About This Game

In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.

The townspeople of Banished are your primary resource. They are born, grow older, work, have children of their own, and eventually die. Keeping them healthy, happy, and well-fed are essential to making your town grow. Building new homes is not enough—there must be enough people to move in and have families of their own.

Banished has no skill trees. Any structure can be built at any time, provided that your people have collected the resources to do so. There is no money. Instead, your hard-earned resources can be bartered away with the arrival of trade vessels. These merchants are the key to adding livestock and annual crops to the townspeople’s diet; however, their lengthy trade route comes with the risk of bringing illnesses from abroad.

There are twenty different occupations that the people in the city can perform from farming, hunting, and blacksmithing, to mining, teaching, and healing. No single strategy will succeed for every town. Some resources may be more scarce from one map to the next. The player can choose to replant forests, mine for iron, and quarry for rock, but all these choices require setting aside space into which you cannot expand.

The success or failure of a town depends on the appropriate management of risks and resources.

This game is one of my favorite games of all time. The original version was cool but somewhat boring and it's only when I decided to start using mods that it went over the top for me.

There are so many mods that add extras that make this game incredible. Check out the Colonial Charter mods, they are a must!

Devs please read this

yesterday i played Banished with mods it worked fine till today i went to play it again with the same mods as yesterday when it loads in to the game it crashes with "A fatal access violation has occurred in application-steam-x64.exe and the game cannot continue!" ive tried uninstalling the game disabling the mods and activating them again im really angry right now because i was really looking forward to playing this game today.

Review: Other than this problem its a 10/10 game really fun its a must play with mods too.

This game is fairly good simulator. Their are an abundance of mods that can be installed and utilized to enchance gameplay. Additionally, the graphics are ok but nothing to brag about.

I rate this game 8.5/10. If you enjoy games such as: Cities Skylines are Sims, than this would definitely be a good addition to your collection.

Banished is a nice little village managing game that requires careful planning on the part of the player to avoid mass die-offs of the populace. It is enjoyable, especially for the price. However, the game suffers from two major maladies:

1. Before you attain all seeds and livestock and have a sizeable population, there comes a tipping point after which the game is no longer challenging. Early on, it is a struggle to get your people through the first few winters. You must manage your villagers very carefully, since any misstep could result in total collapse of the village. Once you have some crops growing, a few hunting cabins and gatherers's huts, it is all but assured that your village will never fail. Severe mismanagement can still result in the deaths of large portions of your population, but only if you don't know what you're doing.

2. The game's mechanics tend to break down after you've gotten into the later stages of your community's development when your village has a large population and most of the seeds and livestock. For example, when you try to create multiple city centers on a large map, it is possible that the villagers will end up spending most of the day walking to their assigned job, causing massive inefficiency and probably resulting in a mass die-off of some sort.

Pretty fun, though.

Enjoyable, with plenty of mods to change the game if you desire. One downfall is that not a lot happens, so can become a bit mundane overtime. Get it while on sale and it will be worth it.

A good city builder is often the kind of game you can relax with. It's like an ant farm or a fish tank, you have a certain level of input, but from there you just watch nature take its course. Banished is a deceptively relaxing game, with its pastoral themes and gentle, lilting soundtrack. Beneath the inviting exterior however is a persistent test of your planning abilities, one that can have you sweating before you know it.

"Banished" refers to the tiny group of country folk you start the game with, a group of exiles in a wild, untamed land. From a humble start you help them assemble food, shelter, and comfort for themselves against the harsh winters. This is a personal-level game, similar to Tropico or Children of the Nile, where you can follow each individual resident from their house to their work and back. You'll also find elements of the Anno games, with each home and structure having its own inventory of goods that must be balanced against the consumption of the ever-growing population.

This is where the game can make you panic, because I wasn't kidding about the harsh winters. Your people need food, firewood, clothes, tools, medicine, and other goods and services to survive and prosper, and their needs change by season. When winter comes you'll see a run on the food and firewood stores that can quickly leave people starving and freezing if you haven't adequately prepared. Shortfalls can be extremely hard to recover from, because farms are planted and harvested by seasons, orchards take years to grow from saplings, and your livestock ages as your residents do.

Once you master the balance of goods for your populace, the rest of the challenge is up to you. Banished gives you access to all the buildings right up front, only gating them behind required quantities of the basic building materials. You can have your people farming, fishing, herding, hunting, gathering, brewing, trading, and so on in just a few years, and then aside from the seeds and livestock you have to trade for, you'll have seen everything. From that point on the challenge is entirely in balancing your resources as your village expands indefinitely. The margins get thinner and thinner and curveballs like nomads joining your community en masse can throw off your plans, but the basic rules of expansion do not change.

The magic of the game is that you'll play for a few hours, set up a perfectly functional town with all the buildings and services, put it down... and then find yourself coming back to expand again and again. The quaint graphics and simple mechanics make it a delight to simply keep building out further and further. There are no scenarios or campaigns, just you and the random maps to fill, and even without anything pushing you forward to fill them you might find yourself inclined to do just that. Banished ended up being one of the more addictive city builders I've played, making up for simplicity with more than enough charm.

Great game. Period.

I recommend trying out Colonial Charter Mod to enhance the game, if you will feel a bit bored with standard buildings/crops.

Deepest respects to a single developer who created the game.
He managed to create a product which no multi-million dollar development studio could do for many long years.

i don't write reviews, but i like this game. so i will definitely give it a thumbs up. but that's not why i'm here, i just want to make a comment that i've read 4 reviews in 2 minutes along the lines of the first 20 to 50 hours where fun.... blah blah blah. not worth 20 dollars. WTF, you enjoy a game for 50 hours, then ♥♥♥♥♥ that it's 20 dollars, what other form of entertainment has that kind of return, basically 2.5 hours a dollar.

I'm guessing none of you guys have ever frequented a movie theatre

This game is like building a house of cards. Not too hard to begin, you think you're doing well. Nearly 200 population, full happiness.

Then some un-noticed event occurs, maybe a little low on logs, iron, coal. Maybe running low on labour causing things to stack up.

Suddenly, you have no tools, work is down to 50% but your population is the same.

But not for much longer, as without tools you run out of logs (so firewood), coal, coats, food, everything. Poeple are dying left and right.

Now you have under 30 populatioon trying to run everything!

Fun, fun game, but trickier than it looks!

-Brought game
-Opened game
-Skipped tutorial because I'm ruthless and went straight in to a medium world
-It didn't take long to get use to everything, from getting slaves to build houses to 5 year old children cutting down trees
-Built a very nice village then everyone died of starvation

-Started another world made sure there was plenty of food and resources this time
-Made a even better village
-Everyone dies by a blizzard

Gg everything is op
10/10 will play again to have my dreams of a perfect village destroyed

Vote me to be hokage

Amazing game, with difficulty settings which can make it a casual almost meditative game all the way to a nail biting struggle for survival for these poor Banished souls.

A nice city builder based in the medieval times. No wars to worry about, just natural disasters. Plays nicely and has good tutorials if you're new to the genre.

I was a little bit disappointed to find out that this game is already finished since I thought it was still in beta. The potential of this game is crazy but they abandoned it with a terrible AI and bugs all over the place.
Nonetheless I had a lot of fun with this little game. The ones that sometimes miss Anno or Rollercoaster can revive old feelings with this. Others should probably just buy a more complex RTS game.
Its fairly easy to build up an economy but there is literally no endgame content. I built the highest tier buildings in about 2 hours and then started to get bored... there are no opponents so all you have to do is watch the seasons go by and hope for a trader to offer you sheep ^^
