About This Game

Betrayer is a first person action adventure game that takes you to the New World at the turn of the 17th century.

The year is 1604. You sailed from England expecting to join a struggling colony on the coast of Virginia. Instead, you find only ghosts and mysteries. What catastrophe blighted the land and drained it of color and life? Where are the settlers and tribes who lived here?

Clue by clue, you must piece together the story of what befell this doomed settlement and find a way to set things right. You will be hunted by corrupted Conquistadors and ravening shadows as you explore an expansive wilderness in order to trace the brief, tragic history of the colony and search for survivors.

Key Features

  • Explore large, open environments teeming with danger and discovery. Chart your own course in search of clues and treasures.
  • Switch between two distinct worlds featuring different enemies, obstacles, and threats.
  • Wield early 17th century weaponry including muskets, bows, crossbows, and tomahawks. Upgrade your arsenal by purchasing or finding faster, deadlier, longer-ranged weapons.
  • Charge headlong into battle with guns blazing or pick enemies off quietly. A novel, movement-based stealth system lets you hide in plain sight or use the wind to mask your footsteps.
  • Equip ability-enhancing Charms to complement your play style, granting anything from extra health to faster movement to improved stealth.
  • Play with the default visual style for maximum eeriness and tension or customize the color and contrast settings to suit your tastes.

The good:

- Nice atmosphere
- Nice graphics (sometimes with some frame drops, even with a GTX 980. It uses Unreal Engine and runs on DX9. Doom (as example) runs more smoothy with all Maximum, 1080p and DX11 getting constant 60 fps). Lack of optmimitzation I would say. But nice visuals afterall.
- Search for ammo (destroying boxes or killing enemies), gold, treasures etc
- Use the shoop for upgrade your gear or for buy new weapons / ammo / items
- Stealth is a good choice. I really like more to kill (he he he) but in this game the enemies makes a lot of damage even on normal. 3 touches and you are dead.
- Aiming is excelent (with mouse and keyboard)
- Challenging
- Good AI
- Good dialogs
- Good story (ok, the ending is a little meh)

The bad:

- Can be repetitive (search here and there and only running with your feets)
Would be a good idea (in the future patches) to put a horse or something

7/10

Really enjoying this game. At first i thought it was a tech demo dubbed a game, but the gameplay is really immersive. The world is gorgeous, the gameplay mechanics are well thought out and the game has some very frightening moments.

Beautiful. that's my description of this game in one word, allow me to explain why i think so:
this game is an atmospheric horror stealth detective game, it is very rich in it's story, and is using very simplistic graphic options in order to set you 'in the mood' to be frightenned by a mere bush or shadow, it uses the black and white feature perfectly. altogether it is not a very difficult game for people who are skilled at stealth games, and yet it still manages to challege even skilled players (my personal oppinion).
a complete playthrough can be achieved withing 8 hours with most the steam achievements apart from the "Antagonist" which will take some more grindding, but yet again, the game is fair to the player and is capable of building up pressure and interest as you wonder deeper into the dark forsaken woods.

The atmosphere of Silent Hill and fun stealth and combat. Not too much variety in locations, though. Every location is just a lightly populated settlement.

Betrayer is a relatively generic stealth horror fps. That's not to say it isn't good, because it is. It has a certain charm to it despite everything being somewhat run-of-the-mill. The aesthetic is fantastic, playing in black and white with red accents is something different and it's sets a good tone. The horror element is pretty well done too, especially with the story(ies). If you're a fan of ninja-ing around with a bow and arrow with a bit of unnerving intensity, do it.

I don't even know what to say. It is sort of a stealth/adventure/mystery/horror game. But the real horror isn't things popping out at you, or the creepy atmosphere (both exist). The story of what happened to the people on this island is what remains with me, like a piece of lead in my heart. I can not say I recommend it as a game, because the game here is fairly simple and mostly easy. But if you ever want to see a macabre story unfold voer 6-9 hours, Betrayer has you covered.

As a side note, the stealth elements can be mostly ignored.

For $5 this game is a steal. I had to rely on a gameguide a couple of times, especially the ending, but overall game play was straight forward. The setting is great. I only wish they had speech instead of just text for the characters. Graphics and sound are really good. You use the sound direction to aid in defending yourself from your enemies. I got a good number of days play out of this and the story is satisfying. Once you discover what happened in the settlements it is quite disturbing and well written. I am left with strong feelings after finishing the game and it leavs you thinking.

I also feel that this game is very different than most game out there and rather unique. Once you figure out what you have to do at the end it all makes sense. The game does kinda leave you hanging without a lot of hints so I used this forum here to help me.

A brief summary of Betrayer:

This game is an excellent buy, especially for the price. Steeped in mystery and leaving much to the imagination, you are cast into a dreamlike version of the New World. This game is delighfully macabre, and offers increasing variations of challenge.
Despite what others may say about the game quickly losing flavor, I find that the various difficulty options give the game a little more depth. The game is somewhat strange to get used to at first, but you will quickly find yourself discovering exactly what you need to do next completely by accident. There is also an option to drop loot much like you do in Dark Souls when you die, making the game capable of greater difficulty on the hardest setting. The game explains very little, and some areas of the game will prey on your most primal fears as you creep through shadows and forests to find hidden clues and treasures, all the while wondering what might pop out at you next. The combat does offer a challenge at higher difficulty levels, and you will often feel panic set in as you are unexpectedly discovered by enemies, some that tactfully blend in with the environment.
The game does play pretty quickly, but has decent replay value with the several difficuly options and the option to switch to full color mode as well (although I personally love the gritty black and white texture because it reminds me of old horror films). Honestly, for a $5.00 game, I was very satisfied with my purchase, and I think Blackpowder will come out with more great games in the future with a little support.

I would say Betrayer is a solid 7/10. The ending and poor character dynamics really bogging it down, while the gameplay and atmosphere arev very well done and give it the life the main characters lack.

This game was very, very good. The atmosphere was amazing, the gameplay challenging and investigations exiting. The story was also amazing, until the end when it jumped the shark hardcore, with a "twist" that M. Night Shyamalan would even find stupid. I'm not saying it ruins the game as it obviously doesn't, it ruins the story. I found myself, A: wondering how the F bigfoot got ent-draught and B: what just happened. There was no lead or preparation it was just a slap to the face, especially as i had gone out of my way to collect everybit of evidence about the island.

It also doesn't help the character interactions are succinct some times and terse other times, no real bonding or development happens between Mr. Silent and Ms. Red. They both by the end feel empty, the only characters that every really felt alive were the dead ones, the wraiths, as they had interesting stories and contrasting morals.

The gameplay, while at times repetetive was very enjoyable. It forced me, until i got the Hunters longbow, to avoid confict or fight in a fire and retreat/hide fashion. The end boss battle was very muchly so, having me fleeing like a mad dog from the deer spectres, trying to reload my musket, as my arrows were spent faster than the french fighting morale.

Good game for the current price of $4.99. Don't expect too much from it as it does begin to feel repetitive after the first several maps.

Betrayer has a beautiful art style and a somewhat good combat system. The graphics and the ambiance are good in their own way and the mysteries you solve while completing quests are intelligently designed. Most of the dialogues hide clever and dark details on what you will soon discover.

However all the msytreries you solve and the quests completed will lead you to expect a decent and satisfying ending. I can tell you beforehand that it will not happen. The game has a unsatisfying ending and i don't say this just because i personally didn't like it. Why i say the ending sucks because the only character that exists in this game besides you and who happens to have a very well designed strong character will act out and add some cliché elements to story .

Overall i believe this is a good game that's worth a shot and i would gladly play if a sequel were to come out.

PROS:
Very eerie atmosphere.
Areas are completely open.
Interesting mystery to solve.
Scary twist.
Weapon variety and mechanics are good.
Alternate equipment options are very well thought out, useful and add to the game play.
You can rambo, steath it, mix it up. Anything goes and encounters are exciting and fun!
Price is so low for what you get.

CONS:
Enemy variety could be better.
Nothing is voice acted, allot of reading.
Replay value is limited.

BOTTOM LINE:
Totally recommend. Would love to see what the devs would do with a big budget. This is a great game from start to finish. It sucks you in at the very beginning and doesn't let go. I would have payed more then $5 for this game after having played it.

SIDE NOTE:
I long-bowed with 2x pistols, first play though very fun!

I really like the unique look this game has, and using my musket and bow.

I wish it was faster paced though, I find it's mostly walking and trying to get to locations on your map. With a bit of fighting thrown in, and some story too.
