I'd like to start by saying that if you have played previous Cabela hunting games, don't be put off buying this game by those games.

I was sceptical about getting it myself, because of some of the arcadey titles that Cabela have released in the past. I was pleasantly surprised by this game though, very pleasantly surprised. It is much more of a hunting simulator this time round.

You begin by playing through the tutorial mission that is very linear and a disappointing start, but then things really start to open up.

You unlock one of the four large areas of the USA and have three different types of hunts available. One of which is an OPEN hunt. That's right. Open world hunting on a very generously sized map (one of the available 4 to begin with). You complete all of the PRO hunts (one of the other types) to unlock the other areas of the USA.

You earn gear credits by hunting and there is a great selection of weapons and equipment.

You can view your best trophies in a trophy viewing area with shot information etc.

Bullet time with exact information about your shot and where you hit the animal (vital hits, deflection off ribs, shoulder blades etc. etc.)

At least 10 different big game animals to hunt as well as many other smaller animals e.g. rabbits, wolves, foxes etc.

I've only played for about 30 minutes so far, but this is already proving to be a great game for the price.

Thank you Cabela for a great hunting experience this time round!

If you're thinkin' ,"I'm curious about this but all these games have sucked for such a long time.", you'd be right where I was. Well, it's surprizingly good. I've been having a lot of fun creepin around the woods, taking down these suckers. The graphics are the best I've seen in a hunting game, not including the cut scenes with the pro hunters.

Here's one experience I had.
I'm slowly creeping up on a bear, armed with a bow, as he's laid down in a clearing. (Keep in mind, I just bought the bow and this was the first bear I was going after.) From about 30 yards I take aim and draw back, carefully trying to judge where its heart is....I release. The shot goes into a slowmo x-ray cam like on Sniper Elite. The arrow pierces its skin, missing all of its vital organ and only breaks a rib.....uh oh. That sucker roars, gets up and charges! Back pedaling, I quicky and franticly aim at his chest and shoot another arrow. In the slowmo cam I watch it pass about 2 inches from his left side. Sh*t! This sucker's now about 20 yards from me at full charge. In a split second I think, "Ok. I'm goin' for his freakin brain." I draw back, aim and shoot as fast as I possibly could. The slowmo cam kicked in and I'm thinkin, "Ok. this is it. No more chances." The arrow pierces his skull and dead centers itself smack in the middle of his brain. In full charge, he crashes to the ground about 4 feet in front of me, dead. I proceed then to the bathroom.

If you like the genre, I absolutly recommend it. I'm havin' a hell of a lotta fun with it.

I have not played Cabela's games for quite a few years because they were garbage. Took a chance on this one and it is great. Awesome graphics, great gameplay, authentic difficulty is quite challenging. I usually don't write reviews but I think everybody who likes the game should openly support it. Cabela's has a lot to do in order to regain my trust and a lot of people out there as well. This is great first step.

Game PERMANENTLY crashes for many users after a certain play time. Activision knows but offers no fix. Do not support this.

I enjoyed this game while it was working properly. Unfortunately, the game stopped launching after a certain point. Many users, including myself, have posted in various forums requesting a fix, but the devs are either unaware or don't care. I can't recommend this game until the issue is fixed, unless you consider it a rental.

Best simulator hunting!

Nice graphics and animation, I like this game. But rather a detailed hunting simulator likely to appeal to hobbyist over the general gamer.

This game is really really fun and addicting, but i cant recommend this game for only one very big reason. at about the 30 hour mark of total playtime, EVERYONE and i mean EVERYONE complains that their game crashes and will not start back up regardless of what everyone has tried. the creators of the game, not cabelas but the actual software company was hired to help make dayz, so nobody has gotten any help from them about this serious problem. the next step would be to approach acti vision, but almost 3 months of people begging and getting no response.

on the other hand this game is amazing, way better than any of the previous hunting games, AI can get a bit derpy at times but its usually fine. aiming and holding your breathe is a bit confusing and often the weapons feel like the have never been zeroed in. this game is still very fun though, considering it has a lot of hunting tasks and challenges, it can become very addicting. i feel theres not enough weapons but i play alot of action games so who am i to say. one thing i like is how the anatomy of the animals are and how the game shows the bullet hitting certain vital areas (like sniper elite but with animals). there are quite a few ammo types which makes it feel like the player has a choice to customize their hunting loadout.

i would recommend but that 30 hour mark crash everyone gets is what bugs me

Don´t bother with this game, it stops working after 30 hours and the developer refuses to patch it.

I have actually replayed this game twice now and I must say it is SCARY how a cabela's game is actually good for once... No more arcade on rails shoot whatever action bulls**t here just pure slow waiting stalking and taking that perfect shot hunting... Open world hunting with 4 very large sized maps and it controls fairly well too. The animal variety is actually.... Okay... Not great and not bad its just an okay amount. This game takes into account of wind affecting your bullet as well as distance and the animals hide thickness. If you want a fairly fun hunting simulation game id highly suggest this game and I can only hope cabela's sees this games ratings and understands this is what we wanted and to improve upon this. Also everyone says they kept getting crashes and bugs but honestly I have never encountered a single glitch.... Maybe I was just lucky.

TL;DR: Most of all this game is relaxing, and you definitely don't have to be a real hunter to like it: Great if you enjoyed the hunting in Skyrim/other sandboxy games, but want something with a tad more focus. Or if you liked Duck Hunt, and decided to look for a modern hunting game. ;)

At its core the Sniper Elite type shooting is decent, I don't think a better hunting game has been made (as far as I'm aware, anyway).

  • playability is decent, game is tranquil
  • shot placement for humane kills is represented in the game and is scored
  • environment is lush and pretty - especially some of the woodland
  • animals are sometimes quite impressive: Nicely modelled and textured, some decent animation, they will check you out and generally respond in a believable way as you stalk. Sometimes a boar, bear etc. will even try to go for you.
  • animals can hear/smell you and will run, they will tire of calls if you over-use them
  • there are visual cues for animal sounds, so game doesn't require headphones
  • abstract representations of tracking, wind changes, foliage noise etc.
  • most graphic hunting stuff is omitted/done tastefully enough not to horrify non-hunting types, this game is playable for anyone
  • there's a decent balance of enjoyable gotta-catch-em-all progression with the ability to just do an open hunt when you feel like it
  • ballistics fine most of the time
  • range/windage/drop not explained to the new user BUT the game helpfully places a guide where the shot will land so they won't keep missing all the time

  • the biggest issue: the game has some config bugs that can erase your progress!
  • hunt timers are really short and you can't do anything to change this
  • there's a really fast regular spawn and quick turnaround on calling/stalking animals which is understandable for the average gamer, but it's a shame you can't alter this for people who want a 1:1 marathon
  • you can't turn off visual cues for audio, or flashing trace when tracking the animal
  • you can't turn off the shot placement helper and work it out yourself, which will get annoying
  • see last four points, this game desperately lacks a hardcore mode, or the ability to create your own hunts
  • selection of hunting tools is small although admittedly might be big enough for most: one bog standard example each of several rifle types, there is bow hunting with no crossbow (?!) but one recurve and one compound
  • ammunition is packaged in strangely small amounts, I mean really imagine driving out somewhere to hunt with 8 rounds and then going home

In Cabela's® Big Game Hunter® Pro Hunts, smell and game hunt you!

This game is so badly made, I would chock it up as a comedy than anything else. I normally regard hunting games as a simulation of real life... this is not simulation of real life, by far. Obviously the coders have no concept of real life hunting. This was a commercial, nothing else and well all payed for it. It's worth $5 at best. In this game, smell and wind is highly weighed against the hunter; unlike real life. In today's technology, scent sprays will work for days on end. In other words, the smell is never an issue unless you bring a woman.... no matter what women do, they always smell good. Well, when I go hunting on my own, a man, game comes to me or I jsut run into it ready to shoot. There should be a "leave stinky wife at home" option.

I guess this game was created for women by women because a ♥♥♥♥♥ made it. A hunting game with less than 10 guns, that's like a war game with only 3 guns available in the game... get with the program. Older games were a lot better made, they were simulations, not arcade games. If a game makes you "production hunting" then that's not hunting... that's poaching!! If you want a simulation of real life, it's definitely not this game.

Other Junk:
-There is a serious lack of gun selection - In reality there are thousands of guns to hose from.
-There is a serious lack of ammo types - Because it's tougher to kill a turkey than a quail.
-You never run out of ammo - Every time you end a hunt, you get re filled for free.
-You can only carry a minute amount of ammo - You can only carry 8 .30-06 - I normally have more in my pockets.
-When you get close to a hotspot, either the wind will change or the flock flees - Very unrealistic, this is programmed.
-This is more of an arcade game than a "invite friends over for an evening PC hunt"... Dissapointment is the latter.
-The graphics engine is terrible, bullets dissapear, you get no kill and lose points. WTF?? #BetaTesting
-This game gives you points on where your shot lands rather than on the animal you bring back... like real life.
-Animals hardly ever stop moving unless they're bedded and make sure you get one good shot per hunt.
-Lack of game calls, you can get two but there are a dozen of game types.
-When you start moving one direction, soon enough, wind will come back behind ya.
-You spend more time looking at the scent map than looking at game.
-If you hunt certain games like wild boar, stay in tree stands, if not, they'll kill you!!
-You can try to shoot your aggressor but they usually come from behind.
-I never played a hunting game where I was the prey of game and my own smell.

-This was a gift for the celebrities who are in the game because the game itself, is total junk. I wouldn't invite my friends over to play this, they'll ♥♥♥♥ing shoot me!!!

Other than that, it's a good time killer, if you get it for cheap, like 90% off then I would recommend it but I cannot in good conscience recommend this game... well, not to seasoned real life hunters. In other words, I'm both a nerd with a deep hunting background. Animals come to me, in this game, you have to run after it.

My biggest issue with this game is that, it's a beautiful game that wants to be good but it is programmed to suck.

Selfish developers, they don't get it anymore... back in the days, the lack of games meant you overplayed the ones you have so making a tough game to make gamers mad used to be a thing. Nowadays, there is an overabundance of games so if you make a game that no one wants to play then people won't buy from you anymore.

This is a commercial and you're paying for it.

I'll keep playing it from time to time but I don't recommend it.

I enjoyed this game quite a bit when I first downloaded it. The open world feeling and multiple critters to blast with various weapons was really fun. However, after I had gotten about 50% through the gameplay the game crashed and will not open. I have wiped it and reinstalled but the game still will not open. Until the devs fix this problem stay away from this waste of $30.
