About This Game

Betrayer is a first person action adventure game that takes you to the New World at the turn of the 17th century.

The year is 1604. You sailed from England expecting to join a struggling colony on the coast of Virginia. Instead, you find only ghosts and mysteries. What catastrophe blighted the land and drained it of color and life? Where are the settlers and tribes who lived here?

Clue by clue, you must piece together the story of what befell this doomed settlement and find a way to set things right. You will be hunted by corrupted Conquistadors and ravening shadows as you explore an expansive wilderness in order to trace the brief, tragic history of the colony and search for survivors.

Key Features

  • Explore large, open environments teeming with danger and discovery. Chart your own course in search of clues and treasures.
  • Switch between two distinct worlds featuring different enemies, obstacles, and threats.
  • Wield early 17th century weaponry including muskets, bows, crossbows, and tomahawks. Upgrade your arsenal by purchasing or finding faster, deadlier, longer-ranged weapons.
  • Charge headlong into battle with guns blazing or pick enemies off quietly. A novel, movement-based stealth system lets you hide in plain sight or use the wind to mask your footsteps.
  • Equip ability-enhancing Charms to complement your play style, granting anything from extra health to faster movement to improved stealth.
  • Play with the default visual style for maximum eeriness and tension or customize the color and contrast settings to suit your tastes.

The environmental effects and scenery while repetitive are very impressive and nice to look at. But for me, that is all this game really has going for it. The enemies are frustratingly overpowered and most of the gameplay is spent trying hopelessly to avoid them while navigating the wide open fields. I can see the appeal for very patient gamers and maybe it gets more fun eventually. It was not what I hoped for and holds little to no scare value.

I so wished I could get my ♥♥♥♥ to acctully play this title sometime, but I keep postpone it for some reason.

From the hours I have spent ingame I know its good; just not as good as Rocket League and Marvel Heroes that keep eat my time.

My experience during my first hour playing this game:
-uhh, i am not sure where to go, and this darkeness and skelly men are kinda sca...AHHH OMG THIS FLOATING SKELLY MANS IS KILLING ME ARRRRGGGHHH AAAHHHH PLZ DONT KILL ME!!
-alt+f4

My last hour playing this game:
-Alright I have killed 880/1000 enemies for my last achievement, time to take a stroll across the beautiful New England countryside no scoping spaniard zombiez.
-I proceed to merrilly trot along the outlying settlement trail, blasting spaniard zombiez which formerly made me pee my pants with fear with my black powder rifle and grenades, never letting them get close enough to damage me once
-kill 120 zombiez in one half hour
-All achievements complete!

But for real, this is a nice game, would certainly get it on a discount, not a whole lot of guides out there for it, so you have to figure out some things yourself, but it is fun once you get the hang of it, especially if you llike spoopy stuff. Played it 2x and got all achievements in about 14 hours.

Final verdict: skelly mans/10 would spoop again

Don't get fooled by the PR and nice video, the game is nothing like it is shown.I actually demanded a refund for this game.

Do not get fooled by all those folks giving it a "Thumbs Up" with an average of 2-3 hours logged.

The main attraction to this game is the story of course. There's a mystery to be solved and guess who has the task to solve it?

You start the game stranded on a beach. Pressing 'M' brings up a map with a bunch of red circles that are areas of interest.

Eventually you arrive at the first "hub" of the game where it's an empty colony populated only by one mysterious individual.

You have the ability to go into "Ghost Mode" meaning that there are technically two worlds: the one with colors and the black and white one you see in all those screenshots.

Unfortunately, even with a decent "horror" narrative (which is a highly questionable tag; not once did this game scare as much as bore me), the gameplay is downright rudimental. Aiming is hitscan and not accurate. The enemies' AI is... well let's just say that I'm doing a favor to those NPCs by saying any kind of AI was implemented in them.

I'm not sure who this game is for: there's no building elements; there's no voice-overs; no cut-scenes. It's just going to the Red Circles on your map and trying to figure out a mediocre narrative.

Mediocre FPS, bad easily fooled AI, slooow moving arrows.

Setting is great, would have been nice with voiced narration and NPC but this works well enough. “Detective” part of the game is…….run from one place to another. But the stories out there is as dark as promised. Have not finished the game when I am writing this but the main storyline have so far eluded me as I enter the third area. Would be nice with a skill tree as you solve mysteries everything for character progression is linked through gear.

As long as you are NOT searching for a BOOM headshot game but for something different out there i would recommend this.

Betrayer is an atmospheric game in which you wake up on a beach and attempt to solve the mysteries behind an abandoned colony. Also there are ghosts. How you ended up here and why you're not trying to get home is just another great mystery that'll never be solved. It took me a minute to figure out how you're supposed to approach the game, but it's not too difficult. Things get pretty convoluted and there's a lot of back-and-forth, but just remember to follow the investigations and hit X. Frequently. The game gets pretty repetitive, but the stories are intense enough to keep it interesting. This game is fun and just the right amount of creepy, I got it for a steal as a mystery key, and I can definitely say it was worth the forty cents. If you like mystery games or the visual style appeals, this isn't the worst way to spend eight hours or so. I took about ten, but let's just say I got myself ridiculously confused and spent a lot of time running in circles.

Really good game. Now you can configure the aspect of the game to look as you want, solving many problems to some people. The story is really good, will keep you wondering about what's going on and at its actual price, is a bargain.

A true hidden jewel of Steam!

This was a good game. It's more of a story and a very interesting art style than most other games. This playes like a point and click adventure in 3d, however there is a fair bit of battling as well.

This is very ambitious game which somewhat suffers because of its ambitions. It has great visual style, good sound design and very good storytelling. Stories of the dead colonists are dark, intriguing and they are unveiling in a very interesting way. The biggest issue with this game is its open world which makes atmospheric walks in the black-and-white forests VERY repetitive VERY soon. Consider this before buying - if you can overlook cliche side quests and grinding for enjoying overall visual and sound design plus engaging storytelling, then you will most likely enjoy it.

This is seriously a great game for its price. I got it on sale for $1 and it gave me about 10 hours of enjoyment. I often find most games boring and tedious and even though this game requires a lot of backtracking and running back and forth, I still found it pretty fun. In contrast I finished 'Rise of Tomb Raider' in about 12 hours and paid about fifty times as much money for the same amount of gameplay as what Betrayer had.

Betrayer is very unique. Everything from its colour palette to its mysterious story is something that I have not seen done anywhere before, and to date I haven't played really any game like it. The graphics were great and the game looked pretty amazing in 4K and played far better than I expected. I was really surprised at how well optimised the game is. I turned colour on for my playthrough because I felt that the high contrast and black and white visuals would hurt my eyes after a short period. Roughly half the game is still in black and white however even if you turn back on the colour, and I feel that this was a perfect balance.

For the most realistic colour I used the following settings: Dark Intensity (2.8), Light Intensity (1.1), Colour Saturation (1.0). I found these settings delivered the most perfect balance of light and shadows and provided me with a rich stealth experience.

It's the year 1604 so expect medieval weapons like bows and surprisingly enough 'guns'. The game is mostly a hide and seek, hunter and stealth styled game. You wake up shipwrecked on a beach and must find clues as to what catastrophe blighted the land.

This is a first person stealth game with enemies that are quite unique. I won't go into any detail as to spoil them because finding new and increasingly challenging enemies was very much part of the quality experience that I had. Some enemies are really quite creepy and a few particular encounters can be really tough.

Graphics: 8/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Story: 6/10
Pacing: 7/10
Replay Value: 3/10
Music: 2/10
Voice Acting: 0/10
Bugs: None really that I could find

My only complaints are due to all the running back and forth just to speak to NPCs again after getting an extra clue and also I found that the end-game is non-existent. Basically all you can do is clean up NPC enemies for achievements.

A lower-budget Far Cry in the 17th Century. I wouldn't say it's the scariest game I've ever played, but the fact that you and one other NPC are the only living, sane people in this colony gives it an eerie, suspenseful atmosphere. It has many murder mystery quests as well. The combat and stealth mechanics are a lot of fun, forcing you to think ahead. Finally, the graphics are impressive given its indie status.

Pros:
  • Good atmosphere
  • Two different dimensions and many lost soulds with mysteries to solve about their past
  • Decent combat
  • Good graphics for an indie game

Cons
  • While the combat was decent generally, at times it can be a pain in the bun (I'm talking about those savages)
  • Gets repetitive
  • Horrible stealth mechanics (Sort of forgivable because this isn't a stealth-centered game)

My score: 6/10

A very atmospheric arcadey shooter with survival elements and a twist: automatic guns haven't been invented yet. Can get repetitive at some point, but it keeps you going until you answer that one fatal question: "What the ♥♥♥♥'s going on here?"

PROS/CONS
+Very atmospheric. Interesting (literally) monochromatic approach adds to that, but it is optional, which is nice.
+Gameplay fits the setting AND is fun. I never thought musket firefighting could be thrilling.
+Hard, but balanced. 1 to 10 disadvantages eventually become 1 on 1, with progression and adaptation.
~~ It is not action packed, nor an horror game. It's something in between.
~~ Story may appear to be disconnected tales in the beginning. Might discourage immediatists.
- Stealth system is almost ignorable. Fire your first shot and perhaps remain unseen. That is, if you haven't been spotted on the move.
- It gets repetitive. Objectives are usually the same. Enemies hardly ever change. Plotline makes you keep moving.

8/10
