We still have yet to see a true successor to the immense scale offered by SimCity 4. It has everything from the peaceful zen of settling a farming village in rolling hills, carving out a bustling coastal metroplolis, or the dirty fun of managing the man-made mountains of your region's garbage city.

The modding community has really made this game shine. At the minimum I recommend the Network Addon Mod (NAM) because of the improved traffic simulator - even if you choose to not increase the road capacities or include new highway and rail components. A full NAM install will add a good bit of content, so choose carefully when doing a custom install if you dont want your menus to get too bloated.

I have also managed to get the game running smoothly on my modern hardware (3770k + Radeon 7850). This game is known to erroneously detect moden Radeon HD 7xxx series GPUs as the old non-HD 7000 series. In the game's GraphicsRules.sgr file I commented-out the entire section on "radeon slow path for partial depth buffer copies" and added a new rule for the "AMD Radeon HD 7000 Slow-Down Fix" posted in the simtropolis forums - this resolved choppy scrolling issues.

I also use the following launch options set in steam:
-intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:directx -w -CPUcount:1

These options: disable intro, enable and set custom resolution, directX video output, windowed mode, use only one cpu.

You know how an Italian chef kisses his fingers and says something in Italian that translates to "A masterpiece" after tasting their own dish? That's how I feel about this game.

This is my favorite city building game, and for good reason. It's rare that a game can endure longer than 10 years, but this is one of those games that I keep coming back to again and again. This is one of my all time favorite games.

I am very glad I did not buy the latest Sim City because this is so much better. If you want it to be updated a bit more just add some mods. Brilliant game and I recommend it to every one!

First off I will say that my hour count is not correct, I played this for hundreds more hours on the disc version of the game. I caved in for the Steam version so I don't need my optical drive installed.

This game is my all time favorite game, nothing has come close to beating it. This game released more than 10 years ago still holds up very well thanks to the modders and the community of this game. If you don't like something about the game then search Simtropolis for a mod to fix it.

As a beginner the modding might seem a bit scary. Tons of dependencies! What do I do?!? I started by installing the mods slowly. First the NAM mod which is essential, then other things such as added trees, buildings, etc. You don't need to install every mod at once to have fun in this game. Just be sure you install all the dependencies to the mods your installing, or else you'll get dreaded brown boxes all over your city (no fun!).

If you need to compare this to modern city builders such as Cities Skylines or Simcity 5 I still think that it beats it. Maybe it's just because I have a great nostalgia about this game. Cities Skylines is an excellent successor to this, but it just can't replace this game in my heart. Compared to Simcity 5, this game is amazing. Bigger cities, doesn't need Origin, and no major "Agent" problems.

Whether you want to build an uber realistic city or just a casual city this game is definitely for you. It goes on sale for $5 during the sales, so if you can wait then I would recommend it. If you want a 3D city builder with easy to install mods Cities Skylines is probably for you.

Also, before running this game check out the guides on Steam on how to run this on modern hardware. My system only needed some tweaks, but yours might need more. My system specs: AMD FX 6300, 8gb DDR3 RAM, AMD Radeon HD 7870, MSI 970a-g43 AM3+ motherboard.

Get ready to waste hours of your life creating the perfect interchange!

A quiet country town, a polluted industrial city or a modern and technological metropolis? The choice is yours.
SimCity 4 is a city building strategy game that after 10 years (!) from its release remains one of the best in its category (personally the best). Your job is to be a major with the power to decide everything, from the terrain morphology to social politics of the city, it's urbanistic development, the transport ways and public services, from budget for education and health care to the one for police, etc...
Very intuitive, you must provide jobs for the three social categories of inhabitants in the game (low wealth, medium wealth and high wealth), places to live and roads of communication to reach their job.
Despite you are a sort of God or dictator, some council members will help you to administer the city, warning you of critical problems regarding specific categories such as traffic, education, pollution, public services' coverage and so on...

PROS:
  • A very good, intuitive simulation
  • Active modding community
  • Very detailed and great building variety
  • Enjoyable for a vast audience due its flexibility
  • Fantastic graphic and low requirements
  • Good sound and effects

CONS:
  • You can't play without mods
  • Sometimes could be frustrating
  • Occasional crashes and rendering problems on modern machines
  • VERY ADDICTIVE

Conclusion: you will hate EA for the sequel of this fantastic game :D

In SimCity 4, you are the mayor of a city. You build streets and roads, zone zones for people to build houses, corporations to build offices and services and industries to build factories on and you build public services like police and healthcare. The game is really good in itself, but what really makes it so good that I'd call it my favorite game of all times is the great(And notably well organized) modding community. Even if you plan to just play vanilla, I'd recommend getting the Network Addon Mod(NAM), which fixes a lot of things with the games flawed traffic simulations.

After playing Cities Skylines I was impressed but I was still constantly itching to play this. 12 years old and it continues to be the greatest city builder in my opinion.

Build your own city and see how far you can go, or you can build your city and destroy it!! Cool thing about this game is you can drive/fly helicoptors and cars in your own city. You can also create your very own sim!

11 years old and still an amazing game, especially with the modability. Still waiting on that next great city builer sim, though...Cities: Skylines came close, but it's just not what I'm looking for. How many more years will it be before someone steps up and makes a better city sim than this? It's not looking very likely at this point.

One thing I like about this game is the realism. You zone land, it starts constructing, then you have plausible buildings start to pop up. Something I can't stand about modern city simulators is this cheesy, colourful, unrealistic look it has. I want my cities to actually look like they do in the real world...Not a ♥♥♥♥ing 3D cartoon city where Jimmy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ed Neutron lives.

Easily the best SimCity yet. Don't bother with the new one, this one will suck your time away more and has a lot of cool addons and mods. Be sure to get NAM (Network Addon Mod) to make the traffic better and you're all set.
