“Generously stuffed with player-made emergent moments on the battlefield and an incredible sense of place, Verdun is not just a great take on one of history’s more marginalised wars, it also happens to be a resoundingly solid shooter in its own right too.”
9.0 – Gamewatchers - John-Paul Jones

“I became immersed in its careful pacing and focus on squad movement.”
Gamespot - Cameron Woolsey

“Verdun's given me an excellent understanding of what a mess World War I was. Verdun's Frontlines mode really is sort of ingenious—and I think this is definitely one worth checking out, especially if you're already interested in the subject matter.”
PCWorld - Hayden Dingman

About This Game

Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic First World War setting. The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield experience, immersing you and your squad into intense battles of attack and defense.
The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916. The game offers 4 distinct game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch, and Squad Defense. There are also many historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, horrendous gore, and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium.

The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity. The realistic trenches are challenging to fight in and require tactical cunning to capture and defend. The Entente and Central Powers strive to gain control of frontline sectors. In one battle you’ll find yourself rushing the enemy trenches during an offensive action in order to gain ground, while in another you might be defending your recently conquered ground against a fierce enemy counter-attack.

Players can choose to be part of one of the many squad types in the game, each of which have their own distinct tactical roles. By working together with your friends, you can earn experience that improves the power and versatility of your squad. As you gain more experience fighting and get promoted in rank, you also earn Career Points which you can use to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

In the Attrition game mode, the Entente and the Central Powers are pitted against each other in a single battle. Each side has a number of tickets which represents the amount of manpower they have. When a player is killed and respawns, a ticket is deducted from the side they belonged to. When a side has no more tickets, players of that side cannot respawn - the last side standing wins!

The Rifle Deathmatch is a free-for-all game mode, where all players are pitted against each other in a thrilling contest of skill using only bolt-action rifles.

In the Squad Defense mode, the player along with three squad-mates will have to defend a position as long as they can against endless waves of AI controlled attackers.

Verdun key features include:
Realistic World War 1 gameplay: Authentic weaponry with realistic bullet physics, skill based weapon handling, gore, poisonous gas with a claustrophobic gas mask experience, horrendous gore and artillery barrages
Tactical squad-based FPS: Unique squad leveling system, distinct squad types and roles, voice chat
True trench warfare: Real-time dynamic frontline with momentum-based attack and counter-attack gameplay
Authentic World War 1 setting: Typical WW1 music and style, historical battlefields set on the Western Front
Challenging game modes: Team-based Frontline, tactical Attrition, skill-based Rifle Deathmatch and desperate survival in Squad Defense

The gameplay is as immersive and gritty as it can get with elements such as realistic gore that portrays the true horror of the 1st World War Battlefield. This feature can naturally be disable if preferred. The authentic weapons need to be handled with skill, as they each feel differently and there are no floating crosshairs to aid your aim. Also, the realistic bullet physics require you to lead your shots when firing on a moving target at long range. In the event of a gas attack, you need to put on your gas mask, which impairs your view and gives you a very claustrophobic experience. And if getting shot or gassed isn’t enough, sudden artillery barrages that are called in by NCO’s can pin you down if you’re caught in the open and might obliterate your entire squad. This unforgiving war isn’t for the faint hearted!

Team play is what lies at the heart of Verdun. When you start a game, your first choice is to fight for either the Entente or the Central Powers. You can form one of the different squad types available to that side with up to three of your friends. Each squad has a specific tactic that is based on the historical units of that time. Depending on your squad’s type, players can choose a specific role within the squad, complete with historically accurate attire, weapons and special abilities. The more Co-op experience you and your squad mates earn together, the more powerful your squad will become and the better abilities will be unlocked. This progression is also shown visually as you and your squad get more advanced uniforms. You will also earn Career Points, which can be spent to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

The true WW1 battlefield experience has been captured in a real-time dynamic frontline, set in historically accurate locations of the Western Front. These frontline maps are comprised out of multiple sectors that can be captured by either side. Staying true to the typical attrition warfare of that time, both sides attack and counter-attack each other in turn, compelling you to defend each captured sector of trenches!

The development team has done extensive field research at Verdun and has been advised by knowledgeable historians to make sure Verdun is as historically accurate as it can get. Uniforms have been recreated to the tiniest details, the weapons are modeled to exact references and the maps use realistic World War 1 props and terrain layouts. Also, everything in the game has been tailored to recreate the grim atmosphere that is so typical of WW1; Gloomy clouded skies, an immersive interface combined with realistic sounds, accurate native voices that evoke the feeling of actually being there in the trenches, mud covered - trenches whilst peering over your rifle to spot the enemy.

Very toxic playerbase for the past few months.
Game full of COD kids and has lost any semblance of the very thin WW1 flavor it once had other than skins.
Another example of what could have been a very good game that became just like every other shooter.

Game won't allow me to play because somehow I keep losing connection to the servers when I have good internet speed. I've talked to a few of my friends about this problem and most of them have the same problem. Basically I when Blackmill Games actually improve and fix the servers.

It's a very nice game, comparable in atmosphere to greats like Red Orchestra 2.

A few glitches here and there, specifically IK glitches, which will boost out of the safety of cover.

Prepared to be curb-stomped by veterans until you hit about level 25, it takes some time getting used to the controls, and to figure out the intricacies of staying low and fighting.

That being said, this game would GREATLY benefit having some kind of press-into cover system, like Red Orchestra: I find myself being killed in cover because the top of my hat was sticking over the trench , when on my screen I was safely crouched down.

You will lose your face multiple times, get trapped and killed by razor wire like a rat in a mouse trap, and become a limbless torso from mortars a multitude of times, and be mowed down by machinegun fire.

Then you'll get a new gun...

I'm an avid fan of Red Orchrastra 2 : Boogaloo edition, but this game is just awful, "but realism" No, this is just slow, its has some of the strangest control schemes I have seen, the EU servers are dead from what I have seen in my short playthrough and the reward system is daft, and shall I mention the hit registration, I have 60 ping at worst, but holy christ, the headshots with a P08 Luger, a 9mm, at point blank, he shrugs it off, and I'm sat there with a .455 in my shin. Please explain, the person I shot had stable ping of 40, I had stable ping and oddly enough, my bullet PINGS OFF OF HIM.

Another LOVELY incedent involved greanades and aqquring them, and the amount of people who had them, I excelled with my squad and yet I never managed to get a grenade let alone anything.

Honstly If you like slow games this is for you, if not, eh

In Flanders fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row...

Verdun is thankfully just a game, a game that recreates the brutal horrors of trench warfare.

There's no silly balancing, a machine gun will cut you down like a blade of grass, a bayonet will disembowel you and artillary will tear you limb from limb.

Play this game and spare some feels for those who gave so much,

This game is literally the reason I still have faith in 1) the indie gaming community 2) the historical community 3) the world at large. Thank you Verdun devs, thank you four-player based squad gameplay, and thank you Verdun community - never change! 2000+ hours since Steam Greenlight, and it's only getting better: love the free content, the gore update, the meticulously beautiful maps, the personal touch of the three core developers, the surreal weirdness, and most of all the constant attention to "realism" (whatever THAT is) that has been a priority since the beginning. It's gritty, and that's how war is too, as I understand from a distance. Keep it that way. As a PhD student in history, I could not support this game more. Thanks for making it Linux friendly - and bugs be damned. This game comes 100% recommended.

I've heard about the game for quite some time, but never tried playing it. With the Battlefield 1 hype(btw i don't like/play BF), I asked my friend to share the game with me. Turns out to be one of the most fun shooters I've ever played. Talked with friends and we all got a 4-Pack, and it was worth it.

Pros:
-Realistic WW1 setting.
-Nice trench warfare combat.
-Very good gunplay wich rewards your skill.
-Easy to get classes upgrades, you don't get locked in the early game.
-Nice graphics.
-Great maps.
-Squads rewards teamplay, especially with friends.

Cons:
-Some performance problems.
-Sometimes you get unbalanced teams, making hard to hold or atack a trench.
-Not many people play, but atleast is suficient to have maps with full teams.
-Some squad bugs.

Additional Notes:
-It doesn't have a ingame tutorial, but it doesn't make the game bad, if you have played a lot of FPS or games like Red Orchestra 2, you won't have problems learning the game. I found it way easier than RO2.
-If you need help about the game, go to Options->Game Help, there is tons of useful info to help you get into the game.
-It's multiplayer only.

Overall I'm having a great time playing the game, if you have a interest in WW1 setting or you want a good shooter that doesn't hold your hand too much, I recommend it in a heartbeat, be it on sale or even full price.

The main problem is that it still feels like an early access title, laggy connections, frequent bugs in both gameplay and menu UI and this is partenered with gameplay issues such as map boundaries limiting tactical options and constant spawn killing.

Ok so my review of verdun is, its still early access. It doesent say it is, but it is.

Frequent stuttering, and FPS drops, as well as many graphical glitches, soilders holding invisible guns, flickering scopes. When i asked someone who was a fan of the game, they replied "Every game has these issues." Or "It's just a server issue."

The gameplay could be fun, if they made the bolt action rifles inacurate at close range. they tryed with a Rising Storm styled Hold Shift to steady. But using it is pointless now. Melee weapons are pointless, In a ww1 game... Of course i think its because you dont get anything special for melee kills, for instance like Battlefield's DogTags. And they have classes in the Trench Raiders that are pretty much pointless. Because they use those melee weapons.

The biggest issue i have is that they are moving to consoles. They arent fixing this version of the game. And apparantly its out of early access somehow.

There are two things i like in this game and that is the music, each squad gets its own musical number at the beginning of each round. And i like that this is the compettetion for battlefield one which is looking more for Fun then historical accuracy. Remember this was my opinion, nothing but my opinion, and i dont care if you use your opinion.

EDIT: I removed the comments made by devolpers that i had used, because this was before the studio change. So rest easy.

Also i see that sherafluff labled me as a "hatr" Of course the reason why im "hatr-ing" on the game is because i want it to be a good game. I'd rather more constructive criticism such as the "information" comment that i had gotten before.

A real shame. The gameplay is excellent when it works and the atmosphere is brilliant. However the game is terribly optimised and I suffered frequent crashes, my longest stint of uninterrupted gameplay coming in at 23 minutes. After contacting the support team multiple times without answer I gave up and had steam refund me. Terribly disappointed.

Not really my cup of tea, because it's obvious you'll really need to play with friends in order to really get good at this game.
Nice looking, pretty realistic.
Overall, it's a fun game, but I don't have a lot of time to invest into it, nor do I have a team going in with me.
