Update #98 - Thronebutt - February 21st, 2016

It's been a while, but update 98 finally seems ready. While we've done lots of testing on this build over the last few weeks, do note that the changes to this build are 'deep' enough that we can't guarantee it's 100% stable. Over the next few weeks we'll work on update 99, which will fix any issues that come up as 98 rolls out.

Most of Update 98 is balancing and fixes to issues introduced in 97, but the biggest change is the re-introduction of the Thronebutt meta-leaderboards. Nuclear Throne now directly interfaces with the site, and that means you can keep track of your Daily and Weekly performance there.

Thanks for the patience, and let us know what you think!

    Features
  • Thronebutt.com integration!

    Balancing
  • Heavy Slugger Buff
  • Jungle flies now have a chance of dropping maggots
  • Lightning Crystals are now more aggressive
  • Ultra Bolt Damage Buff
  • Some minor Steroids changes (now starts with bullets, starting ammo increase)
  • Huge things can no longer be revived (bosses, etc.)

    Fixes
  • Fixed some retroactive achievements
  • Removed Daily/Weekly from DRM-Free builds
  • Coop fixes
  • IDPD Van Depth fixes
  • Several No Portal Bugs fixed
  • Less freeze frames on Ally death
  • Skeleton now loses mutations properly
  • Lightning can now escape certain levels
  • Mom attacks with toxic again
  • YV purgatory bug fixed
  • Lots of crashes fixed
  • Van infinite loop fixed

    Misc
  • Collision optimalisations
  • Lightning optimalisations
  • Melting scorchmarks depth issues resolved
  • Loadout guns no longer sound like chicken sword and vice versa

As a fun side-note, community member lietu has been working on Throne2Speech, which sort of narrates your Nuclear Throne run using the new Thronebutt. It's still in beta, so it might not be perfect still. We're looking forward to what people create with the new stream key and Thronebutt integrations!

“Strip away all the punkish ingenuity piled on Nuclear Throne and you're left with this: a skin-fidgeting, hair-tingling battle of textures. Hard meets sticky. Bang meets squelch.”

“It’s an anarchic thrash of a roguelike where everything goes boom or splat—or, more frequently, boom and splat.”

You play the game. You're dead. You try again. You're dead. You try again for the third time. You're dead. You try again for the four- wait a minute. Now they're dead!

Yes, Nuclear Throne is at its core with its retro gameplay of you playing as a mutant by wielding a variety of weapons, and killing enemies and bosses as you try to reach the Nuclear Throne. Don't expect the game to go easy on you as it just throws you in an area with various enemies and surprises for you to kill and encounter as you collect weapons, ammo and rads from them (also including chests and rad containers) as you avoid getting killed, which you will experience a lot, during the process. Only one question remains: can YOU reach the Nuclear Throne? Or will you suffer non-stop deaths that's always lurking around the corner?

A fun, retro game made by Vlambeer that created Super Crate Box.

A great competitive game! I like it a lot. It's been awhile since I've played one so I did a little bit of a research and find this game. It is like dark souls - maybe less harder with a 8-bit graphics and fun gameplay. I have no regrets purchasing this game so I very much recommended if you are into compettitive games.

when you win the main menu background goes from being a purple portal to a blue one
i got obsessed with this and it would haunt me whenever i left the game and the background wasn't a blue portal

got my first panic attack after failing to defeat the captain boss for the fifth time
now i instinctively cannot play this game anymore, my heart rate skyrockets whenever i think about reinstalling it

the background portal still became blue tho

1: Start your day off with a decent run

2: Your second run you die halfway to the first point you made it to

3: Get mad, rush through stages in an attempt to get back to the first point

TL;DR: FAST, DIFFICULT AND FUN AS HELL SHOOTER WITH A LOT OF UNLOCKS AND SECRETS. BUY IT IT'S AMAZING

Oh boy where do I start with this game?
Let me tell you, this game is HARDCORE. You know Dark Souls? You play Dark Souls to relax after playing Nuclear Throne, that's how hardcore it is.

You start out playing Nuclear Throne and you're like "yeah, whatever, some shooter or somethin', I guess this is a little fun". But then you die. Over and over again you die, and start getting ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off at how bad you are at this, and force yourself to get better. As you progress, you start noticing that this little harmless shooter was not as shallow as it first seemed. It it DEEP, it has SO MANY THINGS in it. Guns, enemies, maps, bosses, secret little things to do and unlock that make you go into a secret-seeking frenzy. You think you're done when, after countless hours, you beat the final boss? Psh, you haven't seen ANYTHING yet. This is the kind of game that you have to experience for yourself, so I'm not going to spoil anything. I only recommend that you try playing this with friends if you're not into searching for secrets on the internet, they might find something you overlooked and vice-versa. Now, for the Pros and Cons section of this review:

THE GOOD:
  • Fast, fun and addicting gameplay;
  • Huge variety of weapons;
  • Level-ups and upgrades that are actually meaningful and useful;
  • Plenty of characters with different and unique abilities to choose from;
  • Unique theme with characters that grow on you despite speaking their own language;
  • A bunch of sometimes extremely difficult to find secrets;
  • Unlocks that challenge you in innovative ways to improve your playstyle;
  • Runs go by quickly and allow for fast gameplays during breaks at work, school, or anything else;
  • A ton of other stuff and tiny amazing details that you notice as you play.

THE BAD:
  • Certain deaths feel very unfair and frustrating;
  • Sometimes, as with any game of the genre, RNG lets you down;
  • The difficulty in gameplay and in uncovering some secrets may push certain people away before they can truly enjoy the experience.

THE VERDICT:

This game is absolute must-play. If, after giving it a real and long try, you end up not liking it, so be it. Chances are, though, if you're a fan of roguelikes, shooters or just FUN GAMES, you'll most likely love this one. Its price may seem a little too high from someone who hasn't played it yet, as it seems like any other indie shooter, but the level of detail and content in this game way surpasses that price-point. Not to mention the countless hours you'll spend playing (and dying on) this game. Buy it, try it and, hopefully, love it.

I mean this out of the bottom of my heart when I say this game is amazing. It is a phenominally good game to play with HOURS of play value! To simply put it, the game is like if Binding of Isaac and Fallout had a baby. The game has ton of unlockables and achievements that really test how good you are at the game and it can be a real challenge to get some of them. If I had to say so, this game is definetly not for a casual gamer looking for a laid-back play-style, if you play this prepare for intense shaking, heavy breathing, and sweaty hands. Also alot of depression and potential crying from dying from rediculos ways (DEM CAR EXPLOSIONS). Anyway, if I had to rate this game on a scale from 1 to 10, I am going for a 9.5 out of 10. .5 being excluded because there are some bugs that can ruin an entire run. Examples include: 1: Sometimes entering an area called the Crown Vault after doing something specific will cause a rare bug in which tiles and enemies that don't appear in the area spawn. 2: Sometimes the game crashes randomly at the start of some boss fights. For me this is COMPLETELY random. And finally 3: Sometimes when walls are exploded the top of the wall still coveres the floor so you can't see ANYTHING! This has ended so many runs for me because of enemies running after me under the wall so I didn't have time to aim or run. Anyway these bugs are rare so I still say this game is a definet must-get if your a thrill-seeker who loves to have adrenline rushes when you play games. :3

The best game of this type I played. Even after a 100th playthrough I don't feel like it's getting repetitive.
