Update 01.089 - New Scenario Conditions, New Voxel Material

New conditions for scenarios have been added. Time condition will allow to set time limit in which mission should be completed. The limit is being set in minutes. Minimum value that can inserted is 1 min, if time is set it will be displayed in the right corner. There is also possibility to set time limit for spawning in respawn screen. If players hangs in respawn screen for too long he will lose the game. Another condition is the block destroyed. Both new settings can be used as both win and lose conditions. Scenario description can be displayed in-game by pressing 'U' key - the description will match the one from the workshop. Lastly we added new voxel material - organic matter.

Update 01.088 - UI Transparency, Rotating Sun, Voxel Support

The option to set the transparency of your UI has been added (under “Game” tab in “Options” menu). We’ve also added the option to set sun rotation (in world settings). The minimum value is 1 minute and the maximum is 24 hours. Additionally, we’ve implemented the voxel support for grids. When the option is enabled, any static grid which isn't attached to a voxel will become dynamic. Another implemented option is to disable the jet-pack usage in the world, so the player will not have a jet-pack at all. Also players can choose not to have tools in their inventory when they spawn in the world. All options are listed under “world” settings and are applicable for both scenarios and classic worlds. Lastly, projected blueprints can now inherit ownership from the projector itself. Corresponding check-box has to be checked for this feature to work. This feature is available only for the scenario edit mode.

About This Game

Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining.

Space Engineers utilizes a realistic volumetric-based physics engine: all objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. The game comes with two game modes: creative and survival.

Volumetric objects are structures composed from block-like modules interlocked in a grid. Volumetric objects behave like real physical objects with mass, inertia and velocity. Individual modules have real volume and storage capacity.

Space Engineers is inspired by reality and by how things work. Think about modern-day NASA technology extrapolated 60 years into the future. Space Engineers strives to follow the laws of physics and doesn't use technologies that wouldn't be feasible in the near future.

Space Engineers concentrates on construction aspects, but can be played as a tactical shooter as well. We expect players to avoid engaging in direct man-to-man combat and instead use their creativity and engineering skills to build war machines and fortifications. Space Engineers shouldn’t be about troops; it should be about the machinery you build.

  • Cargo ships - auto-piloted vessels (miners, freighters and military) that carry ore, ingots, constructions components and other materials from sector to sector. They can be looted but beware, they often contain booby traps!
  • Environmental hazards – protect your character and your creations from meteor storms (Safe, Normal, Cataclysm, Armageddon)
  • Conveyor, Collector, Connector (IMPORTANT: this is a first work-in-progress version and a realistic version will be added later) - Conveyors move items from inventory to inventory. Collectors can collect small objects (ore, ingots, components, tools) into inventory. Connectors can throw items from inventory to space (in future update could be used to connect two ships/stations and transfer items)
  • Artificial mass – can be used to add gravity-affected mass to ships, useful in machine ships or cars
  • Wheels - use them with rotors and artificial mass to build vehicles
  • Automated turrets – gatling, missile and interior. Turrets are used mostly as defense mechanism rather than shooting other players. They aim on decoys (automatically by default), meteorites, missiles or all moving objects (eg. small/large ships) - targeting can be changed in the control panel
  • Large weapons - missile launcher (for large ships)
  • Large and small ship grinder and welder – assemble and disassemble blocks faster and in larger amount
  • Batteries - enables players to store the energy generated by solar panels or reactors at an efficiency rate of 80%
  • Pistons - offers the option to build more advanced machinery
  • Factions - create and join factions, determine ownership of blocks and manage the relations between them (hostile/ally). NOTE: Factions are currently Work-in-Progress. There are still many things to be added (eg. chat and communication) and some bugs/issues are yet to be fixed.
  • Remote ship control – control ships without being inside the ship’s cockpit (drones)
  • Remote turret control - control turrets directly

  • Modding API - brings a lot of new possibilities to modders and allows them to alter the game by writing C# scripts which have access to in-game objects (WIP - more features will be added in the future)
  • Blueprints - save your ship or station on a blueprint and paste it into your game
  • Projector block – project blueprints and weld the projection
  • Sensor – detects ships, palyers, asteroids, stations, floating objects and their state (friendly, neutral or enemy) and ownership
  • Sound block - reproduce predefined sounds such as alarm or siren for announcements
  • Programmable block – players can write small programs executed by the block
  • Communication – chat between players and factions
  • GPS - create, send, receive and manage GPS coordinates in the game
  • Voxel hands - shape and form the asteroids and change their material (creative mode only)

The performance depends on the complexity of your world and the configuration of your computer. Simple worlds run smoothly even on low-end computers, but a more complex world with rich object interactions could overload even high-end computers.

Space Engineers. What can I say? It's basically Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program combined. Players can choose from Survival and Multiplayer. In survival you have to build ships and a medical room to survive. There are hostile ships you can grab resources from but be prepared for a fight. They are armed. Creative is well creative. Build what you imagine and what your PC can handle. There are Servers, Easily Downloadable Mods, And a thing called Games were instead of LAN u can have people join! Overall its a 5/5 for me. I recommend it this summer due to the sale!

After 1089 hours of gameplay.. time for a review!

I've never been hooked to a game before... I tend to hop from one game to another.

This one is a game changer.

If you liked minecraft, sandboxes, military, building, complexity, puzzles, exploring, crafting, doing whatever you want...

This game is for you.

It's a complex game with a steep learning curve. But when you get the edge of it, this game breaks the limits of many games out there. (watch for the links at the end of the review)

I play most of the time in Survival PVP Multiplayer (because objectives and challenges increases in a big way compared to pure PVE in this game i.e. military component gameplay), and sometimes in Creative to experiment new designs, weapons and new engineering processes.

Many will complain about the lag, stability, bugs unfixed for months... it's all true but Keen opened their software for the community to help enhance it further, server admins and community developers to push the limits of what is possible while Keen work on the core component of the game. To some degree, you need to accept to adapt. If that doesn't work for you, then don't buy this game. Personally, I don't have any problems in adapting, working around bugs and enjoy everything this game has to offer so far. This is definitely one of the best game I ever had in my collection.

Minecraft in Space?
It is not Minecraft, but it has similarities, being a grid based game (often called voxel); however your grids form their own "objects" making it possible to smash those grids against each other and watch havok deform the material, and spaceships create awesome wrecks.

The Creative Solo Player
With multiple ways to achieve your results, you will quickly see the creative part of the game becomes the first magnet. Designing your own stuff is easy there, weapons do not require ammo to fire, blocks are buildable fast.

You can use mirroring to build faster, modify the level to your liking by deforming asteroids or placing objects, copy and paste parts on each other, use all kinds of mechanical parts, or a programming block to create whatever you imagine. But the biggest fun is to actually design in creative, save it as a blueprint, and rebuild it in survival conditions, or use your own spaceship design in a custom match.

Creative gives you all the abilities to get to know the game engine. Not everything you can play in singleplayer will make a lot of sense in multiplayer, and you can create abonimations like life sized ships, use thousands of mods to make them beautiful and even host it for a few players to look around.

Survival
Survival is the basic new trend in sandbox games, once you learn how to survive, you also learn how resources are limited, and how the players are balanced in a MP setting. Surviving in space needs energy and oxygen atm. - you need to mine asteroids, refine the materials, build new materials, and each component you would build in creative with a click needs a lot more work.

Since you can die, or stuff which explodes might be lost, your energy might run out, or your oxygen, survival gives it's own long term struggles, but does not really hinder you to establish yourself, and concentrate on tasks at hand.

Therefore the refining and assembling is not as complicated as in games dedicated to this, but still complicated enough that a question which you never asked yourself suddenly pops up, and makes you realize, your current design philosophy with all its glory has also its weaknesses.

There is little more to say, it's only a step, if you cannot entertain yourself, you might want more... so more to come...

Scenarios
Atm. introduced, scenarios and modding are a big focus of Keen. Designing your own level, like it's a game within a game, and playing it with friends, or publishing it and become famous on workshop are their own achievement. However, be warned, this part of the game is still under construction.

The Space MMO dream?
With the coming introduction of planets, the introduction a new rewritten netcode, and the developers going public with sourcecode (so you can help fix bugs or have it easier to create mods on github), and also the efforts in AI "research" from the publisher, it seems clear, that sandbox worlds are a dream of the dev team, aswell as the player base.

Currently however, you should not expect a full online game experience.

Current state critique
I have little critique. It is the first C# app, I do not dismiss, simply because it's written in a virtual machine language, something I do not want game engines written in personally; I can see a lot of struggles ahead for the devs, but they seem keen (pun intended) on facing those obstacles. I can only say, if they keep up their energy, and dedication, this game will slowly evolve into an absolute classic. That said, it runs well, but of course also eats resources, if you give it more. Like basicly every physics game; graphics and effects are decent, as is FPS.

This being said, it's of course directx only, so windows/xbox based, with still a rudimentary hackish netcode, and no sandbox servers, database stuff etc, and especially not for linux, to make it really able to create medium sized communities for your own "little spacegame". There are servers which try to make larger games than 4-6 players possible, but actually, it is not something you want to play now. However, since there is much to do until that is all ready, and still core features to come, I would hop on now, than later; it is more than worth it's money in fun, and offers you especially if you have a geeky heart or a fable for lego or lego technic, a lot, especially if you like to invest time "behind the game".

It is also great for kids, since the game does not focus on violence, much less than minecraft anyway, while it also does not completely "conceal its possibility".

Have I said, that you can smash ships you built with copy paste to see them explode? This should be all the arguments you need. If you quickly want to do something in a virtual world, this is one of the most ideal games for it. You might even just build a conference center for youtube videos or create machinimas with it - if you are the creative player, who wants to design, this game is already in a very finished state. For everyone who waits for the online experience, I can understand if it stays on the whishlist. But definitely, it deserves a spot there.

Although many people say this game is broken, and it is, this is still a diamond of Sandbox games in the Steam Store rough. And although it's such a highly detailed game KSH still finds time to update this and their other game Medieval Engineers every week, always adding something new and fixing problems, I orginally tried the game a long time ago during it's free weekend, and when it was over I vowed that someday I would get it, and I did, and it is even more fun every time I play it. The only thing I hope they add is maybe some more innovative weapons and tools, but that's just my oppinion.
