  • BUGFIX: Game is now properly saving after leaving station early.
  • BUGFIX: Screen resolution settings are now being properly saved.

“Like a socially-aware velociraptor, Redshirt is a clever girl... Smart, savvy, and satirical.”
7.5/10 – PC Gamer

“Redshirt has everything I've ever wanted in a social sim: satire, addictive mechanics and buckets of cheesy sci-fi puns.”
8/10 – Polygon

“Most games in the life sim genre would punish you for playing incorrectly, but Redshirt thrives on transgressions. Don’t let the charming, low-key tone and gentle referential humor fool you, this is pitch black stuff.”

A játékról:

Redshirt is the comedy sci-fi sim about social networking aboard a space station, starring the station's most ambitious low-ranking peon: you! Navigate the professional and interpersonal politics of the ubiquitous "Spacebook" to curry favor among friends and colleagues. As intense intergalactic conflict rages around you, it's up to you to accrue those all-important "likes" on your status updates! Whether you're looking for love, opportunities for promotion, or even a chance to play Zero-G golf with the captain, you can schmooze your way through social circles and claw your way up the career ladder. Perhaps you too can finally achieve the dream of an off-station transfer, or even the Redshirt's opportunity of a lifetime: being sent on an away-mission!

"Redshirt’s take on science fiction clichés is amusing, telling short stories in the form of status updates and messages, but the activity of playing the game is rather intense, even though it’s a turn-based life management sim. As if accidentally snubbing friends and causing heartbreak wasn’t enough, a short while into your misadventure, a disturbing message arrives. A calamity is coming. The station is doomed. People will die." - Rock Paper Shotgun

"Spying on an ex in a video game even though there’s no tangible benefit to doing so WHATS GOING ON" - Red Door Blue Key

Redshirt received an Honorable Mention in the 2014 IGF Awards for Excellence in Narrative!

Social Networking, But Not As We Know It...

Redshirt is a comedy sci-fi social networking simulation game. Create & customise your character, a brand new arrival aboard space station Megalodon-9, where you start your career on the lowest possible rung: a Transporter Accident Cleanup Technician. You also realise that everyone on the station is required to use the proprietary social network, "Spacebook"!

You hear rumours something terrible will happen soon aboard the station, and it's up to you to stop being a disposable nobody before it's too late! You can do this by interacting (through Spacebook!) with randomly-generated, AI-driven characters with their own unique personalities, trying to win friends and influence station citizens. Or, you can focus on what skills you need to climb the fairly-extensive career tree. Or, save up your KarmaCreds. Or, flirt your way up the station. The choice is yours, and there are different strategies. You just have a limited time in which to do it, otherwise... terrible things will happen. You are a Redshirt, after all!

Features

  • Satirical, tongue-in-cheek social simulation, filled with humour and political intrigue.
  • Detailed character creation: choose from 5 different species, from human to tentacled squid creature!
  • Each game is unique: Megalodon-9 is full of procedurally generated AI-driven characters, each with their own random personalities and profile pictures.

  • Customise station settings: define the kinds of personalities you'll encounter, from friendly chatterboxes to self-obsessed bigots.
  • Update your Spacebook, strategically 'like' statuses, and send private messages to your fellow station citizens.
  • Arrange Spacebook 'events' with your friends, frenemies, and even higher-ranking officers, to influence your relationships and skills.
  • Multiple routes to success through turn-based gameplay, from skills-based diligence, to romance, to charismatic schmoozing.
  • Navigate an extensive, non-linear career tree, by gaining the right skills... or just by making the right friends.
  • Make friends and manage romantic relationships -- if you can handle the drama!
  • Strategically manage your interests and skills.
  • Buy items in the Self-Help Object Purveyor (S.H.O.P.) to increase your stats and skills, from RoboCats to illegal hoverbikes!

  • Away missions!
  • Humorous parody of social networking culture.
  • Puns! So many puns.

This review is appropriate for the 1.04 release as of 2/11/2014.
I recently picked up this game on their $1 sale on Groupees in Be Mine 11, and I have to say that while I enjoyed the game, I believe that around $1 is what the game is worth. The gameplay is reminiscent of other turn-based character sims such as Princess Maker and Long Live The Queen - you have a set number of actions and turns a day with which to improve your character and get to know people around the station. You earn money by going to work every weekday, and you have the weekends off with which to do whatever you want.

While I recommend the game, I do so with a caveat - get it for cheap. It's good to see more character-based sims, but there are a lot of problems with Redshirt I found annoying. For instance, if you're in a relationship, your partner will repeatedly bug you every day, even if you spend every action in both weekdays with them, they'll still feel hurt and lonely and want more attention. Also, interests seem to be very difficult to sway back and forth, which is a vital part of getting more friends on Spacebook, towards the late game, especially since one of the best early ways to make friends is to take them to one of the healthy cheap lunch places - which jacks up your Fitness interest. I would have preferred a system where you gained levels in interests much as you did skills, instead of simply having 100% with which to split amongst the varied things you have to do in a day's time.

I do enjoy the game's sarcastic tone of humor, and am glad to see more games of this style, so I can say it's worth at least a playthrough - as long as it's a playthrough that only costs one or two Karmacredits.

Sadly this game has suffered on steam as a casualty of idiots giving idiot reviews. All the player has to do is just a little bit of research, to discover this game is made by the British company (Positech) that makes the very successful games "Democracy" and very importantly, "Kudos (original, and Kudos Rockstar and Kudos 2). ALL of these other games are "casual simulation spreadsheet" games that playout different scenarios.

THIS game is basically "Kudos DeepSpace 9". The developer however, wanted to take its spreadsheet games in a new way that hadn't been parody'd much in video games "yet", why not re-work their spreadsheet interface mechanics of their life-casual-sim Kudos, with an interface that is based on facebook?

What IF, instead of facebook being a place where you talked about what was going on... what if it was the true reality? Where parties, life-events, relationships, and so forth, originated on facebook, and then played out in life? THIS is Redshirt, or as it is accurately called "Spacebook" the game.

Its a fun twist on the Kudo's game style, set in a very star-trek themed universe, ran from a spacebook interface. I highly recommend it. I will see what kind of replay value it has, but for now, I can say, it has been a fun casual play, enjoyable, and creative.

I think the developers should make a demo, but until they do, I suggest you download one of the Kudo's demos... and then just immagine the interface re-worked into a facebook style of menu-systems, with a clever set of space-themed events and opportunities.

This game is absolutely hilarous if you've ever been a part of Facebook, whether you liked it or not!

If you use the activity feed here on Steam, you'll totally understand what I'm talking about.
Redshirt deals with many complicated social interactions ranging from cause and effect of inviting and talking to certain people and forgetting about others. Misunderstandings and jealousy from your coworkers adds to the chaos and comedy in this game.

9/10 Not much of an in-game tutorial available, but fairly understandable anyway!

So much fun! Very addictive! I do not have a Facebook account, so I can only imagine that the features of Spacebook(in game social network) is based off Facebook. If you have a Facebook account then you know already all the things you can do within it. Redshirt takes those similar features of Facebook and makes it it the only way to interact and progress through Redshirt. Basically you are lowest ranking official in the game, and in order to grow higher in ranking you need to make friends, get along with multiple species, like people's statuses, send personal messages, create statuses of your own, and even flirt to make a name for yourself with the many species within Spacebook. I would highly recommend getting this game at a discount. While it is very fun and addicting , you will enjoy it even more getting this during a sale.
