Update 01.056 – Bugfixing #3

This is the third batch of bugfixes. We have also changed the height of piston blocks from 2-blocks to 3-blocks. This way, pistons should have more stable performance. Another (less important) change that we made is the reduction of the missile range from 1000 meters to 800 meters.

About This Game

Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining.

Space Engineers utilizes a realistic volumetric-based physics engine: all objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed. The game comes with two game modes: creative and survival.

Volumetric objects are structures composed from block-like modules interlocked in a grid. Volumetric objects behave like real physical objects with mass, inertia and velocity. Individual modules have real volume and storage capacity.

Space Engineers is inspired by reality and by how things work. Think about modern-day NASA technology extrapolated 60 years into the future. Space Engineers strives to follow the laws of physics and doesn't use technologies that wouldn't be feasible in the near future.

Space Engineers concentrates on construction aspects, but can be played as a tactical shooter as well. We expect players to avoid engaging in direct man-to-man combat and instead use their creativity and engineering skills to build war machines and fortifications. Space Engineers shouldn’t be about troops; it should be about the machinery you build.

  • Custom colors for blocks – Customize your creations by using any color you like
  • Cargo ships - auto-piloted vessels (miners, freighters and military) that carry ore, ingots, constructions components and other materials from sector to sector. They can be looted but beware, they often contain booby traps!
  • Environmental hazards – protect your character and your creations from meteor storms (Safe, Normal, Cataclysm, Armageddon)
  • Conveyor, Collector, Connector (IMPORTANT: this is a first work-in-progress version and a realistic version will be added later) - Conveyors move items from inventory to inventory. Collectors can collect small objects (ore, ingots, components, tools) into inventory. Connectors can throw items from inventory to space (in future update could be used to connect two ships/stations and transfer items)
  • Artificial mass – can be used to add gravity-affected mass to ships, useful in machine ships or cars
  • Wheels - use them with rotors and artificial mass to build vehicles
  • Automated turrets – gatling, missile and interior. Turrets are used mostly as defense mechanism rather than shooting other players. They aim on decoys (automatically by default), meteorites, missiles or all moving objects (eg. small/large ships) - targeting can be changed in the control panel
  • Large weapons - missile launcher (for large ships)
  • Large and small ship grinder and welder – assemble and disassemble blocks faster and in larger amount
  • Batteries - enables players to store the energy generated by solar panels or reactors at an efficiency rate of 80%
  • Pistons - offers the option to build more advanced machinery
  • Factions - create and join factions, determine ownership of blocks and manage the relations between them (hostile/ally). NOTE: Factions are currently Work-in-Progress. There are still many things to be added (eg. chat and communication) and some bugs/issues are yet to be fixed.
  • Remote ship control – control ships without being inside the ship’s cockpit (drones)
  • Remote turret control - control turrets directly
  • 3D printing - export (CTRL+E) and 3D print the creations that you design in the game (http://www.SpaceEngineersGame.com/3d-printing.html)
  • Modding API - brings a lot of new possibilities to modders and allows them to alter the game by writing C# scripts which have access to in-game objects
  • Blueprints - save your ship or station on a blueprint and paste it into your game

A buddy launched a small server and we had some fun mining in a partially hollowed out asteroid.

Then he went afk for a few hours and his ship was hit by a meteor. I built a landing gear onto my ship to try and tow him out of harms way.

He gets back and see's my landing gear, see's the immense damage, and assumes I beat up his ship trying to lock onto him. He promptly rams my ship to remove the landing gear, taking out a good chunk along with it.

I then built a gatling turret in secret for a bit of revenge.. then changed my mind and set it to meteors only to prevent more destruction.

Later I notice the gun has been pointing in the same direction for a very long time.. turns out my friend had created a faction and my gatling gun had been silently killing him repeatedly from long range.


10/10 would accidentally exact revenge again.

TL;DR;
A very interesting sandbox game, with realistic enough physics, efficient building interface, many mechanics to play with and build smart ships, and a truckload of mods, skyboxes and blueprint to toy with.
Only real downside (beyond not available on Linux ;)) is that this game is very resource-consuming and seems not multi-core friendly, so it may run very slow on medium-range machines.

A MUST-HAVE for anyone liking space navigations, dogfights and unlimited creativity! :)

"Yet another sandbox!"
Indeed. But, what a sandbox!!! While it may seem very similar to Minecraft in essence, Space Engineers holds its own thanks to a few unique aspects:
* SPACE! Building your own spaceship or station then go fight or race with friends is truly a thrill! Especially when creative mode offers a well-thought interface (although there would still be a few improvments to make, like a larger number of toolbars).
* Physics! Well, it's a very similar point. Still, beyond the basics of space navigation, the included mechanics such as rotors, pistons and sensors allow wanabee inventors to (re)create astucious machineries to give some automated glory to your creations!
* MODS! This game has been designed from the get-go to be easily modifiable, and the recent addition of ships/stations blueprints really amps the game! Between reconstruction of famous spaceships, tricky mechanics or slick self-made models, you really can spend hours just trying everything -or designing the next most popular ship on the Workshop!

So, is this game a true gem, without flaws? Unfortunately, no.
1. This game is a resource-hog! It is very CPU demanding and can put down even quad-core if you get a bit heavy on blocks and interactions (it fully crashed my computer once when I fought with friends between half a dozen ships).
While it's partially explained by the richness of interactions and creativity, everything cannot be overlooked.
If your computer is more than 2 years old, unless it was high-end at the time you won't enjoy it fully.
2. Survival is basically boring for now. Only difference with creative is occasional meteor showers, keeping an eye on your internal battery, and SPENDING TWO HOURS JUST TO BUILD A SMALL SHIP ! 'Cause you'll have to drill, build a refinery, drill rare minerals, refine them, order component manufacturing and assemble them, and EVERY STEP IS RIDICULOUSLY SLOW! So unless you start in "scenarii" it's just an uninteresting waste of time... For now at least.

Space Engineers is a sandbox game about construction, engineering, and maintenance of objects in space. This includes small ships, large ships, space stations, and platforms. It features a simple crafting system, jetpacks, survival and creative modes, as well as multiplayer! Space Engineers is developed by Keen Software House, the same team behind Miner Wars.

The game revolves around the player collecting resources from the asteroids and rocks floating out in space. To reach them you can utilize either a ship you've built (or started with) or your trusty jetpack. Once you've reached a location, you can then scout out materials and begin mining them. Once you have sufficient resources, you can then craft things such as a cockpit, thrusters, a gyroscope, a gravity generator, and reactors...all of which are required for building a ship. Multiplayer can be quite challenging, as it will have you coordinating with other players to build large stations and ships for moving and storing items as you establish a base of operations and then go out and find new sources of ore and materials.

Everything in this game is destructible. And I mean EVERYTHING. What you've built, what your friend has built....even your friend! If your ship is about to crash into a station, you can do your best to evade but you will most likely fail, and destroy half of the station AND the ship. And the thing is that the developers actually put the effort into that! The destructed objects look very realistic and look like they had some thought put into hnow they would look if destroyed a certain way (Rammed by a ship for example)! Fly a ship into another ship and check it out. Broken objects, pieces of metal, and more will all be floating away through space after a stellar impact.

Space Engineers is currently still in Alpha, and is available on Steam via the Early Access program. While it is still very early in its life, Space Engineers is very playable, and a blast to play with a few friends. Get a few together, grab a four-pack of the game, and you will definitely get share of fun from this game.

Minecraft meets KSP meets Gmod, but the exact mix depends on what settings you pick. If you pick Survival mode without many ships, welcome to Space Mining Simulator 2014. If you pick Creative mode, the game turns into a space-based version of Gmod. No planets at the moment, but asteroids and the option to add meteor showers mean that you don't have to stick with ships. 9/10 will get better with time.

Normally I'm not an early-acess type of person, but I saw the developers of this game are EXTREMELY competent and consistent with a schedule of weekly updates every thursday which include new features and bugfixes.

I'm happy with the game's current direction really. The developers enabling modding support was a really smart move on their part because modding communities often contribute fantastic gameplay and features (much like Garry's Mod!).

Gameplay-wise the game is just a sandbox survival with a main focus on construction and resourse gathering. For anyone to have more of an experience of that they need to roleplay or create their own sub-games.

What I'd like to see now is different game-modes and less focus on construction/manipulation. Even something simple like a Science Unlocking system would work, or more random events like direlect space stations with aliens in them to explore (and explode!)

The game is going a great direction, is plenty of fun to mess around in, however can get quite boring over time if you're playing by yourself in survival.

Space Engineers is a very detailed, very impressive sandbox crafting game set in space. It consists of building things, exploration and gathering resources for said building.

The highlights of the game are that you can make pretty much whatever you want, and that you can be as specific in your building as your patience allows right down to each block.

The physics are also noteworthy and make it stand out from similar games, particularly in regards to destruction and how things visually break depending on the point and force of impact.

Very few bugs are present especially for an Early Access game, most of which can be fixed with a simple relog.

Space Engineers is lots of fun and well worth your time, either alone or with your friends.

Space Engineer is a great game containing hours of gameplay if you like using your imagination to create, or if you like to explore what others have created.

Even if still in the early access program, this game has a lot to offer. The devs adds new features and bugfixes on a weekly basis and the community is active.

This game if very close to minecraft, so if you are looking for a strong story telling, this game may not be right for you.
The multiplayer is also working at a bare minimum, so if you plan on playing it, be ready for some grieffers.

In space engineers, you take control of a Space engineer in the middle of an asteroid belt with no way to leave, despite having multiple spacecraft around him to pilot. The goal in the engineer's mind is unknown, but it likely has to do with attempting to create the Enterprise, or Star Destroyer. The engineer has two ways to accomplish this. He can either manually mine ores and resources using his drill and spacecraft, or he can use his powers of mind control to conjure up entire ships out of nothing. When he tries to mine things using drills, his drill has an invariably long lifetime, meanwhile he must charge himself every five minutes or so, or he risks dying of being tired. As he constructs his ship, he uses parts built by an assembler, which uses robots to assemble various refined ores into complex parts. He then uses various parts to construct spacecraft while welding in an inconsistent manner, which may explain why his ships usually fall apart when shaked. When he uses his magic, however, he can remain awake forever without negative consequences.

However, despite all the magic said engineer can use, he cannot stop a small meteor from blowing up his spacecraft. The meteor storm is the least of his worries, however. He must be on constant lookout to not knock his ship about before he has installed all necessary systems, or he risks it falling endlessly into the void. He must also be careful not to cut his ship in half, since engineers cannot understand the concept of welding two halves of a ship together without special "merge blocks". You can however, create a space station that does not move, no matter what, with no visible means of keeping itself in postition, but again, magic.

Space Engineers also offers a heightened challenge, titled, "Cram more cool-looking sci-fi junk into your ship", under the guise of the steam workshop. Despite all attempts, no one has successfully crammed enough sci-fi into their ship.The engineers also use this "workshop" as a way to teleport to another world someone has created, and admire their works, before attempting to destroy them through all means possible, before giving a sort of rating based on Facebook.

Woah!
This game easily the best game i have ever played (EVER)
It has this Feeling where i can be playing for hours but it does not get boring.
It lags as a COW on my pc BUT its only in early stages of developing.

a block game where you make different parts and they make bigger parts and they make ships and stations.
you can make anything and fly it around.
its a pretty big deal and they got a xbox deal. one of my favorite games.
pvp mode is fun but nothing to be taken serious as it hasnt really been developed yet. i enjoy solo play.
the parts they have are insane, you can really make anything you can think of totally custom.
its a builders game and slower grinding and battles would mean alot.

This game reminds me of like a more advanced minecraft. It really allows one to be creative. If you are wanting to keep playing while the Devs update the game then you are good. I have not come across that many bugs. Worth the money!

This game has amazing potentiol (sorry for my spelling) their are a couple bad things about it 1. The controls take a LONG time to adjust to 2. IT IS A ALPHA therefore it is not perfect, but it is as perfect as i could wish for.
