What the developers say:

“Paranormal is an Early Access game. This means that you can buy and play it right now, but it is still in alpha and constantly being worked on. This also means that the game could be glitchy, and you could encounter problems with it.

So why should you buy it? By buying Paranormal in its current state, it gives us funds to keep going and shape this game into what we have in mind. It's a very long and tedious process, and also expensive. You're basically helping us pay our voice actors, modelers, level designers, artists, and any license fees we may have.

Also, we are active on the Steam forums. So if you have any technical issues, or feedback and criticism, let us know! We'll get back to you ASAP.

Thanks,
-Matt Cohen”

ANNOUNCEMENT:
Paranormal is currently being ported to Unreal Engine 4. Without going too far into details, I can say that the reasons for the decision to port are the following:
Unreal Engine 4 offers superior performance, graphics, and compatibility.
It gives me the power to utilize new techniques for my scares that were inefficient in UDK.
UE4 will also allow more me to have more support, should I ever have a problem I can't handle on my own. I know it seems trivial, but sometimes even developers need help figuring certain things out.
Paranormal's Unreal Engine 4 port will be a free 'update' to the game, so you won't have to purchase it again. I stand by my declaration that every Paranormal DLC/Update/Expansion will be free to owners of the game.
Will it replace the current game? Technically, but I will make sure the current build is available to those who would hypothetically prefer it or those who feel like seeing what the game used to be like.
Regarding Paranormal's first announced major expansion, The Town...
Paranormal: The Town is also being ported to Unreal Engine 4, for all the same reasons I mentioned above.
But when can we expect to play the Unreal Engine 4 port of Paranormal?
Well, basically remaking an entire game takes time, but I intend to make it playable as soon as I feel I have the bare minimum amount of content ready for you all to play, test, and experience.
Until the port is released, I will continue to patch the current game. I will not abandon it.
If you feel like yelling at me for anything at all or just want to say 'hi', my twitter handle is @mattdementous.

ANNOUNCEMENT #2:
It's difficult for me to speak of this, but in January 2014 I learned of the passing of my dear friend, Richard Skepp (DJ Morfar), the voice of Paranormal's DJ Poltergeist. I owe so much to him and I value his friendship deeply. He will always be part of the Paranormal family.
----
Thank you all so much for continuing to be a part of Paranormal's development! Stay spooky.

Reviews

“If you can endure a half hour’s worth of me screaming and squealing — possibly more of the latter — as horrible and traumatizing things happen to me in what’s easily the scariest indie horror game I’ve played this year (and I’ve played a lot) then you’re going to love this.”

“Some horror fans may want to wait for Paranormal to become a more polished experience, but even unfinished it's packed with frightful and inventive ideas.”

About the Game

Experience the horrors of a haunting that's never the same twice.

Paranormal is a 3D fully dynamic haunting experience. The player takes the role of Mattel Clark, an artist who has a haunted house. Mattel decides to film the hauntings with his camera, which is the viewpoint of the game. The player controls the camera as the hauntings slowly but surely escalate into something far worse and more horrific.

With multiple endings, a different experience every time, top-notch graphics and sound, Paranormal is a constantly evolving indie horror game.

Features

  • Dynamic Haunting: I've designed the dynamic haunting system that will allow a randomized experience, adding multiple outcomes, dynamic triggers, countless variables, and an action-reaction system. This will make your experience with the game much more unique and memorable, without missing out on anything important.
  • Free Content Updates: Paranormal will receive free content updates that add new locations, stories, scenarios, scares, gameplay mechanics, and more! You will NEVER have to pay for DLC in Paranormal. The game's content is planned to double or even triple with each major content update.
  • Sleep System: Sleeping in your bed recharges your camera's batteries and also has a chance of triggering other events.
  • Flashlight (camera light): Creates a bright, short ranged light that casts dynamic shadows.
  • Insane Sound Design: Paranormal was designed for surround sound and headphones to create the ultimate audio horror experience.
  • First-Person Camera (Found-footage style): Much like in the movies 'Paranormal Activity' or 'The Blair Witch Project' (Not associated with those films, just inspired by them), the viewpoint will be that of a camera being held by a person (the player). Effects like camera shake, pixelation, video distortion, audio distortion, and motion blur will all be present thanks to the camera screen-space shader I built for everything.
  • Horrific Story: Uncover the house's troubled and gruesome past through hauntings, journal entries from the previous owner, and more.
  • Steam Trading Cards: Because one can never have enough of those things!

Planned Future Features

  • Mac Version: In the next few months, a Mac version will be made available and will receive updates alongside the PC version.
  • Achievements: Steam Achievements are planned for the game and there will be plenty to chase after!
  • Full Controller Support: Work has already started on making the game fully gamepad-compatible.
  • Oculus Rift Support: As promised as a Kickstarter stretch goal, Paranormal will receive an Oculus Rift version, free to owners of the game.
  • Steam Cloud Saves: For those who hop between machines.
  • Translations: The game's text is planned to be translated into German, Swedish, and Spanish. If your language isn't on that list, please request it in the forums.
  • DirectX 11: For those of you who have powerful computers, DirectX 11 support is planned for the future and will make the game look and run even better!
  • Persistence: Some sort of persistent scoring system is planned, adding more replay value.

Playing Paranormal:

Okay... neat. That's kinda weird.

Oh, those little mannequins are all over the place.

I just heard a spooky noise. Battery is about to die.

Go to sleep.

Wake up.

Mannequins are trying to murder me in sleep.

Run into bathroom.

Blood everywhere.

Door slams shut.

Cry.

Okay ... Im a Survial Horror fan, consider myself fairly seasoned to be honest, Ive seen a trend of these POV games, i.e. Slender, Scratchs etc. So, I figured what the heck right? Give this one a go. I gotta tell ya, Its scarey. THIS GAME IS *&$#@^* SCAREY! I didnt think it would be, I mean, Im from the Resident Evil (Old School Res not the new stuff), Silent Hill and Doom generation. I get sleepy durring the Exorcist, I love Horror, but its been dry for several years now. This game, is Epic, from a horror point of view. If you kill the lights, toss in some earbuds and put yourself into this game You .. Will .. get freaked out at least some what. I found a few parts that I was thining "Okay, just ignore it, and move on" ... then something ELSE would kick off. Its not all in your face either, some of it is subtly, some of it is straight sick, and the rest is just very, very well done. My hats off to this game and its devs, I think a lot of AAA developers out there need to take a look and pay attention to the details of a TRUE Haunting experience. If your like me and are a fan of Horror (not guts and slashers for eye candy sake), true Horror, and if you have a little back knowledge i.e. Demonology, Paranormal Investigation, seen The Exorcist or the Conjuring, then you will LOVE this game.

This is also the first review I have ever felt compelled to write on Steam, and I have been a member for years! Im sure its just one huge run on sentence, and my spelling sucks ... trust me I know, but the point remains the same, your reading this because you are interested in this game, and if you are interested, then stop waisting time and BUY it! You will not regret it and you wont be able to stop playing it .. except maybe to turn the lights back on if your that type of person ;P

Paranormal is a great early access horror game. The only truely cliched part of the game is the story behind the haunting, but the majority of the scares are quite interesting, in my experience. I don't know why, but the game has received quite a lot of hate on the internet; much of which is from people who don't realize that the game is an alpha or people who want to look tough as though they're not scared. The majority of the horror of this game is from the terror of not knowing what will happen next, and when something does happen, it's often not what one expects. It's this type of horror that made games like the first 3 Silent Hill games so great. I reccomend it to anyone who can stomache the pre-release jitters and is a fan of horror.

This early access explorational horror game has a lot of potential, with its promise of dynamic random gameplay; upcoming direct-X 11 graphics; and even future Oculus Rift support. However at this current stage of development I find the game to be rather basic and generic, with its limited gameplay, controls, writing, and even audio and visuals.

Unfortunately the biggest let down for me was the horror part of Paranormal. Perhaps it is just a case of me having been desensitised by years of playing survival horror games, but I find the scares on offer here to be rather dull – they are all just too clichéd and expected, with your usual “ghost appearing in the mirror for a second” and “water turning bloody” type fares. Overall the game has left me unfrightened, and to be honest unimpressed.

This game is a perfect example of how to make good contact with early access gamers because Matt Dementous replies regularly & I wish more game devs followed his example so if you want to give him praise or a thank you for all his hard work I suggest following his twitter https://twitter.com/MattDementous & leaving a thank you comment on his profile http://steamcommunity.com/id/mattdementous (I forgot to mention that Paranormal is a decent game but with enough work it can be the next horror masterpiece for everyone)
