About This Game

Legends of Eisenwald is an adventure game with tactical battles, RPG and strategy elements. Take the lead of a small feudal army and try to defend your right to survive in this ruthless medieval world.

The mysterious lands of old Germany are waiting for you - it's a land where the superstitions of the time have come to life. This isn’t a fantasy game. There are no elves or dragons here. There are only people - and their passions, sins and fears that often take a tangible form. Which path will you choose? Live according to your conscience? Or live by power and might? Or will you live by justice? And what is your justice, really?

Game features

  • A unique and dynamic combat system - each move is also an attack
  • The ability to individually equip *each* fighter in your army
  • A large selection of weapons, spells and abilities, including the option to use mounted units
  • Diverse upgrade trees, and each unit level up provides cosmetic changes
  • An intriguing non-linear story
  • A distinctive game world without common fantasy cliches
  • Over 50 hours of gameplay within the game. A main campaign consisting of eight chapters plus two additional scenarios.
  • A beautiful symphonic soundtrack in a medieval style
  • An accompanying Scenario Editor with the full set of developer tools

Great game. Difficult to stop playing. Here and there running through the map over and over again becomes a bit tedious, but nevertheless one keeps playing. There are some minor glitches, but not so much as it would keep you from playing. Maybe it's too short, and I doubt the replayability value. The combat system is nice, whatever other people may say in their comments. To say the truth I hate RTS-gaming and that may be one of the reasons I like this "old school" gameplay a lot. In hindsight one migth say that the storyline is too straightforward, there are clearly no alternative outcomes. But what do you want from an indie game. For its price it's value for money.

This is the first and only Early Access game I have backed so far, but it really has left me with a high standard mark that I doubt will be met by all the other projects I back in the future.

The game is amazing, people wouldn't think such a feat could be done with as little funding as this project had. The battlefield in this game offers a variety that might be overlooked at first glance, but it's that what makes it much better than HoMM or King's Bounty, at least in my eyes.

The battles in the games previously mentioned tend to become dull and repetitive after a while, and I grow tired of the game and don't touch it for a long while. But in the case of this game, the battles are always quick-paced and focused. You can't just fiddle around wasting turns, you have to move and so does your opponent. Planning before the battle is as important as the fight itself.

And that's just talking about how the fights go. The music is simply wonderful and the art is very well-polished. Still, it's a turn-based combat game, so it's a niche game on its own, but for a cautious turn-based player such as myself, this game has delivered much more than it promised.

Legends of Eisenwald is in my opinion one of the best games that came through greenlight. The story is good and exciting. While playing you will have many decisions to make, all of which make the story evolve in different directions. The graphics are also well done, and there are a lot of nice side stories which come with beautiful pictures which you can read in a tavern. This gives the game a good flair. The combat system has a balanced and demanding design. I always looked forward to the next battle, because after I won a fight, my knight can level up again.

A mix of King's Bounty and Disciples set in (more or less) medieval Germany.

The first impression can be somewhat off-putting, because the graphics and animations look simple and feel outdated for at least 5 years. Nevertheless, once you get past it and get into your first quests, the engine doesn't really matter anymore. After the tutorial map the story picks up quickly and the first full size campaign map is very entertaining.

If you enjoyed Disciples, HOMM or King's Bounty, and you don't mind simple graphics, I would definitely recommend this game.

Bonus points for including an excellent Belarusian translation!

Pre-Release Review
I went into this Early Access game made by a development studio i had not heard of unsure about its content and a bit skeptical about its quality, but soon after I began playing all these doubts were put to rest. I suddenly found myself deeply submerged into the game and all it has to offer. Legends of Eisenwald is a true strategic RPG game that skillfully combines the heroic elements of old-school role-playing with tactical turn-based combat and presented in a medieval setting filled with unique legends and folklore.

In this game players will create their hero from a selection of three initial classes and then recruit a small army to travel throughout the realm fulfilling quests, investigating myths and legends, and conquering castles among other things. LoE is still very much Early Access and there will certainly be more changes made. However, this game is entertaining and playable in its current state and offers a lot of nice features.

One of the most interesting features in this game is the concept of changing how the turn-based combat takes place. Unlike other games, Legends of Eisenwald has decided to remove movement points from combat in order to streamline it and make it more dynamic. I like knowing that one strategic movement or action can ultimately determine the outcome of a battle regardless of strength or numbers. Of course, there are lots of weapons, items, and spells typical to any RPG game that will also aid your army in battle. There is also an upgrade tree for improving your units as they gain experience along the way. The user interface is minimal and easy to use. Gameplay speed can be adjusted and there is an option to auto-play battles at any time. The developers have even included a level editor that will allow more content to be added by the community.

Being Early Access also means that the game still has a few drawbacks though. There are still a few bugs in the game so I recommend leaving auto-save enabled or save your game often. The game includes a function to send error reports and crashes directly to the developers when a bug is encountered. However, this is also somewhat buggy and does not always work as intended. Also, the game still lacks the lustrious shine that a finished product has. While the artwork and graphics are very nice and full of detail, there is still no "wow" factor when it comes to battle animations. There is a ton of lore in this game that is scripted well, but the english translation is not very good and can be confusing to read at times. One would think that this would have been picked up and sorted out through the beta testing community but currently it has not. Some voice acting would also enhance this game tremendously, but i'm not sure it is even being considered. Still, this game is an overall delight and it will definitely improve before its final release.

The Good:
=======
+ High quality artwork and music
+ Good storyline campaign with tutorial help
+ Solid game content offering many hours of play
+ Difficulty options that challenge players
+ Many customizing options and items for units and heroes
+ Adjustable game speed settings
+ Minimal requirements allow older systems to work
+ User interface is simple and convenient
+ Level editor included for the modding community
+ Steam Trading Cards and Achievements
+ Active development team

The Bad:
======
- Text translations (english) need a lot of work
- Bugs and game crashes still present
- No controller support
- Battle animations are dull and boring
- No voice acting or cutscenes/strictly point & click

Final Thoughts:
===========
Legends of Eisenwald is an entertaining game overall and considering its still in Early Access beta there is still a strong possibility that the game will be even better upon completion. While it still needs a lot of polishing and there are still a few scattered bugs in the coding, I still enjoyed it tremendously and would recommend it to fellow strategy/RPG gaming fans. With the right adjustments and improvements this game could become an instant classic.
