What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“M2H and BlackMill Games took the opportunity to work with you on polishing the game Verdun. By entering Steam Early Access in September 2013 we managed to get the attention needed to vastly improve the gameplay and user experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Verdun will leave Early Access February 2015.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We are set to take Verdun to the next level in terms of visuals, but also mature its gameplay to become a more tactical game in which our unique squad co-op gameplay flourishes. In addition there will be more maps and more squad types available at launch.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Verdun is very stable in its current form with all of the gameplay fully operational. We're focussing on polishing the entire experience some more and squash the last bugs. Mainly the immersion will be massively improved in the months to come.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Game will remain at the same price point.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Since the alpha in April of 2013 we have continuously involved the community. It has helped shaping the tactical frontline gameplay that mimics the trench warfare. We have taken many community features and implemented them into the game.”

V198: Level System overhaul & weapon self-shadowing

Listen up Verdun players!

Today we update the game with an overhaul in the leveling system. We have simplified our complex leveling system with the introduction of Career Points.

The career point system replaces the role levels and weapon levels. Verdun now only has a personal Career Level, and co-op XP with is saved between two friends to make up a squad level. You will receive 10 career points by default, then for each level you get 2 career points. Currently there are 77 points to be earned. note: existing players will automatically receive the points they should have earned, leaving all unlocks in-tact. If you have unlocked more than you could have for the career level you are at, you are automatically promoted so you will not lose any unlocks / specializations.

Career points can be used for:

role specialization
Unlock a role specialization which are the weapon sets in a squad role, players start out with one basic kit but can chose to spend an unlock point to unlock another tier (there are 3 in total). As experienced player know these tiers are not better than eachother, but can be used within different contexts to allow players to change their playstyle within the role they have a squad member.

Squad setup screen in game, the system will indicate if you have any available unlock points, role levels have been removed

RDM weapons and attachments
Unlock weapons and attachments in the rifle deathmatch game mode. Once weapons have been unlocked (for 1 career point), you can choose to unlock each of the available attachments for 1 point each, in consecutive order.

The new more compact Rifle Deathmatch UI

V198 has more features. such as a weapon self-shadowing. Taking full advantage of the new unity 5 engine, after the weapon texture upgrade of V196 we updated the way in which weapons react to lighting and shadows. Also the sleeves have been upgraded with physically based materials and are more detailed.

Weapon self-shadowing and casting shadows on the sleeves, which also have been updated

Work on the game continues in steady progress, we are working to convert the entire engine to physically based materials, polish mechanics such as melee and MG deployment, tweak network performance and framerate. Expect more fixes in the coming weeks!

V196: Medals, Stats, Graphics, Knives and more!

A big update was just released today with some big features. If you want more information about those features please keep reading!

Medals, Afteraction and Account stats
We extended our after action screen with some new match stats and medals. You can earn medals in the match by doing specific actions. Which medals can be earned and how much you have earned can be found in your account screen.

Medals can be earned in three categories: Elite, Veteran and Common. The higher the rank, the smaller are the odds of receiving and thus earning you more points. These medals not only show of your skills but also give you extra XP so make sure you try to collect as much as possible.

Along with the medals we finished the account screen. In the account screen you can find exstensive information on the progress of your gave and the statistics of your performance. Check it out!

Graphics Boost

Volcol has already been helping us with characters but we can now inform you that he is full on board with the Verdun team to also help boost all off the other graphics. We is currently working on improving the weapons to make them stand out more in the new PBR rendering. The weapons have gotten a first pass and I am sure you will agree they look a lot better. Also the all of the characters have gotten an extra polish.

As you have also may have noticed we switched colorspace from gamma to linear. While this is kind of technical what this basically means is that the colors of the game will look much better and less washed out which was a problem we had on the older versions. A long with this we also added a sharpen filter over the game which does what it says and make the game look more crisp. The graphics overhaul is still a work in progress but the results are already very promising!

An extra post effect has also been added namely Depth of FIeld blur on Weapon sights. Now when sighting your rear sight will blur allowing you to focus on the front sight.

Specializations overhaul
Since most loadouts did not differ much we switched from having 4 loadouts to 3. Also with this we removed captured weapons. For the recon squads we sharpened the knives and game them to the apprioriate classes.

Beginning of melee fixes
We have begun improving melee and there are already some improvement but it still a work in progress but you may find it already works better. Features that will be added later is suppresion from melee and other tweaks to make it more useful in your close quarters combar.

Flinching
We added flinching for whenever you get shot. Also your character now flinches when jumping so this should prevent bunny hopping. This is still not perfect so your feedback is welcome.

Networking
We made some improvements to the networking which should reduce if not fully solve the teleporting of people in the distance. A long with that we also highered the ping kick as the disadvantage is with the new update with the high pingers and not with the lower ones.

These were some of the highlights of this patch. And we hope you enjoy them.

See you in the trenches!

About This Game

Verdun is a squad-based multiplayer FPS set in First World War (WW1) . The game is inspired by the infamous battle of Verdun in 1916.

The game includes historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, historical maps based on sectors of the Western Front and authentic uniforms and equipment. The game immerses you into one of the bloodiest conflicts fought in Europe.

The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield for tactical squad play in the gritty Frontlines game mode, and raw pure gameplay in the rifle Deathmatch.

The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity, where you are levelling different types of squads, each with your own tactics and roles. The realistic trenches are an extra challenge in the fight, where teamwork and tactical cunning are essential for success. Drive your enemies from their trenches and dominate the Western Front!

Verdun key features include:
Unique World War 1 gameplay: Authentic weaponry, characters levelling and realistic historical battlefields set in France and Belgium
Tactical squad-based FPS: Squad assembling and levelling
True trench warfare: Real-time dynamic frontline; momentum-based attack and counter-attack gameplay
WW1 atmosphere: Typical WW1 music, art, units, grim battlefields and an immersive user interface
Challenging game modes: Dynamic Frontline and rifle Deathmatch
Chemical weaponry: Tactical gas deployment and immersive gas mask experience

The team has done extensive research in the field at Verdun and has been advised by knowledgeable historians to make sure Verdun is historically accurate. Uniforms have been recreated to the tiniest details, weapons modeled to exact references and maps created from real-life elements.

Teamplay is what lies at the heart of Verdun. You fight for either the Entente or the Central Powers. Within each side up to 4 players can form 1 of the different squad types available to that side. These squads each have a specific tactic, and are based on real historical units of that time. Depending on your squad’s type, players can choose a specific role within the squad, complete with the historical attire, weapons and abilities. The more experience (XP) you and your squad mates earn together, the more powerful your squad will become..

A true WW1 experience has been captured by the historically accurate battlefields, divided into multiple sectors that can be captured by either side. The real-time dynamic frontline shows every captured or lost meter by your side. Staying true to the warfare of that time, both sides attack and counter-attack each other in turn, where you will be forced to defend each captured each sector of trenches.

This game is just like real WWI and there are a series of possibilities that could happen;
-Back and Forth gonig across no man's land acomplishing nothing for hours on end = dead
-Going into no man's land = dead
-Peaking your pointy cap out of the trench = dead
-Hiding in the trench and then getting gassed mashing all the buttons to find out how to put a gas mask on = dead
-Staying in the back of the trench then getting rushed by 10 crazy Brits screaming FOR THE QUEEN = dead
-Slapping a brit spamming FOR THE QUEEN then getting shot by his 20 strong well organized team = priceless (and dead)

10/10 would be dead again

Excellent game about almost forgotten era in gaming. Been playing it about a year (i think) and while its still in early access, it feels and plays out as real and finished game- did so when i bought it way back. I honhestly hesitated to buy it when it was on sale, because while as history geek i always wanted ww1 game, i never tought it actually had potential to be fun. Well, i was wrong about latter part- this game is fun as hell!
Graphics are great- maybe not best, but atmosphere they create is fantastic.
Sound department is also great, as is weapons, squads (basically factions- currently it has 7 squad types (3 for central powers (i.e germans), 4 for entente (2 french, 1 canadian and 1 british) split in 2 factions (entente and central powers). Each squad type is split into 4 unique classes, so you got plenty to discover

However, if you expect fast-paced combat like call of duty is, you have to look elsewhere, as this game plays out bit more like Red Orchestra, though bit more arcade-y. You need teamwork to win- killing every enemy doesnt bring you victory or even most points. You have to defend when, well, you defend and attack when you (isnt it obvious) attack. Always try to stay in target trench though

There are still some faults however, such as some classes start with only melee weapon (and melee weapons are near useless in Verdun game), you can very easily get killed when completely in cover (according to devs, it will be fixed next update).

What makes this game even better, however, is multiple experience types- each class has its own xp meter, 4 levels, each with unique weapon selection. Also you have personal xp meter, which ups your rank and also squad xp (to encourage you to play with friends), which gives you later war uniforms and better artillery.

Basically there is so much positive about this game that few minor bad things are basically irrelevant. I could go on and on about this game, but i stop here.
buy it. you wont regret it.

I love this game,

It's got a nice atmosphere, something that many games lack. It has good sound effects, the game runs perfect on my potato. (Laptop), no lag on low. Movement mechanics are good.

What does it lack exactly?

Nothing, It has Australian servers, you just need to click Server Location and pick AU, which I missed, so therefore my review has now gone from negative to Positive.

Great game!

I watched a WW1 Documentary once, and in it, I remember a veteran of the war (it was an old documentary) saying how no one was scared when going "over the top". I couldn't imagine how anyone could resist being scared when you're RUNNING INTO RIFLE FIRE. But then I got this game. And even though my life isn't on the line when going over the top, I can still feel that adrenaline rush the veteran described. But enough about that. Here are some pros/cons

PROS
+ Historically accurate weapons
+ Chance to mutter rascist terms about the French, Brit, Canadians, Germans, Americans, etc. while killing them.
+ Great gas mechanics
+ Real-life gun events (e.g. rifle jamming)
+ Well-done maps
+ Diverse classes and specializations
+ Getting revealed via pointy hat

CONS
- Laggy
- Odd shooting mechanics

Overall: 8.2/10 game, easily. I would recommend buying it, especially if you're a World War buff.

Verdun is one of the best games iv' played. im obsessed with WWI/II! everything about the great wars interests me, The Guns, the Armour, the Places, the armys, the Individual peoples stroys! its all realy special. and when i saw this game Ages ago, i shouved it on my Wishlist streight away! But it was only Up untill recently that i was Killing my self for not buying it! because My mate did it for me!
Special thanks to RG | ConolaCoil (name may change), Your a real Goons mate! Anyway, the game. Verdun is the single most Acurate WWI FPS iv ever seen. Its actualy Quite scary, how close it gets to the real Horrors that they had to face for us, them soldiers XD.
One can easely get Completely and Fully imersed in this game. Things like Being able to say things in game like little comands & Misc' frazes like a battle Cry (wich depending on what side your on will determin what could be said) & Laughing, or just saying "good Shot, Mate!" or "I cant Believe ya Hit that!" in a young British dudes exited Voice. the game just makes you smile at those points
but when your teammate Blows that Defening Wistle to sound the charge, You pray and Run like they taught you to in boot camp, strieght at the enimy with tiers of fury in your eyes! Guns blazing, its gonna ither be You or them.

Once you get the game, Even the Main menu is Awsomely cute and Acuarate. Your Menu sits floating with a Background of the Trenches were you have been spending the Nights of your Service. Music from the radio floats from the right, and the crackling fire and murmering sets the mood. its realy interactive and special, like when you go to the Options, it takes you to a small Dugout roomwere what seems like Your Personal items are. Its realy cool!
to get straight into the action, dead in the middle of the top bar is "find battle". Smash that one with your Mouse, and you can pick out of Death match, just Unrealistic cod like DM, and Front line, Awsome staged battles that Use Squads and souch. you Press front line and it will bring you to a map layed out on the table in your Home trench. Find battles in one of there famous locations like Flanders. Once you've done that, You have to join A squad. Each squad has its Own name, made by people who have created them. You join one, and Play a roll for that squad in a battle. You join the battle, and Diferant individual squads are on ither team. your orders dont get mixed up with theres, however the Over all goal effects all in the team (Take Ground and Prosper!). You can even go through Tiers of Classes, giving you something to play for in your time in service. each Class has 3 tiers and once unlocked, the tiers loadout is avalable 24/7. the tiers will introduce items relevent to the class, aka a grenedier will be upgraded with a Pistol of some sort and more Grenades, to get closer faster and LOB em in! a dangerous job. and rifleman can upgrade with Bayonet's and scopes, making Trench warefare as scary as Peeking your head over the trench lines.
Everything about this game i love! even the guns have souch attention to detail, and realism is beond messure here. you dont always ♥♥♥♥ the Bolt on your rifle ither, like Automaticly in cod. you dont auto reload, everythings up to the player, like how it was in WWI. the Guns themselfs are Works of Art, looking Beautifuly realistic and sounding like it too. and its the same with the landscapes! The Trenches themselfs have steps were peopel would peak over and fire, little alcoves were people would take cover, barbed wire everywere inwich you can get stuck, and with A lot of movement tear yourself open and DIe! its all wonderfull!
I happened to be more patiant when it comes to games for some reson, but i would think that Those who are used to cod may not Like this as much mainly because if you try some stuff that you can do in cod in this, well it normaly doesnt work and will ruin the game for you.
so basicaly, if you want an awsome game to do with WWI thats attention to detail is Beond measure, Grab this. if your not, grab cod 1.
