About This Game

Betrayer is a first person action adventure game that takes you to the New World at the turn of the 17th century.

The year is 1604. You sailed from England expecting to join a struggling colony on the coast of Virginia. Instead, you find only ghosts and mysteries. What catastrophe blighted the land and drained it of color and life? Where are the settlers and tribes who lived here?

Clue by clue, you must piece together the story of what befell this doomed settlement and find a way to set things right. You will be hunted by corrupted Conquistadors and ravening shadows as you explore an expansive wilderness in order to trace the brief, tragic history of the colony and search for survivors.

Key Features

  • Explore large, open environments teeming with danger and discovery. Chart your own course in search of clues and treasures.
  • Switch between two distinct worlds featuring different enemies, obstacles, and threats.
  • Wield early 17th century weaponry including muskets, bows, crossbows, and tomahawks. Upgrade your arsenal by purchasing or finding faster, deadlier, longer-ranged weapons.
  • Charge headlong into battle with guns blazing or pick enemies off quietly. A novel, movement-based stealth system lets you hide in plain sight or use the wind to mask your footsteps.
  • Equip ability-enhancing Charms to complement your play style, granting anything from extra health to faster movement to improved stealth.
  • Play with the default visual style for maximum eeriness and tension or customize the color and contrast settings to suit your tastes.

I owned this game for about 2 years before I finally sat down and really played it. I really liked the story and piecing together all of the clues and stuff but the game itself is very repetitive. By the end I was thanking the game for having areas with no totems to cleanse because it was such a chore.

Tough fps rpg with a unique style in an exceedingly rare setting. A bit light on the rpg aspect for my taste. It's kind of like a fusion of Dark Souls and something Elder Scrolls-ian. 10/10 on the audio work setting the atmosphere.

A very unique game, you can play the entire game in black&white + red, if you wish. There are 2 different types of gameplays, stealth and direct. The atmosphere is really amazing, a bit creepy. Achies are not hard to get, yet, going after them will cost you more time, then the walkthrough of the game itself.
Definitely worth buying.

So... I wouldn't recommend this at all. Good if you can stand skipping audio, poor framerate, and overall poor gameplay. Honestly- too bright as well. Now, it could just be my computer itself, not being the best of the best; but if I can get Fallout and Skyrim, along with several other demanding games to run smoother than butter, there is no excuse. But, I guess everyone has thier own cup of tea, and mine is not this game.

Atmospheric pseudo FPS-RPG set in 1600s. You wake up on the coast of Virginia, but the lands ale almost completely deserted. You need to discover all secrets and help red hood find her sister and bring peace once again to these lands.

Audio7/10
Graphics8/10
Gameplay7/10
Story6/10
Time to beat6.5hrs
Summary
7/10

PROS
  • Pretty visuals with nice "black and white" concept
  • Atmospheric
  • Pseudo open-world. Fortunately it is not vast.
  • Findings
  • Can keep you in tension
  • You have to discover the story by yourself
  • Very good ambient sounds
  • Challenging, but not frustrating

NEUTRAL
  • Voice actors would make this game so much better
  • The black and white high contrast graphics can be tiring. Fortunately you can change them whenever you want
  • Optimalization could be better
  • The ending is rather disappointing. I was expecting something more memorable

CONS
  • Maybe it is just me, but I doubt that english is native developers' language. Some sentences are just shockingly bad.
  • What is more, some sentences are just extremely embarrassing. The way we are trying to flirt with the red hood, have mercy!
  • Many glitches and bugs ( I got stuck in the stones several times, I have wandered to the end of the world and then fell into the oblivion)
  • Findings are sometimes barely visible
  • The game gets monotonous. There are just 3 maybe 4 different types of enemies, every location is almost the same)
  • The game is not stable (at least for me). It had crashed 3 times during 6 hour gameplay.

Interesting, and creative first-person adventure game

This game is pretty like Skyrim, althought this game is not that complex. The story is a little bit weird for me, and I couldn't do anything with the ending. Although I enjoyed every bit of the game. There are a few hard achievements connecting to this game.

If I were you, I would pick it up on a sale.

Betrayer is a fun FPS adventure game that definitely stands apart from other games. There isn't really many RPG elements so I wouldn't go in expecting such, but it is still a compelling little story type game. It is set in a world with two variations, light and dark, during colonial times. The backstory and messages scattered across the map are in no way dull and do not detract from the main story like in some games and the main storyline seems interesting enough.

The only issues I currently have with the game are the enemies with their extreme ranged accuracy, enemies having really wide detection ranges, no voice acting whatsoever (which is okay still), and not much in terms of customization of anything (which is also okay because it seems like more of a story game anyways).

It does a lot of things well though, such as the animations, the sounds, the graphics, and just the individual character of the game. I would say it is worth picking up because it really does have an interesting style that will keep you occupied for awhile.

Excellent. Just excellent. If you want a FPS with loads of hand holding look elsewhere. If you want a tricky, stealth(ish), thoughtful story driven game then you should play this.

There are LOADS of good points (story, setting, style etc), with very few negatives. In fact I'm struggling to think of any negatives.

Take your time and enjoy the setting and enviroment. It's worth it.

Pretty fun game. Color scheme was cool, but made some enemies (flaming natives) nearly impossible to see. Thankfully you can adjust it on the fly.

The animal sounds for enemies has had lasting effects. I played and finished this game about a month ago. Lately I've been watching True Blood and those bird call in the background of the show are idential to a certain enemy type in the game. When I hear that in the show my ears perk up a bit since I'm used to thinking there is an enemy near.

Would somone please tell me the ♥♥♥♥ is the point of this game ? it's aimless and dull, why do I want to explore all these empty places, why do I want to collect all the ♥♥♥♥ that in this game, there nothing that makes want to continue playing, no story that's interesting and no combat system that's enjoyable and certainly no visual scenery that's worth seeing.

it's a checklist of a game that's leaves you wondering " Why am I playing this " halfway through it, Buy it on sale or spare yourself the waste of time and don't buy it at all.

When you first enter Betrayer, you're struck by the awesome monochromatic art design, the atmosphere of foreboding, and you get filled with a great sense of adventure.

It doesn't last long however, each area being much the same as the last, with the same enemies, same mechanics, same scenery. Things that were once fun to run around and collect become a chore. Enemy types are very few, and do not scale well with the ever-increasing power of your arsenal. Monsters that were scary once soon become little more than roadbumps (unless playing on the highest difficulty). There is some decent flavor text scattered about in the side-quests, except the final story quest requires you to backtrack over every single area and solve every single mystery before you can beat the game, which once again turns something that could have been an interesting side-quest into a tedious chore.

I recommend only buying on a steep sale, or not at all.

I seldom write reviews, but this is a game that deserves to be heard of, played, and enjoyed. If anyone reads this, and wants to know anything about this game, just know that the trailer video is all you need to tell you if this game is for you. This isn't a AAA 60$ game by any means, but I would have happily dropped 15$+ for such a gem.

9/10 - A definite must have for 5$

This game is perfect in creating a specific atmosphere, especially when played in black and white, as intended. Graphic is astonishing and the light/dark (day/night) gameplays are a great idea, which fits perfectly into the game's mood.
The story is all right. Not great, not bad neither. Average. Intriguing at first, a little borring in the middle, with quite interesting ending which seems to depend a little bit on players choice.
It's definitly not an AAA game, but in my opinion a perfect first game of a new studio. Gameplay takes around 7-10 hours, which for $5 is worth a try. At least I am glad I played it. It was something new.

If you enjoy a good short horror story with a twist or two, then this is the game for you! "Investigations" are essentially that. A means of unvieling a series of (pretty damn good) short stories to the player mixed in with some combat and exploration.

The art design and sound are well done, and generate an appropriately spooky and haunting atmosphere. Being able to tune the amount of stylization was a good choice by the developer. I'll admit I was initially interested in the game because of the stark black, white, and red color scheme, but as I played I turned it to the more realistic color scheme. This only affects the daylight sections of the game. The night time is trichrome no matter the settings, balancing out the day sections.

The combat is surprisingly ok, but a little more feedback on your health would have been nice, as I died often without really realizing how injured I was.

I would have appreciated if the stories were tied to the enviroment a little more. Enviromental story telling is what videogames can really excell at, and while I can tell the developer made an effort to do that, I can only wish they had more time and a bigger budget to really flush out the world and details.

Mr. Skeltal Approves. 8/10

Betrayer is a nice game really. It can be pretty scary alot of the time, with these loud sounds and screams. The enemies are well balanced to each new settlement. But maybe the game can get boring a little after some hours, but you should just really get going, only because of the story. The story is put together well, and it has a nice map. But overall I rate this game 7/10.
