A very unique gameplay experience that mashes up a rogue like dungeon crawler with a music beats game. The soundtrack is amazing!! You'll want to hang out in the shopkeepers room, just to listen to him sing!

I really have mixed opinions for this game. On one hand, a rogue-like rythm game is unique and i like any videogame using music in its favor. On the other hand, is a very difficult game to master, as you have to keep the beats while also memorizing the map and enemy behavior. It can take you a very long while until you actually make progress, but on the bright side is one of the few generous games of the genre as you dont need to beat the whole game in a single run.

If anything it can feel kinda tedious to "dance" the same songs and make you impatient for progress, which not sure if is part of the game's design or a problem when you have to run the same areas several times. You'll want to collect some items and run to the exit, but you are trapped to the music's pacing to do so and take you a while depending of the map (or unless you're playing the bard).

Is a weird game that on the least you should try for a day or two. As once you learn the basics you'll see its appeal yet also some of its problems.

Awesome game, awesome music, awesome sprites and original mechanics, I've enjoyed it quite a lot so far. Lots of items to unlock as well as npc to rescue :)

You can play with different characters each one with a peculiar difference and some with their own version of the soundtrack. In the end it's very addicting.

After playing it I found myself scrolling a webpage up and down following the rhytm without noticing it :D

You can't really compare Crypt of the Necrodancer with any other games considering it's the only rhythm-based rogue-like dungeon crawler as far as I know. If that sounds appealing you should give it a try, I know I enjoyed it even though I've never played a rhythm-based game before.

Great game.

As everyone says, the game concept is original and the music is awesome, but that's it.
I've really tried to be patient with this game. A lot. But the difficulty is stupidly random and the fact that even if you unlock the other leves, you start with basic gear UNLESS you have unlocked the gem guy where you have to PAY HIM every time for some random stuff, and it's not garanted that it would be useful. Sometimes monsters hits you even if you dodge them according to the beat and even if you have done the regolations at the beginning. The only weapons that are useful are those who allows you to attack from distance and/or blood weapons that allows you to heal a half heart every 10 kills. Armor doesn't always works since even if you have armor value of 4 sometimes monsters just intakills you for reasons, even if they should do 1/2 damage. I can say that i've played many roguelike, and dying is part of the game, but as i said, you can start level 4 where monsters deals a lot of damage with the dagger and a shovel.
And then you have acces to the bard where you can litterally move as you like and don't mind the rythm of the music (but the monsters move after you) so it' basically the anti-game since you do the opposite of it would supposed to do.

Holy ♥♥♥♥, this game kicks ♥♥♥ all over my backyard.

I'm so engaged and pumped up to the maximum. The music keeps coming at me. Combat is a blast, easily some of the most fun ♥♥♥♥ I've ever seen in either a dungeon crawler or rougelike. I keep kickin ♥♥♥ and havin a blast.

Unlike most rougelikes you aren't set back alll the way to the beginning when you (inevitably, frequently) die. This game and it's rock solid soundtrack are like sweet nectar to my body.

Watched the trailer and thought to myself - another weird mashup? That combination would never work.

Oh, how wrong it was. Music game and roguelike got melted in a really crafty way here. I spent a lot of time playing Adom and DCSS - and CotN, while not as complex, rankes high up near those two. The music-enforced turn time limit adds a new challenge to the genre creating a really enjoyable experience.

(Don't believe the minimum VRAM for this game, it sure plays nicely in my integrated 4250, with only 256... Heck, it even runs on a 32MB integrated 945GM as a minimum reference point, choppy but playable still...)

I surely can't describe how much fun I've got from this game, even to an addicting level. I barely ever find anything fun anymore, just for comparing how much it is good as it is original.

The only downside I find for this is that there is only 4 sets of 3 levels each for the entire game, but the map generator makes sure it stays fresh.

Awesome soundtrack, challenging levels, great design, no bugs so far. Roguelike game which has an added gameplay element attached to it: you have to move, attack and destroy with the rythm of the music. And not only that, every foe you may encounter, every trap, every dungeon level has its own rythm as well. The learning process is fairly simple: trial and error, till you get to know how to act to counter that rythm. It's so much fun, and challenges the player in a way many would enjoy, that you could even compare to Dark Souls. The feeling of accomplishment when you finish a level, is indescribable. 100% recomend it, and at this price (currently on sale at less than 5€) you don't have to think twice.

Crypt of the NecroDancer

Oh boy where do I begin?
The gameplay is so Unique and Intelligent which is why it's one of my favorite games on Steam! EVER!

It's a Rouge-like game that combines Rhythm and Dungeon Crawling, 2 completely different genres! And it works perfectly! How crazy is that!?
You play with the rhythm and make a move at every beat, whether it's walking, attacking, using items, mining (technically it's shoveling 'cause you use a shovel but there is a pickaxe), etc.
As easy as this may sound, it is a really and I mean a really difficult game, every enemy feels unique because they all have a unique pattern to memorize, and the only way to beat it is to learn them and be able to predict when they move and where.
Still not convincied it's hard? Well try playing as one of the harder character such as Aria , ON A DANCEPAD (this is an official thing by the way, check their site for details)

The graphics are really neat too! It's really captures the "I'm underground" feeling really well, the sprites are so full of life, er well, they're kind of dead but they're still full of life, there are also Steam Workshop mods out there to change the sprites and sound effects to everything.

The music, oh God, Is it beautiful? Yes. Is it addicting? Yes. Is Freddie Merchantry the best thing ever? Absolutly. I can't get enough of the soundtrack, ESPECIALLY Freddie Merchantary's voice, but if you want to, you can change the music to whatever you have on your computer, but then you won't hear the game's awesome soundtrack or Freddie Merchantary's voice, so are you sure you want to do that? Also the voice acting is top tier just wanna point that out, Fantastic work.

Now if you look at the price tag and thought this was expensive well think again, because this game is going to stick with you for a long time, I usually move on from one game to another, but this is one of those games where I can't let go of because of how amazing it is.

I don't hear much people talk about this but there is a level editor if that's your thing, I'm not particularly good at making levels but I sure as heck can try.

In short, It's basically one of the most unique games I've played, sure you can say you played some unique games but I never saw anything quite like this, and while writing this review I couldn't really fully express how I feel about this game, it's so good that if it were a food, it's my favorite food that I can't get enough of. My brain created tactics automatically and is one of the only games where I get 100% focused on, Heck despite playing for (as of this review) 30 hours I can still screw up really badly. I'm currently having difficultly playing as Aria in Zone 3, and I love it.

I have high respect to everyone who worked on this game, it's a huge inspiration to game developers, musicians, and heck even the fans like myself, because I consider Crypt of the NecroDancer as one of the most innovative games of this generation and I'm sure many others do, so a big thank you to everyone who was involved with the creation of this game.

Also I just wanna point out that this game was inspired from another Rouge-like game called Spelunky, which is also another game that I love.

I think I'm gonna buy a Dancepad just for this game

  • Challenges on top of challenges on top of the challenging gameplay
Overall, an entertaining work of art.
