What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nuclear Throne was originally created during MOJAM 2013 as a tiny, two day prototype called 'Wasteland Kings'. We never stopped adding little things to the game, even as we moved on to other projects. We had livestreamed development during MOJAM, and decided to continue doing that while we worked on a full version of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game will be in Early Access until it is done, at which point it'll launch on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Until that point, we release weekly updates (each weekend) and livestream every Tuesday and Thursday frmo 1PM CET to 5PM CET on http://twitch.tv/Vlambeer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Nuclear Throne will feature seven full worlds of procedural action, four main bosses, tons of secrets, more than 75 weapons, 10 mutants, dozens of powerful mutations and local multiplayer.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully stable and playable, and has new additions made to it every weekend.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If you want to wait until the game is done, it'll be available for $11,99 after development is complete. We're not doing any sales or bundles until the game is out of Early Access - we want people that really care about the game to buy and play it now. If you're curious as to how a game like this evolves or grows, now is the time to jump in.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We livestream development every Tuesday and Thursday from 1PM CET to 5PM CET, are very active in our forums and upload a new build every single weekend.”

Update #70 - Bolt Variety - Weekend of April 24th

A bit of a smaller one again, as some of the team are in Germany to visit A MAZE festival, and some of the team were all over the world! We've still managed to cram in a brand new bolt weapon type, so let's see if it's any good! Other than that, we've probably eliminated Melting's "dead end" bug, changed crossbow hitboxes slightly to allow you to shoot nearby enemies, and fixed a few other things as well.

Sorry for being late with the update this week, I really needed a quick break after a ridiculous travel schedule this week (2 continents, 3 countries, 4 presentations at 4 events, in 7 days). We'll be back on our usual schedule again next week with releases. Thanks for your understanding!

JW said I should add "HAVE A FUN" to this one, so HAVE A FUN.

    Features
  • Seeker Pistol.
  • Seeker Shotgun.

    Balancing
  • Tiny change to the way Plasma Minigun fires.
  • Open Mind now gives you an extra chest in 7_3.

    Fixes
  • Fixed bolt hitmasks.
  • Fixed Melting's "dead end" Ultra bug.
  • Throne Butt now has a dash between the character name and description.

Revving back up again, and really excited about some of the progress we're making with the UI so far. We're also slowly getting more information together on the physical editions of the game.

This has been my go-to game for months now! There's an incredible amount of variety in the weapons and abilities that you can find, and they get crazier as you go on! Revolver. Sledgehammer. Laser rifle. Minigun. Energy sword. Auto grenade shotgun. Lightning cannon. Each character is also completely unique, and plays very differently. One revolves around spawning minions to assist you, while another can dual wield, an yet another can explode the corpses of defeated enemies! You can become absurdly powerful, but you're still always vulnerable, and it's PERFECT. If you have played some of the modern action-roguelikes that are so popular today (Binding of Isaac, Crypt of the Necrodancer), you have likely noticed that you become nearly unstoppable after a while. In Isaac, you get Brimstone, tammy's head, and holy mantle? You can't die. This is not the case with Nuclear Throne! You can launch nukes into crowds of enemies, you can spawn an entire army of allies to protect you, you can use telekinesis to push away projectiles, and yet the slightest misstep leads to a yeti hurling a car at you, putting your rampage to an explosive end. And that explosion is going to look good, sound good, and feel good, because the visual and audio design is extremely on point. You can really feel the power in a gun when you're shooting it. The only reason I can think of to pass up this game is if you're just not into the challenge of it. As I said, you can die in an instant at any moment. You'll generally have 8 HP tops, and a standard bullet does 3 damage. Many things deal more than that. You do not get invincibility frames upon being hit (I THINK. If you do, it's like 2 or 3 frames tops). If that sounds like a dealbreaker to you, I guess this isn't your kind of game. If that sounds exciting to you, get the game NOW! I honestly can't recommend it enough. Have fun!

Incredibly fun and unforgiving.

You start the game out with a revolver and some bullets and work through randomly generated levels trying to manage your health and ammo while collecting pieces of radiation from the corpses of your fallen enemies and canisters that are placed on the map. Collecting enough will eventualy allpw you to level up....but only once you beat the current level. Once you beat the level, youll be given several randomly generated "mutations" or perks to choose from that do various things like modfy your special ability, give you more health, increase your ammo cap, increase drop rates, allow you to pick up items from further away, or countless others. There are clear mutations that are better for certain characters and some that are just good choices overall.

This game shines in comparisn to other rougelike games in its ability for you to cater a run and have the objectives to be to try and get x or y weapon and get a, b, and c mutations. Unlike in games like th binng of issac where you will just get random weapons and there are too many for you to be able to realiably make a plan, there are enough to provide variety while not being so much that its overwhelming to understand and providing enough oppertunitie to switch weapons on levels. Its also really important to understand that while you can "plan" your runs to do something in particular, it is still hard to execute because you have to stay on your feet the entire time and one stray bullet, misfired rocket, or graze against the wrong enemy is enough to end even the most promsing of runs.

While nuclear thorne is still in early access, the game has more going for it than many games that are already published in the same price range. Unlike other games with different playable classes and characters, there is no clearly best character and every character has their own unique playstyle that can be played effectively. The game has constantly been recieving updates and Im looking forward to even more in the future!
