“Generously stuffed with player-made emergent moments on the battlefield and an incredible sense of place, Verdun is not just a great take on one of history’s more marginalised wars, it also happens to be a resoundingly solid shooter in its own right too.”
9.0 – Gamewatchers - John-Paul Jones

“I became immersed in its careful pacing and focus on squad movement.”
Gamespot - Cameron Woolsey

“Verdun's given me an excellent understanding of what a mess World War I was. Verdun's Frontlines mode really is sort of ingenious—and I think this is definitely one worth checking out, especially if you're already interested in the subject matter.”
PCWorld - Hayden Dingman

About This Game

Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic First World War setting. The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield experience, immersing you and your squad into intense battles of attack and defense.
The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916. The game offers 4 distinct game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch, and Squad Defense. There are also many historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, horrendous gore, and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium.

The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity. The realistic trenches are challenging to fight in and require tactical cunning to capture and defend. The Entente and Central Powers strive to gain control of frontline sectors. In one battle you’ll find yourself rushing the enemy trenches during an offensive action in order to gain ground, while in another you might be defending your recently conquered ground against a fierce enemy counter-attack.

Players can choose to be part of one of the many squad types in the game, each of which have their own distinct tactical roles. By working together with your friends, you can earn experience that improves the power and versatility of your squad. As you gain more experience fighting and get promoted in rank, you also earn Career Points which you can use to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

In the Attrition game mode, the Entente and the Central Powers are pitted against each other in a single battle. Each side has a number of tickets which represents the amount of manpower they have. When a player is killed and respawns, a ticket is deducted from the side they belonged to. When a side has no more tickets, players of that side cannot respawn - the last side standing wins!

The Rifle Deathmatch is a free-for-all game mode, where all players are pitted against each other in a thrilling contest of skill using only bolt-action rifles.

In the Squad Defense mode, the player along with three squad-mates will have to defend a position as long as they can against endless waves of AI controlled attackers.

Verdun key features include:
Realistic World War 1 gameplay: Authentic weaponry with realistic bullet physics, skill based weapon handling, gore, poisonous gas with a claustrophobic gas mask experience, horrendous gore and artillery barrages
Tactical squad-based FPS: Unique squad leveling system, distinct squad types and roles, voice chat
True trench warfare: Real-time dynamic frontline with momentum-based attack and counter-attack gameplay
Authentic World War 1 setting: Typical WW1 music and style, historical battlefields set on the Western Front
Challenging game modes: Team-based Frontline, tactical Attrition, skill-based Rifle Deathmatch and desperate survival in Squad Defense

The gameplay is as immersive and gritty as it can get with elements such as realistic gore that portrays the true horror of the 1st World War Battlefield. This feature can naturally be disable if preferred. The authentic weapons need to be handled with skill, as they each feel differently and there are no floating crosshairs to aid your aim. Also, the realistic bullet physics require you to lead your shots when firing on a moving target at long range. In the event of a gas attack, you need to put on your gas mask, which impairs your view and gives you a very claustrophobic experience. And if getting shot or gassed isn’t enough, sudden artillery barrages that are called in by NCO’s can pin you down if you’re caught in the open and might obliterate your entire squad. This unforgiving war isn’t for the faint hearted!

Team play is what lies at the heart of Verdun. When you start a game, your first choice is to fight for either the Entente or the Central Powers. You can form one of the different squad types available to that side with up to three of your friends. Each squad has a specific tactic that is based on the historical units of that time. Depending on your squad’s type, players can choose a specific role within the squad, complete with historically accurate attire, weapons and special abilities. The more Co-op experience you and your squad mates earn together, the more powerful your squad will become and the better abilities will be unlocked. This progression is also shown visually as you and your squad get more advanced uniforms. You will also earn Career Points, which can be spent to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

The true WW1 battlefield experience has been captured in a real-time dynamic frontline, set in historically accurate locations of the Western Front. These frontline maps are comprised out of multiple sectors that can be captured by either side. Staying true to the typical attrition warfare of that time, both sides attack and counter-attack each other in turn, compelling you to defend each captured sector of trenches!

The development team has done extensive field research at Verdun and has been advised by knowledgeable historians to make sure Verdun is as historically accurate as it can get. Uniforms have been recreated to the tiniest details, the weapons are modeled to exact references and the maps use realistic World War 1 props and terrain layouts. Also, everything in the game has been tailored to recreate the grim atmosphere that is so typical of WW1; Gloomy clouded skies, an immersive interface combined with realistic sounds, accurate native voices that evoke the feeling of actually being there in the trenches, mud covered - trenches whilst peering over your rifle to spot the enemy.

Okay first of all I recommend this game, everyone who likes this setting should buy it and try it because it is a good game. But there are so many bad things that need to get fixed and improved makes the game unplayable for me,

It feels like Early access. The hitboxes are ♥♥♥♥, the cover seems pointless because you are going to get shot anyway, the recoil feels terrible, the engine is cluncky, to go up a single step you have to jump and expose yourself to the entire enemy team. there are many more minor and major bugs that need to get fixed immediately. I honestly don't know if I want to keep playing this game unless they want to fix it,

a lot of players will type "BuIIshit" in games because it's true the game is a big pile of buIIshit.

But.. The game is still good and I'm excited to play Eastren front, and please my final request remove the super glue on barbed wires.

After spending many hours with this game I have concluded that this is one of the best fps games available right now. The combat is challenging but not frustrating. It also has a very useful squad system which encourages teamwork and coordination with the members of your squad. Gameplay aside, this is the most accurate representation of a historical setting I have seen in a long time. The attention to the most minute of details is what makes this game stand out. The uniforms, weapons, sounds, maps, etc. are all extremely accurate to history which pleases me immensely.

This is not a game for everyone. But it is a game for when Ye want a taste of the trench-experience, which, I tell Ye, is not like any mainstream FPS. Ye get this game for the trench mud and blood.

I was ready to refund this game after the 2 hour trial period. I am very glad I didn’t, it took some time getting used to it and liking it. This shooter is not like many others out there, it is very original, which is of course a good thing. The first good thing about this game is it’s setting of WWI, a period that not a lot of games explore. The gameplay is dark, brutal and unforgiving. With extra gore enabled you can see body parts missing and screams of agony in the background. Trench warfare is what makes this game unique - where troops advance or retreat trench by trench and where camping and careful advancement is a must. One shot kills (or a few with a pistol) also adds to the intensity and different approach from your regular shooter. The squad progression system is also very unique where you need to stick with the same people if you want to level up your squad (lvl 100 max). The higher the squad level the better abilities the whole squad enjoys. The roles within the squad can be unlocked with skill points you get as you level up.

Verdun is far from perfect though. The main problem is the player base. On a daily the game has 600 - 1000 players. Voice chat users are pretty rare - even though it is an extremely squad based game people don’t communicate. The game is very unpolished - there are many glitches that made me die numerous times and hit registry is not the greatest. The squad leveling system even though original has its flaws - because of the small player base and not knowing anybody that plays, it is hard to level up the squad.

The game is very solid but the standard price of $28 CAD is ridiculous. That is the main reason why it has such a small community. I think this game should compete with Insurgency at $10 CAD and go on frequent sales of $5. For that price I would pick it up.

I lift my head slightly above the trench *gets shot*
I lay prone in our trench *exploded*
I get stuck in wire and panic *die from wire*
I spawn in their trench *gets shot*
I look over my trench to call artillery *dead, denied*
I try to stab an afk guy *nope, dead*
I spawn in wire *ffs, dead*
I spawn in gas, forgot the key for my gas mask *suffocated, dead*
I run all the way to a good look over to see the battlefield, guess what. BOOM EXPLODED.
DEAD, DEAD, DEAD, DEAD, DEAD, Repeat. This is the only time you'll ever be majorly unlucky.

Then the Magic happened.
I stand in the open outside my trench, I survive for 5 minutes getting 2 kills, so happy!
I went 2 kills - 58 deaths that day. Yes, I recommend this game if you want to get obliterated, every 1 second as you spawn.

Dairy of a soldier in Verdun (the game you bleeding idiot, not the place!)

Day 1:
Today I led my squad, a rifleman, a machine-gunner and a bomber out into combat. We were asked to assault a position. So naturally I ordered the men to move into a certain location and called an artillery strike. The artillery strike went on to kill every man on the other bloody side.

Day 2:
I was given the order to attack again. We jumped out the trench and crawled through no-mans land. Taking only 3 hours. I could hear a German yelling right next to me in the trench and proceeded to stand up to shoot. I was then shot several times by a man across the other side of the ♥♥♥♥ing map.

Day 3:
My men would not advance at all. They refused to leave the god damn trench. What a bunch of pansies. I then proceeded to hop out and was shot several times BY THE SAME ♥♥♥♥ING MACHINE GUN

Day 4:
I'm surrounded by dead corpses yelling and screaming after a deadly sector artlillery strike. I prayed to God the Germans weren't in the trench. Suddenly a man around the corner came and shoved a FELDSPATEN up my ♥♥♥.

Day 5:
I was fired from my job.

great way to hype yourself to BF1 but cannot be compared to it because from what I can see they are two very different games in playstyle.

Verdun is a unique game from all WW1 games, it gives you trench warfare but action along with it, it may seem a bit high in price but it's definately worth it!

This game is literally the reason I still have faith in 1) the indie gaming community 2) the historical community 3) the world at large. Thank you Verdun devs, thank you four-player based squad gameplay, and thank you Verdun community - never change! 2000+ hours since Steam Greenlight, and it's only getting better: love the free content, the gore update, the meticulously beautiful maps, the personal touch of the three core developers, the surreal weirdness, and most of all the constant attention to "realism" (whatever THAT is) that has been a priority since the beginning. It's gritty, and that's how war is too, as I understand from a distance. Keep it that way. As a PhD student in history, I could not support this game more. Thanks for making it Linux friendly - and bugs be damned. This game comes 100% recommended.

I quit playing FPS games a long time ago because they just didn't keep my interest anymore. Too many times I spent the money and then got bored before I got my money's worth. Most new FPS games feel like re-skins of the same games we've all been playing for years... and I just couldn't get into it anymore.

I'd never played a WWI FPS before and it was something I always thought would be pretty cool. So when I saw this pop up on Steam I followed it for a while. After a few months I was bored and looking for a new game so I decided to take a chance on Verdun. Personally I feel like it's the best game purchase I've made in a while. This has been the most fun I've had with a FPS game since I can remember.

The trench warfare is just a totally different feel than anything I've ever played before. The pace of combat changes constantly depending on whether you are attacking or defending - and there are multiple ways to attack and defend depending on your load out. The squad system is actually pretty unique too.

The learning curve isn't too steep - and so far the community has been pretty cool.

I highly recommend this game!

“Trench fighting is the bloodiest, wildest, most brutal of all ... Of all the war's exciting moments none is so powerful as the meeting of two storm troop leaders between narrow trench walls. There's no mercy there, no going back, the blood speaks from a shrill cry of recognition that tears itself from one's breast like a nightmare.”

― Ernst Jünger, Storm of Steel

This is a damn well made indie game. While not as polished or smooth as other AAA FPS titles, this is definitely the best WW1 FPS out there, and will continue to be even after Battlefield 1's release. The squad system is well fleshed out, and doesn't leave out many major combatants, with great variety of different classes and tactics to choose from. The classes range from machine gunners, to officers that can call in artillery/gas attacks and add "buffs" to nearby team mates, to melee/ close range focused assault classes, to sniper units. The different equipment and class types make it feel like you need to "roleplay" your role, as that's what your equipment is for. Leveling up these classes through play adds a neat progression system that gives your character more weapons, more abilities, etc. In addition to class leveling, there is a very unique squad leveling system that makes it feel like you are part of an epic war, as they are persistent across matches. Teamwork is essential, and you really get the sense that your squad is its own self sufficient unit in a much larger conflict.

The variety of squad types is awesome too, ranging from U.S. Doughboys to elite Alpenjägers, to the scrappy Belgians, to the rough and tough French Poilus. As your squad levels up, your player models become better armed and tougher looking, just like a squad would in real life. The ability to name squads whatever you want, from "Donald Trump's Royal Guard" to "The Really Bad Marksmen" or something adds a lot of personality and a feeling of pride as you fight with other players on your team. It's so cool to see so many factions represented in an accurate, respectful manner, I can't believe France is out of BF1 while the Americans are in, makes no god damn sense to me.

Didn't play this much in Early Access, but now it's a fun, engaging, harrowing team based experience that anyone who has a passing interest in WW1 should try out!

Fantastic game. It truly gives the feel of a real world war 1 combat experience. The weapons are balenced and time accurate, all of the soldier models and faction uniforms look great. The only things I would add to make it better is more players per game, more maps like the somme, vimy ridge, and passchendaele, maybe more customisation for personal soldiers to use in game, use of stationary weapons (machine guns & artillery), and maybe a bit more rain. Overall great game for the gamer who likes realistic world war 1 combat over fast paced and full of automatics.

With only a few hours I can still say this game is worth buying, incredible gameplay, smooth mechanics and great models. If you're like me and saw battlefield 1 as a re-skinned ww2 shooter than this is your game! Verdun is the true ww1 experience, highly recommend it to anyone who's tired of fast paced shooters with no reason to use tactics or teamwork.
