The Weekly Dead 33



Hello Survivors!This week I've got some good technical information and some great terrain shots for you to view.

I should get this out of the way, a quote from our glorious leader Geoff "Zag" Keene about an estimation of the release of the opt-in.

I just simply don't have one. We are diving into a new engine with new ways of doing things, and new tools at our disposal. Anything we give right now (such as that February estimate we gave earlier that didn't pan out) could and most likely would be completely wrong.

So with that popular question answered for now, onto the goodies!

Weapon Systems



Here we have an example of Geoff using UE4's Blueprint feature to make TDL's weapon systems. This in particular is showing the system for guns and the difference between full auto, and burst fire weapons. In this example, primary fire is using the full-auto/burst fire function, and alt-fire is semi-auto. It's a comprehensive system for swapping out weapons, checking which ones you have, and the details like ammo and firing mode.

Digital Wizardry

On the programming side of things we've been digging in.

Richard is currently working on the inventory, including dropping items, collecting items, and moving items around the inventory. After that comes getting equipping weapons and clothing up and working.

Grant is working on rig placement, re-targeting the animations to the new rig, as well as adding sockets which allows equipment to be placed on the character.

When combined with Richard and Chaoss's code will get the equipment and weapon system set up.

Chaoss has also been doing a lot of work on the terrain (more on that in a bit) including world tiles.

Basically, it will now be much easier for Zag to paint rocks and trees on the landscape.

The World

The most visual part of this Weekly Dead, Chaoss's other work on terrain includes making sure each area of Pepper Valley has a unique feel to it, in the name of maximum variety. You can see it detailed here.









Item Corner

We've got a few interesting and awesome images to show off this week, and the art team is hard at work making more.



An AT Launcher you'll need for taking out those pesky Sirens, and pretty much anything else.



The Satchel Charge has beautiful new textures now. It's almost a shame that it explodes.

And to top it off we have a man wielding a sword...A sword is an Item so it can be under this header!



The textures on this one are just placeholder ones Grant plugged in while he waits on the official ones from Chaoss, but I personally hope Chaoss keeps that boxer briefs/ankle socks combo.

Virtual Noses
You read that right, based on a Gamasutra article that was based on a study about VR we've decided that it is necessary for a virtual nose to be coded in for VR headset users.

Hello Survivors!

If you're like me, you've probably been wondering where the Weekly Dead has been. Well Jenny has had a lot come up and has been really busy, too busy in fact. So now I've been asked to take over her Community Manager role and write the Weekly Dead posts in her stead.

Who am I you ask? I am Christopher Howell(AKA Howell2010), and this is The Weekly Dead.

Digital Wizardry
As always you can get nearly daily updates of what our team is up to by checking out our twitter @thedeadlinger but for a summary, since PAX when you last heard anything, our programmers have been working on everything from zombie-player interaction, zombie awareness, zombie spawning, multiplayer, inventory, object interaction, tile load/store (which means zombies and items dropped in a "tile" will remain when you leave and return).

Essentially, a lot of the mechanics to get it at least back up to the playable state.

Chaoss meanwhile has been working on optimizing trees so that we can have truly vast forests without melting your computers.

Item Art
The art team has still been chugging away. A few new things to show off starting with one untextured thing.



You probably won't find any of these laying around. Might have to improvise one.


For when you want to kill something on the other side of something... Or around a corner.


Cause writing notes is an important skill. Almost as important as reading them.


For people who can't/couldn't be bothered with writing.

Where Art And Programming Mix

Got a few things from our rigger too. Take a look at this IK foot placement.

See how he has one foot on the step and one off, both planted firmly on their respective surfaces? That's IK Foot Placement.



A bunch of new house designs, both lower and middle income, and 2 kinds of Swerts. That's twice the Swerts we had before!

i wouldnt waste my money on this piece of crap. its ugly, its clunky to play, its buggier than a volkswagon dealership, and its just plain boring. and as you can see by my profile, i waste my money on a lot of crap games. this one actually causes the smell of dog crap to come out of my computer when i even roll my mouse over its name in my library.

First off, of all my reviews, this is my first Thumbs Down. this review will be updated if things change, but as-is, this will be cancelled before it's ever close to being finished. save your money and run fast, run far.

Got this back in 2013, it went from a very plain buggy mess to a bloated unplayable trainwreck that now runs at like 4fps and heats up my cpu and graphics card. when first purchased, it was playable, albeit very buggy, lots of clipping, lots of falling through the map,now 2-3 engines later they claim it runs smoother than ever,when that's simply not the case. I have an up to date system I built and upgrade myself that plays any triple A title with full settings with ease so this should be cake.

It doesn't help the guy doing their Developers log would rather cheerfully tell us how great it is and tell jokes which is obviously shilling to sell more copies before they tank the project (Because, oh yes... I got a new pop up with a notice about how they reserve the right to stop development.) So it's pretty obvious this is either an ambitious company that bit off more than they could chew, or a total scam with me leaning towards scam because they keep pushing out useless updates that really do nothing to make it playable unless flannel shirts for the zombies is actually a priority, while they keep putting out cheerful videos about how great it all is hoping to sell just another few copies before pulling the plug.

I feel bad because I talked a friend into buying it so we could play as it develped and we got to run around laughing at the bugs before the patch that made multiplayer unusable, which was a couple patches before the entire game became unplayable when they switched to one of their "oh so much better" engines which makes my vid card temp spike near 100 degrees. (Far Cry 4 doesn't even do that... it plays at a smooth 60 degrees.) So I might have helped them milk $20 out of a friend, but maybe I can steer more people away because honestly, I'm kind of ticked about this.

It's a shame because on paper, this could have been a great game, but it's been in alpha so long it's pretty obvious this is going nowhere.

Well, when it worked there honestly wasn't a whole lot to like. cloned identical zombies, choppy clumsy combat, bare untextured buildings, the only plus side was the utopia they promised. in the vid they demonstrated building and fortifying houses, in-game it didn't exist. it used to be an enormous map you could travel for hours in, now the footprint's been reduced to a fraction of that size,

Seriously, just save your money til it's done or canned because $20 2 years ago for a game that went from meh to unplayable is ridiculous. the fact steam still allows this to sell is even more so. they probably don't want to get anywhere near it because once it's removed from the store people will be lining up for refunds once it's obvious this game was never going to happen.

I purchased this game in Novenber of 2013. God I wish I could get my money back. This games development is a failure, Even games like Dead State, Neo Scavenger, and 7 Days to Die were more finished in their extremly early alpha stages than this game has and still is today. Guess why, because the developers of those games actually wanted to finish their games, these guys......I dont even know if they care anymore at this point. Hell, I bought Space Engineers almost day 1, couldnt do anything at all but float around, but I saw the potential of it, and now, its one of the best indy sandbox games out there. I may have saw the potential in this back in November of 2013, but I lost that ambition long ago.

Don't let your 20 dollars get sucked into the pit of broken promises and dreams.

I thought supporting a Early Access game would be nice, but its gone nowhere.



Even if the developers manage to get this game working somewhere in the future,
It will have been forgotten under a massive pile of unorignal zombie survival games.

Rest in peace, 20 dollars.

The Dead Linger is a game with a great concept at its core, but it currently fails to deliver on what it promised. Promised features include: world sized procedurally generated worlds, weather systems, vehicles, character customization, and NPC survivors just to name a few. The procedurally generated worlds are no longer a promised feature because the developers admitted that they will no longer be able to fulfill that promise. While some people may be angry, I completely respect that. The world will still be quite large at 360 km squared. There are currently no vehicles or survivor NPCs either. With that aside, the core gameplay still needs a lot of work. This game is rough, and I mean rough. With polished early access games like Space Engineers, you may expect other EA games to have that polish but with TDL, that's not the case. Right now, even basic things like jumping are glitchy. In conclusion, TDL has brilliant ideas that fail to be delivered as of now. Think of purchasing this game as an investment, it may be great later, or maybe not. A concern that I have is that the game has changed engines two times and has been in development since 2012. If this game even gets finished, it will take quite a while.

Pros:
Cheaper if you buy right now (will be $30 in the future)
Multiplayer does work
Glitches can be funny

Cons:
Very rough shape

No objectives

TLDR; The Dead Linger has a great concept, creating the zombie game we have all dreamed of, but it's not there yet and if it does get there, it won't be for a while.

Hammer swings did NOTHING to a zombie. A chair spawned AFTER I DID. Quitting to desktop locked up my PC until I ran Task Manager and killed it. The textures are plain by PS2 standards. The multiplayer can't even load a LIST of players.

I spent $20 to fund this.
RUN. GET OUT NOW. SAVE YOURSELF!
(P.S: I rarely use the down thumb too.)

Moving really slow. The procedural world generation set it apart. Now after months of that being released they decide to pull procedural generation. Now the game is just like all of the other "Zombie" game clones. Run and gun killing everyone with the occasional zombie nusance. Nothing special being done here now. That being said buy h1z1 it is the better of the so called "zombie survival genere".

A few months ago I would have recommended this game, as it looked promising, and the developers seemed to have a plan and posted updates quite often, but alas, it seems like this game is going nowhere. Hurts me to admit that. Save your $20 for now. :(

absolute garbage
-no updates other than repeatedly changing the game engine which has always and will always be laggy as hell
-completely pointless after about 2 minutes because nothing works, weapons, actions, bikes all useless
-boring "new" map on empty servers

I personally cant believe steam has not stopped selling this scam, and the devs even have a donate $10 for pizza button on there site page. And just below that a no refunds in the fine print. May everyone who gets paid to work on this game die a horrible death and there other halves ravaged by beasts of the jungle as there children watch. -10/10

This game will never be completed so don't waste your money. It has been over 3 years and they still haven't finished this or even come out of Alpha for that matter. There hasn't been a patch for it in almost a year. It is broken and unplayable. Utter and Epic Fail here.

-Huuuge amount of bugs

I have followed this game since long before it was on steam, and sadly all i can say is that the game has lingered, the development move slowly forward without any real plan into the future and when a certain amount of progress is reached it seems the devlopers decide to switch to a new engine.

Please just save your money. Its not worth it, spent 20 bucks thinking that this game would be good and would be updated constantly. The devs are inactive, been months since an update. Constant freezes, huge fps drops, crashes, bugs. Just save your money and dont get this piece of ♥♥♥♥

Buys The Dead Linger,Checks Greenlight for the 500th time cuz The Dead Linger is not in a good state,finds a game with all of TDL promosies already there,10/10 Had no idea that this game has been around for 4 years.

Note:I don't remember that greenlight game and saw it about a year ago.
