Reviews

“Generously stuffed with player-made emergent moments on the battlefield and an incredible sense of place, Verdun is not just a great take on one of history’s more marginalised wars, it also happens to be a resoundingly solid shooter in its own right too.”
9.0 – Gamewatchers - John-Paul Jones

“I became immersed in its careful pacing and focus on squad movement.”
Gamespot - Cameron Woolsey

“Verdun's given me an excellent understanding of what a mess World War I was. Verdun's Frontlines mode really is sort of ingenious—and I think this is definitely one worth checking out, especially if you're already interested in the subject matter.”
PCWorld - Hayden Dingman

About This Game

Verdun is the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic First World War setting. The merciless trench warfare offers a unique battlefield experience, immersing you and your squad into intense battles of attack and defense.
The game takes place on the western front between 1914 and 1918, in one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. The developers were inspired by the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916. The game offers 4 distinct game-modes: Frontlines, Attrition, Rifle Deathmatch, and Squad Defense. There are also many historically accurate features such as realistic WW1 weaponry, authentic uniforms, horrendous gore, and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium.

The Frontlines game mode is unique in its tactical complexity. The realistic trenches are challenging to fight in and require tactical cunning to capture and defend. The Entente and Central Powers strive to gain control of frontline sectors. In one battle you’ll find yourself rushing the enemy trenches during an offensive action in order to gain ground, while in another you might be defending your recently conquered ground against a fierce enemy counter-attack.

Players can choose to be part of one of the many squad types in the game, each of which have their own distinct tactical roles. By working together with your friends, you can earn experience that improves the power and versatility of your squad. As you gain more experience fighting and get promoted in rank, you also earn Career Points which you can use to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

In the Attrition game mode, the Entente and the Central Powers are pitted against each other in a single battle. Each side has a number of tickets which represents the amount of manpower they have. When a player is killed and respawns, a ticket is deducted from the side they belonged to. When a side has no more tickets, players of that side cannot respawn - the last side standing wins!

The Rifle Deathmatch is a free-for-all game mode, where all players are pitted against each other in a thrilling contest of skill using only bolt-action rifles.

In the Squad Defense mode, the player along with three squad-mates will have to defend a position as long as they can against endless waves of AI controlled attackers.

Verdun key features include:
Realistic World War 1 gameplay: Authentic weaponry with realistic bullet physics, skill based weapon handling, gore, poisonous gas with a claustrophobic gas mask experience, horrendous gore and artillery barrages
Tactical squad-based FPS: Unique squad leveling system, distinct squad types and roles, voice chat
True trench warfare: Real-time dynamic frontline with momentum-based attack and counter-attack gameplay
Authentic World War 1 setting: Typical WW1 music and style, historical battlefields set on the Western Front
Challenging game modes: Team-based Frontline, tactical Attrition, skill-based Rifle Deathmatch and desperate survival in Squad Defense

The gameplay is as immersive and gritty as it can get with elements such as realistic gore that portrays the true horror of the 1st World War Battlefield. This feature can naturally be disable if preferred. The authentic weapons need to be handled with skill, as they each feel differently and there are no floating crosshairs to aid your aim. Also, the realistic bullet physics require you to lead your shots when firing on a moving target at long range. In the event of a gas attack, you need to put on your gas mask, which impairs your view and gives you a very claustrophobic experience. And if getting shot or gassed isn’t enough, sudden artillery barrages that are called in by NCO’s can pin you down if you’re caught in the open and might obliterate your entire squad. This unforgiving war isn’t for the faint hearted!

Team play is what lies at the heart of Verdun. When you start a game, your first choice is to fight for either the Entente or the Central Powers. You can form one of the different squad types available to that side with up to three of your friends. Each squad has a specific tactic that is based on the historical units of that time. Depending on your squad’s type, players can choose a specific role within the squad, complete with historically accurate attire, weapons and special abilities. The more Co-op experience you and your squad mates earn together, the more powerful your squad will become and the better abilities will be unlocked. This progression is also shown visually as you and your squad get more advanced uniforms. You will also earn Career Points, which can be spent to unlock specializations, weapons and equipment.

The true WW1 battlefield experience has been captured in a real-time dynamic frontline, set in historically accurate locations of the Western Front. These frontline maps are comprised out of multiple sectors that can be captured by either side. Staying true to the typical attrition warfare of that time, both sides attack and counter-attack each other in turn, compelling you to defend each captured sector of trenches!

The development team has done extensive field research at Verdun and has been advised by knowledgeable historians to make sure Verdun is as historically accurate as it can get. Uniforms have been recreated to the tiniest details, the weapons are modeled to exact references and the maps use realistic World War 1 props and terrain layouts. Also, everything in the game has been tailored to recreate the grim atmosphere that is so typical of WW1; Gloomy clouded skies, an immersive interface combined with realistic sounds, accurate native voices that evoke the feeling of actually being there in the trenches, mud covered - trenches whilst peering over your rifle to spot the enemy.

I haven't played much yet, but I know for a fact that Verdun is one of the best military war"simulators" out there. It focuses heavily on trench combat from WWI and I absolutely am addicted to it. You will be in a squad that has 4 players and you must "protect" your commander or atleast keep advancing on the enemy.
Stunning game, I love the variety of weapons and lore behind them.

Truly, a marvelous game and hopefully a sequel or maybe even a new series like this one?

>Playing as sqaud's gunner
>Taking cover in an old artillery crater
>Squad NCO takes cover with me
>NCO tells me to provide covering fire, as he charges closer to the enemy's trench
>Tell NCO that I can provide said fire, and that I'll start setting up my MG
>Sudden yelling from the area around me
>Realizes that teammates are charging into the enemy's trench
>Takes out sidearm, and charges out of the crater with NCO
>Takes cover in an area right outside of the enemy's trench
>NCO doesn't take cover, and keeps charging with other teamates
>Gunshots and screams, meaning my entire team's been gunned down by the enemy team
>I quickly try to sneak to the side of the trench, opposite of the side I'm at now
>I look back to the other side, and see my team taking cover from fire coming from the enemy's trench
>I ignore it, and continiue my trek to the other side of the trench
>Hearing war cries from my team and the enemy, I look back one more time
>I see that some of the team is following me the the other side, while most of it is still willfully charging the enemy through heavy fire
>Now at the other side, I have about five teammates, including my squad with me
>I tell our squad's grenadier, and any other teamates who have grenades to throw them into the trench
>Tens of small explosions happen all at once, killing all of the enemies that were at our side of the trench
>After all the grenades are done exploding, our little infiltration force charges the trench
>Rifleman in our little force charge through the trench, while others take defensive positions at entrances the the enemy could utilize
>Once the trench is cleared, our team then captures it, defends it, then having to complete the process again.
9/10 Would infiltrate enemy trench again.

Generic Source/Unreal shooter. Not the worst thing, but not the best offering out there either. At this stage it'd be best to wait for B1.

I've heard about the game for quite some time, but never tried playing it. With the Battlefield 1 hype(btw i don't like/play BF), I asked my friend to share the game with me. Turns out to be one of the most fun shooters I've ever played. Talked with friends and we all got a 4-Pack, and it was worth it.

Pros:
-Realistic WW1 setting.
-Nice trench warfare combat.
-Very good gunplay wich rewards your skill.
-Easy to get classes upgrades, you don't get locked in the early game.
-Nice graphics.
-Great maps.
-Squads rewards teamplay, especially with friends.

Cons:
-Some performance problems.
-Sometimes you get unbalanced teams, making hard to hold or atack a trench.
-Not many people play, but atleast is suficient to have maps with full teams.
-Some squad bugs.

Additional Notes:
-It doesn't have a tutorial, but it doesn't make the game bad, if you have played a lot of FPS or games like Red Orchestra 2, you won't have problems learning the game. I found it way easier than RO2.
-It's multiplayer only.

Overall I'm having a great time playing the game, if you have a interest in WW1 setting or you want a good shooter that doesn't hold your hand too much, I recommend it in a heartbeat, be it on sale or even full price.

> Launch game
> Join French squad already in a game
> Meet this one guy, we'll call him Frenchybro
> Me and Frenchybro chill in our trench, killing men together
> We build a pretty cool relationship
> We keep switching firing positions (never fire in the same place twice)
> Shells and bullets flying over, hear some people screaming for their mothers
> We get the orders to go over the top and charge the enemy trench
> Me and Frenchybro hang along the edge of the battlefield while the enemy fire is focused on other people
> Start taking fire and dip into a crater
> We land on a dead horse, half buried, along with a fallen German, rifle and ammo clips lying around, along with a soup cup
> Me and Frenchybro half a few rounds land near us, we wait a little longer to peek over
> Planes and shells flying over, so many shells it's a wonder the planes weren't hit
> Bullets stop landing near us
> Hear dirt kick up next to us in the crater
> I turn to Frenchybro, and a grenade suddenly goes off right under his feet
> Leg instantly gone, he's on the ground squirming, and screaming
> I crouch down next to him, "It's okay, I'm gonna get you out of here."
> He stops squirming, Frenchybro now lies dead next to me
> Lay down with him for however long
> Peek over the edge of the crater and see Americans, other French, and some British charging towards the trench
> I leave Frenchybro in that crater, and charge into the enemy trench
> Kill a few last men for Frenchybro
> Torn apart by a machinegun and an NCO's Luger
> Charge fails
> Everyone dead for nothing, no land was gained
> Frenchybro died for nothing
War ♥♥♥♥ing sucks.

Verdun has excellet gameplay and graphics and all that, but what I don't see people talking about a lot is how Verdun goes beyond the screen. The gore, for example, is not really meant to awe at. When you shoot someone and blow their arm off, or you shoot someone in the gut and have to listen to their screams for a minute or so, you actually kinda start to feel responsible. Seeing all the explosions, experiencing suppression, seeing the gore, and experiencing the dark and depressing atmosphere can really sort of open your eyes to what the war was. It's not like killing evil nazis or crazy zombies. It makes you realize that you're killing a living, breathing human being, and that's something that no game has ever made me feel. It can make you realize that people were actually doing and seeing all the same stuff in real life. Verdun is the most respectful and accurate portrayal of warfare that I've ever experienced.

You stand in a hole, created from what you can only guess is a bomb. next to you is a dead soldier, his body half buried in the mud. He is in such a bad state that you cant even tell from what army he is from. Suddenly you hear that you need to push up and attack the enemies trenches. Being a soldier you emerge and blindly follow the orders given by your squad commander who is 50 meters back safe and sound with his binoculars, calling in mortar fire and hardly in any danger at all.
After setting foot in the mud above the hole you get a second to look around. Dead comrades everywere, half of them are still alive screaming for their moms and others just screaming from the pure terror of looking at what used to be their leg. I doesnt take long for you to realize that you are al that is left from your wave. YOU somehow maneged to survive. you look behind yourself and see the faces of the new infantry wave starting to take their steps out of the trenches. You feel happy for a moment thinking "yes! reinforcments! now i might be able to get som help and take this trench". The happiness is soon shatterd as you notice heavy enemy gunfire from a machine gun and seeing the new wave of reinforcments being slaughterd and torn to shreds from the hail of bullets. After realizing help isnt comming you think "f*** it". And with your trusty rifle and bayonnete you charge the enemy trenche and somehow manege to jump down and enter it. Look to the right and then left. The right is clear but there is a german on the left and before you know it you pull the trigger. And the german fall to the ground, screaming, crying out. And at that moment you realize that you are no better than the people that are mowing down your friends. You pass the young german who has now gone silent but is still moving around in pure agony. Another one! Another german is less than five meters away! But it is to late. He is already aiming at you. And suddenly you start to fall. While you are falling you see anger in the soldiers eyes. Perhaps it was his friend you just killed. But it matters not, for you are starting to see red and darkness. You take your final breath and a small one at that. And then you die.

In short this game is kinda cool

What is this!? This isn't ww1! Where are all the people sprinting about with automatic weapons and the hyper-speed tanks, and why are there so many trenches!? Also the need for actual tactics makes this far to boring! 0/10 would rather play Battlefield 1...
