About This Game

This is a stand alone mod and does not require SDK BASE or any other dependency such as HL2. It will run on it's own.

NEOTOKYO° is a multi-player first person shooter that provides a visceral & realistic combat experience in a rich futuristic setting.

NEOTOKYO° takes place about 30-40 years from now in a Japan that has drifted into social/political strife due to the inevitable stresses that come from changing times. The Japanese government is grappling with intensified external (Asia geopolitics) and internal (economic/social) problems, and there is mounting pressure from within Japan to return to the days when it exerted influence through military power and strength. A failed legislative push to alter the Japanese Constitution (allowing the Japanese military to engage in offensive actions outside of the country) leads to an attempted military coup by members of Japan's armed forces (GSDF). The coup fails, but was very close to succeeding. In an effort to suppress further coup attempts, Japan's Prime Minister forms a branch inside the Interior Ministry's National Security Forces (NSF) called GROUP SIX. They answer directly to the Prime Minister and are sworn to protect the Japanese Constitution at all costs. They immediately begin to hear rumors of a rogue element of the GSDF Special Forces (JINRAI) maneuvering for a second coup attempt. These JINRAI are Special Operations Group 43 (SOG43), fierce nationalist loyal to their love of country, and a desire to put Japan back into a position of strength and power.

This begins the war in the shadows between the NSF and JINRAI.

It is very sad to see that there are only nine public servers at the time of this writting.
It is a great game, and very underated, and best of all it is free. Devs take note if you are going to make a mod based game this is how it should be done. This game is made under a dated version of Source Engine amd yet the creators still managed to make a beautiful and fun game. It is best described as a cross between Couter-Strike Source and Team Fortress 2 but with a small non-toxic community and no microtransactions (Very big plus). The game has a Cyber Punk theme and it works well, not to mention a great soundtrack. If you have not already installed this game do it now. There is no reason not to, IT IS FREE!

It's not different enough. Honestly, if I wanted to play Counter Strike, that's what I would do.
The theme also just doesn't hold my interest.

A classic heavily influenced by Ghost in the Shell and Neuromancer, Neotokyo came out during the heyday of Source mods and Valve-heavy multiplayer gaming. I've probably put hundreds of hours into NT, and I'm still awful at it. Neotokyo requires more teamwork than most games of its type, and thoughtfuly use of its active camouflage and three vision modes. It's a carefully balanced game, and though the community has waxed and waned over the years, it'd be hard to beat as a LAN party centerpiece, and is easily worth its asking price alone for that.

This is a Half-Life 2 mod with Counter-Strike style gameplay. It seems to have had a cult following a few years ago, but it's player count is now only about 10 players average with a peak count in April of about 40.

It's clear someone put a lot of love into this mod back in the day, but I think the numerous free-to-play or reasonably priced Counter-Strike games, Source engine FPS games, and Ghost in the Shell games (this is inspired by that universe) have pulled it's audience away in various directions.

I made a goal to try all of the free-to-play FPS's on Steam during Summer 2016 looking for hidden gems. NeoTokyo would probably fit my definition of such if it had a healthy player population, but I think it's on its last breathes. Nonetheless, I plan to check back in Fall or Winter to see if anything changes.

There is only one way I am able to explain this game: beautiful.
I have spent much of my free time over the weekends playing this game, and I regret none of it. I have meet so many great, diverse and amazing people, whom themselves, are equally satisfied with the game. Though yes, the servers crash, the game is 9 years old, and is unnoticed, none of those factors will stop me from playing this game. I am so lucky to have meet and personally talked to all of the developers, and unlike other games, they really care and are putting their free time to continue the games existence. I can not stress enough the beauty of this game. Even outside of it, I stay in contact with the many people I have had the privilege to meet: Sharing jokes (and cats) over discord, playing other games together, and even, writing a book.

This game has been one of the best things to happen to me. Without the people, and the games community, I don't know where I would be, since this game helped me get through some very tough times in the past, even stopping me from ending my own life.

I owe so much to this game, even more than I have tried to contribute, which includes a book and much artwork. I owe the developers and the community much more then all of that, since it helped me.

Though I may not be able to program, I wish I could help to keep this game alive, because it kept me alive with its music and the love of the community.

I will never stop playing this game, it has helped me too much for me to do that. So, I thank you, and I hope that it will bring me much more in the future.

Really great tactical fps game, where everything revolves around your team and the strategies you utilize to win. There's only one game mode though, capture the flag, in this case it's capture the ghost. If you die during the round you remain dead till the rounds end. You and your team need to pick up the ghost which is randomly placed somewhere on the map and bring it to your cap zone to win the round. The twist here being when you pick up the ghost you can see enemy movement from up to 40 meters, so calling out to your team here is the key. 3 classes, assault, support and recon, each with unique capabilites and their own styles. By now you figured out the game is gold amirite, but, the community is very small, game is maybe even dead now. Though the real value of this game lies in its community, everyone's friendly and nice, no cheaters, hackers or d-bags. I've made some really great friendships in this game. And yes, this game is FREE, if you wanna check it out, play on fridays, thats when everyone plays and thats when you'll truly enjoy the game.

One of my favorite games to play... and one that's really hard to recommend.

I dunno, this game feels right, it always has. Back before the Steam release, when there were only two servers with damn near no one on them 'scept at the right times. It's got bugs, there's some questionable design decisions, but all in all there's nothing REALLY like it on the market. Blacklight: Retribution and the new GitS game get the aesthetic right, but not really the gameplay. This feels like a game where you use your supersoldiery to its maximum capacity. Jumping around, cloaking, using your class's special vision all work wonderfully. The guns are cool designs too, very future but very grounded in current weapons development. These are believable firearms, and they all pack a good punch and feel good to use.

That being said, this game has a pretty high difficulty curve. Not a lot of bones are thrown to new players, and the scoring system really encourages good gameplay and punishes babes in the woods too much, not giving them the tools they need to do well, and giving people who don't really need them all the fun stuff. That being said, you can EASILY kill the entire team with the weakest gun in the game if you just do it properly, and there's nothing stopping you from killing a foe wielding a more powerful weapon and taking it. Most of the difficulty comes down to knowing the maps, knowing where the ambush spots are, knowing where to look, and knowing where to go. This comes with time, but it can be frustrating to learn. The community of crazies who stick with this game too are a pretty helpful and chill bunch for the most part; you have to be to stick with a dead project this long. But it can still be intimidating to start. I'd say give it a try, and if it's not your thing, it's not your fault!

NEOTOKYO is a great game, crossing the Cyberpunk genre with the Source engine. The game is easy to play, and - although free - would even be worth buying, aside from one problem; the lack of players. The largest problem that this game has is that it is so greatly underplayed.

The graphics are great and the player models actually look realistic, as do the weapons.

Rating:

Graphics quality: 9/10
Realism (combat/backstory): 10/10
Community (Size): 1/10
Weapons: 6/10

Overall: 9/10

Are you tired of the same old generic FPS filled with achievements, microtransactions and tutorials that lead you by the hand and then tell you how awesome you are?

Are you an old school player who's looking for a tactical FPS whose graphics aren't exactly ♥♥♥♥?

Unless you too lazy and/or stupid not to click "visit website" to see how to play the game, then this is worth at the very least a try.

Slower pace means organized, coordinated and tactical gameplay accompanied by voice communication are much more important than in most other FPS games.
Be mindful of the ♥♥♥♥TON of weeaboos (japanophiles), which should be a plus for you if you are one, you'd feel right at home!
WIth no-life young adults asking one another what's their second favourite character of Touhou (because they're using their fav. as their ingame name already).
