Of all the games and application I have in my steam library this one really takes the cake. At first I was worried about the massive 512mb ram requirement and was unsure I would be able to run the application. However this did not end up being an issue. Once you do launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Family Edition you will be pleasantly suprised to how well it works. It doesn't feel as though they are holding your hand as you progress from learning how to use correct posture to your home row and beyond. This application is also great for many advanced users who want to increase their speed while having fun doing it! The only real con I can think of was my disappointment when I found at Mavis Beacon is not a real person and is just made up. In fact is she was real she would be like 90, talk about gross. Anyways I can not recomend this game enough buy it if you were thinking about it.

I am beginning to type from scratch and if that is your case I would recommend this software to you.
I suppose the negative reviews must be from people who already know to type way better than me and they may be searching for something more advanced than this software, but it seems quite good for novels like me.
The basic is that you will have lessons which will make you practice some letters in chains and then words and finally sentences with those letters or numbers, so it goes step by step.

A month has passed and I keep thinking the same, lots of tests to improve your typing skills and lots of ways to evaluate those skills, setting wpm and accuracy as you wish.
The text can be heard as well, I guess some people may be able of typing while listening to them, but thats not my case.
Another good feature is a free typing text up to 4 paragraphs, where you can see how many wps can you do

Truly terrible. Don't get it. I foolishly thought this was going to be an upgrade from the 2011 Ultimate Edition. But it's a huge downgrade

This version lacks the typing "games" which you may remember and be likely wanting to nostalgically revisit.

Alternatively, if you're an experienced typist or even proficient player of video games you'll set your standard assessment level to somewhere around 85wpm with 99% accuracy. This translates into the impish Mavis demanding from you a 91wpm with 98% accuracy for a "passing" grade on the application's series of exams.

I suppose if you've any children or family members who share your account with you, the application could prove useful. However, I'd guess that for many of us, we're quite fine and dandy without the aid of Ms. Beacon.

Requires an installation of Apple's Quicktime.
