I have just completed the game twice and currently I'm going for the A ending. This game is incredible. It might be a bit discouraging because the difficulty tends to ramp up quickly. Especially the first and second world are good examples of this. But as challenging the game is, it is even more rewarding.

I love the feeling of flawlessly beating a boss which at first I couldn't even reach without dying 50 times. That's the beauty of the game. It rewards you by showing how you slowly got better. There's little to no randomness or luck to the game. Every single time you get hit it's your own fault, and if you manage to overcome a situation without getting hit, it's all thanks to you: the player.

As you progress farther and farther in the game the areas you already cleared before become a breeze and you can easily jump, roll and slash through hordes of enemies that you used to have trouble with. I never felt a situation or enemy was particularly unfair. Got hit by an arrow? Duck faster next time! Fell into a pit? Time your jumps better! Like I explained before, the hazards in every world won't change, your skill will. Greatly.

If anyone who reads this is having a hard time completing the game, or heck, even the first world. I'll tell them: Keep going! it is definitely worth it.

In short, this game is a challenge. It's not impossibly hard, but it doesn't hold your hand at all.
The only thing that I find negative about this game, is how much of a difficulty curve it is to get the controls down. It can be really frustrating to be confused as to how to do things, but once you do figure it out, it's only uphill.
Music? Calm, but alright, and it certainly achieves a tone where you won't get ♥♥♥♥ed off but you'll definitely feel like a wimp once it stops from you dying.
Graphics! Yes! I love the aesthetic! Very nicely animated, nothing feels too out of place and things that SHOULD pop out, DO pop out! (although it was a bit frustrating when a few things blended into the background but were hazards)
Gameplay/Game Design! THIS is where the game shines, Every level starts off with overwhelming information and danger, both of which you'll slowly learn over the course of your hundreds of deaths on each stage. After finally crafting a careful strategy as to how to get to the end of the level, you reach the bosses. At first they're not too hard, specially when you get their pattern down, but I can definitely not say the same about the later ones. These will test how quickly you can learn and adapt, because if you ♥♥♥♥ up now, it's allllllll the way back.
Again, a GREAT challenge, where knowledge and skill are both HEAVILY needed. Then there's different endings, but screw those amirite.
9/10: Fantastic, but VERY little away from being perfect. Give it a shot if you're into the Souls series style of things.

This is a fun little throw-back to 16 bit games that were hard-as-nails and required you to memorize enemy patterns to win. Volgarr the Viking succeeds well at this and there are many speedruns on YouTube that are fun to watch. Unfortunatley this is not necessarily my kind of game though - there is little thought to winning. It is just pure memorization.

It can be a bit frustrating at times. I hate choosing whether to recommend or not for this particular title, because it is up to your preferences, really. Just know that you are not getting anything fresh here. It is a good reimagining of old-school side scrolling action games.

Very very very challenging and enjoyable. It drove me crazy sometimes and I wanted to throw my controller against the wall many many times. But I think this is good. Just buy and have fun (and a lot of anger).

This game makes me feel like a complete idiot, but only because it pretty much tells me, "Well, idiot, you shouldn't have jumped into the spike pit. Do it right next time."

I love it.

Finally getting to the boss of the first world is exhilarating--also heartbreaking, in my case, since I died against him almost immediately--because this game refuses to pull its punches. Take your licks and die, die, die. You'll get to a checkpoint eventually.

It's got a fair difficulty, but the jumping is terrible. It's castlevania-style, which means you have to be moving already in order to jump forwards or backwards and even then you can't control it.

Challenging, punishing, but extremely satisfying platformer. Some challenges seems like trial and error type, but i'd say they just require a little brain activity, more like a puzzle really. Also it's kind of fun to replay levels you've already beat and it seems good-for-speed-run kind of game.

Great Game!!! This is a hard game that is really rewarding, defeating bosses give you a great high! Lots of different enemies that keeps the game interesting. The boss fights are extremely intense with the fear of dying and having to start the stage all over again, so keep you fighting for every last moment! You really feel like david versus goliath. Blocking missiles and attacks, shooting down enemies, using you spears to find ways to avoid attacks. Looking for a challenge that is fun but won't give you mercy? this is for you but for those who rq after a few deaths

Insanely good 2D HacknJump fest.

If you don't know what that is, it'll probably be just average entertainment for you.

To the connoisseur: Volgarr is a perfect blend of Rastan 1 and Actraiser 2.
It's also just as hard!
Maybe even harder: the game makes me wish I'd be 16 again - how is an adult gamer supposed to reach all these secret levels, requiring near-perfect play?

Mighty Odin declares:
4,5/out of 5 sexy Valkyries shall accompany Volgarr to the eternal Party in Lanhalla.
EXCELLENT!
