Potential is just that... potential. Pre-alpha a year ago; potential. Pre-alpha now; potential. What we have here is failure to deliver on a concept. I'm sure Sandswept is giving it their blood, sweat, and tears, but thus far, the potential is far from reality. Now and then I give it another try and play for a half hour or so to see if anything has drastically improved, but it's nearly void of immersive content, glitchy, terribly optimized, and seemingly buggier with each build.

The Sandswept team is great about community relations and sharing the roadmap for the game, and I wish the dev team the best with hope it can turn some of this potential into actual gameplay soon.

Until some proof of delivery is offered up, this game is relegated to the "Not Recommended" category. I hope to change this review to yes someday.

Despite the positivity of the dev team, this game is an utter waste of money in its current state.

They've released a seemingly infinite amount of "updates," none of which make the game especially playable. The animations are garbage, many weapons just plain do not work, the barricading feature they are proud of is utter garbage, and the multiplayer is essentially unplayable.

In one multiplayer game, once we got past the usual "We're in a forest/No, we're in a desolate wasteland" argument, as neither party sees the same thing, after slogging through nothingness and finding a cabin (which exploded into a pile of items when we got close to it), we tried finding a town, only for my friend to be launched into the sun for no reason.

This is particularly frustrating because I can FEEL the potential. This COULD be wonderful. Unfortunately, it's not and I'm skeptical it will be if things keep moving they way they seem to be.

I bought this game because what I read in the update logs looked like something that wanted to step out of the whole survival box, but sadly some things outweigh these thoughts.

First off, my personal favorite Survival game would be one, where you have as many possibilities and actions as in real life, for example moving furniture around to barricade houses and stuff like that. The Dead Linger does have that ability, and some other nice features.

But the game itself runs terribly, I can't run it at 60fps, at the lowest graphic setting, hell I probably don't even have 30fps. It crashes without reasons and you don't really have anything to play. It's just a big sandbox world, where nothing works the way it's supposed to. This isn't a game yet, it's a testing mess.

If they fix the performance issues and fix one problem at a time, I'd recommend this game, just because they seem to understand where survival games need to go to keep being entertaining but thus far: it's a no from me.

They outta call this game "The Development Lingers"
I've had it for a year now and they have done very little to make a game. Don't waste your money. There is patience and then there is taking people's money for no return product. I've seen tons of hand drawn sketches and character models of things like backpacks and sunglasses, and they do look impressive. But somehow the zombies in this game are featurless black sillouette monsters. I dunno man. I feel like I got ripped off by a couple dudes who are trolling for beer money.

TLDR: This is a definite pass for now. Just wait, save your money and watch the progress.

When they said a "no nonsense zombie survival game... just zombies" THEY WERE NOT KIDDING. There's nothing else relevant enough to mention.There's nothing to do in the game. The zombies are no better than the flat NPCs from DOS games of old.

"Memory: 6 GB RAM" requirement... I have 8 with two graphics cards and the frame rate is STILL unplayable (no matter what video setting combination I try in-game or with my hardware). I'm not even sure what it's rendering. Every house is the same (kitchen table, toilet, chair, a mattress) and there's no loot. Hope for loot is worse than a picked-through DayZ server. Framerate is the same indoors/outdoors... so I'm stumped.

From what I've read, it's using the Unity engine and it really shows in the framerate. I think that fact, plus the inability to streamline their code (again, not sure what's being rendered, calculated... whatever) is a great START to my argument on why this is a pass. Throw in no content, no gameplay or a lack of any fundamental reason to play this as a "video game" and you get where I'm at with this.

I really don't like giving any developers any grief. To the developers, keep at it, I'm sure this will eventually be something. I bought a 4-pack, so there's my donation to the cause. My only note is to take some time off, then come back at it with a fresh, unbiased look. Is it fun? Is the engine the right fit for the breadth of gameplay we want our users to experience? I wish you all the luck and success. I hope to check back in a year and just be blown away with a fantastic version of The Dead Linger.

The Dead Linger is one of those alphas you buy, load, and immediately realize you've thrown your hard-earned money into the toilet. The devlogs are more entertaining than the "game" is. Considering that survival zombie games are a dime a dozen, and the incredibly slow pace of this one, I would steer clear of "the developements linger" and get ANY other. Even if it ran above 20 fps, and had new zombie models, it would be "meh" at best.

The Dead Linger is making good progress, I just watched a dev stream the other day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2Bf3l64AqI&list=UUfj2XuooeedCDE8MDNTY_IA, and its looking good. The developers say after this next update (15), the builds will come out quicker than the previous ones. I think this is one of the most promising early access games on Steam to date, and plus the developers are pretty involved with the community, which is good.

Spawned near a farmhouse, found an assault rifle and some ammo, left the farmhouse and went to a small suburban neighborhood. Sun started to set, made a campfire in the upstairs bathroom. Left house through garage, found a bike, rode bike towards another set of houses. Parked bike in the garage of a house, scavenged for food, looked out window saw 50+ zombies heading towards the back of the house. Blocked back door with a couch, zombies decided to come through front door. Tried moving couch in a panic, couldn't move couch, jumped through window and ran for bike. Got bike stuck between two trashcans in garage. Got swarmed by zombies, got off bike and ran. Found a water tower decided to climb to loose the zombies, more zombies came. Shot said zombies, ran out of ammo, jumped off watertower, survived. Got mauled by 4 dogs and 50+ zombies.

10/10 would die again

**EDIT** **Over a month since i posted this, and the game is still unplayable even with the newest hotfixes for Build 15**

STAY AWAY!!! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!

Ive been in this games alpha for 2 years now, and this game is still the same buggy mess it was 2 years ago. I have seen games like Rust, 7 Days to Die,The Forest, Space engineers and many other early access games, update regularly with content whereas The Dead Linger just sits in its same shameful state. When they give a date for an update it is always delayed by months....they initially said an update every 2 weeks, when that turned into 2 months and someone asked on their twitter they responded with a attitude and how they can take as much time as they see fit. These are truly amatuer developers and there are so many better titles out there for $20. This game at this rate will take 10 years to develop, Ive been waiting 2 years and it still looks and plays the same (unplayable and my computer can handle it).

TL;DR Save your money, this game is not worth $5 let alone a full $20, go buy anything but this....you've been warned

I bought this game on Feb.04.2013, way before it hit Steam and before the engine switch from Ogre to Unity and have followed it closely eversince. Unfortunately I really cannot recommend this game anymore to anyone. It's promise after promise; only to be followed by excuse after excuse.

Back in 2013, when they were switching engines (wich took 6 months without updates) we were told that after the engine change they could dish out content faster, unfortunately that didn't happen. Then the game went to Steam, and again it was promised that more updates would arrive faster. Again it didn't happen. And that's just 2 examples, to be honest I can't count anymore how many times we were promised something (be it an update, more content etc.) only to be followed by an excuse as to why they didn't deliver.

That's what you can expect from Sandswept Studios, promises, promises, promises followed by an inevitable excuse. I feel bad having to give this game a negative review and honestly I WANT the game to succeed, I really do! But at this point all I have seen is excuses and very, very little progress on the game.

I understand it's a small team and that's why I gave them the benefit of the doubt eversince I bought the game in Feb. 2013. However at it's current state, there isn't much gameplay at all, the performance is horrible and the bugs and crashes are even worse. That would be alright for an early access game if issues actually got fixed and content and gameplay was being added. But the updates are too few and too far between to have any meaning and nothing substantial gets fixed/added. At the rate it has been going, The Dead Linger will be finished in 2025.

If you are on the fence about buying The Dead Linger, I'd recommend to keep your money for now and wait a couple of months. You will see exactly what I mean about promises and excuses. If, by then, you are still interested, then by all means buy it. But if you ask me there are far better things to spend your money on.

The Dead Linger is a game I've been on the middle with for a long, long time. First let me say, the reason why this is a no isn't because it's bad - but because progress is so painfully slow and small. The game - if completed with all promised features - will be a fantastic one for any zombie survival enthusiast.

I have been in the community since the original kickstarter, so don't let the 100 minutes of playtime fool you. The Dead Linger has promised such a large amount of things that it's becoming hard to believe it will happen. The basic game functions are there: looting, building, barricading, food, et cetera. Even the multiplayer isn't half bad, being fairly optimized with little lag. But we get a large update approximately four to five times a year. And these large updates usually include small fixes and one partially implemented game mechanic.

However, it should be said that updates STILL happen - and we are even kept informed on these updates (Screen shots, information, weekly blogs from the devs, et cetera.) This isn't quite like the other indie games that got so popular and so much money at the beginning that the devs just half ♥♥♥ things. They are trying and it's obvious the amount of effort they put into it.

Personally, I recommend not buying this unless you are a complete and total early access person like I am. This game is, to me, a 50/50 chance of turning out how we wanted or not. So for now, I do not recommend it to anyone who wants a game that definitely has a future.

Check out Project Zomboid for now if you want a good survival zombie game (Although it's not 1st person.)

I first saw this game quite some time ago and was immediately put away by how utterly ugly it looked.
Today I was just simply looking for more open-world games to buy and stumbled upon this again. Let me just say that I didn't even recognize it.

So far, I'm really enjoying it. Guns and ammo are too plentiful, but it's always a treat to hunt for green and blue rarity items. (just found a Mosin!) For this being in Alpha, it really shows a lot of promise. Developers are also quite nice and active, as I could tell from creating a thread asking about unloading guns and got a response shortly after from a dev.

Overall, yes, I'd recommend. But only buy the game if you're willing to wait for a lot of features.

Early Access Alpha Build 14 "Eye Candy Saga" review:
i monitored this game closely since its first appereance on steam. i love survival/simulation games, so i decided to keep eye on it since it showed huge potential and amazing idea in its first days of public release. the dead linger is trying to capture world of romero zombies, world of zombie apocalypse from classics in literature and cinema, and the walking dead graphic novel as well. so expect slow zombies, hordes of zombies walking through fields, you can barricade yourself inside thehouse, nail doors, windows, move furniture, chop trees, hunt, in fact you can interact with everything you see.

in those early days game looked pretty ugly, but i always liked goal they set for mechanics of the game and for me it looked like it could be in future something like arma mechanics (which is my favourite game series of all time and i play video games since '95). but back then it had some perormance issues so i decided to wait only a little more. build 14 was released and it brought massive performance boost and enormous graphics update which made game look so beautiful. so i got the game and my first experience with it was mind-blowing. those gameplay videos you may watch on youtube didnt catch 1% of atmosphere i experienced in my first few hours of gameplay.

you'll probably spawn near the small town in which you have everything you need for freshspawn. or nearby in the woods and you'll have to make your way through zeds and rabid dogs to make it to your first shelter trying to find rifle and food. or bicycle. i spawned near the town, made some loot, clothes, food, weapons and similar. so night came slowly and i decided to camp in house until morning since huge horde of zombies was approaching my house, and its not wise to try to fight through it at night. i saw something big moving fast through horde which scared me a bit. it was my first encounter with a deer :) my flashlight battery went out so all i could hear hiding in pitchdark house were zombies moan, banging on the doors and windows, and that familiar nostalgic atmosphere music from classic movies. very nice feeling to experience such thing in a game, specially in this much early state. my battery recharged in meantime but i heared crashing of the windows so i panicked and went upstairs, pulled furniture to doors to barricade myself from zombies. slowly sun started coming up, looked through the window and saw my bike underneath. zombies broke into the house and were in front of my doors, bashing it slowly. i jumped out of window, got on bicycle and rode out of that town towards sunrise :)

so this is pretty much the goal of the game at this point. trying to survive, find some loot which will help you at it and make yourself nice story experience with it. next build, build 15 will bring much more game content, so there'll be much more stuff to do. yes, there are still some improvements needed in performance, textures and mechanics. and yes, there is not very much to do right now. but still, this game is very early in develpment, by devs calculations it's not even 30% finished. for now it is like testing demo, but every update will bring us more and more stuff until this becomes game which we all dreamed about.

map in this game is real world-size map, an huge setting. map generates itself as you play and move about. so meeting another player by accident is a very small chance :D for now game does not have classic massive pvp servers, but you can play with friends. or you can generate solo world and trying to survive on your own. they plan to add friendly, companion and hostile NPC as well in near future, also lots of cars (for which you'll have to find gas to run), other survival aspects like crafting, fishing, bulding on bigger scale, also different scales of pvp modes, and much much more. full roadmap and progress untill now you can check on the dead linger site.

i forgot to mention some amazing locations, like huge prison. i swear i lived through that joy of walking dead comic crew when they stumbled upon that prison :D at first i thought there are just random little towns generating as you make your way through the world. then i remembered my friend told me he found nice loot at firestation (or police station). so i decided to go further this time to try to find other stuff, found some nice farms, cornfields, markets, little towns, even some evil deadish cabin in the woods. but when i saw this huge prison, with tall towers for snipers, and double protective fence, i was like "wow this is same as walking dead prison from comic books" :D i immediately climbed on top of the gate tower and role-played andrea with sniper for a few minutes lol this is my home now, i will not leave this prison unil i ran out of food. and there are some big buildings inside the prison, so i hope there's enough food. and i pray i could defend it from zombies and will not attract some huge horde. also i need to clear whole prison from zombies, little by little, as i am alone. but i spend nights at tower for now, safest place really, one way up, but sadly one way down too. i cant wait to play online something like this, to take over prison or something similar with friends and defend it from governors and bandits :)

everyone who can should support these developers, they are doing nice job, and trying to bring us ultimate zombie survival experience which you could only see on screens or read about until now. but remember, this is very early stage of the game, so dont expect full game and everything working as you wish. this is just for testing, but i am having hell of a time with TDL even now.

Warning right now I am writing this after playing build 15 with hotfix A.

Right now this game has tons of potential. If the devolpers meet their goals that they laid out in the road map then this game will be one of the best zombie games out. Unfortunately the bugs really bring this game down. Once the graphical errors are fixed I could then reccomend this game but untill then I would not spend the 15 dollars the devolper is asking for. The bugs really take you out of the game, not very immersive. When you walk trees will come in and out of existance, grass and many other objects dont spawn more than 5 feet infront of you so you are constanly surronded by a circle of objects that go away after moving. Multiplayer does not work, the characters have glitched models and players easily become invisible and out of sync after fighting zombies. The devolpers seem to put a lot of effort into this game so if you can deal with the bugs go ahead and buy it because in the future it will be a great game but right now it is to buggy for me to recomend.

Every time an update is released, I jump into the game to try to check things out. I can't though. 1 year later, this game is still as unplayable as it was when it first launched on early access. Given how long it's taken and how little progress has been made, this project is simply too big/ambitious for this team of developers. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone in it's current state. I hope it does get finished, but realistically it probably won't happen. Save your money.

First spawned in a small town where I ran into a home for shelter against the zeds, I found a shotgun inside along with some food and a jacket. Left to scavenge for other useful things, I ended up finding more shotgun ammo along with a crossbow before getting trapped inside the house by a horde, used couches and refrigerators to barricade myself inside but had to escape through the top window. I cut down a couple trees with my hatchet while exhausting the rest of my crossbow ammo, the horde managed to catch up to me and I had to leave the town via bicycle where I found another horde that made the other one look like a joke, fled to a nearby forest where I made a fireplace before being caught and devoured by the horde that surrounded me in a ring of death.

I am more than willing to rewrite this review once more updates come out. I bought this game for my boyfriend and I because we both love zombie games and this one looked like it could be fun. I know that this is in Alpha and I didn't expect it to be perfect... I expected bugs and I knew that the game that I was buying could totally change by the time they were finished with it. What I did expect though was when I paid 20 dollars each for this game that it would be somewhat playable. I was reading reviews from a year ago and saw people complaining about it not being playable .. that it was pretty much broken.. but I figured after a year that they would have released updates that would fix some problems. Anyways.. loading up the game for the first time everything seemed fine. We both loaded into a prison and I was excited.. finding a backpack and a gun right away I went to kill my first zombie. It all seemed good until we left the prison. We found a farm down the road.. I went to search the house while my boyfriend searched the barn. While searching the house, my boyfriend ended up falling through the land outside and got stuck floating somewhere underneath the map. He logged out and logged back in and it seemed to fix it.. so it was w.e. just a bug. But then when we were leaving he said my body was still back at the farm and he couldnt see me anymore right next to him.. it was like I was lagged out but I wasnt because I could still kill zombies and chop down trees. So I logged out and logge back in which seemed to fix it. Then when we were walking down the road my boyfriend dissapeared into the ground and he said I was floating above him in the air and that he was actually on the road. We were seeing two different things. We found bikes which were difficult to ride and my boyfriend while riding just looked like he was standing up. Not a big deal.. what was a big deal is that half the time our weapons would just stop working and the zombies would be able to hit us and we couldnt kill them. Plus, zombies can hit you from pretty far away even though you are too far to hit them. Some other things is most of the time things don't render. I spent like 15 minutes walking through what I thought was a field and then all of a sudden everything rendered and I was on a road surrounded by forest. Last thing which is not a big deal.. but I was excited when finding clothes and hats and everything in the game only to find out they dont show up. Your character looks the same regardless of what you are wearing. Right now though.. the game really is unplayable. There are WAY too many bugs atm. Im really hoping they don't give up on this game.. it could be really cool. Plus I would be a little mad that I wasted twenty bucks on something that I can't even play.

Every build, they say it's optimized. Every build, it runs more poorly on my machine. If I buy a game because I have the specs to run it, and I can run it when I buy it, updating it 'til I can't run it isn't doing me any good. The optimization for this game is very poor, the graphics are VERY bad, and the gameplay, although it has some clever ideas, is weak. The guns don't feel right, the animations aren't very good, melee is floaty and feels downright messy to play with. The physics manipulation is so weak that you can get stuck trying to open and close doors, because you have to drag them around. Furniture is theoretically used to block doors, but zombies phase through walls, so why bother? (note: supposedly fixed, but the motion blur in the new update was so nauseating I didn't get a chance to try that out. Plus my FPS on this newest update were so low zombies were moving towards me like the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who) To top it all off, the open world feels very empty, with huge stretches of nothing but empty terrain and the occasional zombie between POI's. Which is realistic, I'll grant you, but the key to making a realistic survival game is realizing that it still needs to be fun, too.

I've given this game several builds to develop. Each time I played for a painful hour or so and said "Oh well, it's alpha. It'll improve." It really hasn't. Perhaps these improvements are still on the horizon - in which case I'll try to remember to come back and update this review. As it stands, the community is good, the developers are really nice, and they have good ideas, but the implementation is just pitiful. I cannot name a single system in this game that actually works properly. I am normally all for early access, and I want to support this developer, but I'd say give this game a few more months before considering it.

Would be better if there was something to do beisdes eat. The zombies don't pose a threat, I like the version of zombies. slow and numerous, but they have bad detection, path finding, and AI in general. Theres nothing else to do in the generic "towns", farms, and prisons. It has potential, just put off on buying it for now.
