Hello survivors! Welcome to another edition of The Weekly Dead!

The VLOG

Before we get to the rest of the Weekly Dead, it is my solemn duty to ensure that everyone watches the VLOG Geoff created. This VLOG answers several frequently asked questions, including some hard hitting ones. I feel that it is a VLOG that must be watched... Or, listened to, rather.

Trees and Bushes

Over the past week Chaoss has been working on trees and bushes. Specifically he has finished all of the bushes and pine trees. In his madness Chaoss has plans to fill the world with many different forest types. Chaoss also plans to fill Pepper Valley's terrain for the initial release.





The above image includes all of the bushes and the pine trees. The shaders in both of the previous images have been hand tweaked by Chaoss himself in a process he calls "Chaoss-ifying".



In the screenshot immediately preceding this line, we see only one type of tree, but we must remember that it is not the number of types of trees that is important, but what goes into them. The above image is both a test of the procedural tree generation, and the alpha-to-coverage tree shader, which is essentially taking the transparency in the grass and leaf (or in this case, pine needle) textures and using it to blend the foliage edges together.

Weapon Values

In addition to recording that VLOG post at the top of this week's Weekly Dead, Geoff has been setting up proper damage and durability values for the melee weapons. Geoff has completed about half of them so far. These values are placeholder and based on a the idea of zombies requiring X amount of damage to their heads before re-death. Far from finished, these values must first be tested and balanced, especially where PvP is concerned.

More Inventory

Richard is still hard at work making sure the inventory system in multiplayer is air-tight and works smoothly. While working on the inventory system Richard has also been doing a bit of debug work on Unreal 4.8.0 Preview 2. TDL is now fully integrated into 4.8!

Grant

Grant is gallivanting around Europe this week, and even stopped by to say hello to Chaoss in London! He'll be back in awhile with more animation and rigging things, but he finished up the majority of the clothing work for Build 15-UE4 before he left. Thanks Grant! Enjoy your holiday!

This is the game 7 Days to Die would be if it sat in the dark and ate lead paint for a month an a half.

TDL at least used to have a fun and fascinating procedurally-generated world to explore -- with abysmal graphics and laughable combat, that was enough of a foundation for me to invest in. I figured...whatever happened, at least I had that, right? Well, the developers decided to jettison the sole point of appeal to make this game wholly and thoroughly derivative and mediocre. There's no reason to expect anything that will improve on games already available. If the promise of this game appeals to you, try DayZ, State of Decay, 7 Days, even Dead State or Project Zomboid. None of those have managed to remove the unique qualities of their game.

The main reason why I bought this game, is because this game originally promised a large, procedurally generated world. Where you can craft things, build, and survive.

After like 3 years of development, they've managed to switch the engines three times. They've also now removed the promised procedurally generation feature from the game completely. (which was the main reason I bought it)

Overall, this game has made 0 progress over three years of development. Don't buy it.

I think about the only fun I had while playing this was running and jumping into the big boulders because they made you bounce.

Pros:
+Bouncy boulders.
+For the sake of adding one more pro... the idea for opening/closing doors is cool.

Cons:
+Costs money to find out it's bad. I've had this game for a year and nothing has gotten better.
+The devs seem to start from scratch often, perhaps they aren't very good at planning.

Like someone said in this forum community about some early acess projects:
"your money, your choice, our profit, their trash".
This is the rule apllied to The Dead Linger.
Six or seven months without updating. Engine changed, misleading features, barely playable.
I could keep going but i wont.

I got this game when it came out, before it was on steam. It was pretty ♥♥♥♥, but I hoped it would be better in the future. I played it for the first time since then today, and it feels like nothing has changed. Sometimes zombies do nothing when you shoot them, controls are clunky, FPS is constantly bad, etc. Don't buy this game.

Been following since the game was just a discussion on the forums, and I'm let down..

I appreciate the effort the devs are going to to do this right, but holy high damn - this just keeps dragging out.

As of writing this, SandSwept are working on getting the Unreal Engine4 build up to scrap - this includes:
  • no more procedural generation - I'm not too fussed about this, as long as the game becomes involving and provides the zombie survival simulation that's promised I'll be happy
  • recoding the entire game.....again - because who can really make appropriate decisions on engine changes
  • building new art assets - woo, new art assets! Mah grafix!!

    and the best for last

  • waiting for all of this to come together so we can play in an area that's going to be something like 1/20 (at most) of the full game world

    SO - where does that leave the players?

    Frustrated to hell.

    I understand what they're going for. They want to make a good game and at stage of development is the best time to get their crap together - hopefully for the last time.



    The UE4 engine change and the removal of procedural generation is going to provide quicker build cycles, better graphics, a more functional game, and a better presentation for the devs to work in.

    So when's all this meant to be delivered?

    March 2015....

    Yup.



    I would really love to recommend this game... I really would. I'd love for the devs to have all the money they could get their hands on to hire more people and get this release polished and to a playable state so we can get playing and they can get to finishing off the rest of the world.

    but.... I can't do that. That's $20 of someone's money for a potential investment. This game might not even reach a polished state. I'm optimistic, it looks like SandSwept have got their ♥♥♥♥ together this time.. But I guess all this sums up to

I'm just going to come out and say it. I loved this game back when i thought i was going to be getting something more interesting, but due to many changes and false advertising yep i said false advertising i DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU BUY THIS AT ALL, RIGHT NOW. lets start with why i loved this game. the world was almost endless, which was a huge selling point for me unlike project zomboid which i would marry if it was legal does have a limit to where you could travel as of right now, what the dead linger was telling me, it was huge and limitless and also random every time you play the game, but it's no longer like that it's reduced to 360 kilometers across, very much reduced however the randomness is still in which i like. i could go on and on about how bad this game is but i do want this game to succeed but now with three different engine changes and the money to develop this running out, i’m afraid the dead won’t be lingering for long.

Sadly I have only 9.5 hrs in this game. What is worse is I can't believe that I have so many hours in the game. I have owned this for close to 2 yrs, in that time the game has seen little change. I checked this game out about a month ago. What I saw was the zombie still look about the same as 2 years ago. There are still roads that end into nothing. There is a small part of the map that has some houses. Probally more if I cared to explore.
I will some my review up to something any true PC Gamer can understand. I thought that DayZ Standalone was a bad game. Sadly this game makes the SA look like it is done.
Now I am not bashing the Dev. I am merely stating my opinion. I was looking forward to this being farther along. Oh well, another 19.99 wasted. I hope the Dev at least paid there rent with the money I feel was stolen from me.

I've had this game a little over 6 months, when I got it, it was reasonably buggy, but playable. In the time that I've owned it, somehow they made the game completely unplayable. Bugs are everywhere, zombies walk through walls, and I don't care what specs you have on your PC, you will not go above 10 FPS ever.

I bought this game to support the development of an interesting sounding title. It's utter, utter ♥♥♥♥.

To make matters worse the devs have now removed the main selling point. 'The Dead Linger is set in a procedurally, randomly generated open world. No two people's worlds will ever look the same.' Yeh, that's gone.

Save your money. Buy another game. Buy a pizza. Just don't buy this POS.
