What the developers have to say:

“Paranormal is an Early Access game. This means that you can buy and play it right now, but it is still in alpha and constantly being worked on. This also means that the game could be glitchy, and you could encounter problems with it.

So why should you buy it? By buying Paranormal in its current state, it gives us funds to keep going and shape this game into what we have in mind. It's a very long and tedious process, and also expensive. You're basically helping us pay our voice actors, modelers, level designers, artists, and any license fees we may have.

Also, we are active on the Steam forums. So if you have any technical issues, or feedback and criticism, let us know! We'll get back to you ASAP.

Thanks,
-Matt Cohen”

Patch Notes for Paranormal Patch #10 (UE4 ALPHA V004)

Patch #10 - 6/19/2016

Sorry about the wait. Been working hard on Paranormal. Big things are coming. Here is the latest build of the Paranormal Unreal Engine 4 remake alpha. The game is still a work-in-progress. Updates will be coming more frequently, adding more scares, story, and overall improvements to the experience. This patch has been focused on stabilizing the game on lower-end machines, as well as fixing glitches and adding scares (and other content).
Currently, this build is only available for the Windows version of the game. The Mac version of this build has had similar issues to the previous one. Once I've fixed those issues, I'll make it available alongside the Windows build.
The previous build SHOULD work with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows. Today's build is 64-bit only at the moment. Windows XP isn't technically supported, but there may be workarounds that I am unaware of.
(If this patch hasn't shown up for you yet, try reinstalling the game or waiting a bit and restarting Steam.)
Remember, the Unreal Engine 4 remake update will be free to everyone who owns the game.
--------------------
Improved overall performance
Fixed several physics-related issues
Improved randomization of items and scares
Improved pacing in general (still more work to be done here)
Added several scares (more to come in future updates)
Optimized the lighting (still more work to be done here)
Tons of various other improvements
Improved sound design (volume, reverb, quality, etc.)
Optimized house layout models (still more to be done)
Stabilized framerate on most machines
Added a way for the player to talk to the presence with your mic
Improved physics sounds
Improved footstep system
Added fully functional motion-sensing nightlights
Improved foliage animations based on wind intensity
Added footsteps for climbing the ladder to the attic
Improved accuracy of certain interaction triggers
Added wind chimes
Added an automatic white-balance system to improve camcorder feel
Fixed that bed-time crash again
Optimized decals and stains
Added a friend in the woods
Optimized most of the 3D models
Improved LOD system
Refused to exorcise ghost chair
Added/Modified some night cam scares
Added like 10,000 fireflies
Added washing-machine
Added rain effect on glass doors
Fixed audio settings issue
Fixed TV remote not working
Added squeaky floorboard
Added several night-cam scares
Many other changes I haven't listed due to forgetfulness.
--------------------
What still needs to be done?
I have the story's plot and branches all planned out, but not implemented fully into the game yet. The game currently has no plot progression, aside from some backstory stuff and the intro scene. This will be changed in the future.
More scares. Way more scares. And more randomization, both big and small.
More interaction with the environment.
And most importantly, whatever feedback all of you give me will help shape the game's future.
--------------------
This patch is dedicated to the horror movie Willow Creek. Watch it.
--------------------
Stay spooky.
-Matt

Reviews

“If you can endure a half hour’s worth of me screaming and squealing — possibly more of the latter — as horrible and traumatizing things happen to me in what’s easily the scariest indie horror game I’ve played this year (and I’ve played a lot) then you’re going to love this.”

“Some horror fans may want to wait for Paranormal to become a more polished experience, but even unfinished it's packed with frightful and inventive ideas.”

About This Game

Experience the horrors of a haunting that's never the same twice.

Paranormal is a 3D fully dynamic haunting experience. The player takes the role of Mattel Clarke, an artist who has a haunted house. Mattel decides to film the hauntings with his camera, which is the viewpoint of the game. The player controls the camera as the hauntings slowly but surely escalate into something far worse and more horrific.

With multiple endings, a different experience every time, top-notch graphics and sound, Paranormal is a constantly evolving indie horror game.

Features

  • Dynamic Haunting: I've designed the dynamic haunting system that will allow a randomized experience, adding multiple outcomes, dynamic triggers, countless variables, and an action-reaction system. This will make your experience with the game much more unique and memorable, without missing out on anything important.
  • Free Content Updates: Paranormal will receive free content updates that add new locations, stories, scenarios, scares, gameplay mechanics, and more! You will NEVER have to pay for DLC in Paranormal. The game's content is planned to double or even triple with each major content update.
  • Sleep System: Sleeping in your bed recharges your camera's batteries and also has a chance of triggering other events.
  • Flashlight (camera light): Creates a bright, short ranged light that casts dynamic shadows.
  • Insane Sound Design: Paranormal was designed for surround sound and headphones to create the ultimate audio horror experience.
  • First-Person Camera (Found-footage style): Much like in the movies 'Paranormal Activity' or 'The Blair Witch Project' (Not associated with those films, just inspired by them), the viewpoint will be that of a camera being held by a person (the player). Effects like camera shake, pixelation, video distortion, audio distortion, and motion blur will all be present thanks to the camera screen-space shader I built for everything.
  • Horrific Story: Uncover the house's troubled and gruesome past through hauntings, journal entries from the previous owner, and more.
  • Steam Trading Cards: Because one can never have enough of those things!
  • Mac Version: A Mac version is available and will receive updates alongside the PC version.

Planned Future Features

  • Achievements: Steam Achievements are planned for the game and there will be plenty to chase after!
  • Full Controller Support: Work has already started on making the game fully gamepad-compatible.
  • VR Support: Paranormal will receive Virtual Reality support, free to owners of the game.
  • Steam Cloud Saves: For those who hop between machines.
  • Translations: The game's text is planned to be translated into German, Swedish, and Spanish. If your language isn't on that list, please request it in the forums.
  • Persistence: Some sort of persistent scoring system is planned, adding more replay value.
  • Unreal Engine 4 Remake: The entire game is in the process of being remade using Unreal Engine 4. This remake will be available as a free update to owners of the game.

One of those titles that never leaves Early Access due to upgrading the engine and not working on it. See those sweet gameplay videos, no? That's because there isn't any gameplay. Unfinished, untouched for years.

don't buy this game, it's been on early acces for ages and it doesn't seem like it made any real progress at all since i played it the last time in 2013.

still the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥ graphics, soundeffects and pretty lame scares, with only a few new things added, like the cringeworthy voice acting on the radio in the garage.

not worth 10 bucks and absolutely not worth your time

There will be two reviews in one on this because of a previous version of the game and the Unreal remake of it.

The previous version is very promising in terms of what the unreal version will produce. Despite the graphics, getting stuck randomly and the look of items and rooms the game was enjoyable. The story was good but due to getting stuck and jumpscares not always appearing or something stopping them the game was harder to complete.

However, I have just completely playing the unreal version just now. Everything that gamers of the original game wanted is getting completely. Although updates are slower than other games, the updates are vast and add whole new details to the game. I appreciate that it now takes a little longer for the scares to start happening which I found enjoyable and likeable, to establish the setting and tension. Even with more scares, the game is really good.
Things to work on are
- The game rapidly drops in frame rate to 60fps down to 12 fps when I go near the fire or there is a lot of light even with light settings turned down
- More scares (that’s coming)
- When answering the phone, the camera battery would often die down very quickly meaning I would have to go to bed. The issue with this is that the audio continues playing and the protagonist continues talking in his sleep
- The SD card capacity reaches full amount and then I don't know what to do with it
- The subtitles at the introduction of the games start were too small and didn't notice them until mid-way through the whole speech.

EDIT: The game now works with your microphone. You can speak to the demon terrorising you!!!!

Other than that would 100% recommend while the game is cheaper and it is good to have an audience voice with a dev that cares.

As of writing, the Unreal Engine 3 version of the game remains unfinished but work is still being done on it's Unreal Engine 4 version, sticking to the same jumpscare-horror. Both versions remain unfinished.

What is Paranormal?

Review Author: ScottyNOW

'Paranormal', not to be confused with the 'Paranormal Activity' movie series. Paranormal, the video game, implements the same concept of poltergeists that cause havoc across houses, a nightmare for 'nannies' and cleaners alike. The story revolves around an artist (protagonist) in his place of residence, he is determined to understand what is going on around him as things seem to go 'bump' in the night; attempting to gain closure and regain his sanity from the footage gathered.

Audience and Verdict

I believe youtubers and horror fanatics (i.e me and you) will receive the most enjoyability out of this, I also recommend for the best consumer experience is to switch off any external lights and use with headphones. The experience wasn't revolutionary and other games seem to do the same thing better, regardless of this, the game itself is a work-in-progress, and as such, a pricetag of $5/£3.47/€4.41 is comendable at best. I honestly don't believe in the 3+ years of development that any groundbreaking progress has happened and this game is more of a hobby that the game developer tinkers with in his spare time than an actual game that will gain constant updates and with that in mind, I do NOT recommend it.

8/10 good game, i can see the game going places, places like oculus rift, imagine hearing a box move and turning your head and seeing a box stop moving in vr, and seeing all the jumpscares in 3d. i feel that the jumpscares happen all too fast and should have a very slow build up over time, for example, have either nothing or verry little happen for the first few days and then build up to 1 or 2 jumpscares a day that way people dont get used to expecting jumpscares. mabe u could sleep and wake up to find the ouiji board on the floor or in strange places and then decide to interact with it and slowly go from there. when it gets to the pre-climax mabe one of the wooden dolls could chase you, they seem to be a big fear! thats all i can think of as of now, but all in all a great game with a hopefull future.

Playing Paranormal:

Okay... neat. That's kinda weird.

Oh, those little mannequins are all over the place.

I just heard a spooky noise. Battery is about to die.

Go to sleep.

Wake up.

Mannequins are trying to murder me in sleep.

Run into bathroom.

Blood everywhere.

Door slams shut.

Cry.

Okay ... Im a Survial Horror fan, consider myself fairly seasoned to be honest, Ive seen a trend of these POV games, i.e. Slender, Scratchs etc. So, I figured what the heck right? Give this one a go. I gotta tell ya, Its scarey. THIS GAME IS *&$#@^* SCAREY! I didnt think it would be, I mean, Im from the Resident Evil (Old School Res not the new stuff), Silent Hill and Doom generation. I get sleepy durring the Exorcist, I love Horror, but its been dry for several years now. This game, is Epic, from a horror point of view. If you kill the lights, toss in some earbuds and put yourself into this game You .. Will .. get freaked out at least some what. I found a few parts that I was thining "Okay, just ignore it, and move on" ... then something ELSE would kick off. Its not all in your face either, some of it is subtly, some of it is straight sick, and the rest is just very, very well done. My hats off to this game and its devs, I think a lot of AAA developers out there need to take a look and pay attention to the details of a TRUE Haunting experience. If your like me and are a fan of Horror (not guts and slashers for eye candy sake), true Horror, and if you have a little back knowledge i.e. Demonology, Paranormal Investigation, seen The Exorcist or the Conjuring, then you will LOVE this game.

This is also the first review I have ever felt compelled to write on Steam, and I have been a member for years! Im sure its just one huge run on sentence, and my spelling sucks ... trust me I know, but the point remains the same, your reading this because you are interested in this game, and if you are interested, then stop waisting time and BUY it! You will not regret it and you wont be able to stop playing it .. except maybe to turn the lights back on if your that type of person ;P

Paranormal is a great early access horror game. The only truely cliched part of the game is the story behind the haunting, but the majority of the scares are quite interesting, in my experience. I don't know why, but the game has received quite a lot of hate on the internet; much of which is from people who don't realize that the game is an alpha or people who want to look tough as though they're not scared. The majority of the horror of this game is from the terror of not knowing what will happen next, and when something does happen, it's often not what one expects. It's this type of horror that made games like the first 3 Silent Hill games so great. I reccomend it to anyone who can stomache the pre-release jitters and is a fan of horror.

So, before I get blasted or you decide to skip this game because of my no to reccommending this game, let me explain.

Paranormal is a good game, I enjoyed it, it was creepy, scary, it changes each time you play it but there is one reason I do not and will not reccomend this game to anyone and that is it's been in alpha for going on 3 years now, they were suppose to add a free DLC expansion to the game called "The Town" that they have yet to release and recently announced that they are instead re-doing the game in unreal engine 4, which sure looks nice, but has left alot of us feeling cheated.

We paid for a game that was in progress because it looked good and were under the impression that within a year, year in a half we'd have a bad ♥♥♥ survival horror game that was complete. 3 years later and we are sitting here scratching our heads asking why it hasn't delivered yet, the game as is, is only worth $5.00, you will get through it in about 20 minutes tops, 30-40 minutes if you search each nook and cranny. So as of right now, no I wouldn't reccomend this game, in the future if they ever do release a "completed" version, that might change, but only once its complete.

come on guys, 3 years........

Ok, two playthroughs in (died both times). STUPID CREAPY GAME!!!

Forget the graphics, the atomosphere is where this game shines! It made me jump a couple times but not from something jumping out in my face, it was what I couldnt see that spooked me. The odd sounds, the items that moved on their own, doors closing behind you, you are in a haunted house and it feels like it. Very suspenseful but very short playthroughs.

It's somewhat like that movie Paranormal Activity, but in the players perspective, so you get scared as how the ambient changes around you and you hear strange sounds. Game is not how I would describe it, it's more like an audio visual experience. The graphics and sound could be a lot better but it's not bad for an indie game that was recently launched on Greenlight and is still under some development.

--------

10 out of 10.
When the creator(s) stated "when you play the game, it's never the same game twice", they weren't lying. Several hours in and it still creeps me out. The graphics could be better but can be easily overlooked with the scare factor of the game. Take "Paranormal Activity" and cross breed it with your worst nightmares, and this is what you get.
