What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on http://twitch.tv/Vlambeer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Update #61 - Taking out the Trash - Weekend of January 28th

Every now and then we really need to sit down and take a look at the mess we've made with previous updates. That's why this week was spent fixing tiny bugs, annoyances, doing some much-needed balancing and adding loads of tiny improvements! Most of these probably cause new problems to pop up, and will break all kinds of unrelated things! These are truely exciting times.

[list[b]Features

  • We started on reworking Lil Hunter. Now less of a "kill instantly or get killed instantly affair", and more of a challenge.
  • Update to the character select portraits. That art was old!
  • A new Throne Butt for Chicken, allowing her to run at normal speed when using slow motion instead of having normal rate of fire.
  • A rare, new weapon that only spawns under certain conditions. Sorry.
  • Enemies now have 10% more HP per loop.
  • New Crown Vault tiles and torches. More work on these soon!

    Balancing
  • Cursed chests no longer drop the most basic of weapons.
  • Changed Horror's Ultra B to shoot slightly less projectiles, but also work from canisters.
  • More spread for the Lightning Shotgun.
  • Rabbit Paw got a slight nerf, mainly for weapon spawns.
  • Energy Hammer has a tiny bit higher rate of fire now.
  • Energy Sword has a bit lower rate of fire now.
  • Hammerhead requires less pushing.
  • Lucky Shot has been improved and gives bigger chunks of ammo.
  • Fire Traps have a bit longer pauses in between flames.
  • [CLASSIFIED] boxes can now drop [CLASSIFIED] when destroyed! Radical!
  • Smaller hitbox for the Proto Statues (and also for the Fish skull in Desert).

    Fixes
  • Fixed the omnipresent quick restart crash.
  • Throne can no longer be disappeared with Sharp Teeth.
  • Fixed a super cool save editing exploit.
  • Melting can no longer blow up invisible corpses, like cars had.
  • Crystal enemies no longer flip horizontally when aiming at you.
  • Proto Statues no longer get trampled.
  • Fixed some weapons related to Eyes A Ultra.
  • No more normal big weapon chests when taking a tour of the mansion.

    Misc
  • Added ZQSD support.
  • Changed the tip for Strong Spirit into something way better.
  • IDPD Grenades should now make a short warning sound right before exploding.
  • Impact effects for Slugs and Heavy Slugs!
  • New sprite for the Ultra Bolts.
  • New sprites for the Crystal Spiders.
  • Golden Bazooka no fires a sparkling Golden Rocket!

That's all folks! Have fun and let us know how you feel!

Early Access Review
Nuclear Throne is the best of Borderlands and The Binding of Issac boiled down to an art in the form of a turbocharged SNES game that feels so good to play it has to be illegal in some states. You can choose to play as a hard boiled mutant fish police officer, living crystal with the ability to reflect bullets on cue, a multi-eyed alien with no mouth with the power of telekinesis, a living corpse with the ability to detonate the dead, a living plant that can speed around and throw vines to ensnare enemies and expand your visibility to its location on cue, an alien “gun god” who can fire guns up to four times in one click on cue, a lone surviving human scientist who became a ball of muscle through insane steroid injection able to use two guns AT THE SAME TIME, a robot able to eat guns for health and ammo, a chicken able to die and come back to life from a headless state with just one small med kit, a rebel bandit able to summon more rebels at the cost of health to build a temporary army, living plutonium able to fire beams of energy to dissolve incoming enemy fire on cue, and a rogue cop (from an interdimensional police department) on the run with explosive armor that causes no damage to them and ENERGIZED MORTAR FIRE on cue. If those character summaries don't show you what we're dealing with, let me tell you this:

NONSTOP EDGE OF SEAT ACTION.

You lower your guard and go into a room, you are more than likely dead in seconds unless you are some bullet dodging master. What else?

VOLUNTARY MUTATIONS.

You are going to want to mutate your body, it is the equivalent of leveling up in this game and gives you unique abilities from a random assortment of four option given every time you level up, some exclusive to certain characters for their specific abilities. What else?

UNENDING SATISFACTION.

You are going to love everything. This game has no saves and you won't care, it is jump in, die, jump in material that's so fast and frantic you will embrace it all from moments of epic bullet dodging from every angle, to beefy impact screen shake (with the option to change the power of it in the options), to powerful weaponry that can edge on insanity, to that final boss fight that took you 50-100 hours of training to destroy and made you double fist pump and roar out like a barbarian warlord.

The game is far from/close to being released as the full game, but any time to come in and play this is the best time as long as you can accept and anticipate changes.

Why are you reading this review? You could have already bought this game and have been playing it.

Nuclear Throne is just by far one of the best games I've played in a long time. It's replayable as heck, rage inducing(while still getting me to come back for more), and the community is one of the best I've found myself in in a while.

If you haven't caught on yet, I'm not really good at describing why I like things; but Nuclear Throne and why I like it is just hard to describe in particular. The game as a whole just has a satisfying feel that I haven't gotten anywhere else in a long time.

The Devs are great guys; I've met them at PAX, and chatted for a while about the game and such. It was a good experience.

If nothing else I'm going to say is going to convince you to buy it, just look at my hours played. That doesn't even include like, the other 300 hours I've played offline at places like the library.

I was disappointed to find out this game is in fact NOT about a radioactive toilet, but it ended up being a solid, and enjoyable action-roguelike, so I recommend it anyway.

I don't usually support Early Access games, but HOLY ♥♥♥♥, IS NUCLEAR THRONE WORTH IT!? YOU ♥♥♥♥ING BET IT.

Nuclear Throne it's the perfect blend between a Shoot 'em Up Bullet Hell, a Roguelike Top Down Shooter with some spice of RPG and an amazing soundtrack that will follow along with you and your journey of becoming the most badass ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the block.

The game it self it's fast paced, but easy AND FUN to master, you have plenty of characters (mutants) with their own skills, from a blindfolded chiken with slowmo and an anabolics-abuser macho that can dual wield any two weapons to a piranha plant that can snare enemies. You can level up by getting Radiation that is dropped from enemies and sometimes found in canisters around the levels, everytime you level up, you will be able to choose a power up when you finish a level. You start with a single weapon but can have 2 at any given time from over the 100 that the game has, they are found in the levels and can be switched anytime, find your favourite combinations and kill everytihng. Have fun.

Update #60 Edit: Now it actually has over 100 guns.

This is one of the few good early access games , you can believe that : ).

Nuclear throne is a Roguelike shooter that you might enjoy if you like binding of isaac.

Note that nuclear throne is more pixelated , and the game is MUCH faster and crazier and extremely hard...
I really like this game , clocked 8 hours so far and MAN I am having so much fun with this game.

but to bring to a serious points.

Don't buy this game if you want a fully finished game with customize-able resolution and scaling and what not, Because this game does not have all that (yet ) , they are all there in options but they are not done yet, and they are working on the game frequently adding new stuff every now and then so dont threat on that : ).

You choose between 12 character, each with its own special passive and active ability and they are all fun to use, and as you level up you choose mutations which are upgrades ( Perks ), such as hp up , speed up and much more ( And they are adding more with updates), but the game is a rogue-like so yeah once you die you start over.
And the jolly fun of a (Daily Challenge) to see how much is your rank every day

Enemies are pretty tough and moves good so the ai is not bad.
A big selection of weapons , Swords, Guns, Rifles, Shotguns, and crazier things : ).
Trying to reach the nuclear throne ( I haven't reached it yet its really difficult ).
Level design is quite good , gives you the chance to attack and hide and strategies your movements.
The soundtrack is crazy, it fits this game's style, and the special effects are also pretty sweet.

I don't think its fair to anyone to write my Pros and Cons for this game yet , because honestly the only Cons I have are the ones in the game's menu options but they are working on it so it wouldn't be fair to the devs , and wouldn't be fair to a possible buyer to scare him off with it without explaining how it really is.
The game runs on a capped 30Fps, doesn't feel (Stuttery) at all , and i am not sure if they are planning to make it a 60fps later on but it doesn't matter to me anyway, the screen is not fitting on my 1366x768 resolution but LIKE I SAID they are still working on different resolution options also with scaling, so i dont worry about it.

I like what I'm seeing so far, good game , good updates, high replay value, so yes i am sure this is a good early access game for you if you'd like to enjoy this wonderful piece and support the devs on their journey with it.

TL:DR.
This is one of the good Early Access games out there , if you enjoy games such as binding of isaac or crimisonland you might wanna get it , it is similar and focusing much more on speed and action, the game is good and I recommend it to everyone who loves a good rogue-like shooter and doesn't mind the early access tag

Have you ever wanted to play as the illuminaughty dorito spamming airhorns while shooting through hordes of bandits, a-hole scorpions, rats, sniper robots, crows with smgs, a giant robotic cerberus, cyborg wolves, necromancers, beings made of pure solidified radiation, interdimensional police, the teenage mutant ninja turtles, then overthrow a giant throne that kills all your friends before attaning it's final form, proceed to loop and do everything for an eternal cycle until you get shot too much and decide to warp back to your space mansion? then you'll love this game, even in it's unfinished form. tough but exciting, this game is truly a bullet hell masterpiece.

boring version of what I said:

Basically you play as an outlaw in a post-apocolyptic world looking for the Nuclear Throne, an almighty source of radioactive power. the journey is not safe however, and is frought with much danger, which is why you collect "rads" to level up and gain amazing mutations to make the quest an accomplishable task.

The game plays as a top-down rogue-like action game, and is basically what happens when you mix binding of isaac and borderlands together, slap on some retro-ish graphics, then cover it in bullet hell smegma. I thoroughly enjoy this game and hope you do too. ( hopefully featuring Dante from Devil May Cry & Knuckles).

This is one of the best shooters I've played.
Even though its really not too forgiving, (You start from the begining every death) I still have fun when I come back to it.
The controlls are perfect for this type of shooter.
Later levels get intense and are insanely crazy as you try to survive in all of this fun to look at places.
Its a tad bit like a Namco arcade game called Dragon Spirit.
There are lots of characters to choose from, and Im sure you'll find one that you'll stick with 90% of the time.
I was gifted this game by one of my friends, and Im very greatful for it.

Nuclear Throne is an art.
It shows the importance of self-discovery and ability.
It tells us to continue to try try again, to prove our own worth to reach our end goal.
It shows to us that no person is without their own specialty, and with that you must rely on that key specialty on your survival...

...That is until online co-op hits, and everyone goes with guns blazing.

First off, I have to say that these developers, are probably one of the most generous indie-developers out there.
Giving free copies of the game to those who purchased it beforehand. And they did it TWICE!
Not only is that incredible. But it was an extremely effective marketing strategy, as I was a lucky recipiant of this game from a friend.

Now, in this current time. This game is still in development. But the community full of veterans, and newcomers alike all share a common interest.

"We all wanna' run with the godz of the gunz! Pop Pop! Using Guns with 6 Senses."

Features-
12 Unique Characters with Unique abilities
Fast Paced Gameplay
Great replayability
Crisp Pixel Graphics
Satisfying Audio
Clean User Interface
Secrets already tucked into the game
A Gun God

Possible Improvements-
Tweak the Drop Rate of Health, as new players may find it difficult to survive early on.
Tweak each character's abilities to make them even more unique. As one character can fire two weapons simultaniously, and another can fire the one gun twice on activate. It's easy to see which character looks surperior whether they are or not.
Personally if possible remove the +4 Max health mutation, and add in-game drops which individually increases your health in increments. However, I can see the community being O.K. with the current choice.

That's it, the game is pretty stable at its current state. Keep an eye on this game as anything can change, making the ride, that much more fun!
I also expect the Online Multiplayer to be out soon, I want to experience throwing grenades to the one who gave me this game.

I would recommend anyone with a happy trigger finger to hit that damn purchase button.
Actually, don't do that.
Buy 2 Copies and give one to your friend! If you don't have friends. Give it to someone who wants it, and form a new friendship. The possibilities are endless!
