In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

What the developers have to say:

“So you've elected to support development of Viscera Cleanup Detail by getting the Early Access build, great! There are a few things to keep in mind however, as we continue development, fix bugs, add content and polish it all up.
  • It's still in development, so it has issues, especially regarding network.
  • You might want to think twice about buying this now if you're looking for a polished product. However, if you want to support us and provide feedback for the game's development, we'd be super grateful!
  • The price will increase as it gets closer to the finished game.
  • Everything is subject to change; your favourite feature could be eradicated.

As we proceed with development, the major improvements you will see will be relating to new and improved maps, bug fixes and polish. New content will primarily be focused on creating interesting environments for our players to experience.

And on a final note, mod support will be coming very soon! So you'll be able to craft your own space-station massacres; hooray!”

V0.39 live + Workshop support!

Hi everyone!

So, we managed to get some stuff done before our time off! This update brings with it a small new map, a few fixes, and the first stage of proper Workshop support!

We've got the tool in place now to allow players to upload their creations and share them on the Workshop. We need to do a few things behind the scenes and write up a basic guide, so we'll set that up as our last act of of the year tomorrow morning :)

The new map is a medium-lit, somewhat mucky refinery. It's quite small, so it should be a quick cleanup!

Changelog:

  • Added new Unrefinery level.
  • Fixed J-HARM extending into ceilings, now ensures safe distance for player.
  • Fixed J-HARM screens being a blinding white under bright lights.
  • Reduced the horrifyingly high opacity of Flare smoke particles.
  • Added Steam Workshop tool for cooking, uploading and general content handling.

And a reminder: after tomorrow, we'll be taking a few weeks off, so you probably won't be able to get a hold of us for a while. We'll be back funkier than ever when we return though!

Thanks everyone! And enjoy Christmas(or equivalent) and the new-year!
Happy mopping!

V0.385 Live; J-HARM fixes!

Attention, sanitation division.

We bring a fairly small update this week, mostly in the form of J-HARM related improvements.

Most of the horrible issues with it have been resolved, as you can see here.

  • -Fixed 2 Trunks appearing in the Office.
  • -Added the J-HARM to Caduceaus.
  • -Fixed J-HARM shaking violently when things are touching it.
  • -Fixed J-HARM not always retracting when it falls over.
  • -Improved J-HARM hold position.
  • -Increased J-HARM size, now high enough for Athena's Wrath window areas.
  • -Fixed J-HARM screen not using correct hand animation.
  • -Added Jam and Error captions to J-HARM screens.
  • -Fixed notes seeming stuck to the floor when lying face-down.

Unfortunately... we were not able to get Steam Workshop working in time, so that'll have to follow in another update. Hopefully in a couple days or so, if all goes well.

Otherwise this'll be our last major fixes and features update of the year, so I'll just wish you all a sanitary holiday, for 'tis the season to be mopping up some awful alien goop, at least that's what they tell me.

Keep those floors clear of eggnog!
You don't want to be fired by the Company right before Christmas.

“You know what I really love about violence? Dealing with the consequences! That’s why I’m so excited to see that Viscera Cleanup Detail, the space station janitor simulation, is now available on Steam Early Access.”
PCGamer

“By setting its mundane stall in the days after events that would be taken oh-so-seriously in another game, Viscera Cleanup Detail manages to be morbidly hilarious without ever telling a single joke.”
EuroGamer

About This Game

Disaster! An alien invasion and subsequent infestation have decimated this facility. Many lives were lost, the facility was ruined and the aliens were unstoppable. All hope was lost until one survivor found the courage to fight back and put the aliens in their place!
It was a long and horrific battle as the survivor duelled with all manner of terrifying life-forms and alien mutations, but our hero won out in the end and destroyed the alien menace! Humanity was saved!

Unfortunately, the alien infestation and the heroic efforts of the courageous survivors have left rather a mess throughout the facility. As the janitor, it is your duty to get this place cleaned up.
So grab your mop and roll up your sleeves, this is gonna be one messy job.
Today, you're on Viscera Cleanup Detail!

Key Features

  • Janitorial Simulation - Step into the boots of a space-station sanitation technician and deal with the horrific aftermath of a sci-fi horror event. Blood, viscera, spent cartridges, worker bodies and other messes litter the facilities.
  • Clean - It's your job to clean up the mess, so clean it up you shall! Use your trusty mop, gloves, dispenser machines, plasma laser and sniffer tool to help you get all that blood out of the floor and off the ceiling! You can even try and punch-out if you think you've done your job.
  • Sandbox Gameplay - Don't want to clean? Just want to make more of a mess and play around with the physics? Go ahead! You can save your game as well; that's kind of us!
  • Multiplayer - Note: MP is still being worked out and may have issues still.
You can even enlist some friends/coworkers to come and help you clean up (or make even more mess).

Important:

Buying Viscera Cleanup Detail also gets you our spin-off titles, 'VCD: Shadow Warrior' and 'Santa's Rampage' free!

You think your parents are disappoint when you waste your life playing video games now? Just wait until you see how disappointed they are when you waste your life playing a video game that simulates being a janitor, while sitting in a messy room in real life. Soul crushing disappointment...

Also, this game is obsessive compulsive crack. It's challenging if you approach it as a puzzle game and goofy fun if you approach it as a physics simulator. A lot of credit should given to the developer for the attention to detail they put into creating messes that look real and tell a story.

I haven't tried coop yet, but I'm guessing there's a lot of fun to be had there.

This game is a news flash for me, it just screams "HEY You remember those days back in the 90's of running around a 3d map shooting 2d sprites of nazi's, cults, Zombies, Demons and aliens? Well, time to clean your f**king mess you ♥♥♥♥♥!" And just slaps me in the face with well designs maps, a mop in my hands, and a little sniffer device.

This game is like your mother. Endearing, loving but down right damn unforgiving. You spilled a bucket? "TOUGH NIPPLES Clean it up and get another bucket!" The bin machine just dumped a few giblets down and stained the flooring with blood? "SUCK IT UP AND KEEP CLEANING! Not my fault the machine just trolled you!" A gib just goes haywire and the floor absorbs said gib and you cant get it to burn it? "Restart the bloody map and start all over!" <---(Fix this glitch please TwT) But at the end of the day, You can't hate it, Cause it is unique and feels nice to clean a map 100% and get a promotion from your advisor!

But seriously fix that glitch...

10/10 Would spill another blood filled bucket.

Well this is an odd one, it is a fun game but my god play it with friends or a podcast playing because you will go mad. I played a level for about 2 hours without even realising it, I just got into a routine and just played without even realising it.

One thing I will say is the physics are tempermental to say the least, put too many body parts and bullets into the biohazard bins and it will go crazy and half the bullets will fall out the bottom and the arms will flail everywhere and get blood all over your nice clean walls. Which brings me onto the water buckets, knocking a bloody water bucket over to see it spill over your nice clean floor is the most depressing thing that has happened to me.

On the whole, a good laugh and a new take on sci fi violence that makes you feel sorry for the cleaners in Gears of War

Simulatory Goodness!

Viscera Cleanup Detail is easily one of my most favorite titles of 2014. From a premise so insanely simple comes one of the most interesting, gloriously monotonous games I have ever had the fortune to play.

As a space-station janitor, your life is a thankless one. Wake up, go to work, come back, get shouted at by manager and go to sleep knowing that the day after will no doubt be exactly the same. So what makes this game so awesome to play?

This is a game for the people who want something to play, but don't want to work their mind too much... This is a game in which you can watch a TV show, listen to a podcast or some excellent music whilst you play. Many hours have been spent catching up on podcasts and cleaning away to my hearts content.

While it is indeed early access, that should by no means put any potential buyers off, as it is frequently updated with new maps, janitorial tools and in the near future, workshop support, meaning that a multitude of mods will no doubt arrive to spice up the game even further!

In summation, this is an early access game that does it right, in a sea of so many underwhelming titles. I would DEFINITELY recommend it.

Now what are you waiting for? Go grab a mop and get to work!

This is, probably, one of my favorite games ever. I'm a huge fan of games that question what it is to be a game- all the weird stuff on Kongregate, The Stanley Parable, anything that's every been called a "notgame"- and this fits the bill perfectly, but in a slightly less existential way. It's a perfect experience for someone who wants something new and inventive, but not particularly thought-provoking- and also absolutely hysterical.
My only complaint would be the occasionally bugged physics (my buckets have a habit of sinking into the floor and require quite a bit of mop violence to excavate) but this is a work in progress and I'm sure that'll be part of an update.
So, for an in-progress game pioneering in the realm of janitorial simulators (mixed with Dead Space, of course, because no game is complete without alien viscera), this... Whatever it is is /golden/. 10/10 would mop everything again.

VISCERA CLEANUP DETAIL
What can i say: this game is awesome even to anybody who hates cleaning at home would enjoy the task of cleaning up after playing VISCERA as it has an unusually satisfying motivating job well done feeling after cleaning a map and an atmosphere that is fun in single and multiplayer along with a wide variety of immersive highly interactive maps in all of it's creepy blood stained glory!
the DEVELOPERS at RUNESTORM are doing a fantastic job fixing bugs and delivering new updates/maps and new content so fast it's hard to clean fast enough to keep up:)

my money well spent as VISCERA CLEANUP DETAIL is an unusual very unique game and possibly one of the best simulation games i've had the honor to play!

VISCERA CLEANUP DETAIL has so much potential when steam workshop support is launched it is not funny!!! imagine the community mods and maps that would fit with this game eg: viscera goat? if the devs at coffee stain studio allowed it? or a first person shooter addon or even if a halo or dead space type map would be very interesting(would take a year to clean a halo map? then again instead of warthogs and flying ships would be some unusual cleaning vehicles as i could imagine driving around in some wacky garbage truck picking up hordes of dead aliens:)

what the devs are doing is great and they should continue doing what they are doing!!!

what i think needs to be added in a future update is an empty box/crate to put all of the unused flares in and a shelf(stacking area)for the unused TNT as these 2 items make a map look messy after one has cleaned a map!

more steam achievments: eg:collect all the data pda logs? collect all advertizing from the vender/bin and bucket machines??? collect the plasma welder from every map and throw it on a shelf in the office? force a j-harm into your office basement???
I did through 4 door frames using a hexagonal crate/nitrogen barrel and the shovel from the dig map as my janitor trunk i relocated to the office bathroom(I did this before before the devs made the j-harm bigger this week)
awwwww j-harm wont fit through office doors anymore so only collect 1 if ya want a j-harm in ya office as they won't fit in the garbage shute!!

a seperate small garbage shute room with a wall mounted garbage shute in the office as that trapdoor really get's in the way of the room with the toilet as it's hard to get to when it is open and i think the janitor trunk should be in the bathroom as this door is locked at the start of the game and being able to take stuff from within the levels would feel more rewarding after unlocking this door and be more right for this game!

need to fix bright portable lights as they make my screen flicker a little bit(could be an amd latest beta driver issue notsure)

need more npc's maybe a few surviving aliens from that sci fi shoot out that one could defend against with a mop! as it would be like being on a space ship from an aliens movie with something scary creeping around while one is cleaning their way through a map(aliens vs predator atmosphere and this game would be a bestseller)

add speech like in VISCERA SHADOW WARRIOR was kinda funny to hear what a janitor in a viscera situation would say while cleaning up etc. I think it would make viscera cleanup detail more enjoyable to play

keep up the good work RUNESTORM as this game will always be in my never delete/uninstall list!

a must have game in anyones steam library(although not recommended for young kids as they'd be horrified by what santa did to his workshop and never think of xmas the same again)

don't splill your friends bucket as they might get angry with you in multiplayer and it would come to a really cool mop fight:)

I bought viscera for $7something when it first appeared in early access and feel that i didn't pay enough money on steam to buy this game as it should cost at least $50 and i cant wait to see this game grow and turn into a masterpeice!(even in a worst case scenario if this game were to be canned/scraped the community and steam workshop would keep this game alive for years as it's possibillities are almost endless)

exellent work RUNESTORM 11/10 stars:)

this game is surprisingly calming considering it's a game about cleaning up blood and body parts and other unpleasantries. it's a good game to play while listening to a podcast or a mixtape because you don't need to fully concentrate on the game itself - i just wish there were more janitorial tools, like a vacuum or something for bullet shells and other small objects that get annoying to pick up on their own but since it's early access i hope the developers will add in something of that sort! overall i'm looking forward to how this game will change over time

I hate this game so much. It's unbearable! I can't stop cleaning up, and then when I get blown up by TNT i quit..I throw my mop down and tell my boss to go lubricate the end and shove it up his ♥♥♥....Yet three hours later I apologise to my boss and ask him for my job back, and I always take the cut in pay happily....Always humming a sweet song while filling up those biohazard containers. Always smiling when blood gets into my freakin hair...DAMN YOU VCD STOP SCREWING WITH MY OCD AND BEING ADDICTIVE! SERIOUSLY

I QUIT...NO MORE....I'M DONE....

.....

I'm so sorry please take me back I love you....

P.S. the only lil thing I have an issue with is the gameplay physics. You throw stuff in a biohazard container and suddenly tip said biohazard container over with a shell casing....That is one heavy shell casing o.o

Reviews and the Steam Sale convinced me to make this purchase. Took my time on my first level by spending 80 min instead of the estimated 45. Smooth gameplay, great atmosphere-- seemed like a simple task, just tedious. Looked around before punching out-- thought I did a decent job.

Threatened with termination. (I left a bucket behind which, somehow, killed someone.)

10/10, would curse at spilled buckets again.

Seriously. Buckets. Can you not.

Edit: Redid level adding 45 minutes and extreme Discovery Channel Blacklight Technology.
