First spawned in a small town where I ran into a home for shelter against the zeds, I found a shotgun inside along with some food and a jacket. Left to scavenge for other useful things, I ended up finding more shotgun ammo along with a crossbow before getting trapped inside the house by a horde, used couches and refrigerators to barricade myself inside but had to escape through the top window. I cut down a couple trees with my hatchet while exhausting the rest of my crossbow ammo, the horde managed to catch up to me and I had to leave the town via bicycle where I found another horde that made the other one look like a joke, fled to a nearby forest where I made a fireplace before being caught and devoured by the horde that surrounded me in a ring of death.

The Dead Linger is a game I've been on the middle with for a long, long time. First let me say, the reason why this is a no isn't because it's bad - but because progress is so painfully slow and small. The game - if completed with all promised features - will be a fantastic one for any zombie survival enthusiast.

I have been in the community since the original kickstarter, so don't let the 100 minutes of playtime fool you. The Dead Linger has promised such a large amount of things that it's becoming hard to believe it will happen. The basic game functions are there: looting, building, barricading, food, et cetera. Even the multiplayer isn't half bad, being fairly optimized with little lag. But we get a large update approximately four to five times a year. And these large updates usually include small fixes and one partially implemented game mechanic.

However, it should be said that updates STILL happen - and we are even kept informed on these updates (Screen shots, information, weekly blogs from the devs, et cetera.) This isn't quite like the other indie games that got so popular and so much money at the beginning that the devs just half ♥♥♥ things. They are trying and it's obvious the amount of effort they put into it.

Personally, I recommend not buying this unless you are a complete and total early access person like I am. This game is, to me, a 50/50 chance of turning out how we wanted or not. So for now, I do not recommend it to anyone who wants a game that definitely has a future.

Check out Project Zomboid for now if you want a good survival zombie game (Although it's not 1st person.)

I bought this game on Feb.04.2013, way before it hit Steam and before the engine switch from Ogre to Unity and have followed it closely eversince. Unfortunately I really cannot recommend this game anymore to anyone. It's promise after promise; only to be followed by excuse after excuse.

Back in 2013, when they were switching engines (wich took 6 months without updates) we were told that after the engine change they could dish out content faster, unfortunately that didn't happen. Then the game went to Steam, and again it was promised that more updates would arrive faster. Again it didn't happen. And that's just 2 examples, to be honest I can't count anymore how many times we were promised something (be it an update, more content etc.) only to be followed by an excuse as to why they didn't deliver.

That's what you can expect from Sandswept Studios, promises, promises, promises followed by an inevitable excuse. I feel bad having to give this game a negative review and honestly I WANT the game to succeed, I really do! But at this point all I have seen is excuses and very, very little progress on the game.

I understand it's a small team and that's why I gave them the benefit of the doubt eversince I bought the game in Feb. 2013. However at it's current state, there isn't much gameplay at all, the performance is horrible and the bugs and crashes are even worse. That would be alright for an early access game if issues actually got fixed and content and gameplay was being added. But the updates are too few and too far between to have any meaning and nothing substantial gets fixed/added. At the rate it has been going, The Dead Linger will be finished in 2025.

If you are on the fence about buying The Dead Linger, I'd recommend to keep your money for now and wait a couple of months. You will see exactly what I mean about promises and excuses. If, by then, you are still interested, then by all means buy it. But if you ask me there are far better things to spend your money on.

If you want to PLAY a zombie survival game RIGHT NOW ,I do not recommend this !
Gameplay is already awesome but ends withing 10 hours (maximum) ! Why :

Not because the game is not finished yet because the Dev's were developing other stuff:
- Changing the WHOLE ♥♥♥♥ING ENGINE
- Adding the first & very basic Crafting System (Hunting ,Logs ,Meat Cooking)
- Better melee combat ,a Quality/Fix Update ,the first vehicle ,a Dogzombie ,basic clothing !
- A Graphics Update (now the game does not look like ♥♥♥♥ anymore)
- ZOMBIE VARIATION WITH CLOTHING (Coming in Build 15 ,which should get released 3 days after my post)

When will a content Update come out ?
BUILD 16 (Citys ,Enemy Tanks & more...)

Why do I recommend this ?
This game has very high potential and there is nothink like this out there !
A infinite zombie survival world ,100% freedom ,0% Blocks and Mining ♥♥♥♥)
Get it 10$ cheaper xD ,this is an investigation !

Review as of 22/10/2014

I have mix feelings about this game. It is kind of immersive but at the same time quite plain. The graphic are not even gmod standard and that game was released years ago. I get that it is still in alpha, but come on, lets be real here, its been slightly over a year since the launch of this game and it still feels like as if nothing was added. Sure there are many updates that added new stuff but that just shows how little content the game had when it was first released on steam.

I wish there was a neither option. I don't recommend the game but at the same time i hope it does well becasue right now, i think funding is probably the biggest issue for them right now. They need to get bettter graphics designers and staffs to optimize the game. The loading in-game is terrible but thats expected in the alpha stage. The combat feels stiff and unresponsive. The meelee is slow and sometimes i have to click twice for it to respond. The gun mechanics is pretty good. I like the idea of loading up the magazines and you literally need to fill each mag with bullets individually. So there's a bit of realism right there. However, the gun play is still stiff and so are the zombies. Their movement is really stiff and too easy to kill when you have a weapon. The need to reduce the amount of ammo loots you can find, or else everything becomes too easy. pretty much the minute you find a gun in the game, there is no point playing anymore because everything becomes a cake walk other then to explore the map. Area generation takes quite a while to load up, sometimes i walk over large areas of emptiness, only for everything to pop up suddenly and get attacked by dogs.

Because the game is still in Alpha, therefore i won't mention too much. They definitely need to add PVP into multiplayer. THe game has quite a lot of bugs and glitches that need to be addressed immediately to help improve gameplay experience. I wouldn't even mind waiting for an update that only focus on fixing bugs and glitches.

Overall, i rate this game a 4/10. Its a gamble to buy this game, but because of your investment in this game, it will help the development future of THE DEAD LINGER.

Okay, first and foremost, just wanna say, I LOVE THIS GAME!! It's exactly what I have been looking for: a freeform, sandbox, open world zombie survival game. However, having said that, there are a few things you need to know about the game before buying it.

This game is in early alpha development. This means that the game IS NOT FINISHED YET. It has plenty of bugs, glitches, and unfinished systems/functions. Some things may seem a bit barebones. Basically, the game is not finished yet, indeed far from it (the finished release date is 2016 I believe!), so if you are looking for a finished, polished product, look elsewhere, or wait till 2016 and come back.

Now, on to all the MANY things I adore about this game: I think the barricading system is absolutely awesome. The ability to settle down in literally any structure, and then create a formidable defense system around it is so intriguing to me. For instance, I began my game in a small, ranch style house, and boarded up the doors and windows, and pushed some furniture against the front door. After scavenging around for a while, I found myself wanting to upgrade to a larger home, so I found a two-story building, and again, boarded up the exits. This time, I also constructed a makeshift fence around the house by driving posts into the ground and then nailing plywood boards up between them. All in all, the barricading system is awesome, and according to the developer's roadmap, they aren't even halfway finished with it yet. The combat is still pretty raw, with scoping being the only reliable way to hit things when using a ranged weapon (even at point blank I couldn't hit a zombie in the head with my pistol), but I'm sure that is something that will be fine tuned. The whole concept of the game is great, and something that is so different from any other zombie game I have played.

So, to summarize in a few words: Great game, but not finished, so don't buy unless you're okay with playing something that is a work in progress. (Still completely playable as is, just not completely fine tuned yet!)

7/10 for what it is
11/10 for what I think it will wind up being

Alright, this game is still taking it's baby steps, but for baby steps they are pretty damn good. The occasional bug and glitch is to be expected, but in my short time i didn't experience anything game-breaking. There isn't a whole lot to do, but by far my favorite part is the free-form barricading/building. Just get a hammer, some boards, and boom, you've got yourself a barricade. I hope this feature gets upgraded as well, especially since carrying one board at a time can be time consuming.

All in all, it's a game that is still in progress, so people expecting a ton of play-time can just wait until more updates come out, but i suggest buying it and supporting the game, because this game has a metric ♥♥♥♥-ton of great potential. Just give it time to blossom.

Oh, and I love the guy who does the update trailers, he's pretty funny. Hope that love life gets a bit more interesting for ya.

this game is going to have everything that has been lacking in all zombie games that ive played. Im a zombie game fanatic, n none of them hav wat this game will. Dont compare to 7 days tho, both are different in their own special way. Anyways, you can either wait for more stuff to be put in, or buy it and support the pplz makin it. The devs talk to u directly, i got a msg from zag, the founder of the game himself in less than a day. Jus read wat they r putn into the game on their website, ull b jus as excited as I am. Jus dont buy it expectn much yet, but they do weekly updates n they rly spend time in each game update.

This game is the epitome of Alpha. The base of the game is laid out, but there's constantly new major updates making the game feel completely new. The graphics don't look all that great at the moment, and it doesn't run all that great at the moment, but that's the thing. AT THE MOMENT. Optimizations are constantly happening, and graphical updates and additions are as well.

Granted I can't tell you how the final product will be for certain, but I personally would reccomend getting this purely for the savings and to track development as time goes on. It's got enough ambition and skill behind it that I believe it will end up in an amazing final product.

Buy it now. It literally is going to be the best zombie survival ever. The Developers keep you updated every day on twitter and they release dev notes every friday.
This game is in ALPHA stage. Again, ALPHA.
It is not close to being completed, which is a good thing.

I have to say that this is a very exciting game.
I spawned in the middle of a town, and I went to look for supplies. I later found a HUGE horde of zombies just in the forest, and I messed with them and then peddled back home to my base.

Little did i know that they will FOLLOW YOU.
I ended up barely escaping with my life that night. Watching about 50+ zombies come for you is amazing. When build 15 comes out, it just gets better. Better zombie AI and zombie clothes, new shaders and new items and buildings and....

Mulitplayer is also a big thing. It may not be in the best shape right now, but in their recent Dev Vlog Video, Geoff said that it will get better in the next couple of builds. There will be a specific build focusing on it, so don't you worry. It is awesome to be able to play a game with free barracading, legit scavaging, and hordes of zombies with your friends.
He has also said that Build 15 will be out in the next coming week or so.

These guys have done a great job, and it's heading in the right direction.

Would I recommend this game to my friends and family?
Already have.
And we play every friday.

This game is #3 on the Top 5 online survival horror games of 2014 for a reason. You can do the same things other games provide but have an actual chance making it in the world. Some Lingerer's have personalities that make them unique. They don't jump through walls, or hit you from a block away and you don't have to worry about people killing you (in your server) at the same time. Reason being, if you die, nobody can take the items off your body, only you can retrieve them, a brilliant idea from the minds of Sandswept. The Lingerers will climb, but say they are climbing the stairs to get to you in a house. Shut the door on the Lingerer's face and he's stuck outside banging on the door. The devs are always working on the game, they keep players more informed and up to date than other zombie games and their message is clear and the game allows the player to grow with it.

(Review as of 10/27/2014 Build 14) Not the best game at the moment, still a lot of issues, and there isn't too much to do. However when you're playing with friends it is fun and the radomization of the world, once it gets better, will make this game have some amazing replayability. Some pros and cons so far:

Pros:
-Zombies (Surprise)
-Some Crafting implemented
-Basic Barricading
-Multiplayer
-HUGE Randomized world
-Really good community and the devs do a VERY good job of keeping people up to speed

Cons:
-Some pretty large fps issues which can render the game unplayable
-Not that much variety in buildings yet
-Zombies are boring looking
-Zombie animations are boring and lacking
-Slow updates

There are more for each, of course, however I don't really want to waste too much time writing this. Overall the game is fun while you're playing with friends for sure. But at the moment (as of build 14) there really isn't that much to do in the game and nothing to really keep you playing. However what the devs have planned and from what I've seen from the new builds that pop out this game is going to be phenomonal upon full release. So unless you really want to help the devs money wise and report bugs, then I would wait for a couple more builds to come (there is a lot of content coming in Builds 15-18). They did say that after Build 15 releases the builds would start coming out faster.

So the real question is "Should I buy this game?" and my answer to that is not right now. Like I said I would wait for a couple more builds to come out while they fix stability and fps issues and release more content (Cities, the start of the military AI, more props, more animals, water etc.). Based off of what I've seen from the devs and the improvement from build to build I'm going to recommend this game for anyone that wants to help this game develop. The devs are awesome and what their small team is capable of is amazing. By far my favorite early access game I have, and the one I'm most excited about when a new build is coming.
