It was a great game, but DO NOT BUY IT for Steam because It is not optimized. Let me explain:

If you had an account some years ago and you want to recover it, the first thing you should know is Gamespy was shut down. That means that it’s so hard to keep this account active unless you made a migration before to Origin, or you basically lost all the progress you made with your old account. I couldn’t find a solution for it yet.
But the worst part is, since the Gamespy is not working, you cannot create a new account either. That means... you can only play single player. So this is a multiplayer game played only single player, in 16 boot player maps. So 10€ for a 2005 game with the multiplayer disabled, is not a good deal.

I hope, I really hope Steam will fix this because I feel scammed...

Some people in the comments suggested to visit some webpages like (www.battlelog.co) where they try to keep the game alive. You can do it if you want, it's a good way to take some advantage of the money you spent here.
But since I bought the game on Steam I was expecting to play the game on Steam, and not needing to get by on my own. At least I think the minimum Steam could have done is warning people before buying.

So to avoid further confusion on future purchase's of this game, There is MP still even though EA shutdown the servers, Project reality auto configures BF2 so you can still see PR servers, vanilla BF2 look up BF2 battlelog, and Forgottenhope 2 also auto configures BF2 to see thier servers. In short you have to do a little work/get mods to get MP back otherwise treat it as an SP only game.

Now Singleplayer is almost identical to MP (aside from it being bots instead of players) IF you get a few mods (namely the BF2SP bot changer and 64 player map sizes for SP) Allied intent extended is still probably one of the best mods out there for SP (mainly an SP mod)

In short ONLY get this game if your WILLING to get mods. If you arnt willing your wasting your money as the stock 16 player sp and 16 map size is pretty poor (unless you like the small maps)

DO NOT LISTEN TO REVIEWS STATING ONLINE IS GONE
http://www.wikihow.com/Play-Battlefield-2-Online

Why I bought the game: Nostalgia buy

What I liked about the game: This is classic Battefield as it should have remained, no weapon kits to buy, no flashy gimmicks just raw combat.

What I didn't like about the game: Loading the stages before SSD

Would I buy at current asking price of 19.99? Not without a sale

**Disclaimer**
I would like to state all changes made by the developers of the game after this review could potentially make this entire review irrelevant.

One of the best EA releases of all times. The only game that EA didn't ♥♥♥♥ up after the 1942 sequels.

Well, what can I say about Battlefield 2...Just bought it, started it, and it didn't work. It's a great game in itself, I played it off a CD in years past. But, for some reason, it just doesn't work on my computer anymore. I bought it on Steam, thinking that might solve the problem I was experiencing...It didn't. All in all I would have to say that it WAS a great game, and that I did get countless hours of fun out of it. Though, I did apparently waste $20 on the Steam copy that I wish I could get back to spend on better games. Count me as a $20 poorer, dissatisfied customer for the time being. 9/10 on the game itself, 0/10 on this experience.

I have not ever played BF2 properly, but I have already sunk alot of time into one of its greatest mods Project Reality. In my opinion it hits the perfect balance between realism and a steady playability. There is different arsenals for each individual playable military force available (quite alot), a variety of big open maps, with semi-random objective generation and a realistic movementspeed, which forces the team to use vehicular resources intelligently and keep the flow going. The team will organize itself into squads, each having an individual task or role, such as infantry, artillery or transport, to name a few. The really good teamwork between the squads and the healthy community make sure, that each battle leaves back a unique experience. Project Reality also does not suffer from the gamespyshutdown, since it has its own masterserver.

it's a shame EA abandoned this game,i know the game was old and all but it had (and still has ) an active community, the community that continued to live even after the Gamespy shutdown..........
i haven't played the vanilla bf2 for a while but i still play the mods (Project Reality,Forgotten Hope, etc.) and it makes me not to forget how awesome the gaming community is.
and companies like EA are trying to kill that community, like for f's sake you can't even buy BF2 anymore, you either have to pirate it or find an old physical copy, and they completely removed mod support from their other newer games,in other words they made themselves the only source of new content for games(DLCs and yearly release of games) so they could make more money.
just wanted to tell all this stuff somewhere, and i realised bf2 is not available for sale on steam anymore,so yeah,i decided to write it here.
oh and about BF2 itself, last legit Battlefield game imo,if you happen to find a copy somewhere buy it for the mods, they're awesome.
+
kudos to Bethesda softworks,Bohemia intractive,Rockstar and any other Devs who still support mods..........

The Game is awesome and better than the newer battlefields although the multiplayer stopped its still a good game, there is a way to play multiplayer but im not sure how, the NPC's feel like propper players. This is the top rated battlfield and/or/maybe best game out there.

Yes, yes. Even with the new Battlefields this is still a fun one as there is single player. Techicaly it is single player but it is more like multiplayer without other players.

I Recommend this game because Unlike Most Games YOu Can Go into Singleplayera and play for housrs on end and in community click custom games and hit Special Forces it gives you another 4,5, or 6 maps to play! I Really, Really, Really, Really Recommend you play this!!

What can i say - A real classic of battlefield series.

Much better then most of the fps games out there, like some bad COD ones :(
Sure i own them to, but hey they are just bad, as its kids playing them or ahem those that like to get ahead, with nor aproved metods (Damn euro's spend on the COD and they are worthless!)

Take a break and try this old classic, and its possible to play Local Lan with some messing around, just google it :)

Else go to the COD and get killed and dont even see the one through the wall doing that ROFL - Shame it goes that way for good games

My 2 cents on that - have a nice weekend now kids!, i might take free and return when you all sleep ;-)

And nope not many hours on steam version, as i have it on Origin Client to - not that it makes it better tho lol

*Don't assume that I only have 4 hours of play time.
Battlefield 2 is dead, but Project Reality is still alive. If you are a fan of realistic military shooters, I'd recommend buying this game for the mod alone.
Summed up in a few words: Project Reality is like Arma, but without as much running.
