I used to think early access game were just not great at all, my expections for them were always low since i expected them to be full of bugs or hardly playable since its still getting developed.

Aerena proved me wrong. And I have loved what i have seen so far.

It's easy to learn and quickly enjoyable. Get familair with the Characters and shells. Give the bots a try to learn the characters and over time u can develop your own strategies based off experience (like chess or snakes and ladders) and off you go.

You can play in the league in which there are rank tiers, yet it doesnt bind you to only play against your own tier. Play against someone in a higher tier and gain even more points, or if you lose, lose less points. Giving you the positibility to call yourself the master of aether.

Finding a match is rather easy and quick, just one simple click away select your champions, shells and you are ready to battle.

Both sides will start with 15hp and who ever teared their enemys ship first will win! Lowering down the ships HP can be done by either attacking the ship directly, getting a little help from a shell or killing your enemys champions.

Each champion has their own abilities to attack your enemy or their ship, but those i will leave for you to discoved and pick whats best for you ;)

Ærena: Clash of Champions isn't your standard turn-based tactical game. Ærena places you directly into the battle for Æther--there's no slow start--things go BANG and BOOM right from the beginning!

If you can, imagine a system similar to League of Legends, where you earn points and use those points to purchase new champions. This is the system employed by Ærena and it does a good job of keeping players engaged.

Not only is the in-game currency/point system similar to League of Legends, but the champions have a similar feel, which is awesome because in most turn-based tactical games you don't command CHAMPIONS but rather generic units. In Ærena, the champions have beautiful, vibrant rendering and their abilities are dynamic unlike the generic abilities units have in most turn-based tactical games.

Ærena is a 100% PvP game, which I love! You can practice with the AI but that gets old, its human competition that drives this game! Similar to other ELO/RP based PvP games, you can rank up from Bronze to Æther Master. The average match takes about 10-15 minutes so this game will not consume your life unless you choose.

Since I purchased this game (Alpha) I've seen numerous updates. The devs are constantly adding new content and they stay in close contact with the player-base. Recently, players voted on a Top-10 list of 'Wanted Features.' The devs are now working diligently to apply as many of the requested features as possible.

Recently a new patch was released. As with most games, a new patch usually means a couple small problems, from which this game is not immune. However, the devs worked hard and fast to eliminate those problems so the community could once again enjoy the game. In fact, my account glitched out after the last patch and one of the devs personally responded to my request for help. He logged into the game and fixed my problem! Talk about service--this is a FTP game!

I'm not sure what more I can say to entice you to play other than, "If you don't try Ærena: Clash of Champions, you're missing a diamond in the rough" (although this game is beautifully polished).

Come find me in the Ærena. I'm on my way to Æther Master. I'll see you there!

Aerena has currently 2 different "modes" available.

1.) Ranked Matches against other players.

The ranked matches against other players are based on a rank system.
This rank system provides you points for wins, and takes away points for losses. If you fought someone with a higher rank (someone from a higher league) then you, and win you get more points (if you loose you loose less) then you would gain if you fought someone of your rank.
This system is basic and very effective.

If you hit the "search" button to find a ranked match against another player, you move to a screen where you can

a) choose your airship
- this has currently no effect whatsoever to the match, but it is planned to create diffrent kind of ships with diffrent kind of
stats, which have a high influence to the main battle

b) Your champion lineup
- You can choose 5 different champions, each with diffrent hp and unique combat skills
- durng the match you can only have 3 champions active at the same time
- based on the current arena players need to think carefully which champion to take

c) 3 different "shells"
- shells contain special "magi spells" which can heal, damage or even teleport champions
- shells can also attack the enemy ship
- they have special requierements, which you need to gather during the combat
- shells can be obtained in the shell factory and while fighting against bots/other people

Once you are ready you hit the "ready" button and will be send into the arena ASAP

The Combat system is as simple as effective:

Each player places 3 champions on the battlefield, 1 after another. The player has to make sure to check the enemies champions and try to counter them.
After that The turn based combat begins. Each champions has 4 actions available. <Move> <Attack> <Use shell> <Use skill>
You can only do 2 actions a round, f.e. <move> <attack> or <attack> <attack> or <attack> <Use shell>.
Once you finished your round your opponent's champion is about to act.
Each turn has a time limit of 1 minute to prevent going AFK.

The main goal is to destroy the enemy ship. The ships have 15 hp. If you attack them directly they loose hp equal to your champions attack power. If you kill an enemy champion the ship looses 2 Hp - but also gets 2 Aether.

These Aether are used to activate your shells. The Aether does not dissapear once you used them, so you can use diffrent shells one after another.

To activate special skills champions need to gather Aether also. As soon as a champions turn is starting he gets 1 Aether. For each attack he gets another Aether.
The normal Skills take away 2 Aether, the Ultimate takes all.

You can gather Aether for your ship and your champions with moving onto the special Areas which can heal, give Aether or even Damage you.

If a player has problems with understanding which skill / shell does what he can easiely click onto the champion/his own ship and Info boxes will appear and inform you about everything. This also works with enemy champions!

2.) The second gamemode is the fight against Bots.
This game mode is the same like playing against players, but you do not gain or loose points after a match.
While fighting against bots, the difficulty increases the more often you win against them. This is a good training opportunity.

The Shell Factory

The shell factory produces shells every 30 minutes, but can only obtain up to 3 at a time. This way abuse is prevented.

The shop

The Shop is currently not available.

Aerena is currently Early Access, and for a game in Early Access, it is absolutely awesome.
During my gameplay i encountered: 0 bugs.
The fights are tense and fun for everyone who likes PvP. Dont run away because it is turnbased, come and try it out yourself!

This game is said to become Free-To-Play after release, but noone knows how it is going to work out. Pay2Win? Pay2PlayEasy? All we can do is wait and hope the best.

The developers are active in the forum and inGame and listen to the (currently quite low) playerbase. They improve the game with each update and provide great rewards for active players.
Extra copies, free champions after release, Aetherpoints, Shells everything. The currently top player was invited to help create a new champion - how much more awesome can Developers be?

Dont hesitate, pull yourself together, and buy this game! 8€ is not that much, and you get an absolutely great PvP game for your money! Each and every purchase helps the Dev's to improve the game and pull it out of its Early-Alpha-Phase!

Backlog Clearing #5

I've been a huge fan of turn-based games, AO (Atlantica Online) being one of the most awesome turn-based game ever and was really looking forward to trying this game out few months ago.

However when I played it for abit, I could not understand the gameplay well, things seems cluttered and I was lost (also lazy to learn :tank:). Gave up pretty quickly as the game wasn't able to catch my interest.

------However.. I tried it again recently :)

WOW!! I'm really impressed with the new patch. It really dumb-things down so that I understand it without the need to study in-depth. The simple yet interactive tutorial/quest taught me how to play almost immediately. I will definitely be playing more of this game and would buy more copies when its bundled again to give to more peeps :)

Pros: Easy to get into, fun strategic turn-based combat system. Incredible Devs and Support which responds quickly to feedback and other suggestions.

Cons: Need to purchase everything to unlock now!

Already racked up 100 hours play time on what is going to be a real gem of a game. Really simple and easy to get into, just fire it up, press a few buttons, and you're in a queue for a match. Ideal for when you have 10-15 minutes to spare and want to just do something quick, however it's also pretty good for long gaming stints as well, as the variety of heroes and tactics means that no two games are ever the same. Since you're playing other people, you're going to have to try to outmaneuver and outwit a human mind, while they are doing the same to you.

The game itself is played out on 6x6 square grid, and its all about trying to move your players around the board, turn by turn, using their various attacks to try to kill your opponents heroes or his ship directly. Once you lose 15HP it's game over. So, do you rush the ship and try for the quick win? Do you play defensive, and try to pick off their heroes 1 by 1, do you go with a ranged setup, turtle in and shoot his ship from afar while you repel his attacks? Each game requires different tactics because each opponent is different, each champion is different, and each opponent uses each champion differently. The champions have all the bases covered - Long range but weak attack sharpshooters, High attack but low health glass cannons, Strong but slow moving tank units, units that can push you back, units that can pull you forward, units that can attack without line of sight. The longer your champions remain on the board, the faster their attack bars charge up, and you can gradually perform more and more powerful moves... There are also shells included which are like 1 use charges, you build up charge by damaging the enemy ship, moving your hero onto a charge square on the board, or by taking damage to your ship - shells can be used by consuming these charges, and can be used to heal your heroes, to directly attack the enemies heroes or ships, to charge your heroes bar, to move heroes around the board and switch places with them, and many more options. Problem is, you only get 3 shells, so you need to choose wisely which 3 suit your playstyle and tactics best.

The game is still early Alpha stage, but already there feels like a solid foundation of players there. The devs are really active and approachable, and even spend time in game which is refreshing! Definately one for the future but if you can afford to, dive right in and pre-purchase to help the devs out a bit.

Easily an 8/10 this game, and I can see that improving as it develops. Very good fun, and potentially (depending on whom you play) very challenging... Easy to learn, but hard to master.

(Note this is a mostly Deathmatch 1 v 1 multiplayer game. There is a single player AI mode for practising, but it's mostly geared around playing against other people. Currently there is no chat or VOIP in matches, and just a normal chat window in the lobby - Not necessarily a bad thing, but just be aware it is not a single player game atm, and all the features normally associated with a multiplayer game aren't in yet... Though not having to put up with someone calling you a noob because they just killed your champion isn't a bad thing!)
