The Road to 1.0

Big news everyone, Spacebase DF-9 1.0 will be released next month! It’s been a pleasure sharing this experience with those of you who picked the game up during Early Access and provided the feedback that helped shape it into what it has become.

To those who were waiting until the final release to start building a base of your own, we put together this timeline-infographic to show how far we come since Early Access release and what new stuff you can expect:



As for what will be added between now and the 1.0 build, new features will be aimed at providing the complete experience you’d expect of a non-Early Access game: a Tutorial mode to smooth out the early game a bit and help new players learn the basics, and a Goal system that lets you work towards concrete objectives. That as well as over a month’s worth of pure bug-fixing work and final polish.

We’re also pleased to announce we’ll be releasing the game’s full Lua source code a short time after 1.0, which will allow the community to create potentially far-ranging mods that add content, new features, and change some fundamental game behaviors. We’ll of course be sticking around a bit for bug fixing and support, but any new content for the game will now be in your hands. We’re eager to see what people do with this game!

To those who purchased the game early on and donated extra for the “Famous Citizen”, “Stargazer”, and “Extradimensional Entity” tiers: all customer names will be in-game for 1.0, and before long we’ll unveil the poster and art print we’ll be sending out to those customers. Spoiler alert: THEY’RE LOOKING BEAUTIFUL!!

We’re extremely grateful for the support and feedback you’ve given us so far. Thank you for making all this possible. Now, back to work… we’ve got hundreds of bugs to fix before 1.0!

It's been in Alpha for a year and is suddenly going to 1.0 next month. They're just gonna skip beta stage, add a tutorial, iron out a few bugs, and leave the rest to modders. Almost none of the stuff originally teased http://web.archive.org/web/20131018054131/http://spacebasedf9.com/devplans that people bought the game for is to be found. This game is too barebones to be worth your 25 bones. Double Fine has fallen from grace, for whatever inexplicable reason. :/

You can play through all of the content within a few hours.

Tengo sentimientos encontrados con este juego, por un lado me parece que tiene muy buen diseño y buenas ideas que llevar a cabo, pero por otro, le falta bastante contenido, y el tan comentado problema de los bugs, que te puede fastidiar una partida y tener que volver a empezar.

Mención especial a la banda sonora, me parece espectacular.

Si os gusta la ciencia ficción y los juegos de construcción, y lo podéis comprar en ofertas, pues entonces no está mal.

Por ahora le daré un voto de confianza, esperemos que sigan añadiendo contenido y mejorando esos bugs catastróficos.

SEPTEMBER 22 EDIT: Do not buy this game. The game is going into "1.0" release next month and is being left to modders to finish it up. They claim they're going to fix bugs, but as I made clear in the review below, they couldn't even finish the A.I. during thier "Alpha" stage.

This game is like an incredibly dumbed-down Dwarf Fortress in space. Key word being dumb.

The AI has incredibly complex inabilities to solve their problems. They would rather let themselves asphyxiate in the cold of space than finish constructing the airlock that is filled with oxygen. Why? Because the unfinished part is a space suit locker. They were in space suits already.

In a previous run, the builders refused to add onto the life support section because oxygen was running low (for some unknown reason) and so the whole crew suffocated.

Another run, I had to tear down a door I placed. That destroyed the wall and converted the next room from an airlock into a reactor, and while trying to fix that, the builder simply never finished construction. The crew died because they had no airlock to exit and expand and there was a hole into space.

The security have no sense of uniformity and would rather walk one at a time into a derelict and die continuously to the same thing.

You can't place objects in 4 directions, only two. I don't know why 4-view camera controls aren't implemented yet, but its frustrating to deal with as you have so much unused space.

It's a neat concept and can become a good game, but it is not at all worth your time or money. It is bug-ridden. It has very stupid AI. If the developers can create useful viewing controls and decent AI that you don't have to play around in a nit-picky manner, it'll be a fun, hard game of balance between many facets of every characters' needs and wants, and management of a space station.

Parece que nadie que es un juego ALPHA, ni siquiera llega a ser BETA, como no va a tener bugs y faltarle contenido. Pienso que sera un gran juego y espero pronto su salida final.

I really try to like this game, I really do. But between the horrible AI, UI, and overall game meta, not to mention lackluster developer support over the course of the last year I cannot with good conscience recommend this to anybody. Wait at least until beta to buy this, and only if they significantly alter the meta-game.

As it stands the AI are imbecilic, the gameplay progression borders on unfair or unplayable even at low difficulty, and the game has a daisy chain of progressive bugs and glitches that functionally cripple your base the longer you play. Invisible raiders? Yes. Unhealable citizens? Got that too. Ludicrous pathing? Sure! Lack of transparency in regards to what you're placing into the game? Oh hell yes, have to rely on an oft-incomplete wiki full of speculations.

You would be better off looking to ancient games like Space Colony, or Startopia for a game of this genre that works. (More in the case of Startopia) This is what bugs me the most, since I normally would expect good things from a Double Fine game, if only because I enjoyed Brutal Legend. But it is obvious to me that Double Fine isn't investing many resources in this game, and probably have no intention of doing so either.

My prediction? A halt in development by Fall of 2014 when the dev team gets recalled to work on what is seen as more 'profitable' ventures. But maybe I'm just pessimistic because I've played games like this in the past with far higher levels of development from studios most people have never even heard of. (Okay, it's moving up into fall 2014 when I edited this and still no halt.. I can only hope that alpha 6 is some sort of incredible improvement.. But I won't hold my breath.)

Space Colony - Available on GOG for 9.99 (Again, something Spacebase DF-9 could learn about creating at least tolerably realistic social interactions in somewhat of a fun fashion.)
