About This Game

Experience the wild as a mother badger sheltering her cubs from harm. On their journey they get stalked by a bird of prey, encounter perils of the night, river rapids crossings, big forest fires and the looming threat of death by starvation.

Food is to be found, but is there enough for everyone? You will learn that the cubs need food not just to survive, but to enable them overcome the varying challenges they will face as they make their way through the world.

Are you ready for a truly different adventure, something that might evoke feelings you've never felt in a game before? In the wild, all living creatures are put to the test. The question in the end is who will survive to live another day?

Retro Family have once again composed a beautiful soundtrack to an original and graphically innovative setting in a world of nature where shelter is your only hope and survival your only goal.

Shelter has some great artwork, a high 'cute' factor, as well as an original premise - but it ultimately falls a bit short on being an 'entertaining' game. The whole adventure was quite linear, with nothing novel or interesting really happening.

If the trailer makes you go 'awwwwww', then you may enjoy an afternoon with this, otherwise, I'd recommend avoiding altogether or waiting for a deep discount.

Not so much about badgers as it is about death. Badgers are cool, though.

Badger simulator is shallow.

Everyone loves badgers, right?
I don't think that's enough to make a game good, tearing real gameplay from it and hide behind the visual dynamics of an artsy representation of a natural world.
In Shelter there isn't really much to do, and the game relies on your "ability" to make the little animals which follow you around survive, walking around and concretly doing nothing of interest.
The outcome is sadly a boring excuse of depicting something that wants to be different but ends up being only badly streamlined and shallow.

Super cute!! I'm a huge animal lover, and Video games are amazing- so why not put them together? I almost instantly fell in love with my pups, and their barks were so cute! The art style was really unique, and the scenery + the music made an amazing experience.

Although this game is indeed a bit short on gameplay, it is really fun; as it brings a totally different style to survival games. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but it was still a super fun way to pass the time. I even learned to put my life on the line for theirs, rather than leaving them in the dust whenever I got scared rofl

I also do wish they had Achievments to encourage me to play again, but I did anyways. They have card drops and a tomegachi like mode where the scenery of the forest changes whenever you visit, so that's cool too I guess.

It took me way over an hour to complete it because I get confused much too easily unlike most people lol. I was also a horrible mom the first round, and only made it with one pup.. Even so, I'm not sure if it's worth 10 Dollars?? I'd say more around 6, but still completely worth it! The birds drove me up the wall though, so 7/10 lmao. I couldn't stand them, nor the Texas music that followed. Could have been worse, could have been better.

Pinstripe and Tubby were the only two to make it. It was surprisingly hard to lose the others.

Gameplay isn't perfect, but I was surprised at how much I cared after losing one of my "kids". Not sure what the replay value would be, I wish there was achievements to force you to try again. As it is, I'm not sure my heart could take another playthrough.

It's a quiet story but the process seems to be a bit difficult.

The first boy was caught by the eagle.

Two girls have been washed away by the water.

The rest of the children are lost in the dark

At last I was brought into the sky.

The look is very cool and the music sets a beautiful atmosphere... but the game is boring, really boring. I tried the first two levels and there was nothing challinging about them, so I got tired pretty quickly.

My feelings.

No seriously, you'll bond with these babies a lot more than your baby in Fallout 4.

And you will hate birds.

Hate.

Birds.

But seriously, it's a pretty short game - I'd say it's worth a couple of dollars for a touching experience. Maybe five, tops. There just isn't enough content to warrant more than that.

Shelter is a nice badger story, it is pretty challenging, even more so if you want to keep the pups alive, which of course you would want to, however it is possible not to cue the ending and just do whatever you want in the final level which i find is fun just fooling around with all the pups, yes i managed to keep all the pups alive. Overall i'd say its a nice rather short game and i'd give it 5/10 mainly because it's short, like really short but if you're fine with short games and you like badgers im sure this will be a nice short game you'll like!

Rating 7.5/10
Overview: Adventure

+ The gameplay has you controlling a mother badger with her 5 babies following. You have to find/hunt for food to feed your babies as well as traverse the dangerous environments as you avoid harm.

+ Really loved the art style, it has a minimalistic quality to it yet feels very unique it its own way

+ The game takes place over a series of different environments each area getting progressively more dangerous and more unique. It is always an interesting experience when you reach a new area.

+Losing a baby feels sad and yet you have no choice to move along reminding you the harsh realities of nature. Very few games invoke that sense of feeling yet this game does it in such an easy way.

+ Good sense of pacing,

+No HUD, allowing for a more immersive experience

+ Free DLC to extend the games very short length

The Bad

-game doesn't do the best of jobs explaining certain gameplay elements often leaving you confused in certain areas.

-The game is very short. It will take roughly 1 hour to beat, there is however a dlc that changes up the gameplay a bit to keep you interested in a few more hours if you like.

Conclusion

This game is a perfect example of an indie game done right. You don't need super realistic graphics to make the game standout. The developers combined an interesting concept with a unique art style and made a game that I was engaged with throughout the end. Losing a baby is sad because you legitimately feel like you failed as your duty as a parent. This game pleasantly surprised me.

Shelter is a lovely survival game which has you playing as an intrepid babdgermum or badgerdad whose job it is to save your kit.

The game plays very well and looks fantastic. The soundtrack is joyous to listen to and the threats ingame tangible. Over a very short time you feel a real connection with your baby badgers and will do anything to save them.

Sadly, the game falls down on it's length, which is my only criticism. A lovely little game, but little it is, with around 1 hour for a full playthrough.

Still a fun experience!
