Has to be one of the most addicting games I have ever played. Not only is it addicting, its also pretty dificult but it's also very satisfying when you finally beat one of the zones. Also dont even get me started about the music, the music is just perfect and never gets old.

Great rhythm game. It is a little punishing as a death starts you back at scratch, but that's part of the appeal. It's a must buy if it's on sale and a "probably should buy" if not. Fun to just hop in for a couple of rounds here and there.

8/10 would recommend

I refrained for a while from buying this because it didn't convince me that much. I bought it when it was on sale and with about 2 hours played I must say I don't regret one bit buying this.

Following the rythm isn't as hard as I personally thought, although it can be sometimes difficult.
Each enemy has its own movement patterns, HP and damage they do to you. Fortunately there is a Trainer you can unlock where you can practice with every enemy individually in what I consider a very well done system.
The game overall is really fun to play. Very extense on content and secrets, and of course, very challenging. (Also, shoopkeeper singing the level song along the rythm is a plus).

Right now I can say I'm in love with this game, and I can't wait to get better at it and keep progressing.

I bought the game on Sale, went for the Collectors edition solely for the soundtracks.
Totally worth for the music alone.

On to the game!

This is a like a blend of The Binding of Issac and *insert music based game here*.
Being forced to keep the beat and make life or death decisions in time with the score is nerve racking to say the least but oh damn is it insanely fun.

For an impulse buy I'm looking forward to hours upon days of time dungeoning to the beats.

Fun. Not normally a fan of these kind of games but it was on sale and it looked interesting. Does seem to be taking a toll on my wrist though as I mash along in time to the beat but great in small doses.

This game is solid, and a lot of fun. Once you realize that moving to the rythm is critical and not staying calm is the reason you are getting killed (fighting those instinct to button mash those monsters to death), the game becomes very fun to play and has a very interesting difficulty curve.

Each new area spikes in difficulty temporarily as you adjust to the new enemy patterns and item mechanics, and adds a great deal of satisfaction to finally being able to beat it.

All of the soundtracks are great, and you can even add your own music easily through the in-game menu, but beware- the beat that the game recognizes for your own music can sometimes be very unnatural to your percieved rhythm of the song and make it very difficult to play. Test the beats in the lobby first before you venture out with your own songs.

5/5 for this game delivering what it promises.
6/5* if they added a metronome-style, hit-the-spacebar-to-the-tempo adjustment to custom songs.
Will definitely listen to this soundtrack when I drive around town again.

Crypt of the NecroDancer is a roguelite game based on the "bump to kill" mechanic. Games based on it (e.g. Desktop Dungeons) are usually turn-based, focusing on the strategy and effective enemy killing. But necrodancing is different, everything is done in microturns - All actions (both yours and enemies's) have to be correlating with the soundtrack's rhythm. Each beat is a single action for every character.

That makes the game pretty hard, especially in later levels - but it's definitely a pro for the game since I'm talking about roguelite game. This genre only deserves hard but fair difficulty. You have to deal with the press that requires you to feel the rhythm and remember specific dances of your enemies; you need to train proper dodges for each enemy and keep yourself concentrated (and if you don't, you'll can consider yourself dead in less than a minute).

As I already mentioned, all attacking is done just by moving to enemy's place in the grid (to "bump" them). If you do that at the beat the enemy's ready to fight, you lose your health instead and you have to quickly reconsider your (necro)dancing. There are many pickups through all levels, you can find both melee or ranged weapons, spells, armor pieces, or other passive and consumable items. There're also two resources: Gold, used to buy items for your current run, and diamonds, which are used to unlock more items for your runs (in the game's menu).

You might be scared about the controls for dancing, but they actually couldn't be more simple. All you need is arrow keys (or a dance pad), since you can only move in basic four directions on a grid. All spell casts and item uses are done by combinations of those keys, e.g. arrow up + arrow right to cast a fire spell.

All levels have procedurally generated groups of enemies and rooms, that's nothing unique for roguelites, but I am really happy for secrets in Crypt of the NecroDancer. In most roguelite games I've played, secrets were mostly placed somewhere in level's corners but this game does something completely different - secrets are always somewhere near the level's center, that means you don't have to explore borders in each level to get an advantage. On the other hand, secrets can have many deadly enemies and traps, you have to be wary. Also, you can dig through all walls in every level (besides the border blocks), making your own way through the level!

Talking about graphics, there's nothing to criticize. I love the precise pixelart design with sweet animation the game has! Since it's all about dancing, seeing every NPC to dance with the rhythm is truly satisfying. Soundtrack is amazingly well made, each level has its own song that has even more variations: There is a shopkeeper in every level, and when you'll be near him, you'll hear him sing to the current song. Also, there's a level that perfectly uses genre variations for a song - in hot parts full of lava you'll hear heavy metal, and in icy parts you'll hear electronic version of the same song. In the later levels (zone 4) the soundtrack isn't that good (for being more on the hard electronic genre, so it may be just my personal issue) and it's hard to move with the rhythm of the song properly. Considering everything about the game, I think it's rather another feature to bring the difficulty even higher near the end of the game.

Conclusion:
Crypt of the NecroDancer comes with an unique idea for a roguelike game; to change casual turn-based strategy into rhythm driven game. This change may seem small, but it makes the game distinct, harder and much more entertaining! The game also have a lot of replayability for all achievements (which are hard to unlock), so don't expect getting just few hours of gameplay from it if you want to get everything. Add great pixelart graphics and perfect soundtrack (mandatory for a rhythm game) and there's nothing to stop me from recommending it to you. It's great! Now let me go "necrodance" a bit more, I haven't got enough yet.

The controls are fairly simple, and the music is really QUITE fantastic. The game also has just enough challenge level to keep you coming back to keep trying to beat that one annoying floor, and rewarding enough to make you feel accomplished when you do! 10/10 would recommend.

This game gets better over time. Only wish there was just a little more content. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot to this game already, but a Wrath-of-the-Lamb like update or DLC with new weapon qualities, items and bosses would be SO awesome:necroheart:

Crypt is a game I admittedly bought pretty much exclusively for Danny B's soundtrack. The music in this game is fantastic. So much so that I bought the game for PS4 as well. But the gameplay is extremely difficult. It's randomly generated, but extremely based on enemy patterns. There's very little room for error, and each run can end in the blink of an eye. It's a game I really want to get better at, if only because it's so unique. If you put a bit of practice into learning each of the enemy's patterns, it is incredibly rewarding to beat each floor, especially for the first time. It's certainly not a game for everyone, but it's a game that you will enjoy if you spend a bit of time learning how to play it. And even if you suck, you can still enjoy Danny B's beautiful soundtrack.

What an amazing twist on a rogule-like game. The fun gameplay and pulsing beat keeps me from raging everytime I die. All the bosses are unique and there is what seems to be a pretty long playtime span for it. As of now it is a 8/10

I know, the trailer looks like colorful, musical chaos. After about an hour, however, it will all look so simple, you'll never miss a beat again, and you'll know that you could have beaten that level if you had only found a broadsword.

Excelent work! The Rhythm part isn't so precise as in Rhythm tengoku or similar games, but it does arise the need of thinking quickly, which makes it far better. With a total of 10 characters to play as, the game has a natural learning curve, which gets of the charts at the end!
The Music is excelent,Danny Baranowsky's music is groovy, so are the additional soundtracks from A_Rival and FamilyJules7x.
The Controls are as simple as it gets, meaning the dance-pad way of playing is not far fetched.
It's a game one might play only 30 minutes of, or try 5 hours to get through hit free
Either way, I heartly recommend this game to anyone who's a fan of rogue-like or disco-esque music.

Summer 2015 was Crypt of the NecroDancer for me. Summer 2015 was also really enjoyable for me. It's because Crypt of the NecroDancer was really enjoyable for me.
  • Amazing vivid art style
  • A great soundtrack
  • Interesting storyline
  • Innovative combat system
  • Challenging gameplay
  • Challenges on top of the challenging gameplay
  • Challenges on top of challenges on top of the challenging gameplay
Overall, an entertaining work of art.

Have you been wondering why people have low hours on this game? It's the challenging gameplay part. Be prepared to adapt and learn quickly from your mistakes and stay persistent.

This game is pretty fun for a while, until the novelty fades. But as some others have pointed out, it's not just really difficult, it's just flat out unfair at times. After countless deaths, and getting nowhere with certain characters (which you need to finish the game with to unlock others) such as the Monk that DIES when he touches gold, the game just becomes a frustration and it's obvious the insane difficulty is being used to pad the game which has quite a lack of content. There are only four levels (with four stages each) and if you are able to complete the game you can do so in about 30 minutes or less. Now, I could understand the Monk being harmed for touching gold, but dying just for touching it seems a bit ridiculous to me. Then there's Eli, who can kick bombs (of which he has an infinite supply). Sound badass? He's not. That's his only weapon and when you come across the enemies that push you around the map it's almost impossible to kill them without hurting yourself first. To make matters worse, instead of having several completely different sounding songs to play on each level, there are only a few (you need to turn them on by yourself) that are more like remixes. You have the option to add your own music to the game, but no random option for that. This has apparently been in the works for 2 years. Unless you have a lot of patience to lose over and over, playing for hours and accomplishing nothing, I wouldn't recommend this game. Once again, it was fun for a while, but I think I will quit before I break another keyboard.
