The Weekly Dead 38

Hello Survivors and welcome to another edition of The Weekly Dead!

Networking Backpacks and the UI

Somewhat of a joint venture this week, Richard has been working on the networking code for the backpacks, trying to get them and the equipping functions working in multiplayer.

And now for the most complex image we have ever released.

There is a lot going on here, so stay a while and listen.

This is the networking in action. It shows 3 players online, their lower body, upper body, and head animations working properly. Two of them are equipped with swords, one of which is swinging said sword. The red lines are the path the sword takes through the air as it is swung, (which that particular animation is working) coming from the 8 points along the blade that determine a hit. If one of those lines goes through a hit box, it detects that as a hit. You can see through the eyes of all three players here, and, it all works. It's all networked and working online.

The only thing not in this picture is the equip screen itself, but a proper one wasn't put in for this particular demonstration. But it works and it works online. That's what's important.

In a similar venture (well, they both have to do with the backpack), Geoff has been redesigning how the inventory will be laid out.

Of course this is far from a complete image. It's a concept thrown together to get a better idea of how it will look when laid out.

As you can see, this inventory goes "Inventory->Equip Slots->Status" as opposed to our previous one of "Equip Slots->Status->Inventory".

Animation and Rigging

This week Grant has given the zombies new animations, skeleton, and mesh. He's also given the Stray, and Bob UE4 Blueprints for their animations, to allow their animations to be triggered at the right time.

He's also been working on hitboxes and skinning for the zombies.

Atle on the other front has been working on the survivor side of things. Specifically a roll animation for when the player lands in a roll.

Houses

For a more visual feast, we have something from Chaoss.

He's still been stuck in working on the house, adding textures to both the walls and the floor, interior materials, and indoor lighting, for that spooky natural light feel.

Dark

Light

The close up ground textures are finally getting put in! Next: Grass and things!

The Weekly Dead 37

Hello survivors! Welcome to another edition of The Weekly Dead!

More of a coding week, often shown in livestreams. (More on that later)

Housing Development

This week Chaoss has been working more on building construction. As you recall from a previous Weekly Dead, he made (and is making) little modules, pieces of houses so that he can put together more houses more quickly.

I've got a look at a pretty fancy (and untextured) single story house that he made using this system.

From the front.

From the bottom. Showing the layout of rooms.

Inside the building.

I'm personally excited to see all the buildings Chaoss will make. This is the guy who made the farmhouse, and the Leland's.

Hitboxes

This week Grant has been working on hitboxes for the animals and the zombies. These hitboxes cut the models up into pieces so that different limbs, the torso, and the head can be hit independently. This will allow for our system of having to kill zombies with head based damage, as well as different amounts of damage to animals based on where you hit them.

Pictures speak a thousand words though so here.

The four different rabbits were showing different idle animations, the other part of what Grant did this week, and the big guy is our friendly neighborhood mailman zombie. This picture shows the different hitboxes for each limb and pieces of limbs.

This shows the rabbits mid idle animation without the hit boxes in case you were wondering how they were different.

And this is the boar's hitbox.

Richard and the Network

This week Richard's been working on getting survivor animations networked. What this means is that in online games players will be able to see the animations of whatever the other player is doing. Free-look has also been networked, and the upper body and lower body have separate animations, so you can see other players looking around.

After this is completed it'll be getting equipment slots so that you can equip and unequip gear from inside the inventory screen.

"Zag"

Our very own Geoff Keene, also known as "Zag" has been doing a lot as well, mainly centered around death, dying, and damage. (But that's not all)

Specifically, fall damage is implemented and if you fall from too high you can pass out for a few seconds when you splat on the ground. Of course if you land right (crouch/roll) you can mitigate damage.

He's made the death sequence transition smoothly from black, to death screen, to white, to life again.

Like...

...That. With more fade of course.

In addition to all that he's implemented reload types, so weapons that have internal magazines (Shotguns, SKS, and in this case, revolvers) can be loaded in a different way than weapons with detachable magazines. (Semi-auto pistols)

And finally, he got blueprints and base stats for hundreds of items created.

3 Hours in and I got bored. This pales in comparison to the hundreds of hours I have put into stuff like 7 Days to Die and DayZ (Arma2,Arma3 and Stand Alone) and Project Zomboid.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! i dont have that many hours in the game, but you dont really need any. I bought this game back when it first was released on steam and i was interested to see where this game was gonna go. In the beginning i could forgive the game for having many lag issues, little to do, and very mediocre graphics. However, here we are in 2015 (game was released in late 2013) and I still havent seen any big changes besides many engine changes. The developer hasnt released an update in a while and at this point the game is dead. If you want to buy it so you can laugh at it go ahead, but you'll be giving money to a guy who working very little (if at all) on this game. In my opinion this is just another game that goes on the list of games where people make them just to make a quick buck.

where to begin, hmmm ...i read the road map and was impressed with what you were planning on doing...so much so that i invited a few friends to buy into this aswell....soooo....months and months down the line i have seen no improvement on this game AT ALL. yes there are regular updates on the gibber gabber front, saying were gonna do this and we spent all our time doing that, pfft
why then are there so many other games in alpha that are wayyy more playable than this after a few months, let alone a few years.
If the devs have abandoned this already as a lost cause, just have the balls to give us our damn money back..say sorry for wasting our time and get a life.
As far as recomending this game (and i use the term lightly) sup to you, i've learnt to wait alot longer before i buy on steam because of cash cows like this.

10/10 will definatly waste my money on this again O_0

I had bought game after I saw some decent progress.
6 months later I come back and the game engine has changed and they are actually farther behind than when I checked 6 months ago.
How the f*ck is that possible?
O, and you can't play the version they are working on now, even though I paid for a copy of early access.
Valve should refund people's money for this lingering vaporware.

This is the game 7 Days to Die would be if it sat in the dark and ate lead paint for a month an a half.

TDL at least used to have a fun and fascinating procedurally-generated world to explore -- with abysmal graphics and laughable combat, that was enough of a foundation for me to invest in. I figured...whatever happened, at least I had that, right? Well, the developers decided to jettison the sole point of appeal to make this game wholly and thoroughly derivative and mediocre. There's no reason to expect anything that will improve on games already available. If the promise of this game appeals to you, try DayZ, State of Decay, 7 Days, even Dead State or Project Zomboid. None of those have managed to remove the unique qualities of their game.

Bought this game about 2 years ago now? I have maybe played a good 30 minutes because the game is so bad. Don't let even the terrible screen shots fool you. Do not buy this game you will regret it.

I would not recommand this game to anyone anymore, it was a good idea back in 2012, year's later and hardly anything has come of it,game is still sluggish and boring.

I just feel i have wasted my money on a snake oil game.......again.

I guess in a few more years i will come back to see what has come of this game and it's developer's.

Good luck to them, i hope other people are having fun in this game.

I think about the only fun I had while playing this was running and jumping into the big boulders because they made you bounce.

Pros:
+Bouncy boulders.
+For the sake of adding one more pro... the idea for opening/closing doors is cool.

Cons:
+Costs money to find out it's bad. I've had this game for a year and nothing has gotten better.
+The devs seem to start from scratch often, perhaps they aren't very good at planning.
