Patch Notes 4.9.2014

With our biggest update yet came some bugs! Here are some fixes that were done with 4/9's update.

FIXES
  • Fixed an Exploit where prone players took no damage
  • Fixed lootable items that were not able to be looted
  • Fixed Exploits with item duplication and deletion when stacking
  • Changed vehicle spawns for territories to eliminate issues where too many vehicles would spawn
  • Fixed an exploit where persistent account level up rewards provided money on a fresh spawn allowing players to gain money
  • Fixed an Exploit where resetting your spawn or falling out of the map would award you additional skill level points with the proper account level reward unlocked.
  • Fixed Wasteland map spawns being too high cause players to take falling damage when spawning
  • Fixed several nutritional items and health items that had incorrect sizes
  • Fixed Courier Mission turn-in points in Museum Outpost
  • Fixed an issue causing Lakeside Safe Zone courier packages to spawn in Riverside Outpost
  • Fixed an issue where grenades were no longer damaging players

In an effort to help fight cheating and abusive players, we will be taking a community-based approach to fighting hacks! To start off, PoXyz (Admin) and myself will be helping monitor servers along with other server admins. Along with your help, we can make a big difference.


How to Help

Your best bet is to report hacking or abusive players immediately via the the player report form located here https://forums.playnether.com/forumdisplay.php?23-Player-Hack-Report-Form
We will have this open when we are monitoring servers.

What is important to share?

The server name, name of player, and reason for reporting are the most important pieces of information that will help us catch any abusive or cheating players. Sharing video or images will also help greatly especially when we are not online to jump on the server.

Guest Keys

Nether "Believer" and "Chosen" packages come with Guest Keys that you can award friends. After creating an account on www.playnether.com and linking your Steam account you will be able to see these keys on your playnether.com Account Profile page. You can award one to a friend by copying the corresponding URL link into an email. Once your friend activates the key and begins playing, they have a seventy-two hour window of real time in which to play without charge.

Nether is a first-person urban survival gaming experience unlike any other. Nether forces players to make quick life-saving decisions in an unforgiving environment. In this post-apocalyptic urban world, death is waiting around every corner, at the top of high-rise buildings, and in the grasp of powerful teleporting creatures known as Nethers. To navigate this high-tension environment, players must use skill and craft in order to obtain food, weapons, supplies, and other resources necessary to survive in a desolate and dangerous city. Players will need to choose whether or not to team up with others or go at it solo against the Nethers, other players, and unpredictable, treacherous world objectives. In the end, players must decide if they will Prey or Pray.

EDITEDIT: This review is based off of how Nether was on release (before January). I don't intend to revisit Nether. I did not enjoy my initial experience and (from what I can see) things have changed, but the game itself hasn't met anything I wanted it to. I recommend you look into various sources before you buy this game.

EDIT: In light of certain comments, let me make a few things clear:

- Yes, I realize this is Early Access. I say so at the very beginning. No, that does not mean a game that is -SELLING- is immune to criticism. Early Access or not, this is a product that people are capable of purchasing. Therefore, we are free to offer our take on whether or not we recommend it -- and I don't.

That being said, to everyone: Please, take my review with a grain of salt. Feel free to investigate anything I say on your own. Make your own conclusions.

- While it looks like my playtime is insufficient to make any judgments on the game, I can assure you the amount of time I spent was enough to confidently state the points I made.

- Given that this is Early Access, this review -MAY- change drastically, or even be removed if the points I had an issue with are fixed/addressed. I'm not here to nab popularity votes or some ♥♥♥♥, the only intention of this review is to warn people who are expecting more than this game can currently provide.

- My opinion might differ from yours. Simply pointing out it's an opinion doesn't negate ♥♥♥♥. It's entirely possible that you enjoy the game as is, and if you do, more power to you. However, that doesn't mean I am wrong to think otherwise, nor does it mean anyone who agrees is also wrong.

- If a recent patch fixes any of the issues and I haven't adjusted my review, please let me know in a comment. It is possible (and likely) that I am not aware yet.

Let me start out by saying that the game isn't bad. It's a great concept, and it looks pretty great. Further, the game is still in Beta, so don't view the game -too- harshly.

But it has a long way to go before it's worth buying.

1. Too much emphasis on PvP, to where ultimately the game feels like a chore to play. It's impossible to rally any sort of human cooperation a majority of the time, which while fine in a game like DayZ, is a serious flaw in a game like Nether (where safe areas have to be defended and survival typically is best in groups).

I'd suggest making two (or more) seperate teams/groups, of which the player has to choose from on character creation and cannot change unless they rejoin the server.

One is the "survivor" group, in which members of the group cannot hurt other members, and people inside gain exp boost (or some other form of incentive [maybe hunger slows down?]). The other group is the bandits, which is the free-for-all side of the game, offering no incentive beside being able to hunt whoever they want. The two groups should be easily distinguishable.

2. Safe areas are not safe. People often camp the entrance of a safe haven and shoot anyone approaching. The ideal solution is extending the area of safe havens and giving combat a cooldown (10seconds?) upon exit.

3. The level system feels pointless, as it resets after every death. It should be account bound, much like how gold-items are. Or removed. Either way, as it stands, there is no reason to level up.

4. Collision issues are everywhere. Crouching often gets you stuck on objects, especially while on a roof.

5. Name tags are displayed when you hover over another person, which is a real big issue when trying to hide/avoid other people. This feature should either be removed or it should be changed to only display in extremely close encounters.

These five issues, amongst numerous other glitches (gun delay, scenary bugs, etc), make the game not worthwhile yet. I hope to see these things changed very soon, so that it feels like playing the game is worthwhile.

Updated: For the sake of shortening the review, iv wiped out the old review and will start from scratch but ill attempt to hit the same main points i made overall. Again, this is beta, so please do not make comments about how my veiws are flawed because of that fact, im writing about the game as it stands now.

First off for those who dont know what this game is about, you play a survivor in the leftover remains of a huge city after the appocolipse, and your job is simply to survive in this harsh environment, and the dangers are everything from the monsters that now roam the city known as Nether to other survivors to your own hunger. It is a first person open world game with no specific storyline, just you choosing what you do at all points in time. There are a few things every player of this game will HAVE to deal with though, and ill get into that next.

Item spawns- As you can guess, searching for food and currency is a big part of the game, as starving to death is not a hard thing to do, and it seems since my last times playing that the item spawns have increased a lot, due to the addition of loot containers all over the map. Currently, they are bugged and will not open 90% of the time, but i think that will be fixed soon and when it is item scavenging doesnt seem like it will be the painfull process it once was, Ill update this section when the bug is fixed.

Enemy encounters- The Nether are scary looking creatures but unfortunatly for the most part, thats all they seem to be. Due to most guns making so much noise that using them summons far too many of the creatures to survive a fight, you are forced to use melee weapons most of the time (unless you have got your hands and some really tough guns with plenty of ammo, which depending on luck can take minutes, or not happen for days) and melee fights against these things often feel tedious and repetative, You do have to learn a different tactic for each creature, but fights all feel pretty set in stone, as in once you find a way to fight 1 type of Nether, your going to fight it that way forever because it will behave the exact same every time, due to it only having 2 attacks. They do drop items which makes you feel like there is a point to killing them, but often i find myself just trying to sneak around because i dont find the conflics entertaining enough to slow progress to my goal.

Community- They have added a new in game teaming system called tribes, and it does seem to have calmed the greifing down a bit, even encouraged teamwork. As my friend and I were playing we ran into other players out in the world from our same tribe and, dispite our better judgement we did not unload every bullet we had on them, and they didnt either (this was the first encounter iv EVER had with a stranger that went this way but for reviewing sake, i had to know how much the tribes had influenced players desire to kill on sight, even grief) but instead, they ran with us to the safezone and gave us many provisions, including health items, more bullets than id ever carried at once, and plenty of food. The good people in the community are defenatly some good caring people, but the other people we ran into instantly ruined the experience. This may not belong in this section but since its mostly a "team" objective, thats where im going to put it. There are now many king of the hill type buildings where you and your tribe members go and stand to capture for various bonuses to all the members of your tribe, and while my friend and I were trying this out, i seen 2 players sneaking around the side, so i warned my friend and he hid in a bulding and took aim on the one in back since he had the silenced gun, while i kept low to get the drop on the closer one, given i had a shotgun, and when we sprung our trap, we unloaded full clips into the 2, (who only seen me) and, not only did they not die or take damage but they responded not by shooting back, but by crouching a few times and leaving me as Nether bait (since my shotgun called a good 6 or 7 of them to me) and killing my friend in a single bullet. Thus introducing, hacking to Nether. The conclusion to this lengthy section is, the good in the community seems to have improved, but hackers, in a game where death means you lose pretty much everything you spent 1, 5, even 10 hours obtaining, is the lowest, most infuriating feeling you could experience in a game, and with no report system in place, i dont see the hackers being taken out anytime soon.

Game Settings- Its a very good looking game, graphics are nice, sound is good, and there are many tweaks you can make to make the game look and run at its best for your system. No complaints in this area.

Overall- In the time my friend and I played this game, we finally did admittedly have a great time, a long run from where i started when there was very little positive to say. They have made many changes that dont put players with less time to play at a severe disadvantage by adding trading with npcs and making more that 1 way to make money to buy those certain supplies you just cant seem to find, not to meantion the teamwork encouraged by the new tribe system. They doubled the map size, giving you a lot more to explore and added things to do other than griefing, which has all helped the game tremendously. The hacking is a SERIOUS problem though, in a game like gunZ 2, hacking means your 5 minute match is wrecked and sucks, and even that is enough to drive you crazy and make you hate the game, so hacking being in this game, where your not losing 5 minutes, but 5 hours, possibly more, just from running into someone who has cheated and cant take damage, can destroy everything that makes this game fun, as it instantly switched my mood from pretty much pure enjoyment to flat anger quite quickly, and i know many others would feel the same.(after all, why collect anything if nomatter how good your gear is, it cant hurt the people you run into and they can just butter knife you to death?) I will say though, if they find a way to eliminate the hacking and fix the looting bugs, i will switch my thumbs down to a thumbs up, because until that point, the game had improved a ton, and i enjoyed every minute of it. (i would suggest getting this game with a friend though, i dont see it being as fun alone, but thats a personal oppenion.)

Iv read theres a new mode where you play as a nether but i was unable to try it, so i appologise for my lack of feedback on that subject, perhaps i can change that soon, and if i can ill update it asap.

Nether is an amazing combination of spectacular post-apocalyptic survival, and very well put together First Person Combat. It does update rather often, so you need to be installing new things quite a bit, but honestly, the updates only make the game that much greater, so the updates are worth the wait.

This is a strict Multiplayer only game, so if you don't have good enough internet to play online, I don't recommend getting it just yet. Multiplayer is quite amazing in this game, and really gives the player a more intense experience when exploring and surviving the world, because now you aren't just fighting mutants, you are also fighting real time players around the world. You can either team up with friends, or be a lone wolf, the choice is completely up to you.

The graphics in this game are absolutely incredible, are give the game a whole new depth to surviving. The game features a full day to night system, moving water simulation, grass and tree movement, and actual structure movement in certain objects. The games graphics can be turned down if it is too much for a weaker computer, but if you have a beast computer, I definitely recommend playing this game in all it's glory, because it truly looks amazing.

The gameplay mechanics in this game are also quite cool, such as the combat, movement, and interactions with other things. First off, the combat system is very well made, and gives players the choice of certain weapons they'd like to use. More of a close combat fighter? go with a deadly hatchet or a baseball bat. Want to snipe from atop a building? Find a sniper rifle to pick off your enemies, the combat choice is all up to you. The movement in this game is very nice and fluent, and has just the right amount of bobbing and motion blur, just enough to feel real, and not enough to annoy you, so it's very well balanced and playable. Interactions with other things is a very cool thing in this game. Finding random objects such as a sowing kit is actually important, even though it doesn't sound like it. You can find and interact with so many different items in the game, and it really gives the player a bigger survival feeling, instead of just having no hunger or thirst.

Finally, the most important thing, this game is VERY fun. Games are not just about fancy guns and graphics, which this game has, it's about the fun in it. What's a game with no fun? I found myself staying up until three in the morning, running from monsters, and exploring the vast open world. There were many jump scare moments, and awesome fights. I realize that not everyone enjoys the same game, so that's why I'm about to put a conclusion of what kind of gamer would enjoy this game.

This game is meant for the people who enjoy exploring an open world, with not any objective except for surviving. It's a First Person Shooter, which means you are seeing from the perspective of a man's eyes. This game is scary in a lot of ways, and can scare people who are not good with jump scares, or very ugly and scary monsters. This game is also violent, and has killing of mutated monsters, who spray blood when hit, and die in a pool of blood like goo, and also the killing of other humans, who will fall over when dead, but only drop their items, and not lay in a pool of blood. This game is also Multiplayer only, at the moment, and requires that you are online at all times, possibly on a server with no people, or on a server loaded with people, so you will, most likely, be playing with strangers most of the time on this game.

I've had a lot of fun playing this game, and I hope a lot of other people will help support this game to help make it even better!

When I first bought this game I was scared that I had once again gave my money to an under experienced developer team but that changed quickly. The team over at Phosphor Games has got some great talent and I was actually amazed to see such great scenery, graphics textures, and lighting as soon as I entered a server. Altho the game is still in an "Early Access" state, It feels solid and runs great. The survival aspect has greatly been captured along with the feeling of being in a apocalyptic world. Almost every building or structure can be entered and searched for food, water, and weapons to help you survive against the dangers lurking around every corner. With the world being so vast with buildings to explore, it can become quite exhausting looting at times.
The alien creatures know as The Nether were designed fantastically. They are somewhat difficult to fight and kill at first but once you get the hang of it, it becomes much easier. Altho you do not want to find yourself up against more than 2 or 3 them at a time as that can result in a very quick death with how much they teleport around you and even spit at you to block your vision. Stealth is definitely the way to go in this game. I found avoiding them completely made the game alot easier, especially at night time.
As for the PvP in this game. I've only come across a few people and most were easy to kill if I had a gun of some sort. You do sometimes get your lone range camper who's window shopping the hotspots for guns waiting for someone to come walking by so they can get a cheap kill, just like you would any survival game though so watch your back entering military zones and popular spawn areas. The whole game is played in a first person view and I really hope it stays this way. I personally think 3rd person has ruined alot of other survival games with PvP combat in them. Aiming down the sights in this game may come off a bit different than other games giving that it has that "Real" feel to it. You will have to make up for gun sway and your stance you are in. Also as of now there are no hit markers to confirm to you that you have actually hit the person you have just shot at. You will have to have a good aim and patience to get the kills here. Unless of course its just some lvl 1 guy that spawned in with a kitchen knife right in front of you.
Overall I highly recommend this game right now. It is one of my most played and most enjoyed. The developers also seem to have a great bond with the community about the game.

For starters, most of the negative reviews I'm seeing were published around November 25th. Since then, there have been multiple improvements to the game. Keep this in mind when seeing negative reviews.

Technical Side: While the servers have issues sometimes (Steam account syncing to initially get your account working can be hit or miss), the game is technically well performing even in its current state. Once in the game, very few performance drops (if any), and it looks quite nice. Plays well with a gamepad AND with mouse+keyboard.

First impressions (Alpha): In a relatively original twist, we have a post-apocalypse survive-em-up that doesn't use zombies. Now we've got mysterious inter-dimensional demons that can teleport small distances and are quite scary. People run around looting things and typically shooting at you, if you pose a threat to them (or they're in a bad mood). You survive by getting food, killing things that will otherwise kill you, and looting stuff to sell so you can buy more stuff. Missions can pop up where a package needs to get delivered or a safe-zone needs some machines activated within an hour before it gets overrun or just a sudden surge of beasties to kill. You can climb up a building and hang-glide down over it while monsters chase after you, sit on a rooftop and shoot everything that moves (lots of verticality in the buildings), try to make friends with people, lone wolf it and use the subways to move around the town, etc. Very promising and even in its current state, recommendable if you like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series or DayZ but don't want to wander around large, open plains and prefer a city that looks like New York in 'I Am Legend'.

UPDATE!: Recently, there have been some updates. You can now play as a Nether for short periods when purchasing an item from the vendors, you join tribes (which take over capture points to give you bonuses), the map has been doubled (like, x2) in size and the new area is full of capture points for the tribes to war over, etc. Lots of interesting improvements and it should keep adding on.
