Velocity Ultra, a game made by Brighton based FuturLab. A wonderful gem of a game that I would recommend to anyone.
It's a speed running, bullet hell, collect-a-thon game. All it's asking you to do is save every single survivor on the map, dodge all the bullets from the vast number of enemies you might see on the screen at any one time and do it as fast as you can. Simple, right? Heck yeah but challenging as anything.
For those that wish to the play the game and go through all of the 50 levels the game offers will find a decent challenge in getting the medals needed to get the xp for the level unlocks on the later levels, with a difficulty curve that proves challenging enough to keep going at the game to want to see the next levels, rather than providing a challenge far too difficult for it's own liking. To those that wish to finish the game with everything at the highest standard whilst never dying on the levels, have fun. It's worthwhile, yet difficult.
Level design is intelligent, a natural progression of branching paths and strategic teleport placement over the entire map. It never ends up being the same over and over again either, offering different levels types one after the other, whether that be trying to complete levels that might require never letting go of your boost or making sure you have the hundreds of survivors safe and sound to the immense enemies you see. Fresh and always fun, FuturLab definitely hit the mark here.
There are many secrets and extras in this game as well, providing tons of replayability and curiosity to find everything for the completionists out there. All the awards/challenges on it's list are certainly challenging and worth the bragging rights.
For the speedrunners too, have fun with the leaderboards. It's always fun to get higher and higher on them to beat those you never thought you could.
There is only one issue I had with this game sadly and that is the short teleport system. It can be very VERY precise and will sometimes get you killed, meaning your perfect run is messed up by a VERY small offset in the marker's position in a small area. This was however, the only issue I actually found with the game. However, this might have just been me.
Overall, Velocity Ultra is an incredibly fun and enjoyable game that I have only just come to review after obtaining every single achievement in the game and completing it 100% beyond the achievements, including reaching the number 8 spot in the Master Leaderboards so I know what I'm talking about here. Fast paced, fresh, varied and always interesting, this game is something gamer's should try for the challenge, innovation and fun times that they will have with this.
9.5/10 FuturLab. Can't wait for your port of Velocity2X to arrive on Steam.
