybe also in Iron Man Mode?

Another new and long in-coming feature are multi-layer maps. You can go up and down, exploring some new and old locations in a new way.

There’s also a new scenario type - Dope Raid - which tasks you not only with securing the suspects, but also capturing evidence before it gets trashed. And it will get trashed, unless you move swift and to the point.
And no, you cannot shoot everyone.

One last thing… this vesion will reset all your stats and mission completion. So why are you still reading this, get back to 3-staring everything!

What else is New or Changed since last version of Door Kickers:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Features:
- Random killhouse generator + over 90 new random house layouts.
- Over 50 new maps (in campaign, single and random combined).
- New door types: grating doors / padlocked doors.
- New item: Bolt Cutter. Useful for cutting down padlocks.
- New item: Breaching Kit
- Silenced handguns. You asked for them, you got them.
- Can copy/paste/default equipment for each class.
- Improved loading time.
- Enemies start with their weapons lowered, until alerted.
- New music.
- Loading screens with tips&tricks. Can be disabled in options menu.
- Improved path-editing when multiple paths are over-imposed: press SHIFT for locking on a single path.
- Added stretch-to-fit video option (for monitors that are not 16:9).
- Separate volume option for for ambient sounds.
- Improved weapon/trooper stats to better account for their performances.
- Added "reset progress" option.
- Countless other small changes, tweaks and overall improvements.

Fixes:
- Fixed items showing up randomly on random maps. Really.
- Fixed uppercase letters not working on OSX.
- Fixed wall shadows showing up in editor.
- Global statistics are no longer incremented when watching replays.
- Fixed stars not adding after finishing new maps.
- A bug where troopers could go through doors without opening them.
- Right-click menus outside of screen bounds.
- Tazer sometimes not shooting.
- Sniper now kills all enemy types with one shot.
- Sometimes exporting replays to video without sound.
- Ambient sounds playing at full volume no matter of you location in the map.
- Troopers stuck with playing the "use hidden camera" animation all the time.
- Grenade trajectory looking OK but grenade hitting wall.
- Sounds sometimes getting cut while in a very busy scene.
- Removed single plan / single trooper challenges from maps where it couldn't be done.
- Breaching/opening doors when behind walls.
Modding / Structure changes:
- FOV can be modified per weapon/item.
- Challenges are now configurable for each map.
- Can publish new maps to Steam Workshop directly from the editor.
- Equipment.xml is now split into 4 different xmls (items, pistols, rifles, shotguns).
- Can now update mods if you have more than 50 published mods (special dedication to RedPanda for giving us extra work to do).
- Can now modify/add new portraits (data/config/user_list.xml can be modified/added to by using filesystem_mount.xml).

“If you like your puzzles pausable and plausable, your firefights fierce and your tactical options abundant, this is sure to be one of the best things you buy this year.”

“If you’re a fan of the SWAT games, Rainbow Six, Frozen Synapse, (...) then you’ve probably got Door Kickers pencilled in your diary, perhaps even accompanied by a couple of exclamation marks.”

“It’s a thing of beauty and manages to capture the planning and satisfying execution of more complex strategy games, as well as the gung-ho and the popping-off of growly man in military shooters. (...) It’s probably the best man-shootery game I’ve played in years.”

About This Game

Door Kickers is an innovative realtime strategy game that puts you in charge of a SWAT team and lets you command them during a tactical intervention.

Analyze the situation, plan team routes, choose equipment and breach points and coordinate multiple troopers to reach the hostage room before the bad guys get to press that trigger.

It may sound daunting, and like real world CQB combat, it sure is. But most levels can be completed in minutes and on the fly improvisation works. Achieving the perfect planning, getting the mission done with no false steps, that’s a skill harder to master.

Quick Points:

  • 2D, Top Down for optimal tactical analysis
  • Real Time With Free Pause
  • No turns, no hexes, no action points or awkward interfaces
  • Realistic but action packed
  • Non-linear levels, freeform gameplay
  • Mission editor and modability
  • Unlimited gameplay via mission generator and level editor
  • Single Player (but MP might come later)

Pros
+solid gameplay
+passable sound effects
+good level design, and distinguishable terrain. You won't get confused as to what's what. Very useful for this type of game
+Ability to plan out the execution of an entire mission, and watch your men methodically carry it out in seconds.
+Ai works well at following said plan
+Customization: Lots of gear to choose from and unlock.
+Level designer/randomizer: Unlimited replayability

Cons
- A little bit pricey for my taste. I prefer $10-15 at most for an indie game of this quality
- Still a few bugs to iron out
- Can get hard to plan moves for your last member on your team, as the order lines stack up

Techical issues
-Can't seem to plan my men to swap their weapons twice during the planning phase. I can tell my men at a certain point to pull out their secondaries, but I'm unable to tell them to swap back. I have to wait till they actually change weapons to order them swap back at a later time. Can be annoying when trying to unlock achievements for each level.

-Unable to hide other units command lines during planning phase. When you have commands issued for a large amount of soldiers, it looks like pasta all over the place. Can make it very hard to issue orders to the last soldier on your squad.

-Sometimes I want to order a certain swat member to throw a flash bang through a door, but a nearby teamate stacked on the door recieves the order instead. The game needs a toggle function for ordering stacked teamates to do something instead of the default choice.

-When cancelling a command, it sometimes does not dissapear, making you have to backtrack your soldiers moves a good bit to fix it, or restart them completely.

Really just to affirm that the other positive reviewers are right;

It is a very well composed game and provides a great deal of fun with probably 100 hours of 'true' replayability, and then countless more with the map generator and very active _free_ modding community.

Probably the key enjoyment is you can execute your plan 10+ times until its perfect and win the 'level' in sub 60seconds :D Then you can do the plan again with different loadouts and explosives etc :D

..
So yes it is worth the ~$20, but if you get it for less than that its a bargin, truely/genuinely/tbh.

First Impressions:

Challenging, but plenty of content to keep me busy via a map editor (includes Steam workshop) and level generator. I also like the fact that my troops can be customized and level up assuming you can keep them alive...reminds me a bit of XCOM in that regard. Overall, a great first impression and I'm looking forward to spending more time with this game. It might be a bit much for some casual gamers as you will have to micromanage a bit, but it's easy to jump into given enough time.

A solid, fun little game, that suffers from a lack of polish and explanation. Gameplay mechanics are good, and the controls are very simple. They can be picked up very quickly without any kind of tutorial. This is fortunate, since the game does little to explain itself other than a few hints on the controls in the opening missions, and a "How To" that says the same information. Unfortunately, any further explanations of game mechanics, controls, or progression are completely missing. For what is a relatively simple game, this shouldn't have been an issue. However, after having to constantly minimize the game to try and search for answers to simple gameplay mechanics, it become frustrating for something that should otherwise be a quick game to play.

Although this game doesn't do anything revolutionary, it is solid. If it had more polish, I would most likely recommend it, but there are too many small problems to justify what should be an easy-to-play game.

Thanks for reading.

Early Access Review
Each mission can be played and planned to your personal preference, go loud, stay stealth and adjust your mission plan mid gameplay with real time pausing. It has a great balance of intermediate to advanced mission planning while being fun at the same time.

Leveling up gives you a higher advantage and you will find you quickly get attached to your troopers - changing the way you plan each misssion to ensure their survivability.

There is plenty of gear and weapons to choose from which you unlock with stars which are given on the completion of a mission. These are easy to achieve so you will be able to get the gear you need for the mission at hand.

The Steam Workshop offers an already huge selection of user made maps, gear and weapons so your replayability is endless.

This is strategy at its core! The tactical options are amazing while the controls are kept fairly simple as opposed to, say, Frozen Synapse. I think it cuts all the necessary clutter for this to be on of the best tactical games of recent times, and the power you feel while your masterplan unfolds is tremendous. Fan of any tactical games, Rainbow Sixes, SWATs or the like? Play this!

I'll admit, I haven't gotten very far, but the bit of it I did play was exceptionally good for what its supposed to be. The controls do seem to be a bit difficult to master, but at least for the simple mechanics, you do catch on quickly.

The action is quite tactical, no nonsense. I definitely get the feeling that there is an incredible amount of depth in the game, and already I'm looking forward to playing again.

The built in mod-ability and mission generation, combined with the fact that the game is built around its solid mechanics (rather than any sort of linear narrative) seems to ensure that the "dollars spent":"hours of fun" ratio is quite favorable.

Solid tactical gameplay with a great feel to it.

Score: 8 / 10

The gameplay is divided into two parts, the planning phase and execution phase. The planning allows you to set up waypoints and stops using radio commands. Once in the execution phase you can watch your plan unfold or at any moment take direct control of your men. Add to that troop customization, gadgets, classes and squad perks, and you've got an enjoyable experience at hand.

To me the game comes across as polished and well made. I enjoy the graphical style and the sound and atmosphere is good. The big challenge lies in creating a plan that'll allow you to sit back and just watch the execution phase. Difficult, but very satisfying when it works.

Like the old Sierra game, SWAT 2 - but good. One-click mechanics make this game a joy to dip into and out of, and it is likely that the modding community will keep this one alive for a long time to come. Absolutely worth every penny.

I have over sixty hours on Door Kickers. If you are at all interested in the subject you should definitely give it a look. The game is already well supported by the community and the Steam Workshop has some excellent mods, weapons and levels already. It's the old SWAT or Rainbow Six from a top down, 2D perspective that puts more emphasis on planning than quick reactions. Check out some of the Let's Play videos out there, or some mission video captures posted on my YouTube channel for more information.

Now that it is in release, there are even more interesting features, the major ones being multistory buildings and drug busts where you have to race to seize the evidence before the bad guys dispose of it. Three campaigns have been added, which are a series of linked missions (also with some branched, optional missions) where you are limited to your existing roster. Without giving away any spoilers, there are a couple of really large maps set on a waterfront and a train station that combine long sight distances, dangerous approaches and unusual rooms and buildings.

The game is pretty much bug free due to the long alpha period, with only a couple of minor items that have to be addressed. There is an excellent level editor that works pretty well, the only really awkward part being the current need to edit the background image (which is the floor or ground of the map) outside of the editor, should you want one that isn't the default grey warehouse floor. The developers have stated that they intend to add that background editing ability into the in-game editor.

Also of note is the excellent Mission Generator. You select the size of the level and the amount of opposition and the game generates a random seed. Then you select either "KillHouse" (for a training map) or "House" (for a real world map) and the game generates a mission using one of the maps in the game. The mission could be just to eliminate hostiles, or escort a VIP, or run a drug bust, or rescue hostages. It's a real challenge because it's newly generated.

Overall this is an excellent value for the price; three campaigns, 80 official missions (once you enable the two new missions via the Mods interface), a Mission Generator and tons of mods already in the Workshop. Highly Recommended.
