“Like a socially-aware velociraptor, Redshirt is a clever girl... Smart, savvy, and satirical.”

“Redshirt has everything I've ever wanted in a social sim: satire, addictive mechanics and buckets of cheesy sci-fi puns.”
8/10 – Polygon

“Most games in the life sim genre would punish you for playing incorrectly, but Redshirt thrives on transgressions. Don’t let the charming, low-key tone and gentle referential humor fool you, this is pitch black stuff.”

Redshirt is the comedy sci-fi sim about social networking aboard a space station, starring the station's most ambitious low-ranking peon: you! Navigate the professional and interpersonal politics of the ubiquitous "Spacebook" to curry favor among friends and colleagues. As intense intergalactic conflict rages around you, it's up to you to accrue those all-important "likes" on your status updates! Whether you're looking for love, opportunities for promotion, or even a chance to play Zero-G golf with the captain, you can schmooze your way through social circles and claw your way up the career ladder. Perhaps you too can finally achieve the dream of an off-station transfer, or even the Redshirt's opportunity of a lifetime: being sent on an away-mission!

"Redshirt’s take on science fiction clichés is amusing, telling short stories in the form of status updates and messages, but the activity of playing the game is rather intense, even though it’s a turn-based life management sim. As if accidentally snubbing friends and causing heartbreak wasn’t enough, a short while into your misadventure, a disturbing message arrives. A calamity is coming. The station is doomed. People will die." - Rock Paper Shotgun

"Spying on an ex in a video game even though there’s no tangible benefit to doing so WHATS GOING ON" - Red Door Blue Key

Redshirt received an Honorable Mention in the 2014 IGF Awards for Excellence in Narrative!

Social Networking, But Not As We Know It...

Redshirt is a comedy sci-fi social networking simulation game. Create & customise your character, a brand new arrival aboard space station Megalodon-9, where you start your career on the lowest possible rung: a Transporter Accident Cleanup Technician. You also realise that everyone on the station is required to use the proprietary social network, "Spacebook"!

You hear rumours something terrible will happen soon aboard the station, and it's up to you to stop being a disposable nobody before it's too late! You can do this by interacting (through Spacebook!) with randomly-generated, AI-driven characters with their own unique personalities, trying to win friends and influence station citizens. Or, you can focus on what skills you need to climb the fairly-extensive career tree. Or, save up your KarmaCreds. Or, flirt your way up the station. The choice is yours, and there are different strategies. You just have a limited time in which to do it, otherwise... terrible things will happen. You are a Redshirt, after all!

Features

  • Satirical, tongue-in-cheek social simulation, filled with humour and political intrigue.
  • Detailed character creation: choose from 5 different species, from human to tentacled squid creature!
  • Each game is unique: Megalodon-9 is full of procedurally generated AI-driven characters, each with their own random personalities and profile pictures.

  • Customise station settings: define the kinds of personalities you'll encounter, from friendly chatterboxes to self-obsessed bigots.
  • Update your Spacebook, strategically 'like' statuses, and send private messages to your fellow station citizens.
  • Arrange Spacebook 'events' with your friends, frenemies, and even higher-ranking officers, to influence your relationships and skills.
  • Multiple routes to success through turn-based gameplay, from skills-based diligence, to romance, to charismatic schmoozing.
  • Navigate an extensive, non-linear career tree, by gaining the right skills... or just by making the right friends.
  • Make friends and manage romantic relationships -- if you can handle the drama!
  • Strategically manage your interests and skills.
  • Buy items in the Self-Help Object Purveyor (S.H.O.P.) to increase your stats and skills, from RoboCats to illegal hoverbikes!

  • Away missions!
  • Humorous parody of social networking culture.
  • Puns! So many puns.

This game is what convinced me that the gaming journalism industry was corrupt. There were raving reviews of this by the friends of the devs (which I discovered later), which convinced me to buy it. It's barely a game, it's a bad social media simulator.

Congradulations space person on getting stationed on such a popular and prestigious position Megalodon-9. Sure, it's just a janitorial position, but hey we all have to start somewhere.

The majority of this game is played interacting with 'Spacebook' making friend and inviting them to activities. All this as a means to increase the abilities of the player character in order to take on higher ranking jobs and repeat the cycle.

This system is reminiscent of many visual novels but redshirts lacks any major plot thread to tie it all together which reduces the gameplay loop into watching numbers go up very slowly.

Redshirt is a game that seen like a lot of fun when you think about the idea of it but when it comes to putting it onto to page it doesn't work that well. Lot of parts in the game feel very tedious when it don't need to be, the game itself just feels like your on FaceBook which it the point of the game you make choices and got the worry are you going to be send on a mission and die on it which it is 100% random you can't do anything to not make this happen. Overall I say this only get this game if your a die hard Star Terk fan, I'm not a fan of Star Terk and I think I miss a lot of funny parts out or didn't understand them.

I honestly don't understand why this game has so many negative reviews. It's funny, entertaining, and give you many options and paths to reach your goal, giving it a high replay value. Recommended especially for fans of Star Trek.

This game has the potential to be a decent game, but it has a number of frustrating bugs that have never been fixed that greatly take away from the game experience. For that reason I can not currently recommend this game to anyone, however if they ever issue an update that fixes these bugs then I would definitely change my review to reflect that as the game would be more playable.

Bug #1: Game can become unplayable due to a livelock. To reproduce, wait until the start of a new day when you have one pre-work action available. Bring up the Social Map, then click on any person to bring up their Spacebook profile on the left. Click "Like" on any of their Spacebook posts and the game triggers "work mode" that pops up a dialogue box half on top of Spacebook on the left, and half underneath the Social Map on the right. You have to ALT-F4 out of the game as input is no longer processed at all.

Bugs #2: This is a multitude of identical bugs. Within the Skills & Inventory screen, if you go through each of the available Skills one at a time, then click on each of the "EVENTs" listed for them, it brings up the chosen event on the left hand side pane. Many of these events are buggy however and the actual event that shows up on the left, does not match the name of the event you clicked on on the event list.

I've made screenshots of these bugs in my public Steam profile:
http://steamcommunity.com/id/skeletonbow/screenshots/?appid=247870&sort=newestfirst&browsefilter=myfiles&view=grid

These bugs make the game frustrating and make various paths through the game impossible because you are unable to advance certain skills properly because the events to do so bring up the wrong actual event, so you do not gain the correct skill points.

If they fix these bugs, I will update my review and change my recommendation, but until then I caution people to pass on this game for now.

Before playing this game, I listened to the audio version of the Redshirts novel by John Scalzi in case there was a connection between the two. As it turned out, they aren't related, but both have the same trope-filled sci-fi spoofery and misanthropic humor. And the book is a fun listen, anyway.

I'm noob to social media and Redshirt is basically a Facebook simulator, so there was a bit of a learning curve for me. Once I got past that, I became quite addicted. It's fun to broaden one's network on the space station, set up social events, apply for higher-paying jobs, keep a romance going, and try to reach a successful ending.

The game often feels like a grind when you arrange the same social events again and again to make your stats increase. Also, Spacebook friends sometimes act so capriciously that there is no way to win with them (like real-life Facebook friends I suppose). For example, you might arrange for a social outing but not invite a particular person because he's busy. Then you're told that he got a little upset about not being invited, even though he wouldn't have been able to come. But if you had invited him, you would have lost happiness points since he would have turned down the invitation.

The game is enlivened by witty flavor text, animations, and good music. It's pretty well made but there are occasional bugs. At one point, the game was completely stuck because some flavor text wouldn't appear; I had to terminate the program and reload the save until this problem resolved itself.

Redshirt asks what if online social networking really does end up running our lives. It observes how social networking makes relationships broader but shallower, communication easier yet less effective. It reminds me of some of the work that Christine Love has done.

I'm actually quite surprised by this game, It caught me with its star trek nostalgic screenshots,
but in actual fact its nothing like the screenshots portray it to be.
Infact for a game that is essentially Facebook its actually kinda fun.

If you're one of those people who sit in the corner on your phone checking your latest updates/social spam, this is definately for you!

Let your inner sociopath loose in this anything goes facebook parody game, something is coming to destroy your space base and you only have a limited amount of time to save yourself.
You can do it by sleeping your way to the top and making the right friends, or by working really hard and earning your escape.
Definately got some value to it, and some re-play value, but don't expect it to replace any other of your favourite games with decent graphics etc...
Oh and if you're looking for STAR TREK humour, then this is not the droid you are looking for!

The game is boring because it lacks animation. If you got to see people doing things the game could of been so much better. If you can absorb its content though into real life it can give you some ideas about sending an email to women in real life in an online dating site so I guess its worth $20. Because this game is so boring to play I haven't taken away very much from it but I will give the developers credit for trying. They did a pretty good job with the script. The only entertainment you can get out of playing this game is reading the emails pick up lines social networking forum posts and the descriptions of the activities available and stuff like that but after a couple of hours for me I felt like it was beginning to look pretty much all the same so I got bored and stopped playing the game.

Oops, I forgot to read the description. All I saw was the artwork and the price of $5. Then, I started up the game and saw "SPACEBOOK". My heart sank. Not my cup of synthehol

For the record, the gameplay is some of the most intuitive I've evewr seen. However, read the instructions. In fact, read everything. Great help in winning. The graphics aren't the preatest, but they go wonderfully with the storyline.

Humor based on Star Trek

The game is, in more than one sense of the word hillarious. In this game you are one of the countless "Red-Shirts", that were often used as - alien trap discharge - units in the TOS and TNG Series. Work yourself up, from the security standard issue "Mop the Warp Conduits" - Worker up to high levels of social ranks on a large spaceship on a long term tour.

Oh, and don't forget the merrits of programming the replicators with 999 cat-food recipes, or learning how to use alien melee weaponry as meditative art form. Yes, the game is funny, it has a strong connection to Star Trek, and some other space opera. But I am quite torn if I should give the game a recommendation at all. To a hardcore, blood and grit Science Fiction fan the game can be an outright insult.

Acutally sometimes the game reminds me in one way or another of a "How to die a gruesome death in an entertaining way"-Simulator... Because of the god damn title... not because it is one... and I am always reminded on the "Redshirt Blues"... and some other rather derogative terms used to describe the actual use of sacrificial lambs in modern media.

Yeah, the game is funny - but it's also getting quite boring after a while, and you always think, "Ok, it's in my library now, but I don't have the nerve playing it at the moment..." and you will find at last a dozen of reasons why to let it rot like a lead duck in a swampy pond... mostly because it is as entertaining as the same duck down there.

Pros:
  • The actual "Redshirt" joke.
  • Good learning curve, the game is easy to master.
Cons:
  • Turns into boredom really fast.
  • Can be an insult to a fan of the series.
  • Some of the events in the game can drive you really, really nuts - because... it has a very, very strong Rinse and Repeat feel.
  • Only moderate value for the money rating in my opinion.

Not Recommended, but read further!

The game has it's humorous silver linings - but there is too much low humor in the game to make it really a worthwhile addition to any collection. The price is too high for a casual game that might give you only a limited time of fun, and the time of wearing it out can come very, very suddenly... Oh, and yeah, it has also some dating sim qualities... which - well, darn it - I think I dive for the lead duck, it's more fun!

My Claim: Redshirt is quite possibly the best "Real Life Simulator" ever concieved. Move over "The Sims," because this game gets it right. This is how the real, modern world works so pay attention!

Careers: No one cares about your skills, you education, or your talents. No one is going to read your resumé or give two farts about what you studied in college. All your potential bosses are ever going to do is immediately look you up on Facebook and look at your profile. Do you share thier hobbies? Their political views? Dress the way they approve of? Most importantly, do you know someone that they do? Because these are things that decide if you get hired, fired, promoted or passed over. Just like in real life.

Relationships: Are you handsome? Beautiful? Rich? Smart? Athletic? No one gives a crap. Your Facebook page is your relationship application form. How many friends do you have? Do you follow the latest trends? Do you watch the right shows, listen to the right music, misquote the right famous people? Do you effect an air of false depth by shamelessly cutting & pasting mopey song lyrics without any semblence of context? Ohmygosh, you are, like, so cool, then! Relationship request accepted. Just like in real life.

Finance: In the future no one will ever truly own anything ever again. The future is all subscription based, where "ownership" simply means that you'll be paying weekly and monthly upkeep fees on stuff until the sun burns out and the Universe freezes over. Well guess what, kids? The Future is Now! Watch as every week your pitiful paycheck is immediately consumed just trying to keep the garbage that you bought four months ago from breaking down for another few days! Get sucked into the competetive ego drive that is created by your lame, shallow friends constantly braggging about their personal treasure troves. Piddle away your financial future on a pointless treadmill just to keep up with everyone else in a vain quest for popularity. Just like in real life.

Life: In the end whether you succede or fail, prosper or rot in misery, literally live or die all boils down to your dedication to sacrifice all your personal goals & aspirations upon the blood soaked altar of ephemeral on-line popularity. Your own thoughts, opinions, ideals and very personality shall all be slowly morphed over time to match that of those that you need to suck up to and impress in order to get ahead. Just like in real life.

Summary: If ever there was a game that perfectly, unabashedly and honestly summed up this shallow, sick, cruel, twisted world we live in today... it is Redshirt. No other game is so forthright about telling it like it is. It's not what you know, it's who you know. It's not what you think, it's what your boss thinks. Relationships are just lateral career maneuvers. Friends are just rungs on a ladder, aquired when above you and discarded once below. I highly recomend buying this game (along with the complete DVD set of Geroge Carlin) to every naive, gullible middle-school student in America. Because it's never too soon to start sharpening the knives.

Я, к примеру, люблю жанр табличного микроменеджмента - с удовольствием играю в Master of Orion 3 и Democracy 3, привольно чувствую себя в инвентарных меню Starflight и Out There.

Я, к примеру, люблю жанр табличного микроменеджмента - с удовольствием играю в Master of Orion 3 и Democracy 3, привольно чувствую себя в инвентарных меню Starflight и Out There.

Synopsis: Redshirt is mildly fun, cute, but vastly overpriced nerdservice.

While it tackles an old saw with a new seemingly innovative twist of vicariously experiencing a space adventure from the perspective of a nobody who experiences life vicariously through social networking (wow how meta), the end result is a cute and at first funny menu game that shows itself pretty shallow with time. At first you smirk at all the little references and sarcastic jokes and puns, but then after hours of shifting through menus you frown because that is really all the game has to it. It is unfortunately a one trick pony, and ironically it essentially is the shallow facebook game that this game precisely intends to mock. As an example of art imitates life, it works and I get it. As a game that is an enjoyable time sink? Not for $20. It is a phone ap game at best for less than five.

Update 1-19-15

It ain't worth 9.99 either. This is a glorified cell phone app.

DO NOT BUY

The price of this game is absurd, it started out being a funny satire of facebook; but after a few hours it became a really shallow micromanaging game, based entirely in menues. I thought I would be seeing around the station or something, but you just look at menus the entire time, eventually after you become better friends or have higher relationships with people, you can suddenly be sendt out in an "away team" (the only part of the game not in a menu, but you just sit there watching people, either die, or not die.) If you are unlucky enough to be on an away team with a friend/girlfriend/boyfriend and they die, your character goes into a -100 mood and use a couple of days buying items that make you happy, and doing activities with others (via menu...) to be happy again.

It was kinda fun at the beginning, I was smirking at the whole - mocking facebook - aspect, until I realized that was all the game was. The ending was the thing that made ME go to a -100 mood, it was as if nothing I had just done mattered, and I was introduced to a small summery of stats, and then directed right back to the main menu. It has no replay value, and for the price, I was expecting a LOT more.

This game should be priced under the $5 / 5€ mark. The graphics are lacking, the characters look horrible, eventually everyone looks similar, there are no decent faces - female characters seemed like the men just with added boobs. The only thing you see regarding the space station, is the actual space station viewed from the main menu and intro, and where you're character stands (in some kind of hall way?) so it's the same static image constantly - oh wait, you also get to see the same background every time you get sent out in the away team.

The sad thing is, this is still an improvement from their other games. I'm guessing just to stay away from anything made by Positech. After this, and the whole Kudos series, I'm officially giving up.

Honestly, I don't understand how Positech hasn't gone bankrupt. The reviews from Rock Paper Shotgun, The Escapist and Softpedia, reflect exactly why no one should listen to them. Ever.

Compared to other games of it's genre, it is overpriced, though it matches the proce of the Positech game this is a re-painting of: Kudos 2. For those that like the idea of a social management game, there are java based phone games, android games and I'm sure IOS games that have more to offer in the free to $10 range, but on the PC, Positech's Kudos and this are it without counting the Sims, which is really a whole different experience.

It is a social life management game. You are given so many tme units a day to allocate your time and try to manage the life of your character, try to inch up the job ladder and anything beyond that is fed as backstory clues but the game itself is of a style more befitting a tablet than a PC interface.

As far as the style of game goes, it is pretty average in it's genre, and have seen cell-phone games that had more to offer. For those that like the genre of game (which I do, in some of my moods) it's worth getting, but unless you love the game style, not at $20. $5 to $10 would be a much more typical pricetag for what is being offered. If you don't already know and like the genre, there are much better games out there to experiment with the genre, starting with the game this one almost clones: Kudos 2, which you can usually pick up for $5.

I bought this back when it first came out because I thought the premise was intriguing. I've always been a fan of Star Trek, and I thought a game about how those poor, unfortunate redshirts and other nameless, unimportant crew members survived the insane situations that inevitably befell the crew would be neat. I thought a game about being an underapprciated but vital part of a team would be fun.

This game is not that game.

Let's go through each of the claims this game makes any why I think most, if not all of them, are bogus.

1: "Satirical, tongue-in-cheek social simulation, filled with humour and political intrigue." If by "political intrigue" you mean "boring, petty interpersonal drama that I get enough of in my daily life," then yes. This game has political intrigue coming out of its nostrils. I will say that it is at least mildly satirical, as the implication that social media is a poor substitute for actual interaction is a perfectly valid one. I will admit, though, that I didn't find too much about this game to be funny.

2: "Detailed character creation: choose from 5 different species, from human to tentacled squid creature!" It isn't that detailed, I'm afraid. Additionally, it actually makes very little difference what species or even sexual orientation that you choose, except in very rare circumstances (such as being depressed because you don't have a significant other and everyone you can date is not interested in people of your gender, and the one person who is hates your guts; I don't need a repeat of my everyday life, thank you).

3: "Each game is unique: Megalodon-9 is full of procedurally generated AI-driven characters, each with their own random personalities and profile pictures." Each game is unique, but the NPCs aren't sure the names and species and personalities might change, but they're all the same, vapid, uninteresting characters.

4: "Customise station settings: define the kinds of personalities you'll encounter, from friendly chatterboxes to self-obsessed bigots." This bit is accurate, at least.

5: "Update your Spacebook, strategically 'like' statuses, and send private messages to your fellow station citizens." This is also an accurate feature.

6: "Arrange Spacebook 'events' with your friends, frenemies, and even higher-ranking officers, to influence your relationships and skills." Despite being accurate, I'm not sure how this and the prior item are even features.

7: "Multiple routes to success through turn-based gameplay, from skills-based diligence, to romance, to charismatic schmoozing." This is accurate, to a degree. You cannot rely on just one to succeed, however; the best route always involves using everything at your disposal. And you'll need to: without romance, for example, your morale may drop .And if you're in a bad mood, your work will suffer. If your work suffers, say good-bye to that promotion. And before you know it, you're another soulless drone lamenting your lack of a love-life and your boring, dead-end job, anxiously awaiting the weekend so you can go to wine-tastings to get your mood back up for the coming week, only to repeat the cycle ad infinitum.

8: "Navigate an extensive, non-linear career tree, by gaining the right skills... or just by making the right friends.
Make friends and manage romantic relationships -- if you can handle the drama!" On a personal note, this is something I dislike about this game, especially when paired with the above item. Don't get me wrong, I love playing games where I get to be a manipulative schemer. But when the best run I ever had involved buddying up to my supervisors and discarding them when I'd gotten a promotion, that may say something about how viable a skill-based playthrough is.

9: "Strategically manage your interests and skills." See the aforementioned bit about wine-tastings.

10: "Buy items in the Self-Help Object Purveyor (S.H.O.P.) to increase your stats and skills, from RoboCats to illegal hoverbikes!" True, and also a requirement.

11: "Away missions!" Also known as "which one of my friends is going to die miserably and send me into a self-destructive spiral?"

12: "Humorous parody of social networking culture." A parody, perhaps. But I wouldn't say it's a particularly humorous one. I found most of the jokes to fall flat.

13: "Puns! So many puns." Yes, but they're not particularly funny puns.

Now that that's done with, here's my final conclusion. Redshirt was fun, for about 10 minutes. Then it became very, very tedious and very, very boring. And while that's fine to a degree, especially if your game is parodying something as boring as social media, the game itself has to be fun. Quite simply? Redshirt is not fun. I cannot suggest that anyone buy this game for anything more than $3.00.

Seriously, wait for it to go on sale if you have to buy it.

TLDR: Try and get the game during a sale, or in a bundle. It's not worth $10.

Star Trek fans will pick up on some humour, otherwise it is a relatively easy game to play for all, without too much effort, and can be picked up and started up again without having to remember or re-learn how to play.

It's a time-waster game that mimicks Facebook, and various Sim-type where you learn skills, and try to play your career, your relationships, or bribery-tactics into getting off the space station before it goes kerboom.

It has some fun to it, but the longevity is really determined by how much you like repetitive play. It's quirky, good for a laugh, but not a $10 one.

A game about social networking.. and guess what.. it´s just as boring as the real deal -.-

It repeats itself quite fast, there is way too few change in the daily activity and your "goals" as well as the actions of the "people" are senseless and stupid.

Add this to the high price for such a game and the very few connections it actually has to Star Trek, which it wants to imitate with this "Red Shirt" thing and the away missions.. leaves only one thing

Thumb down!

The disappointment first arrived when I realized that, yes, the artwork in-game is worse than the preview screenshots. Since then that disappointment has mutated into full-blown ennui. I caution anyone considering whether or not to buy this game to wait for a discount. Please don't buy this game at its regular price; don't make the same mistake that I did.

At first glance, Redshirt looks like a SciFi offering along the lines of Long Live the Queen, Magical Diary, and so on, but don't be fooled. While other slice-of-life simulation/RPG blends provide a decent story and actual rewards for game progression, Redshirt laughs in the user's face as it generates more and more lifeless content to grind through.

All the shortcomings of an independent development house mixed with all the malice and hate from triple-A publishers.
Caveat emptor.

The Good:
- Star Trek inspired universe
- multiple species available as player races
- wide range of interests and skills

The Bad:
- clunky engine and interface
- no quick-save/load
- unnecessary actions-per-day economy
- fast-paced gameplay mixed with slow progression

The Ugly:
- the graphic designs are just cheap--no other word for it
- the NPCs have zero personality beyond randomly generated messages and posts; cardboard and forgetable
- mind-numbing grind that never really pays off

Redshirt is a Facebook simulator with Sci Fi window dressing. Your mission is to social engineer your way to the top of the space station hierarchy. Along the way, you can make friends, start (and end) relationships, and arrange events with your cohabitants.

The gameplay involves making a limited number of moves per day on "Spacebook". This includes liking posts, sending messages and friend invites, and inviting friends to events. These events not only bring you closer to your friends, but will also change your interests. You must balance your interests to make friends with whoever your desired target is (either a goal given to you by the game, or the hiring manager at the next job you want). During the day you will also have to work, which will give you money and have an effect on your relationships.

Redshirt is one of those games where it's fun to tool around in for a few minutes, but after a bit you feel like you have seen everything that the game has to offer. I managed to get a really good promotion by dating the hiring manager, but the only reward I really got was that I could do the process all over again for an even better job. For those that enjoy that type of manipulation, maybe the fun can last for a few cycles. For me, I got bored rather quickly. The main feedback you get from your actions is your changing relationship status with other inhabitants of the space station. It comes in the form of the green and red bar that will be familiar to anyone that has played the Sims. The real issue I had with it was that there is not much separating one character from the next, besides a cartoon portait that looks a little bit the same from one character to the next. besides alien race of course. You never really feel like you are interacting with separate characters, like you would in the Sims for instance.

I do not recommend playing Redshirt. I felt like I was just playing Facebook with generic robots, which I guess in the end was what I was really doing. From my time with it, I didn't feel the motivation needed to keep advancing.

Really really really boring. What's the purpose of playing a game that feels like a chore to get through instead of entretainment?

Just glad i got it real cheap off a bundle otherwise... what a rip off.
