The Dead Linger is a game I've been on the middle with for a long, long time. First let me say, the reason why this is a no isn't because it's bad - but because progress is so painfully slow and small. The game - if completed with all promised features - will be a fantastic one for any zombie survival enthusiast.

I have been in the community since the original kickstarter, so don't let the 100 minutes of playtime fool you. The Dead Linger has promised such a large amount of things that it's becoming hard to believe it will happen. The basic game functions are there: looting, building, barricading, food, et cetera. Even the multiplayer isn't half bad, being fairly optimized with little lag. But we get a large update approximately four to five times a year. And these large updates usually include small fixes and one partially implemented game mechanic.

However, it should be said that updates STILL happen - and we are even kept informed on these updates (Screen shots, information, weekly blogs from the devs, et cetera.) This isn't quite like the other indie games that got so popular and so much money at the beginning that the devs just half ♥♥♥ things. They are trying and it's obvious the amount of effort they put into it.

Personally, I recommend not buying this unless you are a complete and total early access person like I am. This game is, to me, a 50/50 chance of turning out how we wanted or not. So for now, I do not recommend it to anyone who wants a game that definitely has a future.

Check out Project Zomboid for now if you want a good survival zombie game (Although it's not 1st person.)

Been following the game for awhile now and after a quick taste (Build 14).. it's not half bad. It does show promise and i'm at least not being killed for a hat and a can of beans. Oh, and i suck at getting headhsots with bows and guns like i would in real life.

The bike is my bestfriend. 10/10

-Not being shot for a can of beans or a hat
-Can run on my laptop
-atmosphere and the music really brings it all together
-Night time is creepy
-Zombies will always find/follow you (can be a con??? but builds on the creepiness)
-Build 14 does make it look better than previous builds #eyecandysaga
-Bikes are your friends
-plenty of loot

-Melee is as bad of an idea in this game as it is in DayZ (Don't do it)
-Random zombie spawning behind me inside buildings???
-Temporarily freezing when generating the next area (what i get for playing on a laptop)
-bugs and glitches #alpha (which aren't that bad. falling through the world isn't gamebreaking)
-needs more optimization although build 14 boosted performance a lot.

First spawned in a small town where I ran into a home for shelter against the zeds, I found a shotgun inside along with some food and a jacket. Left to scavenge for other useful things, I ended up finding more shotgun ammo along with a crossbow before getting trapped inside the house by a horde, used couches and refrigerators to barricade myself inside but had to escape through the top window. I cut down a couple trees with my hatchet while exhausting the rest of my crossbow ammo, the horde managed to catch up to me and I had to leave the town via bicycle where I found another horde that made the other one look like a joke, fled to a nearby forest where I made a fireplace before being caught and devoured by the horde that surrounded me in a ring of death.
would spawn again

If you want to PLAY a zombie survival game RIGHT NOW ,I do not recommend this !
Gameplay is already awesome but ends withing 10 hours (maximum) ! Why :

Not because the game is not finished yet because the Dev's were developing other stuff:
- Changing the WHOLE ♥♥♥♥ING ENGINE
- Adding the first & very basic Crafting System (Hunting ,Logs ,Meat Cooking)
- Better melee combat ,a Quality/Fix Update ,the first vehicle ,a Dogzombie ,basic clothing !
- A Graphics Update (now the game does not look like ♥♥♥♥ anymore)
- ZOMBIE VARIATION WITH CLOTHING (Coming in Build 15 ,which should get released 3 days after my post)

When will a content Update come out ?
BUILD 16 (Citys ,Enemy Tanks & more...)

Why do I recommend this ?
This game has very high potential and there is nothink like this out there !
A infinite zombie survival world ,100% freedom ,0% Blocks and Mining ♥♥♥♥)
Get it 10$ cheaper xD ,this is an investigation !

As it stands right now as of 20-10-2014-@18:25 Build-14 then No.

My reasoning for this is because the lack of updates and the lack of decent content to see or interact with in the game world, Plus the overall general look and performance is overall poor "For Now That Is".
And also the Fact that some people dont understand how ALPHA testing works.

Please also bare in mind that this game is still very early into its ALPHA stage.

Personally !
I would recommend to buy it and sit on it untill the beta or the game gets more fleshed out.
As they say what more could you want at this stage for £15.00p bar the penny.

Also on a side note,
lets not forget that the guy's behind this game are really working hard to get the games look & feel right,
Hence the lack of weekly/monthly updates.

As well as the fact that the guy's are a really small team of dev's that are trying there darned hardest to get there dream realized and into the community.

Patience Is Key.
Buy now to get at a discount price,
Wait it out till the game gets more content.
Then buzzin youll have brought it for a relatively good price of 15 quid when it goes up.

One last thing,
Build 15 is due any time soon.
This build has got a number of things that the dev's have been working on & added from improvements overall to the graphics to performance issues sorted and a number of bugs crunched.

You can find this all out at there website below

Here you will find a lot of updates regarding to the games progress and work that they are currently trying to implement.
Cheers For Reading My Review.

It plays pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend you buy it just yet. Content is very slow to come out, and has cause quite a few problems for me. Mostly not liking the last few updates and not working. This game has a lot of potential, but I'd recommend you wait for a few more updates before you snag yourself a copy.

This is obviously early Alpha, my review so far: On the plus side there is a good level of object interaction, at least with the objects that are there. This game has potential. But... there is nothing much in the game to keep me coming back to it. Its just empty space... miles and miles of nothing. If you find a town, just stay there, because finding another one takes a level of patience that I don't think exists among gamers. Roads will not lead you to another town, they often just end in the middle of nowhere. Buildings are pretty basic and bland at this point, and zombies are pretty non-threatening. I don't mind the slow moving zombies, but they aren't even slightly creepy. There are bicycles in the game, but I strongly suggest staying in town with them, outside of certain surfaces you will just end up literally riding it into the ground, right through the road, and through the grass layer below that, right into glitch land. This game has a long way to go. ONLY BUY THIS IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT. As it stands, its just not worth playing other than to check out the game mechanics and imagine the potential. Now let me be clear, this game could be awesome.... time will tell.

In it's current state this game doesn't have much to offer(being in alpha), but you can see the worlds of potential. The game devs see it too, as show by the developement roadmap. But if this game doesn't get the support it needs, that potential might not get realized. so if your on the fence about it, which many people are, just get it. It's only $20 that's not very much. Once they're done this game will be epic! It's just in its infancy at this point.

P.S. if you buy the game go to coordinates X:0,Y:0. The point of origin. :)

I'd like to add that I enjoy playing this game, even in this state. I'm not hoping I'll eventually like it, I already like it. So, Yeah! this is definitely going to be a great game.

For an early Alpha this is a pretty good game. There is some signs of memory leaking and the game does seem hard to load at times, but the core features in the game now make up for that. The randomized chunk loading the game has is also very cool and makes this game different from the other zombie survivals out there.

Since this is an Early Access my thoughts on the game will change over the course of development but for now I can strongly recomend this game to anyone so it can get the support it needs to further grow.

I think the only major con is memory leaking, and the chunk loading system-(At times the way things are loaded really drains the performanec of the game), and the multiplayer needs a litle attention givin to it.- (Sometimes people cant open doors or pick up itmes on the mp side of the game)

***This review will change as development goes on)

Active devs who interact with the community on their forum and twitter (when not working on the next build) and blog every friday.

The game is currently being built to have its more difficult concepts created and stabilized first (like randomly generating landscapes and randomly generating zombies)so that it will be easier to implement more content later down the line.

So I read the reviews and watch the very decieving videos, which actually make the game look good. But I tell you now I just spent £15 on.Just for me to go onto multiplayer and see one server in the whole ♥♥♥♥ing world. With just three people on it. I joined the game and I was bored and I felt like I miswell have chucked 15 ♥♥♥♥ing pounds in the bin. ♥♥♥♥ game do not buy. I know it's in Alpha but literally no one is playing it, because it is so broken and ♥♥♥♥. Then the guy said he was going off and the server went offline. Then I looked on the server list and there were no more servers.

these devs are hard workers, fixing game-breaking bugs left and right (unlike DayZ which says "want vehicles and for zombies to stop going through walls? heres a pistol", and barricades work very well. id say 8/10, and in the next week, 9/10 for the new update.

It's still early in development and dealing with the expected issues at such stages, but it is definitely worth the buy. This one has a lot of potential and the developers have a good vision for it. Definitely worth supporting, if you enjoy the zombie survival genre.

Review as of 22/10/2014

I have mix feelings about this game. It is kind of immersive but at the same time quite plain. The graphic are not even gmod standard and that game was released years ago. I get that it is still in alpha, but come on, lets be real here, its been slightly over a year since the launch of this game and it still feels like as if nothing was added. Sure there are many updates that added new stuff but that just shows how little content the game had when it was first released on steam.

I wish there was a neither option. I don't recommend the game but at the same time i hope it does well becasue right now, i think funding is probably the biggest issue for them right now. They need to get bettter graphics designers and staffs to optimize the game. The loading in-game is terrible but thats expected in the alpha stage. The combat feels stiff and unresponsive. The meelee is slow and sometimes i have to click twice for it to respond. The gun mechanics is pretty good. I like the idea of loading up the magazines and you literally need to fill each mag with bullets individually. So there's a bit of realism right there. However, the gun play is still stiff and so are the zombies. Their movement is really stiff and too easy to kill when you have a weapon. The need to reduce the amount of ammo loots you can find, or else everything becomes too easy. pretty much the minute you find a gun in the game, there is no point playing anymore because everything becomes a cake walk other then to explore the map. Area generation takes quite a while to load up, sometimes i walk over large areas of emptiness, only for everything to pop up suddenly and get attacked by dogs.

Because the game is still in Alpha, therefore i won't mention too much. They definitely need to add PVP into multiplayer. THe game has quite a lot of bugs and glitches that need to be addressed immediately to help improve gameplay experience. I wouldn't even mind waiting for an update that only focus on fixing bugs and glitches.

Overall, i rate this game a 4/10. Its a gamble to buy this game, but because of your investment in this game, it will help the development future of THE DEAD LINGER.

This review comes from the point of view of an angry consumer who bought a game 2 years ago and expected a playable game.

3/10 This game is dissapointing in a word. It was concieved and seemed like a product that would go far and do well. The way they marketed it to us kickstarters was "The best zombie game you'll ever play" Or "The zombie game all the others should have been" Then they had a list of things they wanted to do, I was extremly excited and hopeful for this game. I helped fund and I was happy to see what happened, The alpha came out and I played it... It was.... depressing... I asked the devs in a forum post if they were going to make the game they promised they assured me it was still so early and they had it all planned. I said to myself "Ok I'll wait." So I waited a year. I came back.. It was almost exactly the same... the game was in terrible shape and made almost no progress. I've tried to give this game time but I'm going to have to tell you all to steer clear. This game should be placed on a scam alert. They promised alot of things YEARS ago and I know the development process takes time but the progress that has been made is shamefull to say the least. They are using an engine for FLASH GAMES when they promised AAA graphics. It's sad to see 2 years of development wasted on a game that was promised to be so good. Currently you can play limited online, Run around in single player and look @ the ♥♥♥♥ty environment and just have a really good time watching your money flushed down a toilet if there was ever a game I wanted a refund for this was it. Save your money guys. Do not buy.

I bought this game on Feb.04.2013, way before it hit Steam and before the engine switch from Ogre to Unity and have followed it closely eversince. Unfortunately I really cannot recommend this game anymore to anyone. It's promise after promise; only to be followed by excuse after excuse.

Back in 2013, when they were switching engines (wich took 6 months without updates) we were told that after the engine change they could dish out content faster, unfortunately that didn't happen. Then the game went to Steam, and again it was promised that more updates would arrive faster. Again it didn't happen. And that's just 2 examples, to be honest I can't count anymore how many times we were promised something (be it an update, more content etc.) only to be followed by an excuse as to why they didn't deliver.

That's what you can expect from Sandswept Studios, promises, promises, promises followed by an inevitable excuse. I feel bad having to give this game a negative review and honestly I WANT the game to succeed, I really do! But at this point all I have seen is excuses and very, very little progress on the game.

I understand it's a small team and that's why I gave them the benefit of the doubt eversince I bought the game in Feb. 2013. However at it's current state, there isn't much gameplay at all, the performance is horrible and the bugs and crashes are even worse. That would be alright for an early access game if issues actually got fixed and content and gameplay was being added. But the updates are too few and too far between to have any meaning and nothing substantial gets fixed/added. At the rate it has been going, The Dead Linger will be finished in 2025.

If you are on the fence about buying The Dead Linger, I'd recommend to keep your money for now and wait a couple of months. You will see exactly what I mean about promises and excuses. If, by then, you are still interested, then by all means buy it. But if you ask me there are far better things to spend your money on.
