Update #12: Blood magic!

Blood Magic, Blood Drum, Boots of Pain, and more!:

- Added a bit more variability to the initial setups of all of the boss battles
- Added an option to allow the display of ‘hints’ when standing next to items
- Made it so that you can cast spells even before they’ve cooled down. This “Blood Magic” just costs you some health.
- Made it so you only attack crates/barrels/urns if you’re adjacent to them (regardless of what weapon you have)
- Added ‘Blood Drum’ item and ‘Boots of Pain’ that do damage to enemies you walk towards
- Fixed some Death Metal bugs and also made it so you can’t double bomb him before he teleports
- Made Teh Urn also give out a spell and some food, in addition to the powerful item it previously gave out
- Made Ring of Mana cut cooldown delay by 1/4 rather than 1/2 and cause all spells to have more powerful effects
- Fixed a few Bard bugs, including the bug where Bard took no damage on hot coals
- Fixed some longstanding input bugs that prevented exiting the game and navigating menus
- Fixed issue where enemies could fall down trapdoors and not let other enemies fall
- Fixed issue where player could drop a monkey down a trapdoor and avoid it
- Fixed issue where Bard could move quickly onto and off a trap without triggering it
- Made barrels and crates have something inside them slightly more often
- Made it so Teh Urn can be opened by hitting it with a weapon and dealing 5 or more damage, instead of 9
- Made crates/barrels say “EMPTY CRATE” or “EMPTY BARREL” when opened and empty
- Made Blood Shops have slightly better items
- Made transmogrifier NPC cost 1/2 as much

if you like rhythm games (remember those?) - get this game
if you like both genres - get this game

the music is wonderful, it allows you to use your own music on your PC and has recently added steam workshop support.

also, it has a daily challenge mode, which is always appreciated.

I was almost instantly intrigued by Crypt of the NecroDancer. It’s a roguelike that’s played to the rhythm of whatever song is currently playing in the level. Being a fan of dungeon crawlers in general, this rather ingenious spin on the genre got me interested. On the bottom of the screen is a heart with animated bars getting closer and closer. It’s like a simpler Guitar Hero; jump to the beat of the heart to keep your coin multiplier from depleting. If you’re attacked, you’ll lost the multiplier. Aside from things trying to kill you, traps in the environment will also try to ruin this multiplier. If you fall in a puddle your multiplier will be lost. Spike traps will injure you, trapdoors will send you to different areas in the level, sometimes surrounded by monsters, other times you are greeted by a singing merchant who will sell you armor, food to heal, weapons, anything useful. You’ll earn money by killing monsters such as skeletons, bats, ghosts, even monkeys.

You start every playthrough with a dagger, shovel, and a bomb. Chests will drop larger blades, crossbows, armor, and more items once you’ve unlocked them with diamonds. Diamonds are scattered throughout the map, sometimes hidden in walls that can be dug up using a shovel. Items found in chests can also be purchased from the aforementioned singing merchant.

Levels are divided into four zones. At the end of every zone, there will be a mini-boss (often a dragon) that needs to be killed in order for the stairs to the next level to unlock. However, if you wait around in a level for too long, the song that’s playing will end and you’ll be dropped to the next level. This is similar to the ghost that is sent after you in Spelunky when you’ve spent a long time in one level. Or like the music that’s used to cut actors off during their acceptance speeches when they’re boring. Whatever floats your boat. I mean, the game allows you to use your own MP3 files, so you could totally kill monsters to the Oscars’ “get off the stage” music.

Characters can sometimes be found locked in cages. If you haven’t found the key in a chest prior, there’s a good chance the merchant will have one on sale. Once these characters are unlocked, a new room will unlock in the lobby. These rooms contain practice courses and shops. You can use the diamonds you collected in your last playthrough to purchase upgrades and new items that will show up in chests. Also in the lobby is where you’ll find the entrances to zones, different game modes like Hardcore or an easier mode with fewer enemies, local co-op, character select, and more. Unlockable characters carry different abilities, such as Bard, who can move freely and not to the rhythm of a song. He’s a great character to use to take a break from the rhythm-based combat of Cadence, the story’s frontliner. Though there isn’t much of a story; it’s all set up in the opening cutscene, featuring Cadence falling into a dungeon and being taken over by the NecroDancer. Which would explain why she’s tasked to move to the beat of a song.
The Verdict

There isn’t much I could dislike about this game. I would totally understand your feelings if you dislike dungeon crawlers; it’s a love it or hate it situation. Crypt of the NecroDancer is available now for $14.99 on Steam. It can be played with a controller, keyboard, and even a DDR pad. If you dislike the genre, it’s likely you’ll dislike this rhythmic take on it. If you’re like me and enjoy roguelikes that put your persistence to the test, chances are you’ll enjoy it, maybe even love it. Hell I’m already addicted.

Crypt Of The NecroDancer is my ultimately favorite rogue-like. You have to move to the beat while killing various enemies which can be very hard. If you make one stupid mistake, then you are screwed. The good thing is, ALL the deaths are YOUR fault-I still haven't had any crashes whatsoever. This game is infinitely replayable, with daily challenges and hardcore mode. This game does NOT hold your hand, you will be fighting and fighting for days to complete just zone 1. There is basically no tutorial but to figure out the patterns of the enemies you can unlock the ( I don't remember who he is called ). I rate this game 8/8 because it's great

I've been holding off on getting this game, because of the Early Access issues.
But it was on my wishlist and a friend gifted it to me.
I'm very glad they did!

I've sunk... just over 7 hours into it the last couple of days. I'm not great at rhythm, but it is very forgiving (don't spam directions and you will be fine).
All you need is the arrow keys, I don't think I've used anything else (well, WASD for multiplayer).

the music is great, the sprites are cute and easy to differentiate. Each enemy has a different pattern you have to learn. RNG dungeons, with Rogue-like difficulty. You find/buy different hardware in the dungeons, but those reset; note there are some permabuffs you can buy outside of the dungeon with gems. No microtransaction busslhit though, those are all bought with stuff found in-game.

Multiple characters to use with different attributes (one you don't need to have a beat to use), daily challenge, hardcore run mode... lots of stuff to do. I keep replaying the first three dungeon types (because I can't beat the third one, derp!).

Anyways... yes. This game is in a good state, most other devs would have officially released it by now.

Hours and hours of fun. You can jump on for half an hour finish a run and then leave it again. Not even finished yet and already so good. The soundtrack is great and controls simple and easy to understand. Your doing yourself a favour by buying th game

First off, I have to admit, I fell in love with the opening sequence. It's the perfect blend of music, plot, voice acting and a beat to get me hyped all the hell when I start it up. DROP DEAD!

The game is really enjoyable. It's a Roguelike, but it feels less dependent on luck, and more on skill and planning then most others. I don't generally feel like I was screwed too hard when I die; As far as I can see it, you should be able to clear the game without getting hit, or at least close, if you're god-like at pattern recognition.

Every enemy has it's own pattern, which, I can't believe the game didn't refer to as it's unique Dance. Maybe it's too corny. As Cadence (oh, there's the corniness. Works, though.) remarks, 'learn that, and they'll never harm you.' (something like that.)

I think the one negative I've had in dealing with the game is in using items and spells. It's not impossible, but it takes a good deal getting used to. You only have 4 keys, the 4 directions. To use items, you combine them. Ex, an apple is Up+Left, or whatnot. Keeping your combo going while using them very rarely works out for me in the heat of a battle.

But, even then, you can bind those combinations to other keys, if you like. Up+Left could be bound to Ctrl, or Shift, or Left trigger.

Yes, it works with gamepads. Personally, I bound XBAY and the Dpad to all directions applicable. If your one hand gets tired, switch to the other! Or, if you have a Left+Right item, it works well using both hands, I find, so it's Left+B instead.

Aaaaanyway. Graphics are fine. Gameplay is fun (first level's tempo is a liiitle slow for my taste), and the feeling on beating a boss is rewarding. King Conga and his Zombie Conga Lines (yes) confused the hell out of me the first time, but when you learn it, it's just plain fun.

In short, I love installing large screen televisions in doghouses, and Crypt of the NecroDancer is a good game.

Do not be fooled or alarmed by the Early-Access tag. This game is worth getting as it is. The developers dish out updates constantly, even if it's just a little bug fix.

Crypt of the NecroDancer combines Rogue-Like Elements with Rythm-Based gameplay to make up for one hell of a game. It's an 'easy to learn, hard to master' type of game that promises many hours of entertainment. The game consists as of this moment of 3 Zones (with 3 floors or levels each), a Hardcore Mode (in which you have to beat all 3 zones in a row), a Level Editor, 5 playable characters (each of which has a different trait!) and even a Steam-Workshop for User-Created content. The music is simply amazing (as expected of Danny B.). And the best part: You can play to your own music!

Like in every good Rogue-Like game, every run is randomized, but thanks to the way the game is played, even a hardcore run can be completed with the most basic equipment if you have enough practice. A run usually doesn't take that long, so it's good for a bit of fun in between as much as it is to play the game to death. Just give your brain a moment of rest from time to time.

Crypt of the NeroDancer is a very well executed game. The genre is a mix between rhythm and a dungeon crawler in which leaves the game with a new feeling I've never experienced. There is a lot to learn and a lot experience due to the random generation system that it features. The game is another one of those games where you must learn the tricks and rules that the game has laid out for you. Cause of this you feel like it is your fault when you make a mistake, and you will learn from them constantly. Crypt of the NecroDancer features one of the best OSTs I have ever heard, the rhythm and styles of the songs are varied (Note you can also add your own music. This system works quite well I found and it picks up the beat well.) . There are many unlocks (Items, spells, character upgrades, etc.) for it being in an early stage such as it is. This allows for variety in the way you dance your way through dungeons. This game also features unlockable characters that have their own gimmicks which change gameplay. I personally found myself playing as the main protagonist the most, but it is nice to have the option. Another feature in which I like is the ability to face against different mobs and bosses in a controlled environment. This will allow you to learn their patterns and figure out what works best against them. Recently added is the level editor in which allows a player to construct massive complex dungeons. Either that or try out different weapons and scenarios. Overall Crypt of the NecroDancer is a fantastic game in which will more than likely produce more than enough fun and frustration. I'd give this game a 9/10

I love this game.
This game is giving you so many possibilities to play and explore the dungeons with many different characters.
The developers are updating this game frequently and you can make or download custom dungeons or mods!
This game is also really unforgiving, but you get rewarded with the diamonds you find in the normal mode anyway.
I would recommend this game to everyone which likes cool, roguelike games.
(And please make more mods for the bard. He is the best character and the only character I can play ;~;)

Holy ♥♥♥♥ this game is soooo good 10/10 at first I saw this game about a week ago and thought it was another sorry excuse for a game useing the pixel style as a crutch like all rouges and indies do today, but after hearing so much about it by my friends I decided to take a chance and wow THE BEST MUSIC, my favorite being the Conga line boss with Danceing tiny zombies .

+It's in early access but you should probably get it, does an excellent job at combining the rythm / dungeon crawler / roguelike genres.

+The game isnt easy and requires some practice and time investment to beat all the zones (learning monsters patterns, items, shrines) but all in all its a very rewarding process.

+Has Steam Workshop support and a lot of interesting items / equipment you'll have to learn. Also they do daily challenges and the devs donate some money to charities and top players.

+Gets you humming to its great OST and moving to the beat



Things I would improve

-Some improvements to the custom music-to-beats process, using your own songs doesn't always work as expected

-Adding some kind of end-game content (After beating zone 3 you are like "what do I do now"). Yes, you have hardcore mode, but I would add some minor and faster reachable achievements / milestones. Like "kill X red ragons" , "kill 3 enemies with a bomb", "kill Conga King with a glass shard". Maybe even add some more hidden collectibles or trophys which can be viewed in a room in the lobby.

-Cloud save would be a nice feature, also multiplayer in the future would be something nice but it's ok as it is, I know it would be too much trouble.

Excellent mix of rhythm and roguelike genre. Extremely fair, you will rarely fail a run due to RNG. You made a mistake everytime you take damage. Not to mention the great soundtrack to go along with it.

11/10, slaughtered by a mushroom.

One of the best indie games I've played in 2014. The music is absolutely addictive, the game (although IMO it has a really high difficulty curve) is fun and head-boppingly good, and the patches for Early Access are released fairly frequently. If you're into rhythm games, I'd definitely recommend.

Insta-added to favorites. This one's going to take a while to master.

Crazy good game mechanics.
Masterful Chiptune / EBM music.

This has got to be the best retro styled game to come out since Megaman 10.

Do yourself a favor and don't watch a daily score attack replay from a high-score player. You will weep at how much you need to learn about this game.
