What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“M2H and BlackMill Games took the opportunity to work with you on polishing the game Verdun. By entering Steam Early Access in September 2013 we managed to get the attention needed to vastly improve the gameplay and user experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Verdun will leave Early Access April 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We are set to take Verdun to the next level in terms of visuals, but also mature its gameplay to become a more tactical game in which our unique squad co-op gameplay flourishes. In addition there will be more maps and more squad types available at launch.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Verdun is very stable in its current form with all of the gameplay fully operational. We're focussing on polishing the entire experience some more and squash the last bugs. Mainly the immersion will be massively improved in the months to come.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Game will remain at the same price point.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Since the alpha in April of 2013 we have continuously involved the community. It has helped shaping the tactical frontline gameplay that mimics the trench warfare. We have taken many community features and implemented them into the game.”

Update March 19 - V200

Another great update just went live. Not only are we exterminating bugs and polishing up the game (incl. more GUI updates), we are also adding new features to give you a more immersive and balanced game and offer more gameplay opportunities. Some noteworthy ones are;

Spawn points
When spawning on a squadmate you will copy his/her stance. Some predefined spawnpoints now start crouched or prone.

Autobalance
An overpowered team will receive a chat mesasge and penalty. Which includes a 10% score reduction for every player too many and a +1 second spawntime for every player too many starting at 3 players difference.

Private match improvements
We added more customization options for the private matches such as a timeleft command and friendly fire setting.

You can have a look at the entire list on our Changelog

About This Game

Verdun is a squad-based multiplayer FPS set in First World War (WW1) . The game is inspired by the infamous battle of Verdun in 1916.

The game includes historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, historical maps based on sectors of the Western Front and authentic uniforms and equipment. The game immerses you into one of the bloodiest conflicts fought in Europe.

The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield for tactical squad play in the gritty Frontlines game mode, and raw pure gameplay in the rifle Deathmatch.

The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity, where you are levelling different types of squads, each with your own tactics and roles. The realistic trenches are an extra challenge in the fight, where teamwork and tactical cunning are essential for success. Drive your enemies from their trenches and dominate the Western Front!

Verdun key features include:
Unique World War 1 gameplay: Authentic weaponry, characters levelling and realistic historical battlefields set in France and Belgium
Tactical squad-based FPS: Squad assembling and levelling
True trench warfare: Real-time dynamic frontline; momentum-based attack and counter-attack gameplay
WW1 atmosphere: Typical WW1 music, art, units, grim battlefields and an immersive user interface
Challenging game modes: Dynamic Frontline and rifle Deathmatch
Chemical weaponry: Tactical gas deployment and immersive gas mask experience

The team has done extensive research in the field at Verdun and has been advised by knowledgeable historians to make sure Verdun is historically accurate. Uniforms have been recreated to the tiniest details, weapons modeled to exact references and maps created from real-life elements.

Teamplay is what lies at the heart of Verdun. You fight for either the Entente or the Central Powers. Within each side up to 4 players can form 1 of the different squad types available to that side. These squads each have a specific tactic, and are based on real historical units of that time. Depending on your squad’s type, players can choose a specific role within the squad, complete with the historical attire, weapons and abilities. The more experience (XP) you and your squad mates earn together, the more powerful your squad will become..

The true experience of the battlefields of WW1 have been captured in a real-time high level dynamic frontline. This frontline map is compromised out of multiple sectors that can be captured by either side. Staying true to the seemingly hopeless situation of that time, both sides attack and counter-attack each other in turn, so you will be forced to defend each captured sector of trenches!

Everything in the game has been tailored to really reinforce that grim atmosphere so typical of WW1. Gloomy clouded skies, an immersive interface combined with realistic sounds and accurate French, English or German voices evoke the feeling of actually being there, mud covered in the trenches whilst peering over your rifle to spot the enemy.

Verdun is one of the best games iv' played. im obsessed with WWI/II! everything about the great wars interests me, The Guns, the Armour, the Places, the armys, the Individual peoples stroys! its all realy special. and when i saw this game Ages ago, i shouved it on my Wishlist streight away! But it was only Up untill recently that i was Killing my self for not buying it! because My mate did it for me!
Special thanks to RG | ConolaCoil (name may change), Your a real Goons mate! Anyway, the game. Verdun is the single most Acurate WWI FPS iv ever seen. Its actualy Quite scary, how close it gets to the real Horrors that they had to face for us, them soldiers XD.
One can easely get Completely and Fully imersed in this game. Things like Being able to say things in game like little comands & Misc' frazes like a battle Cry (wich depending on what side your on will determin what could be said) & Laughing, or just saying "good Shot, Mate!" or "I cant Believe ya Hit that!" in a young British dudes exited Voice. the game just makes you smile at those points
but when your teammate Blows that Defening Wistle to sound the charge, You pray and Run like they taught you to in boot camp, strieght at the enimy with tiers of fury in your eyes! Guns blazing, its gonna ither be You or them.

Once you get the game, Even the Main menu is Awsomely cute and Acuarate. Your Menu sits floating with a Background of the Trenches were you have been spending the Nights of your Service. Music from the radio floats from the right, and the crackling fire and murmering sets the mood. its realy interactive and special, like when you go to the Options, it takes you to a small Dugout roomwere what seems like Your Personal items are. Its realy cool!
to get straight into the action, dead in the middle of the top bar is "find battle". Smash that one with your Mouse, and you can pick out of Death match, just Unrealistic cod like DM, and Front line, Awsome staged battles that Use Squads and souch. you Press front line and it will bring you to a map layed out on the table in your Home trench. Find battles in one of there famous locations like Flanders. Once you've done that, You have to join A squad. Each squad has its Own name, made by people who have created them. You join one, and Play a roll for that squad in a battle. You join the battle, and Diferant individual squads are on ither team. your orders dont get mixed up with theres, however the Over all goal effects all in the team (Take Ground and Prosper!). You can even go through Tiers of Classes, giving you something to play for in your time in service. each Class has 3 tiers and once unlocked, the tiers loadout is avalable 24/7. the tiers will introduce items relevent to the class, aka a grenedier will be upgraded with a Pistol of some sort and more Grenades, to get closer faster and LOB em in! a dangerous job. and rifleman can upgrade with Bayonet's and scopes, making Trench warefare as scary as Peeking your head over the trench lines.
Everything about this game i love! even the guns have souch attention to detail, and realism is beond messure here. you dont always ♥♥♥♥ the Bolt on your rifle ither, like Automaticly in cod. you dont auto reload, everythings up to the player, like how it was in WWI. the Guns themselfs are Works of Art, looking Beautifuly realistic and sounding like it too. and its the same with the landscapes! The Trenches themselfs have steps were peopel would peak over and fire, little alcoves were people would take cover, barbed wire everywere inwich you can get stuck, and with A lot of movement tear yourself open and DIe! its all wonderfull!
I happened to be more patiant when it comes to games for some reson, but i would think that Those who are used to cod may not Like this as much mainly because if you try some stuff that you can do in cod in this, well it normaly doesnt work and will ruin the game for you.
so basicaly, if you want an awsome game to do with WWI thats attention to detail is Beond measure, Grab this. if your not, grab cod 1.

First off this game is early access so it's not perfect. However for the most part is is a very good first-person shooter. If you are looking for a good WWI FPS, this is it. Though it is not simulater quality, it is still a very stimulating and enjoyable game.

Second, this game hostess a higher quality of gamers. So for the most part you don't have 13 year old kids telling others to "Get rekt" or swear every chance they get. Every now and then there will be one or two of those people, wich is unavoidable. However there is a mute option but it is not like other games and may take some time to figure out. Though I'm sure if you ask in-game there will be people to help.

Third, this game does include clans such as 'KK', 'BW' and '+', and elite players. '+Zab' is one you may hear a lot about.

Finaly, at times it can be enjoyable, agrovating or however you want to put it. Overall it is one of the best WWI FPSs you can get.

Imagine having to crawl through mud, your future uncertain, holding your breath while tracking an advancing enemy running frantically between hills, trenches, and explosions a hundred meters away and with a single bullet, like the reaper, you claim them. That is Verdun and it is as realistic as it'll ever get. Verdun is an absolute must for any FPS or WW1 enthusiast. It immerses you into the era from the beginning with the music and atmosphere. The graphics are breathtaking despite my PC's shortcomings. Verdun has a great unlock system that is easy to pick up and utilize with classes and a plethora of WW1 weaponry. The controls are intuitive if you've ever played an FPS and the gameplay is a thrill. I'm looking forward to see what the developers at BlackMill Games and M2H have in store for this game.

I love playing Verdun. It's frenetic, in your face, brutal, compelling, sounds amazing and genuinely makes me feel like my ♥♥♥ is on the line.. I'm a long time Battlefield 1942 / Vietnam player with the occasional Modern Warfare mod from years ago.. years of early Counter Strike AWP'ing around.. I played Battlefield 4 multiplayer very briefly and went back to Battlefield P4F - Call of Duty Advanced Warfare got all of 45 minutes before I said 'what is this cr*p' and went back to finding something interesting which is where I came across Chivalry Medieval Warfare and thoroughly enjoyed the 'oh.. he's going to hurt me' gritty close range fighting but always felt it a bit cliched, with Verdun it's got the intensity of Chivalry without the moment to look each other over.. if you stare into someones eyes in Verdun one of you is going to die and that happens a lot.

The maps? Glorious.. some are wide and expansive rolling fields of carnage, some are watery graves of face crawling, all with layer upon layer of attack and riposte.

My only frustration is people seem to not acknowledge the game for what it is - a rolling to and fro of attack and defence - this means as the attack phase timer ticks down, 5 or 10 team mates will be laying prone, meters from the enemy trench seemingly frozen in space and time.. if the timer ticks out and you haven't got the trench, you loose your attack wave (and eventually the game).. the historical trauma of WWI was the obscene body count due to hurling massive numbers against each other .. as this is a WWI game, sitting on your ♥♥♥ meters from the objective does nothing except frustrate your team mates and amuse your enemy. Get with the program - Take the trenches (and die trying).

It might be a worthwhile feature to have a 'ground covered / advanced' counter so everyone could see who was covering the most forward ground and potentially, that NCO's could execute those who refuse to attack. You want to hide in a trench and not go forward when the whistle blows? Bullet for you buddy.

Good Game, reminds me of playing the early WWII FPS games such as Call of Duty and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Infantry warfare with out all the stupid gimmicks of todays shooters. Takes Teamwork to win but fun regardless of the outcome.

Verdun is a huge breath of fresh air in the shortage of worthwhile WW1 games. Verdun provides great map design, historically acurate and realistic weapons and mechanics (e.g. chemical warfare, trench warfare, and artillery) and intense long and short distance skirmishes. Great buy.

Verdun attaches great Importance to the History of WW1. Not only you can read interesting Information in the menu about the Weapons in WW1 and the Soldiers that fought in it, the Developers made sure that the Maps are similar to the real combat areas at that time. You can expect very intense Trenchfights, this Game is no Action Shooter like most of the other FPS-Games out there and you will have a damn hard time at first, even if you already have FPS experience. Teamplay is essential to win here and you should learn to play your Squadrole the right way. Every Squadmember has its own Task to lead the team to victory and you need to help out each other to make the best of each role. Basically the 4 roles are NCO, Sniper, Machinegunner and Grenadier. There is a difference, depending on which Nation and Team you play on. For each Nation and Soldier you can pick 1 of 3 unique Arsenals, which have to be unlocked with career points that you earn in the game. Leveling up is another Part of the Game that makes it highly addictive. There are Many Perks for each Soldier and a total Level of 100 to achieve. Also you can earn lots of different Medals after a Battle, that get saved on your Account. Some of them are already and others will be needed to get Steam Achievements.

After about 20 Hours played so far i can say that Verdun is running pretty good for a Beta, Bugs do exist, but none of them was really worth talking about it. I guess it makes most fun with 4 friends who are using Skype or TS but most Players of the Community are nice guys, so you can always join a Game on your own too.

Pros:
- Realistic and intense Squadbased WW1 FPS Shooter.
- Developers who really put effort into this Game. (if you are lucky you are able to play against or with them)
- No Crashes, only minimal Bugs even now in Beta.
- Addictive Level Up System, this game will entertain you a long time.
- Not one single Cheater/Hacker detected until now.
- Frontline Mode is the most tactical Gamemode i've seen in a Shootergame.
- Harcore Mode, If you get hit, most times one Bullet is enough to die or to kill.

Cons:
- Soldiers have only a few different looks.
- Dying Animations look strange sometimes.
-After the latest Patch, the Gunsounds sound strange, more like Paintball or Airsoftweapons. (Many players already criticised that, will hopefully get fixed with the next Patch)
- It is hard to get out of the barbwire, once you got stuck there. I don't know if it's meant to be that way,but to me it is annoying. You either bleed out there within a few seconds if you move, you get shot as a stillstanding target, or you manage to slowly get out of the wire.
- It would be nice if the Animations of your Teammates were better. For Example, on my Screen the Soldier beside me is aiming to the right side but shot an enemy on the left side. It would be easier to make out enemies if you could see where your Teammates are shooting at. What i mean is, the Weapons of your mates should point at the target they are actually shooting at.
- Not that many Players so far, Servers are pretty empty until evening. (EU Servers)

I guess most of my Con's will be fixed with the upcoming patches, that Barbwire thing is probably meant to be that way.

If you are a Friend of FPS shooters, or you wanna get a taste of how it must have felt to fight in those Trenches you should buy that Game. I bought it for ~20 Euros and it is worth every Cent of it.

This game is truly unique. I fell in love with this game ever since I first purchased it for around 1.74$ on a steam sale. The game has gotten better over the months, and devs actually care about the community and history of the game.
The only bad thing about the game is since the shift to unity 5 engine, many people including myself have been experiencing a lot more crashing.
9/10 when the game works

Alright, this is how this game is:

As someone who started out playing alone, and now plays in one of the "competitive" clans (it's a beta, there's only so much we can do, but vet players know who's who), I've had most of the experiences you can have in Verdun. It starts out difficult, absolutely, and a lot of the bad reviews you see are there for two reasons:

1) They only played a few maps, couldn't get over the learning curve in that amount of time, and quit

2)They forgot it's EARLY ACCESS, yes, it has bugs, it says that in the pop up right when the game starts

Now then, the learning curve can be extremely steep. Expect to die, and expect to die often. You will be killed on occasion the moment that you spawn due to spawning on the NCO into enemy fire or unlucky spawns into grenades/mortars/artillery fire/etc.

This game is about playing smart. Going rambo/gung-ho as you would in CoD/Halo/etc rarely works. You want to move up, use plentiful covering fire, watching for movement, and don't fire from the same place too many times. If you stick it out and learn to play, and especially if you can find a good group to play with (feel free to add me, I'm happy to help new folks), then this game can be extremely rewarding.

Updates are fairly frequent, so the devs are hard at work.

It also has the buff of being a rather accurate WW1 game, which we know is uncommon compared to WWII. So, give it a try, expect to die, and learn the game. The community is pretty solid for the most part, and we're happy to help new players and answer their questions.

10/10 - Would recommend if you have the patience to handle a learning curve and occasional bugs.

Game, is good, alltough it gets boring after a while, there is little to no bullet drop, so u get killed real easy. You die from one shot to the leg.

What the game needs to add is roleplay, Or a gamemode like trench survival, where u get to maintain a trench, and ranks would be in order and launch attaks when the team is ready.

If u are in to War games, or like ww1 then i recomend it, it has alot of connection issues that needs to be fixed otherwise i would not recomend it to avrage gamers.

Honestly, I love this game. It's great, it's new, it's everything it claims to be... That is, unless it claims to run smoothly.

I can't complain about anything BUT the frames skipping for what feels like every two f***ing seconds (Everything else is great, and I do have a good computer that runs most new games at 60+ fps).

At it's current state, I don't recommend it if you are one of the many that could have this problem for who knows what reason. Buy it if you want, I have to beg you to tell the devs that they NEED to fix this problem in the near future.

Verdun is Amazing Upcoming Trench Warfare game. It is game that any Gamer who enjoys Classic World War 1 game must obtain! It feels like a Classic WW1 shooter right off the bat, Reminding me of Call of Duty 1 and Medal of Honor Allied assault with the Different Squads based on real squads from the Verdun war. The game runs on the Beautiful Unity 2 engine which is used for Cross-Platform gaming and also features the ability to play on Mac and Linux! The Graphics are stellar and I extremely enjoy it since I've been waiting for a Next-Gen World War 1 game for years now. There is a basic System unlock tier for all weapons and different types of attachments. The controls simple and easy to play with, It's just like any other FPS game. The server system is very unique, Where you select a gametype on a Big Board and then select a Map to play on as opposed to a specific server, making it much easier to play with Friends. My favorite part of any FPS game is a statistics counter, Which Verdun has! It keeps track of all your kills, Melees, Deaths, Stats for specific gamemodes etc. It even has achievements and medalss within it! Verdun is absolutely a must have for the current price of $22.99. M2H and BlackMill games are hard at work developing it and making it better with each passing day!
-Please remember it is an Early Access game so there WILL be Bugs/Glitches and impending changes to the content and gameplay.

At first the game is a little hard to get used to and learning when and where to rush can be difficult at first but after only an hour or so you should start to understand. The guns are extremely deadly with a 1 hit kill policey and a 2 hit kill for small arms fire. If you have played games like Rising Storm or Red Orchestra 2 then you should feel right at home with this shooter. Within my first several hours I found my self leading a squad into battle across no mans land. As we reached the other side of the muddy field I called in a gas attack as we put on our masks. We quickly rushed the trench with our bayonets stabing those who had managed to get their masks on in time. We then defended the trench for the next several minutes while the rest of our team arived to support us.
10/10 great game for early access!

Weapons nail the war accruate. The developers are really open to the community and updates always bring me back to the game

Pros
WWI concept
Call of duty 1 and 2 feel
can use gas mask
Each class has their own weapons
