Alpha 0.5.3 Now Live

We have been busy getting things working better and fixed up as per your feedback and suggestions and now we have another little update. We want to also thank you all for the feedback and great multiplayer game we have been playing with you guys.

Note: This update may reset Controls and video options. Hopefully this will be the last update to do this.

Changes:
  • Squad Command Menu has different options depending if aiming at Enemy or Squad Member
  • Added super basic Melee
  • Added Random Delay to when enemies throw grenades so not instant.
  • Show warning when trying to deploy in MP without recruit selected
  • show warning when trying to create server without name
  • Use Progress Bar shows above head when using objectives (planting C4 etc..)
  • MP Commander XP and Respect points earned and updated per kill instead of per game.
  • Refactored Use tooltip Code to make MUCH more consistent and accurate
  • Use key utilizes Priority layering For when multiple usable objects overlapping

Bugs:
  • Fix next round time on official servers
  • Fixed Flash grenade selection throwing Molotov
  • Roofs in Village now have proper Collision.
  • Swapping Squad mates does not change weapons
  • Removed BSP from Village Level
  • Chat Text Field No longer overlaps with chat log
  • Enemies Should no longer throw grenades after death.
  • Fixed connecting to Official Server Listings if Steam Server is in list
  • Pickup Weapon tooltip Hides when weapon despawns
  • Fixed grenades not getting thrown correctly in multiplayer

Alpha 0.5.2 Now Live

We just want to thank everyone for all the feedback during our launch. We have had tons of bugs and note and comments and believe me when I say we are very grateful for them all!

Now, we have done some fixes and changes and pushed them out for everyone to test. Take a look below for the latest change log for Recruits. We are still doing fixes and changes and starting to get back into content development.

Changes:
  • Show warning screen when launching without recruits
  • Squad members move to point even if cant resolve on nav mesh as long as clear line of sight
  • Add Scroll Bar to resolution Select in Options Menu and Map select.
  • Removed Kill all enemies objective from Tank Level
  • Objectives HUD stays open by default
  • Single Player Memorial list now sorts by latest death at top
Bugs:
  • Helicopter Mission Final Objective now assigned properly
  • Fixed issue in tank mission with destroying barricade before being assigned objective
  • Fixed Squad Hud from bugging out when swapping recruits with 1234 keys.
  • Tips now trigger more consistently
  • Can no longer shoot through walls if gun is clipped through them
  • Squad HUD no longer overlaps entries on certain resolutions (1920x1080)
  • Fixed Memorial Death Dates being clipped in menu

About This Game

Recruits is a brutal fast paced top down shooter that puts the lives of countless amounts of soldiers in your command. Lead your men to victory and see them progress through the ranks, show them defeat and they will be lost forever.

Your role as a commander puts you in charge of managing a platoon of soldiers during the war. Take men into battle one squad at a time to accomplish your missions, along the way gaining experience and respect that allows you to better equip and customize your soldiers.

Only by keeping your men alive, gaining medals and awards and defeating an overwhelming amount of enemies can you hope to be victorious during this time in history.



Recruits is in ALPHA, meaning that is is currently not finished. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME unless you are happy to contribute to the development and play it with bugs and issues. This game is on Steam so that it can reach a wider audience and players can help contribute to the active development of Recruits.

Current Features

  • General Gameplay – Full body dismemberment and gore, weather effects, physics and destruction and time of day lighting effects.
  • Variety of Mission Objectives – Including kill all enemies, destroy all buildings, covert operations and survival situations.
  • Soldier Progression – Permanent death, enlisted rank progression, personal attributes and customizable nicknames and load outs.
  • Special Abilities and Weapons – As a Commander, earn respect points to unlock upgraded weaponry and special abilities such as Airstrikes and Cluster Bombs.

I voted for this on Greenlight as I've always liked the top down shooters, if you remember a game called Cannon Fodder you'll know exactly how much fun these can be :)

I bought the game before its release on Steam as I think it has great potential and wanted to support the devs with a little early cash, it has had a few changes since I originally bought it, the addition of new missions and a new helicopter to name just two things.

It's very easy to pick up and play but it can be very tactical too as some missions do require a bit of thought and strategy firstly so you can't really go in 'all guns blazing' especially on the stealth missions.

I see the devs online regularly and can see them ingame when they are adding new things, fixing bugs or just asking for our feedback during any testing.

I'm looking forward to seeing where they take the game now :D

Played it during alpha test and been following the development of the game and i must say it's looking really good! Developers are doing an incredible job , the gameplay seems so good and we finally get a good top down shooter with a multiplayer component! Also the art in the game is amazing , the models are looking really good and the lighting is perfect! Good job guys keep the good work up! All the best.

Gotto say,

This game had me there for a second.. The controls are swift and the enemies are fast; so are their bullets.
Basically, "Recruits" is a lot like "Cannon Fodder", but a lot more unforgiving. You have to learn to aim fast and steady while outrunning enemy bullets.
Besides some basic gameplay elements which I think are kind of missing, the foundation is solid and deadly.
I think it could be best described as a mix between "Cannon Fodder" and a breeze of "Soldiers - Heroes of World War 2" and a lot like "Running with Rifles" with nice graphics; because it's fast, easy to learn and hard to master.
Although the game can be prety entertaining it can also be very frustrating. For instance when you're playing a jungle map you can't rotate the camera to look around. It seems to be fixed at a certain angle. (Facing North). Maybe I overlooked something, but if they don't fix this, well, that could be a major killer, because that small feature made sure that I died many times.
Also, some things seem to be just scripted. Like: approach enemy, shoot, he throws grenade, even if he's dead already. Seems a bit off to me and kills the stealth factor.

But, due to the fact that this is an early access game, I have high hopes for it.
So far what I've seen is good and solid.

Do you remember cannon fodder ? Of course you do. If you liked that game you might like this one to.
Its a topdown squad shooter game. It has nice graphics and good controls. Overall its a really good game with lots of potential.
But.. yeah there are plenty of buts in this game. The AI is in this game leaves plenty to the imagination. Your own squad AI consist of shooting you in the back or the other AI in the squad. And the enemy AI move like squads and throws grenades and shoots at you instead of their own and they are pretty accurate with their guns.
You can give your AI soldiers commands but they hardly ever work like they should and the AI get stuck quite often in trees or pallets.
In this version we get to try jungle warfare, flying a chopper and driving a tank and even stealth elements.
So it got very much potential in form of maps/gameplay but then again the AI strikes. When flying a chopper or driving a tank the AI doesnt do much since you just wreck the place yourself pretty much godmode. The stealth mission the AI get stuck in the fence, rocks, trees yeah well i think the rolled themselves in glue before the mission. And in the first jungle mission you can rush like rambo until your AI shoots you in the back.
But if you dont mind the broken AI and perhaps play with your friends instead, when this options will work i'm sure the game will be freaking awesome just like cannon fodder was back in the day.
So to finsih it up

This game is a great over the top squad based shooter. The gameplay mixes tactics and combat skills in a nice package, and has a nice edge of difficulty. Even on the normal setting, your recruits can die from just a bullet or two if you're not careful (or sometimes your whole squad from one grenade). Like in XCOMM, your recruits "take their rank to the grave" adding a unique level to the gameplay and tactics (you really don't want to lose your OG commandos). The graphics are amazing for an indie game, and the physics are great; all running on the unreal engine that so many AAA games run on. This game started in 2011 from a small team of developers as a side project, and the product they released only a few years later is a very solid, great, and unique game
