What the developers have to say:

“Paranormal is an Early Access game. This means that you can buy and play it right now, but it is still in alpha and constantly being worked on. This also means that the game could be glitchy, and you could encounter problems with it.

So why should you buy it? By buying Paranormal in its current state, it gives us funds to keep going and shape this game into what we have in mind. It's a very long and tedious process, and also expensive. You're basically helping us pay our voice actors, modelers, level designers, artists, and any license fees we may have.

Also, we are active on the Steam forums. So if you have any technical issues, or feedback and criticism, let us know! We'll get back to you ASAP.

Thanks,
-Matt Cohen”

Patch Notes for Paranormal Patch #6 (UE4 PT2)

Patch #6 - 12/31/14

This update leaves the base game unchanged, while including a new "playable teaser" for the upcoming free update that will be remaking the game using Unreal Engine 4. This playable teaser includes the previous one (the security camera view of a kitchen) as well as the house level from the upcoming UE4 update, just without scares. I repeat: THERE ARE NO SCARES IN THIS BUILD. This build is designed for you to determine how well the Unreal Engine 4 build of Paranormal may run on your PC, as well as give me feedback on level design. There is currently a delay on the Mac version of this Playable Teaser due to issues with the build of UE4 I'm on (I get constant crashes on my MacBook so I'm waiting for a fix in the next engine update). If you run into any issues, let me know in the Discussions.
This Playable Teaser does not represent the gameplay of Paranormal on Unreal Engine 4.
While there is no set release date for Paranormal's UE4 remake, I can announce that I'm at the point in development where I'm adding scares.
For more information on the upcoming Paranormal Unreal Engine 4 remake mega-update, check out my previous announcement or ask me on Twitter (@mattdementous) or on Paranormal's Steam forums.
Have a Happy New Year. Thank you so much for all the support and feedback. This is only a teaser of what is to come. I look forward to showing you all more soon. Stay spooky. -Matt Cohen

Patch Notes for Paranormal Patch #5 (UE4 PT1)

Patch #5 - 10/25/14

This update leaves the base game unchanged, while including a "playable teaser" for the upcoming free update that will be remaking the game using Unreal Engine 4. This playable teaser is non-interactive--it's a security camera view of a kitchen where randomized hauntings occur. It also includes a menu with customizable graphics settings. This will allow you to determine how well the Unreal Engine 4 build of Paranormal may run on your PC or Mac. If you run into any issues, let me know in the Discussions.
This Playable Teaser does not represent the gameplay of Paranormal on Unreal Engine 4. It's merely an improved remake of Paranormal's original main menu scene.
While there is no set release date for Paranormal's UE4 remake, I can announce that I'm at the point in development where I'm adding scares. I hope to have something playable for all of you in the upcoming weeks or months.
For more information on the upcoming Paranormal Unreal Engine 4 remake mega-update, check out my previous announcement or ask me on Twitter (@mattdementous) or on Paranormal's Steam forums.
Have a safe and fun Halloween. Thank you so much for all the support and feedback. This is only a teaser of what is to come. I look forward to showing you all more soon. Stay spooky. -Matt Cohen

“If you can endure a half hour’s worth of me screaming and squealing — possibly more of the latter — as horrible and traumatizing things happen to me in what’s easily the scariest indie horror game I’ve played this year (and I’ve played a lot) then you’re going to love this.”

About This Game

Experience the horrors of a haunting that's never the same twice.

Paranormal is a 3D fully dynamic haunting experience. The player takes the role of Mattel Clark, an artist who has a haunted house. Mattel decides to film the hauntings with his camera, which is the viewpoint of the game. The player controls the camera as the hauntings slowly but surely escalate into something far worse and more horrific.

With multiple endings, a different experience every time, top-notch graphics and sound, Paranormal is a constantly evolving indie horror game.

Features

  • Dynamic Haunting: I've designed the dynamic haunting system that will allow a randomized experience, adding multiple outcomes, dynamic triggers, countless variables, and an action-reaction system. This will make your experience with the game much more unique and memorable, without missing out on anything important.
  • Free Content Updates: Paranormal will receive free content updates that add new locations, stories, scenarios, scares, gameplay mechanics, and more! You will NEVER have to pay for DLC in Paranormal. The game's content is planned to double or even triple with each major content update.
  • Sleep System: Sleeping in your bed recharges your camera's batteries and also has a chance of triggering other events.
  • Flashlight (camera light): Creates a bright, short ranged light that casts dynamic shadows.
  • Insane Sound Design: Paranormal was designed for surround sound and headphones to create the ultimate audio horror experience.
  • First-Person Camera (Found-footage style): Much like in the movies 'Paranormal Activity' or 'The Blair Witch Project' (Not associated with those films, just inspired by them), the viewpoint will be that of a camera being held by a person (the player). Effects like camera shake, pixelation, video distortion, audio distortion, and motion blur will all be present thanks to the camera screen-space shader I built for everything.
  • Horrific Story: Uncover the house's troubled and gruesome past through hauntings, journal entries from the previous owner, and more.
  • Steam Trading Cards: Because one can never have enough of those things!
  • Mac Version: A Mac version is available and will receive updates alongside the PC version.

Planned Future Features

  • Achievements: Steam Achievements are planned for the game and there will be plenty to chase after!
  • Full Controller Support: Work has already started on making the game fully gamepad-compatible.
  • Oculus Rift Support: As promised as a Kickstarter stretch goal, Paranormal will receive an Oculus Rift version, free to owners of the game.
  • Steam Cloud Saves: For those who hop between machines.
  • Translations: The game's text is planned to be translated into German, Swedish, and Spanish. If your language isn't on that list, please request it in the forums.
  • DirectX 11: For those of you who have powerful computers, DirectX 11 support is planned for the future and will make the game look and run even better!
  • Persistence: Some sort of persistent scoring system is planned, adding more replay value.

Ok, two playthroughs in (died both times). STUPID CREAPY GAME!!!

Forget the graphics, the atomosphere is where this game shines! It made me jump a couple times but not from something jumping out in my face, it was what I couldnt see that spooked me. The odd sounds, the items that moved on their own, doors closing behind you, you are in a haunted house and it feels like it. Very suspenseful but very short playthroughs.

Really delivers on the creepiness. Best to play this with the lights off and headphones on. Still a little rough around the edges at this point in development, but shows tremendous promise.

This is one of the times that I with there was some another option other than yes or no when it came to recommending this game. I personally like the IDEA of the gameplay and the concept, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that I love the general gameplay as it stands right now either. Hopefully that'll make more sense as you continue to read my review, but let's get down to it.

In terms of graphics, it actually looks pretty decent for an indie game. I've seen some people saying that their computers couldn't handle it...but I've got a Nvidia Geforce 610 GT and I managed to run the game with just about everything on whilst also getting some pretty decent frames, so seeing as how this is a 'work in progress' I'm sure that subject to change...for the good or otherwise.
When it comes to the camera effects and the SFX and whatnot, I'd say that's mostly where the game shines at in terms of graphics. The distortions are done pretty well, there's some haze if you try to look at something in the distance, and the colors even begin to seperate when it rains (I.E. the water causes the camera to see Red, Green, and Blue). Now, all this being said, there are some flaws here and there. Some examples would be some textures looking...a bit outdated/out of place, randomly changing pictures (And not in the good way either...as in the paintings seem to be actually changing into something completely different before my eyes at times. If that's part of the game, then just shoot me a message, but I'm pretty sure I saw one of those Michael Jackson paintings literally morph into one of the bathroom paintings.)

There are some things that I did kinda gripe about in the game that others might say was just me nitpicking, but personally they kinda stood out a lot. For one thing the perspective of your character is...odd. I feel like he's taller than the viewpoint may imply, as referenced by the furniture and whatnot, but whenever I attempted to interact with something I couldn't help but feel like I was incredibly short. The rooms could have been a bit more interesting in my opinion, and the design of the house just felt...off.

Now the sound is one of the high points. Listening to the game via my computer speakers doesn't do it enough justice, so I normally use my headphones when I play this game. It does a fair job of immersing you into the game via sound, and it does help to make the game more atmospheric/scary.

When it comes to gameplay, the premise of the game is pretty basic. You go around the house and record the strange occurances that happen there, or don't happen as the case may be. You've got your flashlight, and you've also actually got a time limit on how long you can stay up before you have to charge your camera. If you don't make it back to your bedroom before the battery hits zero then you die. You can go around the house and collect/read the letters left behind by the previous owner, as well as learn the history of the house via the laptop, or you can learn about our main character's background.

The story is nothing special at all. It's actually your typical 'Haunted House' type plot. I understand that the game is supposed to be, more or less, of an homage to Paranormal Activity, but the story could really have been a bit less cliched in my opinion. Not that you're required to even figure out the story, as you could just play the game without ever picking up a single note.

The scares aren't very scary. I jumped due to...well, jump-scares, but that's it. I never felt real-deal fear while I played the game, and some of the scares just felt a bit forced and really typical for me. I get that they're dynamic to help make the game stay fresh, but that only works if the game continues to scare you...that never really happened for me.

This isn't going to affect my decision on how I'd rate this game, but if you came here with the expectation that the game would have fairly frequent updates...well, then you may want to look elsewhere. As you could probably tell from the patch-notes about, the game hasn't been updated since April. I don't currently know what the creator is doing as of right now, but I had heard that he has tried to fund the project through a website other than Kickstarter. I currently don't know the name.

Personally, I don't know if I'd recommend this game as it stands. I liked the idea/concept of this game, and I'd very much like to see how much farther it'll go during development, but as it stands it's just an alright game to me. It offers nothing new in the way of gameplay, story, or otherwise, but at the same time the premise of the game is pretty appealing to those who like to try out new things.

First off, the game is ugly - let's just get that out of the way. The story is paper-thin (basically, it really is just a haunted house). There's minimal interaction or puzzles. At one point, my game ended and I don't know why, exactly ... I saw a black silhouette and tried to interact, and I guess it killed me?

Anyway, on a more positive note, it's quite effectively creepy. I am a jaded, modern-day 20 something, and it still made me jump a couple times. It's not amazing, by any stretch of imagination, but it's definitely worth giving it a little bit of your time on a dark note all by yourself.

Day 1: I walk around. Says to myself "Aww, this is nuthin" Then I walk in the garage and hear a footstep noise. Uh oh, battery must be low. Walks into the living room and looks on the wall and in blood it says "no". I run upstairs and go into the bathroom for no reason. A bathroom can be scary right? I walk to the mirror and a baby face pops up. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" Runs to bed.

Day 2: I say "This game isnt too scary. I played it a little. This time it will be better". I start walking into the room under the basement and then a voice goes "RAAHAHAH" and I scream like a 2 year old and run into the kitchen. I look out the window to see nothing. I then turn around and see jeremy standing there. He didnt scare me too bad. I move out of the way and I go upstairs and I stop walking to look at the Michael Jackson painting and I hear foot steps. I then go to bed.

Day: 3 I wake up and play the game. I beat it until I die from some weird ghost thing. I dont know how to get further ahead into the game. Please tell me how. Whenever I press a different chapter it loads then goes back to the title screen. Please help.

Day: 4 I am playing with my friend at my house, so I wil be ok. We both keep saying "were men! We wont get scared" Five seconds later were screaming so loud that my dog thought I was being hurt /:
We keep walking and BOOF theres jeremy in front of me. Nuthing too scar- AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Day: 5 OMG im freaked out. Im gonna die... im gonna die... and for no good reason My internet shuts offf temporarily... 100/10

The game is quite interesting. I found myself getting shivers down my spine while simply walking through a room. The general atmosphere and jump scares made it much more enjoyable than something like Slender or another generic game. Even though it is inspired by a terrible movie, it is enjoyable and unique. It's really hard to find good horror games these days and I'm glad I found this one. I made a let's play of it if anyone wants to watch: http://youtu.be/o2jQ5peFLiM

Scary as hell! A bit of a revival of the horror genre in a sense. It's great to see games like this come out, some truly scary games like this and Outlast. Brings a tear to the eye of those of us who thought horror was a dying genre.

The game delivers the scares. That's the reason that I and probably many others bought it. But you will quickly be reminded that it's still in alpha. There are bugs all over.

If you can deal with that, then go for it. The creepyness and scary moments are there. But if you're looking for a smoother and more complete game then I'd stay away until it's at least in beta.

This game, I must admit, is a pretty awesome f*cking game. The graphics are good for indie and so is the idea. Sure, there are some annoying as hell glitches, but what game doesn't have that? There is one thing that is really annoying me though. I hate that you can't save your progress and that there aren't any real objectives really. I mean, you kind-of just walk around until your battery dies. So, if you could add objectives and a way to save progress on the game, I'm pretty sure this would be in my top 10 indie games.

In its current status: Waste of Money.

- Game has been in development forever and has not gone anywhere. Okay, Granted it has spooky paranormal activity style antics, but that is as good as it gets. The achievements are not active, there is no story plot, and no matter what you will die on the 3rd day regardless. Its hilarious or shocking the amount of ways you die, aside from that i'm literally playing Paranormal Activity.
