In Viscera Cleanup Detail, you step into the boots of a space-station janitor tasked with cleaning up after various horrific sci-fi horror events. Instead of machineguns and plasma-rifles, your tools are a mop and bucket. That hero left a mess, and it's up to you to deal with the aftermath.

What the developers have to say:

“So you've elected to support development of Viscera Cleanup Detail by getting the Early Access build, great! There are a few things to keep in mind however, as we continue development, fix bugs, add content and polish it all up.
  • It's still in development, so it has issues, especially regarding network.
  • You might want to think twice about buying this now if you're looking for a polished product. However, if you want to support us and provide feedback for the game's development, we'd be super grateful!
  • The price will increase as it gets closer to the finished game.
  • Everything is subject to change; your favourite feature could be eradicated.

As we proceed with development, the major improvements you will see will be relating to new and improved maps, bug fixes and polish. New content will primarily be focused on creating interesting environments for our players to experience.

And on a final note, mod support will be coming very soon! So you'll be able to craft your own space-station massacres; hooray!”

Update v0.35: Paintenance

The next update is here; Paintenance

This update brings a couple fixes and improvements, a new map and a few early achievements. More will come as we go.
The new map, "Paintenance Tunnels", is a small/medium map set in an underwater sub-station's maintenance tunnels.

And, BIG OL' WARNING! Office save corruption is inevitable once again, as more changes were made to it's system.. :\

To the changelog!

  • Added new Paintenance level.
  • Greatly improved the Office 'trophy room'. [Save corruption unavoidable]
  • Possibly solved some Office issues of object duplication and other chaotic messes happening..
  • Made it so that only an exceptional cleaning job gets you an Employee of the Month photo and rating.
  • Added several basic achievements. [More to come]
  • Fixed janitor gibs not using character colors.
  • Fixed some save related issues.
  • Added a whole bunch of new hand anims for interaction, including palm scanners, lids, incinerator doors, etc.
  • Improved note handling, notes are now held upright in the hands.
  • Added an indication that you must press a key to progress past the game's black entry screen.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to finish the trading card assets, so those will follow in the week with any luck.

From v0.35 to v1.0: tentative roadmap

Greetings everyone!

So here is our tentative roadmap for VCD from v0.35 (coming Friday probably) to v1.0 (hopefully in January). This is very much subject to change!

  • General fixes [too many to list specifically]
  • General tweaks [adjustments that will make themselves apparent as we go]
  • Office tweaks and improvements that might be required

  • Robotics facility [fancy new map and environment with new things to deal with]
  • Paintenance [smaller map, theme shall remain secret for now!]
  • Zero-G - MAY NOT HAPPEN! [this will be a design and environment reworking of the Zero Gravity map]

  • J-HARM lift tool [for those hard to reach places!]
  • Broom tool [it'll make it easier to sweep objects together]
  • Artifact [muhaha!]
  • Lightning scars [fix with Plasma tool]
  • Radio [this depends very much on my ability to craft enough funky janitorial tunes!]
  • Foetus' for tanks [decorative]

  • General audio pass:
This will be an overall pass of VCD audio, where we'll add new sounds where lacking, or repeat too often across multiple objects (eg: all the crates). Expect a few dozen new ones.
  • Hand animations [add more animations for the hands as needed, such as opening and closing, switching things on and off, palm scanner, etc]

  • Trading cards
  • Achievements
  • Mod support / Steam Workshop
  • Mac support [this is not a guarantee! we are not yet certain if it's possible, but we will try our best!]
  • Launch/Release video

This is how this roadmap should go down over updates. This is by no means complete or definite however, rather a general guide. We will aim to get things in in that order, and as quick as we can.
Fixes and tweaks aren't listed here, as they will be spread widely across the whole lot as we go :)

v0.35 [potential]
Trading cards
New map [Paintenance]
Hand animations
First few Achievements

v0.36 [potential]
Audio pass
More Achievements

v0.37 [potential]
Lightning scars
More Achievements

v0.40 [potential]
Robot Facility
More Achievements

v1.00 [potential]
Mac build
Launch video

And there we have it for now! We'll keep on doing as much as we can and get through the updates as quickly as possible for ya'll :) The only long gap might be when we take a couple weeks off over Christmas, but we aim to have most of it all done by that point.

“You know what I really love about violence? Dealing with the consequences! That’s why I’m so excited to see that Viscera Cleanup Detail, the space station janitor simulation, is now available on Steam Early Access.”

“By setting its mundane stall in the days after events that would be taken oh-so-seriously in another game, Viscera Cleanup Detail manages to be morbidly hilarious without ever telling a single joke.”

About This Game

Disaster! An alien invasion and subsequent infestation have decimated this facility. Many lives were lost, the facility was ruined and the aliens were unstoppable. All hope was lost until one survivor found the courage to fight back and put the aliens in their place!
It was a long and horrific battle as the survivor duelled with all manner of terrifying life-forms and alien mutations, but our hero won out in the end and destroyed the alien menace! Humanity was saved!

Unfortunately, the alien infestation and the heroic efforts of the courageous survivors have left rather a mess throughout the facility. As the janitor, it is your duty to get this place cleaned up.
So grab your mop and roll up your sleeves, this is gonna be one messy job.
Today, you're on Viscera Cleanup Detail!

Key Features

  • Janitorial Simulation - Step into the boots of a space-station sanitation technician and deal with the horrific aftermath of a sci-fi horror event. Blood, viscera, spent cartridges, worker bodies and other messes litter the facilities.
  • Clean - It's your job to clean up the mess, so clean it up you shall! Use your trusty mop, gloves, dispenser machines, plasma laser and sniffer tool to help you get all that blood out of the floor and off the ceiling! You can even try and punch-out if you think you've done your job.
  • Sandbox Gameplay - Don't want to clean? Just want to make more of a mess and play around with the physics? Go ahead! You can save your game as well; that's kind of us!
  • Multiplayer - Note: MP is still being worked out and may have issues still.
You can even enlist some friends/coworkers to come and help you clean up (or make even more mess).

Buying Viscera Cleanup Detail also gets you our spin-off titles, 'VCD: Shadow Warrior' and 'Santa's Rampage' free! And if you already own Santa's Rampage on Steam, you get a discount on this game!

#1 - This game preys on people with OCD.

#2 - I didn't know I could jam 1.5 bodies into a bio hazard box, maybe more if they're in smaller chunks.

#3 - I now know what my mother went through when cleaning up our house while I was growing up.

#4 - This must be what experienced serial killers have to go through on a regular basis in order to get rid of evidence.

#5 - Over stuffed a bio hazard box with gibs, tried to take it to the incinerator but hit a wall, knocked almost everything out, fell on the floor, splattered blood and guts everywhere. Went to clean I up with my mop but it was dirty so I only smeared it around and made it worse. Went to go find my bucket only to realize I left a trail of bloody footprints down the hall and gave me three times more work to do.

5/5 - would burn body bags again.

Going into this game, you wonder: What is all the hype about, who would ever want to play a janitor simulator?

Let me put it this way. Have you ever thought about how fun it would be to mop up puddles of blood in real life, only to imagine just how gross that would be? It instantly turns you away.
But here. In this game. You get all the excitement of blood mopping without actually having to touch anything gross. It's amazing. It's everything I thought it would be. I can't stop, help.

A perfect reminder that behind every hero with a boomstick, there's someone close behind crying inside at the amount of gore on the roof for them to reach with a flimsy Mop.

10/10 would clean again

I cleaned off the blood, then threw every object/debris/limb (Including the buckets) into the incinerator.

There, made the whole place good as new. Who said Janitorial work wasn't so practical and fun?

Spent an hour and a half systematically cleaning and throwing away everything that dare step between me and my mop. Decide to complete the mission. Learn the barrels I've left behind, killed people.

10/10 Would kick bucket full of gibs again

Better than it looks! 9/11 Thumbs Up!

I bought this game b4 it was on steam, and it keeps getting better.

+gud grafix
+pretty funny
+cool atmosphere
+very relaxing, almost zenlike
+they give you little bits of the narrative through in game things, leaving the rest to your imagination
+moar replay value than u wud think

-Lots of bugs(early access)
-No workshop integration(YET!)
-could be better optimised(foliage ♥♥♥♥s my already ♥♥♥♥ty fps)
-no matchmaking(manual setup multiplayer is a hassle)
-cant play anytime(this is one of those games that you have to be specifically in the mood to play it in order to enjoy it)
-lots of content(i feel like they are putting more into new maps than actually working on gameplay impovements/fixes[I MAY BE WRONG])

I sit here and clean up with a friend while I SHOULD be cleaning my room. Would play again! ( and again!)
Other than the small issue of things going into walls/under floors and issues with joining a game, this game is awesome!
Remember that this is still early access so it can only get better! There will also be issues.

I recommend this to anyone who likes to relax and clean.. or get mad while cleaning! With the added save feature it makes it all the better to get and play!
You can even make the mess even more glorious!

Just remember to BURN IT ALL!

You could also punch it but that would just hurt your hand.

This game is lying about having multi-player support. At least not in the sense that you can actually play the game with a friend. Whilst you can connect and run around, the physics engine cannot deal with it and playing the game properly is impossible.

There are some bugs that are quite funny, such as buckets of bloody water falling over (spilling more bloody water for you to clean up!) or small debris not fitting in the huge incinerator due to awful collision detection. Once the novelty of the bugs wears off, you realise that the multi-player mode is an unplayable mess and you may as well disconnect because playing the game seriously online is impossible.

Recently (5 days ago as of this writing) the developer published the development plan for this game and improved multi-player is not planned at all. I did leave a comment querying this and I'll update/delete this if I get a response, but I want you to know that despite the game claiming to support multi-player, whilst that claim technically is correct, it's not playable in any serious fashion.

To the developer's credit (only slightly) the Steam description does mention "issues, especially with network" but that's literally all. Claiming proper multi-player support is a downright lie, particularly given the lack of any plans to fix the buggy mess.

(Disclaimer: I haven't actually played this for a couple of weeks so I don't know if the multi-player has been improved since I did.)

While it is an early-access game, it seems to me that a lot of hard work was put into this silly game. This is honestly a brilliant concept, being a space janitor cleaning up the viscera of humans and whatnot. Highly recommend it.

This game is one of the most original games ever made. Easy to just get on and play, without any storyline or cutscene ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Your job is simple:
Clean up body parts.
Clean up debris.
Mop the floor.
